Yes, the original version of that FM oldie "White Bird" is included on this CD. Formed in 1967 by former symphony violinist David LaFlamme, this popular group plowed through all of the San Francisco Sound's clichés at once: organ, fiddle and drum solos; epigrammatic sayings about love, time, and dreams that are so cheesy they would make a Hallmark hack blush; the soft-part-that-heads-steadily-toward-the-crescendo part; incongruously pieced-together prog-rock songs that plod on for way too long; off-kilter male and female singing; and a near-total lack of soul. This 1969 recording, then, is a clear blueprint of what not to do in psychedelic rock--with the exception of "White Bird," which retains a sheen of innocence and melodic oomph despite its daft, repeated utterance that "she must fly!" This reissue has a bright, clear sound and excellent separation; it will more than please fans of the original LP. However, those looking for an equal to the best works of Moby Grape, Quicksilver, and the Dead are encouraged to seek elsewhere. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Innovation and Musicianship, It's A Beutiful Day.......2007-07-22

David LaFlamme was one of the first, if not THE first to use an electric violin in rock music. This is an outstanding example of the vast range that "rock" music encompasses and how musicians of that era, (the late '60's), were willing to push to envelope of the time in regard to what was "acceptable" for radio. Three minutes was pretty much the time limit of anything that could get airplay. Also, the use of a violin as anything but a "sweetener" was pretty much unheard of. While not every song on this album is a top forty smash, they all have some redeeming qualities and some, most notably "White Bird", "Hot Summer Day" and "Girl With No Eyes" are extremely good for both their musical quality, vocals and the ability of the band to create a genre that simply didn't exist before them. While "White Bird" may seem a bit tired to some ears in this day and age, it is most likely because of all the airplay it has received over the years, and there is a valid reason for that...it really is that good. For an excellent feel for the Woodstock era, this is a must have for anyone interested in good music.

5 out of 5 stars PATTI SANTOS was the original vocal!.......2007-07-14

PATTI SANTOS Santos was the original vocal on the original recording. Her voice was so unique and beautiful that no one since her untimely death will EVER be able to duplicate. For some reason, there is NO mention of Patti in any of these reviews OR on LaFlamme's website. I wonder why that is? PATTI SANTOS was what made It's A Beautiful Day what it was. Yes, the violin is very pretty, but I can always listen to Jean-Luc Ponty. I'm afraid that without PATTI SANTOS on vocals and percussion, IABD will never be the same. Just a good example of how it's never as good as the original. I do, however, think all of IABD's albums are excellent masterpieces. The LaFlamme solo albums are good too. Fortunately, we have the beauty of PATTI SANTOS' vocals on those albums. It's kinda like trying to recreate "Close To You" by the Carpenters with another singer other than Karen Carpenter--it can't be done. These were unique, beautifully gifted artists who were one of a kind and are still missed to this day.

3 out of 5 stars Two Great Cuts, One Nostalgic Cut, and a Lot of Garbage.......2007-07-13

Great cut: Hot Summer Day: unique, superb mix of instruments (violin, harmonica, keyboard, and electric guitar), nice vocals (the lyrics are kinda dumb, but that's part of the 60s), fantastic build up...everything that characterizes a great 60s song. The last few intensive notes end this song beautifully.

Great cut: Bombay Calling - a wonderful violin driven instrumental that makes you bounce in your seat.

Nostalgic Cut: White Bird (yup. I'm that old). Great to hear it, but it makes its point and then pounds you to death with it

OK Cut: Girl with No Eyes (what is this song trying to tell us?)

What's with the rest of this junk? It's either painfully harsh or just downright boring. Amazon reviewer Mike McGonigal hit the nail on the head. This album is everything that's right and wrong with the 60s music.

4 out of 5 stars Memories.......2007-03-19

I had one of the songs off this CD stuck in my head for weeks. I finally got my song fix and it was great!

5 out of 5 stars I don't know about "the San Fran sound", but I know IT'S A BEAUTIFUL SOUND..........2007-02-23

This album was recorded well before I was born so this review will not be based on subjective and biased memories...though I wish I could have experienced this band back in that era because a lot of great music was created back then. I am not familiar with the so-called "San Franscisco sound" but I do know of other bands in this era such as Jefferson Airplane, the Doors, King Crimson, and Procol Harum (these are bands I mention because I think elements of their sound can be heard in It's a Beautiful Day).

BEAUTIFUL!!! That word really does describe this album better than anything else in the english vocabulary. The cover of the album reminds me of the movie 'The Sound of Music' and the music is pure genius. Take a typical 4 peice 60's band (bass, guitar, drums, vocals) then add keyboards with psychedelic sound effects, a very talented violinist, a female vocalist, and a variety of other instruments...combine all this with gorgeous melodies, poetic lyrics, and progressive song compositions = BEAUTIFUL!!!

