Like compatriots Franz Ferdinand , the Futureheads play a dazzling power pop that’s impossible to sit still to. This British quartet’s rambunctious long-playing debut showcases choice art school tastes ca. 2004: Their sound’s strongly influenced by the herky-jerky pop of early XTC, the album was produced by the Gang of Four’s Andy Gill, one of the songs is called "Man Ray" (dada and surrealism are perennial hits with undergrads), while one of the best tunes is a well-placed cover of Kate Bush’s "Hounds of Love." These retro ingredients would result in trendy mush in most hands, but the ’heads’ songs are strange, melodic and almost as original as the artists they brazenly borrow from. With intricately woven vocal harmonies that almost recall jubilee-era gospel (really), excellently sparse production, and a sproing-oing guitar sound that’s to die for, the Futureheads’ snappy songs are not likely to go stale as quickly as your electroclash favorites did. --Mike McGonigal

4 out of 5 stars Angular, Edgy Retro-Pop.......2006-07-31

As a big fan of both the Jam's early work and XTC's entire catalog, I listened to the opening notes of THE FUTUREHEADS and knew exactly where they were coming from. Along with the Dead 60s, these guys are rechanneling quality New Wave pop from the early 1980s like nobody's business.

But I wouldn't insult the band by calling them derivative; after all, you can't riff on XTC without having the ability to write a catchy tune. On songs like "Decent Days and Nights" and "Meantime:," the Futureheads show they have a knack for songwriting. There are missteps; "Danger of the Water" and "The City Is Here for You..." are too ambitious by half, but again, you can't fault them for aiming high. So I'll admit that I'm rating this CD a little bit higher based on the band's potential and moxie.

SIDELIGHT: In the true spirit of New Wave pop music, most of the songs here clock in at just over two minutes. The band's magnum opus, "He Knows," is 3:14.

4 out of 5 stars Joyful and energetic, this is POP!.......2006-03-21

I wouldn't call the Futureheads punk, rather like one of their biggest influences XTC (that's early XTC, pre pre Skylarking) once said "this is POP." And damn good energetic and melodic pop it is too, like a jolt of caffeine to yer back brain accompanied by a boot in the pants. Sure you could call The Futureheads '80s revivalist trendmongering, but then you'd miss out on all the fun.

4 out of 5 stars Good post-punk, but far from classic - genre fans will be satisfied.......2006-01-14

The Futureheads are a good and unique-sounding British post-punk group, but I would definitely not put this album up with the likes of Gang Of Four's "Entertainment!" or even the Talking Heads' "Talking Heads: 77". It lacks the charm and originality of those two albums, but that's not to say that this is bad. The first mistake the band makes is that the singers aren't that appealing - I can definitely imagine a good amount of people not liking them. They just lack the personality or charisma that, say, David Byrne had. However, they aren't "terrible" and are certainly standable, which is good (they're similar to Kaiser Chiefs' singer). There are no bad songs here, but there are some ok and good ones - there's nothing great and memorable here like, say, Bloc Party's "Banquet" or "Helicopter" ("Aims" comes close). Lyrically the album is easy to make out most of the time and is relatively interesting albeit very forgettable. You'll pay attention to the lyrics, yes, but you won't remember any of them. Musically it sounds like any other post-punk band out there today, so nothing really new here. Basically, post-punk fans will enjoy this album, but not "greatly". I'm pretty sure that non-genre fans won't like it that much. Slightly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars The Futureheads induce the scratching heads.......2006-01-01

I have no idea how I came across this self-titled album from the Futureheads. At any rate, people seem to have different inferences on the band's vibe; to me, they sound like a modern-day version of the Cure. The way they put the songs together isn't bad per se, but the way they put the ALBUM together is what's odd.

This is one of those albums that sounds like one long single rather than several separate songs; it's very difficult to distinguish one song from the next (except for "Stupid and Shallow", which is just that). And the fact that they breeze through fifteen tracks in 35 minutes shows a lack of substance. This album from the Futureheads might suit indie rock purists well, but I personally think they need a little more variety in their material.

