Album Details

Digitally Remastered Edition of the 1977 Album that Followed their Answer to Punk ("Too Old to Rock N Roll Too Young to Die"). This Set Contrasts Radically with It's Predecessor in that it features Some Some of their Most Melodic and Sweet Material Ever. Hard Rockers Intersperse with Greater Intensity, but this is One of Ian Anderson's Most Satisfying Albums in the Canon. As Always, Martin Barre's Guitar Simply Shines as One of the Band's Greatest Assets.

Jethro Tull's tenth studio album entitled Songs From The Wood was released in February of 1977.
The album saw the band (which comprised of lead singer/songwriter/flute player Ian Anderson plus guitarist Martin Barre, keyboard player John Evan, drummer Barriemore Barlow, bass player John Glascock whom were now joined by orchestrator David Palmer as second keyboard player) go in a different musical route after the dismal sales of 1976's concept album Too Old To Rock and Roll Too Young to Die (despite the fact that album is one of my personal favorites which was overlooked in the year of Peter Frampton Comes Alive). The Songs From The Wood album when released was the folkiest in sound that the band had recorded up to that point. Was it a good or bad thing, read on and find out as I did when I heard the album on vinyl late last year and then acquired the remastered CD a few months ago.
The title cut opens the album with a superb and funnyish sounding acapella singing which then gives way into a killer song with it ping-ponging between folk and classic hard rock tinged prog rock.
The next track is the acoustic number "Jack-in-the-Green" which tells about an old protector and nurturer of the English woods. The track also states if Jack still exists in this modern world of cars and power lines amongs other things. "Beltane" follows and is another great tune. We follow with the rocker "Hunting Girl" which uses a foxhunting equestrienne as a metaphor to a high-born woman who takes advantage of a lower class person. Great rocker. The first side closed with the band's second Holiday season track "Ring Out Solstice Bells" which is a great number to play at Christmas.
The second half of the album starts with "Velvet Green" which is as folk influenced as can be. The track is a love song set in the folk mentality. "The Whistler" follows and is another English folk influenced number which tells of a minstrel type individual. Next is the epic "Pibroch (Hat in Hand)" which is a rocker with some folk music influences but just burns! The original album ends with the folk number "Fire at Midnight" which celebrates a fellow relaxing by the fire with his love at the end of a long hard, day.
The Songs From The Wood album originally peaked at #8 on the Billboard album chart (to date Tull's last US Top 10 charting album) and was the band's first million seller since 1975's Minstrel in the Gallery.
In 2003, the album was re-released as a remastered CD with two additional songs. First is "Beltane" which is a great number about celebration of the Celtic festival Beltane. Next is a live BBC recording of "Velvet Green" which is probably from the BBC transmitted show which is out on bootleg as Songs From the Hippodrome.
Songs From The Wood is a great record, and still sounds fresh today.

I bought the original while stationed in Iceland and the Wood sounds much better today. The song " Pibroch " reminds me of medival acid rock. Each song has it identify and flows freely.

This has got to be the least meaningful, and most frivolous, Tull album ever. Apparently Ian had grown tired philosophical jousting, and wanted to take a mental vacation in the country with his pants zipped none too tightly.

Thank goodness it wasn't a permanent retirement.

My final analysis: Tull reached their musical apex with the power trio of Heavy Horses, Stormwatch and this wonderful musical experience known as Song for the Wood. Absolutely essential listening for prog lovers.

Tull was a controversial band back in the 70's. Were they a rock band at all? Were they even a prog. rock band like Yes and Floyd? Or were they something totally unclassifiable? With an enigmatic leader, Ian Anderson, they have some of the biggest hits ever, Aqualung and Locomotive Breath, both with plenty of radio play, and followed up that success with two albums that had only one song each (Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play, both which strangely became #1 albums- how is that possible?). Then in 1977, after a couple of other very successful albums, they popped out Songs From the Wood. This album rocks in a real woodsy sort of way. The title track sounds great on the remastered version, especially the vocals. Hunting Girl is a real standout too. This album stands as a musical work that will never go out of style. It is timeless and a keeper in your collection.

While countless fans flock to see soprano Renee Fleming's performances of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro because she's got the voice and the dramatic ability to handle such meaty roles, the versatile singer throws her fans a curveball on Haunted Heart, singing popular standards and ballads as well as a few altered classical pieces. In her liner notes, Fleming calls this album a "look back at the road not taken" -- she played a weekly gig in a jazz club while in school. Nonetheless, her feel for the material here is undeniable. Interestingly, she drops her voice a full octave from her usual tessitura, and the change reveals a robust gospel-oriented approach filled with dramatic breaths and moans. The lyrical Fred Hersch (piano) and the idiosyncratic Bill Frisell (guitar) provide support, and both are adventurous jazz players who create subtle and uniquely haunting backdrops. It adds up to an interesting cross-section of ideas well carried off by the generous talents of all involved. --Tad Hendrickson

2 out of 5 stars Sublime and ridiculous.......2007-06-13

The sublime: much of the artistry of this recording is about sound, and the subtle blending/responding of voice with guitar sounds and / or piano sounds. It is in the sensitive musical interplay between the artists where this effort shines. Definitely not recommended for road trips!

