Cyndi Lauper may have been mocked as a ditz when she emerged in 1983, but her songs have proven to be a lot more enduring than those by more critically respected artists of the 1980s. "Time After Time," for instance, has been covered by everybody from Miles Davis to Faith Hill to Uncle Kracker. That stylistic range can also be found on The Body Acoustic, on which Lauper--her voice now endearingly raspy--revisits her best-known songs with the help of an impressive gallery of guest stars. Sarah McLachlan comes in for "Time After Time," while the likes of Adam Lazzara (from emo band Taking Back Sunday), Shaggy, and Ani DiFranco also pay their respects. Okay, so we knew Lauper was a good songwriter, but what's been emerging lately is her talent as an interpreter. Here she does to her own material what she did to standards on 2003's At Last. Among the standouts are the stark "She Bop" and the catch-in-the-throat "True Colors" (both sans guests), and the superbly emotional "I'll Be Your River" (with Vivian Green). But lest you think Lauper had gone all serious on us, the album concludes with the bouncy "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"; Japanese duo Puffy Ami Yumi (a direct visual descendent of Lauper's early days) sings the chorus while Lauper herself lets loose on a new ska arrangement. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Emotional Ride.......2007-07-23

Cyndi Lauper pens most of her own tunes and she takes some of her best and rearranges them in somewhat pared down versions. Her 'less is more' approach works, mostly because it brings Lauper's great voice out to the forefront where it shines incredibly. A slower tempo on "Money Changes Everything" with Adam Lazzara, gives an entirely new feeling to the song. Its slightly more serious and less pop. Her 'duet' with Sarah McLachlan on "Time After Time" is emotionally satisfying with perfect pacing. "Sisters Of Avalon" is an emotional 'anthem-like' ride that almost seems like a fight for feminism. Lauper's timeless "True Colors" brings a lump to your throat with her earnest angst and honesty. And just when you're all emotionally spent, "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" springs upon you like a fuel injected slumber party. Its all good and the DUALDISC sound is fantastic and crisply clear. The videos are not spectacular, but they also don't detract from the songs - they only add to them.

5 out of 5 stars CYNSDI LAUPER "THE BODY ELECTRIC".......2007-07-02

THIS CAME AS A SURPRISE - IT IS GREAT BY ITSELF, BUT IT IS A 'DUALDISC' WHICH MEANS THE REVERSE SIDE IS LIKE A DVD!

4 out of 5 stars Cyndi Lauper At Her Best Vocally .......2007-04-29

This is Cyndi's 9th studio recording. The songs on this album are all updated classics from Cyndi's own repertoire, including: "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", "Time After Time" and "Money Changes Everything". The only songs on here that are new include: "Above The Clouds" which has a "Sisters Of Avalon" feel and "I'll Be Your River" which is totally acoustic. The album also contains many artists that sing with Cyndi like Adam Lazzara, Shaggy, Sarah Maclachlan, Jeff Beck, Vivian Green, Ani DiFanco and even Puffy Ami Yumi. The Dualdisc edition which I have, has on the other side of the cd, four new music videos made especially for this album, kinda sorta a behind the scenes of the making of the album. Also by the title of this album you know that it has a acoustic sound to it, which usually contains acoustic guitar, banjo, violin, bouzouki, mandolin, piano, cello, and of course voice. Overall I gave this album a 4 out of 5, because it's not Cyndi's most original of her career and is a little boring. What really saves this album from being a total bore is Cyndi who is at her vocal best, their at their most powerful and most strongest. The highlights are this album are "Money Changes Everything", "All Through The Night" and "Sisters Of Avalon".

4 out of 5 stars Some Very Beautiful Covers of Old Favorites!.......2007-04-23

I have been a fan of Cyndi's ever since I was a kid by overhearing a song or two on the radio by her. Her voice, her entire style was unique and powerful. When I heard she was seen as the poor man's Madonna as a I got older I found it an outrage. When it comes to popularity I guess Madonna did win, but to me Cyndi always was the better out of the two. I think Cyndi stands out more and also just says a lot more in her music than Madonna ever did. I think they're both great, but Cyndi wins and always has if I have to compare.