5 out of 5 stars Impossible to resist (4.5 Stars).......2005-10-12

Even from the very start of the poppy vocal introduction, this album is insanely catchy. After the first spin, there's no going back. The new new-wave thrash and vocals immediately following the dreamy introduction attack with such a force that it would simply be impossible to not get revved up. From opener "Le Garage" the album goes to "Robot," the quirkiest and catchiest of love songs. Then "A to B," a song about absolutely nothing at all. Is that a problem? No because it is one of the best examples of a shameless and wonderful repetition of a hook. Every song on this 15 track disc is positively full of a wonderful punk energy that was in dire need of reviving. And to top it off, the album closes even stronger than it opens, something that needs to happen a lot more in the world of pop music. The stunning "Hounds of Love" and "Man Ray" are the perfect way to close up such an energetic release. One of the most fun CDs to come out of anywhere in a while, The Futureheads is a must buy if you want to be moved by music again.

Best known for a spastic, heavily accented post-punk cover of Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love" that went Top 10 in the UK, this British quartet attempts to kick away from its '80s-inspired comrades--such as Franz Ferdinand and Kaiser Chiefs--on their second album. Not that there's any shortage of spiky riffs, jerky rhythms, and off-kilter harmonies on News and Tributes. But get past the more pedestrian fare like "Yes/No" and "Return of the Berserker," and the full scope of the Futureheads' ambition reveals itself, particularly in the poppiest track, "Skip To The End." Meanwhile, "Thursday" is laced with a distinct doo-wop feel, "Favours for Favours" shows the band's softer side, and the jagged "Burnt" proves that the group can approach greatness on a song of its very own.--Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars great show in san diego.......2006-09-25

I have seen Futureheads play a few times. I was really into them at first, and then got into other bands like Art Brut and Maximo Park. Now they have a second record and a new tour. I saw a show that was filmed for a TV show. The first album was produced by Andy Gill, so all the Gang of Four comparisons came with them I always liked the vocals. The new album seems solid. Better songs. No songs like "Hound Of Love" but good songs nonetheless. Some favorites are "Skip To The End" and "Back To The Sea." This record seems more like a great mod record. There is even a song called "Face" which recalls Quadrophenia. The Futureheads are a pretty talented bunch. I read a new interview with one of the guy from Futureheads, and Colin Newman, from Wire. It made me more interested in the band. The Futureheads are worthy of all our attention.

4 out of 5 stars Sophomore Surprise.......2006-08-24

Lazy critics lumped The Futureheads in with the whole neo-new wave/angular movement without much thought. However, once you scrape away the glossy sheen it becomes apparent that The Futureheads offer much more: a cappella harmonies, British invasion melodies, and post-hardcore guitars were often found within a single song. Each ingredient was added with some thought to the other, and none were overpowering. With their myriad of influences The Futureheads were poised for a colorful and diverse new album to eclipse their debut.

Did they succeed? Well, yes and no. This is a Futureheads album so the good far outweighs the bad, and while News and Tributes certainly expands The Futureheads' sound, it fails to best their debut. Of course, nothing short of the second coming could have satisfactorily followed up the best album of 2004.

News and Tributes lacks the razor sharp edge The Futureheads used to carve out the taunt songs on their debut. At times this works to their advantage on the Brill Building-ish "Thursday" and some of the poppier numbers ("Skip to the End," "Fallout," and "Worry About it Later"), but when things get too slow the songs don't hold together as well. "Burnt," for example, seems obligatorily heartfelt. Tellingly, two of my favorite songs - "Yes/No" and "Area" - could have been b-sides from their eponymous album.

However, the aforementioned "Thursday" shows that the band isn't afraid of letting a single style dominate, and the fact that this song exists on the same album that houses "Return of the Berserker" - faster than anything seen on their debut - proves that The Futureheads have the kind of range other bands couldn't cohesively keep together. What does keep this album together is the simple fact that these guys are great songwriters with no shortage of ideas.

Now that The Futureheads have shown their range you can be certain this album will be in my rotation until their third one marries diversity with consistency. When that happens I'll be well prepared for the sky to crack open and The Futureheads to lead us to the promised land.

