The Bangles - Greatest Hits

The Bangles - Greatest Hits

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The Bangles' transformation from Merseybeat and garage-smart guitar band to near-definitive example of buffed-and-polished corporate popsters is one of the great rock mysteries of the '80s. What was up with that video for "Walk Like an Egyptian," anyway? Greatest Hits puts it all in perspective, tracing the curve from the post-Beatles group sneer of "Hero Takes a Fall" to the deadly earnest Susanna Hoffs showcase of "Eternal Flame." Shortly after that ballad hit No. 1, the group split. Now unfairly remembered as little more than space fillers on turn-of-the-decade airwaves, the Bangles here make a good case for their spirit, their own songwriting gifts, and, of course, those voices. --Rickey Wright

2 out of 5 stars total 80's cheese.......2007-07-13

I am a gen-xer and I remember these songs. but I have to admit my first reaction when I saw this CD was "the Bangles had hits, plural?"

I had looked up the CD for the version of "A Hazy Shade of Winter." unlike the Bangles, Paul Simon could write good songs.

They do sing well and they do provide a good overview of an 80's sound, but boy, there is so much better out there. in terms of 80's music, I would go with "graceland" by paul simon rather than this. or the talking heads, or depeche mode, or many other groups.

in terms of "girl bands," I think Indigo Girls are much much much better, to name just one example. in terms of female solo artists, musicians like Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill and Joni Mitchell I think are far more talented.

taste varies. they sing very well and they capture the sound, but they wanted to be viewed on par with Beatles? please. and I am not even a Beatles fan beyond casually.

5 out of 5 stars The Bangles - Greatest Hits.......2007-02-03

They were among the girl groups that marked the 80's. I still enjoy their music to this day. Five stars!

5 out of 5 stars Bangles greatest on one cd.......2007-01-20

I love the Bangles, this collection has everything I could ever want!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection.......2006-09-13

I haven't cared for much pop music since the late 60's, but the Bangles are enjoyable listening for anyone. The harshest reviewers of this album complain about not enough good songs and then go on to name 3 or 4 that are good. How many times does an album have more than one good hit song? This one has several outstanding songs and the remaining ones are good listening too. "Going Down to Liverpool" repeates a little too much, but I still like the song. Manic Monday, Eternal Flame and Hazy Shade of Winter are all excellent. Walk Like An Egyptian was a big hit and it's on here too of course. This is a good album and probably a good introduction to the Bangles. It has enough variety to keep it interesting and enough hits to probably more than justify the Greatest Hits title.

5 out of 5 stars Never gets old.......2006-05-12

The Bangles are great group that never goes out of style...I remember as a child purchasing the Manic Monday 45rpm.....and I played it over and over......When this was released..I bought it and of course all the hits are here....Standouts are If She Knew What She Wants,Manic Monday,Eternal Flame,In Your Room,Walk Like An Egyptian,Walking Down Your Street,A Hazy Shade Of Winter, and Be With You...........MAKE SURE YOU GET A COPY OF THIS GREAT ALBUM FROM A GREAT GROUP!

4 out of 5 stars Not SACD Surround.......2006-12-07

I love the Bangles music, however, I am very disappointed that this SACD is only a stereo release. Don't the Bangles deserve better?

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2002-10-16

I bought this because some SACD disks have multiple channels. This one does not. However. the sound difference is wonderful. I was actually surprised at how good it is. As for the Bangles, I personally consider them to be the most creative group of their time. Every song is a fresh sound. Musically sophisticated and constantly interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Some people are just clueless..........2002-08-15

The previous reviewer obviously doesn't know the difference between CD's and audio tapes, so I don't expect them to know the difference between redbook CD's and SACD's.

Anyways, this SACD version of this Bangles' album rules!!

4 out of 5 stars ahhh..my youth!.......2000-12-08

my sister had this tape when i was 7 and we used to listen to it in the car when we would go and family trips. i remember the whole family singing along to the tape. and just two weeks ago i found her copy of the tape and i had the best night just listen to it! this album rocks. its so awesome, and come on...who does love "eternal flame?"