Anyway, I saw this in the library one day and decided before thinking of buying this I better listen to see how it would sound. I mean I wondered how all these guests singers would really click with Cyndi's songs. I am happy to say I am overall pleased with this album. Money Changes Everything really sounds beautiful, and I must say She Bop sounds excellent on this album- who knew how nice it would sound suddenly slowed down? All Through the Night with Shaggy (the same guy who made the hit Angel so long ago) actually works rather well and True Colors sounds even more beautiful than it originally did.

This whole album is beautiful, but there are a few parts on the album that fade with the bigger part of it. Time After Time unfortunately I think is better on the original- Sarah Mclachlan just doesn't work well with Cyndi as much as I thought she would. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is kind of silly on this album- it does not match up with the original at all. I'll Be Your River and Fearless kind of drag as well. So there are some minor flaws yet I do really enjoy this album especially when it comes to her covering her very early hits. Above the Clouds I had never had the chance to really hear before either and it sounds just gorgeous I love it.

So I say if you're a fan of Cyndi then definitely try it out. The only thing I don't like about this album is that it doesn't have Sally's Pigeons. I would have really liked to hear her cover that song now but I guess there is always one song you love but doesn't make it on these sorts of albums. Nonetheless I highly recommend- Cyndi still sounds great.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Body.......2007-02-25

I am a huge Cyndi Lauper fan so I was ready to love this cd no matter what lol.
Fistly I decided to watch the dvd section.
I cant believe how amazing Cyndi is to this day and how she and her music have lived and tested the test of time and WON.
Cyndi still has that zanyness and eccentricity about her and she shows that in her videos and still manages to comes across with style and grace.
The dvd section includes 4 videos and behind-the-scences which show Cyndi in great fashion. Love her and loved it.
Secondly the music, how do I explain what I heard?
I really didnt know what to expect.
There are names i knew (Sarah and Jeff) and names I didnt know (Adam, Ani and Vivian) and names I would never expect to see on a Cyndi album let alone a duet (Shaggy).
But u know what? it worked.
I found myself hooked and thats what it does to u - it captures u.
There are different versions of some of her classics and playfullness of others.
And the duets are just fantastic.
A great body of work.

5 out of 5 stars Loving it!.......2006-03-19

As a child of the 80's, I am loving her now more then ever. This is a great album. I am not going to write a book, but just simply say that I highly recomend this to anyone who remotely liked her in the 80's, she has only gotten better with age. Love It!!!

5 out of 5 stars Covers, New Stuff, it's all here!.......2006-02-07

Cyndi Lauper is an amazing triple threat peformer. She's got a power-house voice and range that I would call the white equal to Patti Labelle, who yes is friends with Lauper. She has written and performed some of the most endearing songs of the twenthieth century - and she has won two Emmy awards for her acting ability.

On this disc, we find Ms. Lauper revisiting her favorite songs from her vast catalog as well as sharing new material. Her ability as an interpreter is amazing. As a fan, I never thought I would like new versions of her older stuff - but this is really incredible. She was in complete control and you could even say this is how they are supposed to sound. Every track is genius.

Her voice and writing abilities are still in top notch shape. I know for a fact that most fans, myself included want a brand new album with all new material. However, it was wise of Cyndi to do this album first. To go from At Last back to regular Cyndi would be a huge jump. This album bridges the gap and reintroduces her catalog to people who would have otherwise forgotten. Smart Move.