1 out of 5 stars apparently overrated.......2006-08-20

This band is too all-over-the-place with their melodies, they go off on tangents that don't make sense. They're similar to Hot Hot Heat but infinitely inferior. Don't waste your money on this, it only has about three decent tracks near the end.

2 out of 5 stars Dear hipster: why read this review -- you're going to buy it anyway.......2006-08-15

When I saw the Futureheads at Chicago's Empty Bottle in 2004, it was a revelation of jumproping vocal harmonies, savage guitar abuse and anthemic absurdity. The band's self-titled debut album was just as exciting. The Futureheads have barely stopped touring since, and it shows. All of their technical craft remains evident on News & Tributes, but there are few if any memorable moments. The songwriting just isn't there. And believe me: the band knows it. At this year's Pitchfork festival, they played perhaps three songs from N&T, choosing to lean on the older, tighter, hookier material. Want a great new rock album? Go Buy the Tokyo Police Club EP.

5 out of 5 stars Best Release of 2006.......2006-07-20

If The Futureheads' debut was akin (and it was) to The Jam's "The Modern World", then this is their "Setting Sons". This is a mature yet exhilarating work for such a young band and by far the year's best, most exciting rock release.

The new single "Decent Days & Nights" is The Futureheads at the peak of their powers; a choppy, Clash-y classic whose brazenly hooky guitars and chant-like vocals belie the clever stuff going on just below the surface. The tight mesh of syllables words and occasional animal yelps, sure is an enthralling place to get lost in. Especially, as in this instance, when the words themselves seem precisely to be about losing your bearings in this world. "Decent Days & Nights" sports a driving riff powerful enough to loosen the stiffest of rock-necks, along with an irresistible sense of building euphoria. Their greatest strength lies in their utilization of voice as a distinct melodic instrument in a loud, often strident context.

          4 out of 5 stars I have no mind.......2005-05-12

In the music scene today, there may be no band that sounds like it's having more fun than the Futureheads. Their bouncy dancepunk tunes are catchy, gritty-edged, danceable -- and above all, the guys sound like they're having a absolutely glorious time.

A pal of mine went to a Futureheads concert and confided that the crowd didn't move at all. That's hard to imagine -- after a mild buildup of vocal harmonies and guitar riffs, the catchiness kicks in with the rapid-fire percussion. "And I won't say what if it's true/Le garage (le garage-RAGE!)" the guys shout in the opener.

Things don't die down after that, from the Devo-esque "Robot" to the heavy-guitar, dadaesque "Man Ray." Not that everything is all the same -- the Futureheads are one of the few rock bands who don't rely on the same riffs and beats to achieve catchiness. They manage different kinds of catchiness -- herky-jerky, relentless, fragmented and poppy.

The only exception is "Danger of the Water," a song that is almost a capella, with Barry Hynde solemnly singing, as his bandmates chant "do do, do do" in the background. Okay, there's a tiny keyboard melody, but it's almost indiscernable -- and it's surprisingly entrancing when the song builds up to a tense climax ("Danger... water/Danger... water!"), followed by a yell from Hynde. Only imagine what happens next.

Despite comparisons to Franz Ferdinand, the Futureheads smack more of Devo-and-XTX-meets-the-Ramones. The jangly guitars, solid drums and bass are all wonderfully assured, but the vocal harmonies are the really good stuff. Hynde does most of the singing, but the other guys weave in and out without a single sonic burp.

Sure, it's not perfect. But the energy and fun of the Futureheads' debut can't be denied. A solid, fun, catchy dancepunk album.

Driving by Braille is a very good setup perfect vocals and less hardcore music, sticking to more emo, or "post-hardcore" as they like to be called. My favorite, "Blessed are the Dreamers," caused my heart to melt as Elliot and David harmonized their vocals and guitars so well together. The closest thing they sound like is Hum, with a slow lead-in and a beautiful explosion of sound. CONTENTS: 1) Blessed Are The Dreamers 2) Jaded 3) 4 Is Better Than 6 or 8 4) Houdini 5) Disclose 6) Evanessence 7) Made of Plastic