I won't take the time to dissect every song but I will make mention that "White Bird" really is as wonderful as all the other reviewers have made it out to be. Other highlights for me were the psychedelic and very catchy melodies of "Girl With No Eyes", the distorted guitars and upbeat tempo of "Wasted Union Blues", the guitar licks and harmonies of the instrumental song "Bombay Calling", and the diverse and crazy "Time Is" (almost 10 minutes in length and includes a great percussion solo). There is really no filler on this album and David Lafamme's voice is just as moving as his violin. As the lyrics of "Bulgaria" suggest: "Open up your mind!"

BEAUTIFUL!!!

RECOMMENDATION: As mentioned earlier in my review - fans of the Doors, King Crimson, Jefferson Airplane, or Procol Harum should dig this music. If you are already familar with It's A Beautiful Day then those aforementioned bands should be part of your music collection as well. Also highly recommended is the band Camel's 1975 instrumental masterpiece entitled 'The Snow Goose'. See my profile for more suggestions.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing lyrics and harmonies.......2007-05-31

Missy Higgins's debut cd is amazing and her live performances are even better. Her sound is clear and resonating with warm tones. I wish her second cd, "Steer" was available in the US, but you can listen to all of her tracts for free on [...]

1 out of 5 stars Horrible voice.......2007-04-27

Doesn't matter what kind of accent it is, that voice is just dreadful. She is like the female Bob Dylan. Can I put a negative star on this?

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Voice & Beautiful Songs.......2007-04-01

"The Sound of White" by Missy Higgins is a timeless classic. In today's world of disposable and meaningless pop/r&b, it's with relief that there are still some artists capable of writing real music, with real lyrics, about real life. Missy Higgins has a very beautiful and accessible voice. Her "ordinariness" is as much a part of her appeal as is her music. She is, as is captured in this album, just like everyone one of us - a person struggling with life and all its complexities. There are a number of great tracks on this album but clear standouts for me are "The Special Two" and "All For Believing". If you crave to listen to music that talks about real life, and by a singer who can genuinely sing, this album comes highly recommended. 5/5.

5 out of 5 stars She's going to be a HUGE star!.......2007-02-13

I heard Missy Higgins for the first time on a mix CD a friend gave me after she came back from Australia, and I fell in love with the song "Nightminds." It is a beautiful song - very raw and emotional and Missy's voice is truly haunting. Then I listened to a few of her other songs on Amazon and bought the CD thinking that it was going to be a good album, but I was sorely mistaken because this CD is PHENOMENAL!

The first time I listened to the entire CD I liked it and thought her voice was pretty in an unusual sort of way and that her lyrics were interesting. However the music just grew on me and within three or four times listening to the album I have discovered so much more than just a talented singer/songwriter. Ms. Higgins is a musical genius, capable of tapping into every sort of human emotion, with a voice and likabilty that will surely make her a huge star. One a selfish level, I wish I could keep this CD as my little secret, but its just too incredible not to tell everyone about.

I would recommend this CD to anyone with an interest in really great and original music. Also, she's won't just appeal to women - my husband loves the CD as well.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty piano.......2006-06-29

I bought this CD a few months ago, after seeing how many ARIAs it got, and how long it was in the top 10 (I am Australian, like many others reviewing this CD). I found it to be one of the best new albums around, and I love the piano parts. The only shame was that "The Cactus that Found the Beat" (from the Scar EP) wasn't on it.

This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars spiritual americana.......2007-01-06

I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!

5 out of 5 stars Rich Heritage.......2006-10-11

Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Superb .......2006-08-07

This collection of American Christian music is not only an enthralling musical experience but a spiritually uplifting one as well. Anonymous Four have transferred their luminous vocal quality to a new space with perfect success.

5 out of 5 stars Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07

My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.

These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars Mana from Heaven.......2006-05-08

I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

5 out of 5 stars At The Movies by Andre Rieu.......2007-05-20

Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music. Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".

4 out of 5 stars very beautiful.......2007-01-09

This cd is very beautiful. It captures the songs wonderfully. The orchestra does a fine job.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing Music.......2006-11-03

Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.

4 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu - Music for the masses.......2006-08-10

Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

Album Description

Dakini Lounge marks Indo-Jazz innovator Prem Joshua's first encounter with DJ science. Here, an eclectic collection of cutting edge mixologists including Karsh Kale, Sean Dinsmore (The Dum Dum Project), Joi and Dharma Dogz (of Waterbone) shed new light on Joshua's signature sound, translating his East-West alchemies into stunning dub, chill and dance floor masterworks.