Her next album, which I'm sure will be all new material should be a smash. Buy this album - you won't regret it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Reworkings.....Now Bring On The New Original Material!.......2006-01-24

With her latest release, the stripped-down THE BODY ACOUSTIC, Cyndi Lauper continues to reinvent herself and relaunch her stalled career. Starting with 2003's AT LAST, both Lauper and her label have been trying to make people forget that she was the Girl Who Just Wanted To Have Fun, and instead recast her as a serious singer/songwriter. THE BODY ACOUSTIC does a good job in advancing this goal....stripped down to an acoustic setting, Lauper's lyrics are at the forefront like never before, while her voice just shines. A prime example is the opening cut, the rollicking "Money Changes Everything." One of the key tracks off of Lauper's SHE'S SO UNUSUAL debut, the song's edgy new-wave groove has been replaced with a stomping alt-country one. Amid handclaps and harmonica, this song about true friends and fame (and maybe, just maybe, record company politics) takes on a totally different vibe twenty-two years down the road; you can just hear the experience and hard-won knowledge in Lauper's voice as she sings the lines "They shake your hand and they smile/And they buy you a drink/They say we'll be your friends/We'll stick with you until the end/Ah but everybody's only/Looking out for themselves." Still a true winner! "All Through The Night" has a quiet elegance to it, and could have done very nicely on it's own without Shaggy's rasta rap, which seems calculated and tacked on at the last minute for the guest star x-factor. "Time After Time" is probably one of the most beautiful ballads of the last 45 years, and it's hard to imagine Lauper improving upon the original, but she does just that. Presented here as a duet with Sarah McLachlan, the track is even more delicate and lovely than the first time around. Once again, it seems as if Lauper (and McLachlan for that matter!) is able to draw from years of experience now, and infuses the cut with all that knowledge, pain and insight. I don't use the word "masterpiece" very often, but this is one time when it truly fits! "She Bop" is one of the tracks that most benefits from THE BODY ACOUSTIC's starker arrangements. Devoid of the frantic pace and synth-heavy tempo of the original, this ode to that greatest of taboos (for those of you who've been in a coma the last 23 years.....that would be self-pleasuring!!) takes on a more intimate, almost pleading, vibe, reaching it's zenith with a line that pretty much got buried in the original version's mix ("I bop...you bop...a...they bop/Be bop...be bop...a...lu...she bop/I hope He will understand"). The whistling is also a nice touch. VERY cool! From here we segue into the disc's two new tracks, the sublime "Above The Clouds" and the emotional "I'll Be Your River." "Above The Clouds" (written for Lauper's young son) has a muted quality to it, which is actually a good thing...it allows both Lauper's heartfelt vocal and Jeff Beck's tasteful guitar to absolutely sparkle. "I'll Be Your River", a soul-tinged torch ballad for Lauper's husband, is a mix of fear, heat, yearning, support, devotion and trepidation....in other words, it covers all the bases of love and commitment, much like a real relationship. Lauper has rarely sounded so soulful and earthy, and the lyrics are both touching and painful ("Here stands a fortress built with great walls of silence/Ready to crumble at the slightest word/Finding the right one is becoming a science/I'd like to scream but I ain't gonna be heard"). Yet, in the end, Lauper lets us know that, even with all the pain and work and uncertainty, it just might be worth it after all ("What if all these fears/That we both buy into/Melt away and disappear"). Lovely! The thing that becomes most apparent upon hearing these two tracks is that it's time for Lauper to get in the studio and record a full album of new original material: between these two tracks and a number of the lost SHINE cuts, she's writing some of the best songs of her career. I've always felt that "Sisters Of Avalon" never got it's just dues, in large part due to record company politics (Lauper's label had pretty much written her off by the time the album of the same name came out in 1997). There's a pulsating, driving energy to the song that's still evident in this more unadorned version, and Lauper's vocals soar, particularly on the boarderline rapped bridge ("They brought her in in a new white dress/But the stain left an ache on her mother's breast/Now all that's left are the ghostly steps from a distant corridor"). Anchored by a throbbing baseline and Ani DiFranco's and Vivian Green's sterling harmony vocals, this is still an undiscovered gem! The same can't be said for "Shine"....as a relatively new cut - the title cut of Lauper's non-US released 2001 CD - the singer makes the mistake of doing an almost note for note version of the original track. It would have been much cooler to see her do it as, say, an almost spoken word ballad, just to shake things up. "True Colors" is both sweet and raw (as well as a tad bit pitchy!), while "Water's Edge" is nakedly haunting. The disc could have easily ended on a strong note with "Fearless", all folksy and bare-boned. Instead, we get the only real bomb on TBA, a frantic, silly version of "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", featuring Japanese super-stars (?) Puffi AmiYumi. This signature song of Lauper's has been remixed and rerecorded so many times that this would have been the perfect time to try something new, say, a hushed, bare bones acoustic arrangement. Too bad. But, overall, I've got to say THE BODY ACOUSTIC is a very nice reworking of some classic Cyndi Lauper material. However, I also have to reiterate...it's time for Lauper to get back in the studio and record an album of new original material (As with all my reviews, I'm giving the disc an extra half a star for including the lyrics, something extra rare on best-of's and re-recording packages).