The ridiculous: Fleming ended the majority of most phrases in most of the songs with a guttural of some sort which for me becomes irritating to the point of distraction. These punctuations are mostly quite awful: really tasteless, clumsy, and overused big time and I'm amazed at how this ever got released. Without these ersatz testifyin' noises this CD would be stunning.

So, if you have the ability and inclination to edit out this garbage from your perception as you listen I think you'll be glad you experienced these artists at work together. (Unfortunately I'm not up to it).

Ugh. Like a manufactured home vs. a stick-built house, Fleming's manufactured (aka "training and technique") blues voice compares unfavorably to other jazz/blues singers/lounge acts. Would not, COULD not, listen to this recording straight through--one big long, breathy, minor key train wreck in the making. Took the CD on a road trip and had to pull over and remove from queue--either that or drive into a wall.

I have to admit, Haunted Heart was a lot better than I thought it would be,especially her recordings of "River", "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress, "My Cherie Amour" and "In my life".
I think this is the most artistically successful recording of Pop/Jazz by a classical singer. I enjoyed it even better than the Anna Sophie Von Otter'/ Elvis Costello CD.
The perspective I am coming from is that of a classical singer who started out as a pop singer/songwriter. I perform and teach cross-genre but love a world class instrument such as Flemming's
I wanted to get the perspective of a friend who used to sing jingles and is also a trained singer but is usually critical of any attempts that opera singers make at crossing -over.
My friend is very familiar with Flemming's voice, but did not recognise it in this context when I played the CD for her. Her reaction was very complimentary, although she did comment that the diction was a bit strange.
She then played it for her brother a well known jazz singer and arranger who had a somewhat negative reaction.He found the singing to be overly dark and round. He prefers a cleaner more 'spoken' approach to this style of singing. I understand this perspective and therefore personally prefer Ella to Sarah as well, but let's not get too picky. Obviously, Rene Flemming is of the Sarah Vaghan School of jazz singing, which is not too shabby.

I will continue to enjoy this CD and will wait for another opera diva to top this one. But, somehow I think the next really good CD of Pop/ jazz from an opera star will also come from Rene.

To those who have been unreasonably mean and negative towards her, I can only say you are not fit to polish her shoes!

This talented woman can sing anything. I really enjoyed this cd with the lights turned down and a glass of wine to relax after a very stressful day at work. Renee could definitely have another singing career outside of opera should she choose. Hearing her drop that gorgeous voice down one octave rivals the best chanteuses in the business - Cassandra Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Regina Belle, Sarah Vaughan, etc. This cd of different musical styles reminds me of Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson, two great singers whom could interpret any song genre and make their versions special. I loved all the songs and the standouts here are "Haunted Heart", "River", "My One and Only Love", "My Cherie Amour", "Cancao do Amor", and Beatles "In My Life", and "Hard Times Come Again No More".
I hope Renee keeps recording whatever catches her fancy because I'll certainly always listen.

Renee Fleming is an artist bringing us something new, and beautiful. The poor will always be with us as manifest in those who resent other's movement from their established zones. Renee Fleming is a great female voice with accomplishments her detractors will never have, but in their dreams.

I welcome Renee's elan demonstrated with her recent recordings, Love sublime with Brad Mehldau, and Haunted Heart with Fred Hersch and Bill Frissell. Bravery, fun, and talent combined by artists and for people who are listening. Hearing long time favorites Mehldau, Hersch, and Frissell is all the more sublime.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

From the 1700s to the mid-1900s, Britian ruled most of the world at some time or another. Part of this experience was the exportation of the English language, English bureaucracy, and the British school system (headmasters, uniforms, standardized testing) to places as disparate as Canada, Singapore, India and Egypt. Yet somehow, music students around the world learn to play Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, or some other continental composer. British music did not get widespread attention until the Beatles. This is surprising given that English composers produced music in ballets, symphonies, overtures, operas and just about every other style and form known. Maybe the reason why is that many locals' first taste of British music was imperial music played upon the entrance of their overlords, or in military parades meant to cower them. Samples of such music are provided in this CD from naxos. Offering works from various English composers from the 1800s to early 1900s, this album leaves out the more melodic and evocative works of English music such as Vaughn-Williams' Greensleeves, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance, or Jupiter by Holst. Instead, the focus is on music played at ceremonies, whether they be parades, crownings, burials, etc... The result is a nicely-themed CD that is unique in its contents. The sound quality is great, though the orchestration is only good. For example, title piece of Rule Britannia is played much better on other albums. Note that the works on this CD are pure British; no Irish, Scottish or Welsh influences. Overall, a nice CD to listen to.

This CD offers an excellent sampler of traditional British music. If you have watched Chariots Of Fire you will recognize Jerusalem By Parry(the final scene at Harold Abraham's funeral). This is a beautiful selection. The Tam O'Shanter Overture dispells the often unjustified characterization of the stuffy Englishman and is a rousing piece. All in all a very enjoyable CD. Buy it!