Prem Joshua has come a long way from the 18-year-old German rocker, mind blown by a Ravi Shankar performance, answering a mysterious call from a faraway place. While spending the better part of 20 years in India (where he has sold well over 50,000 records), Joshua has developed a unique musical style employing sitar, Indian flutes, saxophone, electronica and tarana-style singing that artfully—and skillfully—bridges the gap between traditional Eastern sounds and Western jazz forms, prompting the Times of India to dub him "the new guru of East-West fusion music."

Dakini Lounge marks the next logical progression in Prem Joshua's storied career. Placing the master musician's songs in the able hands of these modern day studio mavens presents new interpretations and directions for the many listeners already in love with Prem Joshua's music while introducing him to an ever wider audience.

3 out of 5 stars Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

5 out of 5 stars Its all Christmas.......2007-01-09

It reminded me of Christmas as a child. I played this all throughout the holidays.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

4 out of 5 stars cd reviews.......2006-01-15

this cd was very good, much recommended

2 out of 5 stars Poor Quality.......2005-12-05

The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

5 out of 5 stars New singer, same results, great album!.......2007-05-24

Anthrax, along with Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth were the 4 bands that converted me into a metalhead in the 80's. They always seemed to produce consistent headbanging material. However, I was a little concerned that this consistency would be broken when I heard that John Bush would be replacing Joey Belladonna at lead vocals for the 1993 release "The Sound of White Noise." Once I heard the album, I was concerned no more.

Believe it or not, I instantly preferred Bush's vocals. Every album that Joey appeared on was solid and consistent and followed the basic headbanging formula. Not that this is a bad thing, but Anthrax never really seemed to stray too far from the norm. John Bush brought a level of maturity with him and "The Sound of White Noise" became their most mature album up to that point.

With this album, Anthrax dared to challenge themselves with more complex song arrangements, much deeper melodies, and more thought provoking lyrics. It's almost as though Joey was holding them back from expanding out of the thrash box that they were in. Bush's vocals are tremendous and allow for more powerful choruses and hook lines. Each song is as memorable as the next with plenty of headbanging material to go around. However, songs like Packaged Rebellion and Black Lodge are unlike any previous Anthrax songs, but are just as great. Other high points are Potter's Field, Hy Pro Glo, Invisible, and Room For One More.

Do I think this is the best Anthrax album? It depends on my mood. If I'm looking for straight up headbanging with killer riffs and pounding drums, I prefer Among The Living. If I'm looking for the entire package, The Sound of White Noise satisfies all of my metal cravings.

As with any review, these are my opinions and not everybody will agree with them which is what makes these reviews so much fun. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The best of the Bush era.......2007-04-29

Anthrax fans can be lumpers or splitters; splitters consider there to be four anthraxes, lumpers only one. I tend to think of two Anthraxes; a Belldonna Anthrax and a Bush Anthrax. "Sound" is the first album of the Bush reign. Bush's voice is much deeper than Belladonna's, one of the reasons that I think of two separate Anthraxes. The writing of "SOWN" accommodates that difference well.

Many believe that John Bush's voice forced the band to take a more mature approach to their music, eliminating comic books, Stephen King and Mythology as their muses. However, a relisten to P"ersistence of Time" will show anyone that the boys were already headed in that direction. "POT" and "SOWN" actually transition well together because of this. In fact, C11H17N2Na02S (the chemical formula for sodium penthanol, a.k.a. truth serum) sounds like a leftover from "Persistence", and one could easily imagine Joey singing the song. Both albums veer away from the high-pitched speed riffs of the earlier albums and emphasize the rhythm section (Charlie and Frankie).

While I will not speculate as to whether I like Belladonna or Bush better, I will say that this is the best effort of the Bush Anthrax. Most metal fans will have heard the "hits": "Black Lodge", "Only" and "Room for One More", but "Hy Pro Glo", "Potter's Field" and "1000 Points of Hate" are just as strong. Music fans wishing to explore Anthrax should start with "Among the Living", still the best `thrax album, and "Sound" and compare the two lead singers themselves. Luckily, the greatest back-up singer in history, Scott Ian, is a constant on both!

3 out of 5 stars the music itself was good.......2007-04-15

i really licked the music on this album, but i wish they would go back and remaster it though. the sound quality on this album sucked big time. there is alot of distortion that can't be fine tuned out on any stereo system.