5 out of 5 stars Cyndi is super........2006-01-12

Cyndi's super, and this album is incredible, I love what she did to her most famous hits,
and of course the new songs are sensational! I can't wait to see Cyndi on Broadway in March, it's gonna be great!!!

1 out of 5 stars Too much cuteness........2006-01-12

This album is just dissapointing. After her last live album, I was expecting more challenging vocal pieces. Everything on this record is recorded as fluffily as possible.

Her voice sounds terrible on Money Changes Everything. The slower arrangement on She Bop is inadvertantly funny. The Puffy Ami Yumi appearance is just silly and distracting. Ani DiFranco is buried on Sisters of Avalon. The only highlight for me was the Sarah McLachlan turn on Time After Time.

None of these versions transcend the originals. The new songs have some nice singing, but have forgettable melodies. Perhaps I'm taking pop music too seriously, but I thought Cyndi at one time did, also.

3 out of 5 stars Almost gets there, but then misses.......2004-08-20

Pianist Chesky has interesting melodic and harmonic ideas. He's rounded up monster players. Somehow, it just doesn't ever fall together completely and satisfyingly. My problem was that the ideas, tone colors, tempos and rhythmic structures of all these pieces are just too similar. Gonzalez and Hidalgo play really pretty, really interesting medium tempo son tumbao all the way through, but why hire'em, and then limit them to what amounts to variations on a single groove? HOw about something in 6, or at least a rumba? How about some post-Dolphy/Maupin upper-register snarl from Mintzer, some muted bolero-tempo or shreiking bop-fusion work from Randy B?

5 out of 5 stars The Body Acoustic, a unifying work.......2004-06-27

This album is a tour-de-force. It unifies the musical universe into a coherent magical village.
No collection should be without it.

4 out of 5 stars Shows why the bass clarinet is best used sparingly.......2004-06-23

I really wanted to like this album. Featuring fine players (Randy Brecker, trumpet; Bob Mintzer, bass clarinet; David Chesky, piano; Andy Gonzales, bass; and Giovanni Hildago, congas), I had high expectations.

                They were not fulfilled.

Bottom line: The bass clarinet, an instrument with a distinct although eventually irritating sound signature, begins to cloy after a few numbers. That is why, I'm sure, its top practitioners, such as David Murray, use it sparingly.

Also, Chesky's piano seems to have been recorded rather diffidently, that is, it has insufficient presence, seemingly almost relegated to a background role. I don't know if this a technical or artistic problem (or both), but it annoys.

I'm open to the idea that my problems with this disc may be as much due to my own limitations as listener as with any intrinsic deficiencies with the disc itself, but someone would have to make a strong case for that for me to be convinced.

All in all, a nice try, but it didn't make it for me. Three and a half stars.

                5 out of 5 stars nice & easy.......2004-06-15

This album is the best I heard in a long time, Giovanni and Andy really impress me (as always) with their groove. I really recommend it - turn of your lights, sit or better yet lay down and enjoy it.