It is a good choice of tunes played often in England. The quality of recording is good, the choice of tunes is good too and the orchestration is good too. It is a good CD to buy.

This one is for all those who want a splendid introduction to the music this CD offers. It would make a lovely Christmas present for the discriminating listener. My favorite is "Jerusalem!"

Usually, most soundtracks plain suck. But this is a very well thought out, arranged mix that keeps you involved the whole album through. It's not one that you put on for just one or two tracks. Standout tracks include Spain, the Eels(Beck Jr.), Vic Chestnutt and Michael Stipe.

Lauren Wood, best known for her hit "Fallen" has put together an album of a dozen songs that takes this reviewer on a trip back to the Beatles. With at least 4-5 real hits waiting to don the airwaves, there are no duds in the bunch whatsoever. The ballad Back in Time, is so heart wrenching, it almost hurts to listen to the words. The Beatles influence is so strong, it was a little spooky. You can hear McCartney bass lines with that distinct melodic tone as well as Lennon-type vocals and guitar. Her voice is what makes the album complete. At times she's a deep contralto, other times she sings thin wispy BV's that blend with the music perfectly. The levels of musicalnship is very high. When was the last time you heard a cymbal cresando with mallets played this well (in the sure hit "Back in Time")? Look for the hits to be 1)"The Big House" song about subdivisions buring like the Amazon 2)" Back in time" - tear-out-your-heart ballad. 3) "I'm Usually Obsessed" - chicken-picken (dang near Country-Funk) guitar 4) "Twisted Reality" -complete w/ that trademark Hofner Beatle bass. Lauren Wood is one of those rare women, she has both talent and voice, and proves that she can belt with the best. Using reflections of her life, Lauren digs deep into her soul, and comes up with many fabulous tracks. Check out her web site. It's great. The bonus track of "Fallen" simply doesn't belong with the twelve new tracks. I'm sad to see such a bendable voice as Wood's get lost in all too familiar rock licks. She can do so much in modulating her voice, that to hear thse songs indicates a loss of direction for her. I hope she'll return to what made her distinctive.

One of the best albums in recent years is going for a penny. Forget the UPC code stuff, this is the true mark of the devil -- a one penny asking price for an album so staggeringly good I'll use an adverb to describe it. Draw a line in the sand. Step on the right side of it. Buy this album. For god sake's, just do it.

I find it really sad that this album is going for $0.01 at the moment on marketplace.

It's a great album. I saw Wood live supporting Paul Weller and bought the album on the strength of the performance. It's one of those gems in my CD collection that I'm glad I've got.

I find it really tragic that a band with such a distinct sound just seemed to stop dead in their tracks and never produced that second album.

Those of you who doubt this, gamble a cent (and shipping) - you'll probably find it's well worth it.

This band sounds like a cross between Nils Lofgren, Neil Young & Bob Dylan. You are probably now thinking, "Sounds good." Problem is there is nothing special at all here. Totally bland.

This is another one of those "unknown bands" that suddenly sneaks, up on you, and you wonder why you've never heard of them. Apparently these guys mainly play small venues, which is really appropriate, because they have a classicly intimate feeling. Very relaxing acoustic music-- almost a little folky, but in a good way. "Stay You"'s lyrics are really good, and the rest of the songs have the same feeling. You are instantly relieved to find someone who talks about real life things in such a great way. Not obtuse, but still meaningful. Play it in the car, it sounds best as you're driving.

    It isn't easy to record the Last Night of the Proms.

    An essential part of the experience is the audience participation - clapping in time to the Sailor's Hornpipe, bellowing out the chorus of Rule Britannia, the amazing sound of 7,000 people singing Parry's Jerusalem, even the occasional hoots, bangs and other interruptions (as long as they're occasional). It's important to capture this, otherwise all you get is a concert.

    Unfortunately this recording seems biased towards the audience. The orchestral sound was muddy, but every pop, squeak, hoot from the audience was crystal clear. Towards the end I was hoping that someone would strangle the idiot with the popgun who was sitting to the right of the auditorium, and interrupting all the quieter passages.

    Oh well - put it down to the acoustics of the Albert hall.

    I still enjoyed the recording.

    WITHOUT A DOUBT THE MOST ROUSING CHORAL VERSION OF THESE TWO WORKS EVER RECORDED. BRYN TERFEL'S RENDITION OF RULE BRITANNIA LITERALLY BRINGS DOWN THE HOUSE WHILE THE ELGAR WILL BRING TEARS TO YOUR EYES.

    The performance made of Belshazzar's Feast at this Prom concert is the best I have heard. Having played in a performance of this work, I can attest to its difficulty, yet the BBC Symphony, Singers, Chorus, Bryn Terfel, and Andrew Davis make it sound effortless. The final moments of the work, as the chorus sings of the Israelites jubilation at the fall of Babylon, are some of the most astounding I've heard on a recording.