    5 out of 5 stars Anthrax Reborn.......2007-04-14

Originally released in 1993, Sound of White Noise was the debut album of "the Bush era". I was always aware of Anthrax growing up, but aside from their goofball "I'm the Man" single, the band never really made much of an impact on me until they replaced vocalist Joey Belladonna with Armored Saint's John Bush. Bush's energetic and intense yet still melodic vocal style just seemed like such a better fit for Anthrax's brand of thrash, and I still view that lineup's debut - 1993's Sound of White Noise - as the best Anthrax album ever.

Sound of White Noise is a tour de force performance by a band that obviously felt they had something to prove after the loss of long-time vocalist Joey Belladonna. John Bush brought an incredible energy to the band, resulting in one of the most high octane metal albums I've ever heard. When I first saw the video for "Only" my jaw hit the floor and I remember thinking "THIS is Anthrax?" I bought the album the next day and was amazed at how track by track it just seemed to get better and better, from the melodic "Only" to the ultra-aggressive "Packaged Rebellion", "Burst" and "Hy Pro Glo" to the downright haunting "Black Lodge". There are no weak tracks on this album at all. It's rare that an album has this kind of heart attack impact on me, but Sound of White Noise definitely made an immediate impression. To me, this will always be the definitive Anthrax album.

3 out of 5 stars John Bushs' debut slab with the 'thrax.......2007-04-04

The excitement of a new singer copules with the fact that it was released at the height of the grunge revolution put this album on the radar screens of many metal heads. Just what would it sound like?

    IMHO;

This is an Anthrax stripped of much of their likeability. From the packaging to the generic feel to the albums tunes this is an Anthrax taking the opportunity to divest themselves of the hysterical delivery style of the Belladonna years. And John Bush rocks. What a voice, what a down to earth way of vocalising these metal musings.

That's not to say I like the end result. And I don't. Which I realise puts me out of synch with accepted wisdom on this album which was seen as a rebirth. Well it was, but not into something to my taste. John Bush yes. But the overheavy tunes, well no thanks. Right from the opener of Potters Field this album just doesn't gel with me. To my ears it feels like the band were trying to come to terms with the new vocal style they were writing for.

But don't take my word for it, read some other reviews before blowing your cash. After all I didn't hear this until after hearing the second Bush era release Stomp 442. Which was awesome. So going in reverse order to this perhaps explains my being underwhelmed by this critically adored, hard and heavy offering.

    Product Description

On their first full album release, DESERT DWELLERS meld elements of downtempo and psy-chill with sinewy basslines, otherworldly guitar and an exotic mix of organic instruments into an Indo-ambient mystical fusion. This recording, along with the forthcoming DOWNTEMPLE DUB: FLAMES, was originally conceived as the soundtrack to the DVD Series DUNCAN WONG YOGIC ARTS. That project allowed DESERT DWELLERS to push the bounds of Yoga music into a new realm of musical fusion called “Yoga Dub”: electronic devotional music blending the boundaries of rhythmic ambience while incorporating such traditional instruments as subahar, tabla, udu, erhu, cello and voice. The emphasis is always on the space between the music, allowing for a non-intrusive soundscape to support rather than distract from the listener’s activity. Produced by CRAIG KOHLAND, founder of the SHAMAN'S DREAM ENSEMBLE, DOWNTEMPLE DUB: WAVES pulses with lush rhythms and serene harmonies, guiding a sonic odyssey into the soul of the global heartbeat.

5 out of 5 stars Indianesque (Sweetly Spiritually Harmonizing) and Kicking-at-times Electronica Plus Other.......2007-04-12

Taste, younger adult males making sacred peace, very hit at the right times interesting stalls, etc electronica for yoga specifically- originally, but totally appropriate to spiritual living, parties, etc. It is gracefully almost alt rock and roll-like at stop to restart moments, with nontraditonal instrumentation. I believe they may have played at Burning Man celebrations. Very likable, although I was dissatisfied until the second play. Then I started savoring it for some reason. It is a regular favorite after a couple weeks. There are no skip-overs. (Not as impressed yet with Flames which is the trio's remix of the formerly duo's earlier work.) I would love to see this progress to a more personal and other cultures-inclusive wholeness; we need Native America's (incl South's) greater depths shared I believe also with such modern beauty and good-natured intelligence, and not oversampled and simplified traditionally either. This one's focus is something I enjoy and the Indian sounds, names, and art need to get better personally and differently in progress also- I have heard these sounds before but they've done it in a great new and exciting way on the "frontier". There is a all-drumming song that is spectacular and contributes to the non-banal-ing of the complexity tremendously. I have mixed emotions about it being a yoga cd-- it reminds me of exercise videos and following general and perhaps overgeneralizations I don't want to be a part of-- there is a sort of common excellence I think due to that that I don't appreciate, but I have enjoyed it especially.

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

    4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

    1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

    5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.
