I love the dave Matthews Band, but this solo album doesn't live up to expectations. I find it boring and lacking soul. I expected to like it and am disappointed I don't.

With the ill-advised miserable solo song "Gravedigger" (and its accompanying quick-cut video of equally miserable images) Dave Matthews essentially brought his career to a screeching halt, at least for those who aren't diehard fans. What on earth was he thinking? "Grrravedigger..." Who wants to listen to this dismal whining more than once?

I'm a fan of Dave and his band. This collection is probably the most even, consistently good "whole album" listening experience in Dave's body of work. Every CD of his has gems that shine brightly, but from the first track, Dave takes you into the post "Busted Stuff anger" reflection. And I can't yet decide which version of Gravedigger I love the most. I first fell in loved with the acoustic version as the strings come up during the second verse and just grow into the rest of the song, through the "Ring around the rosie" bridge. But then there's the powerful "electric" version of the song that grows into a DM growling wail at the end. I'm glad they're both on the disc.

"Save Me" is an excellent example of Dave's trademark ability to combine the spiritual and the sensual-thumping into a smokey bit of audio divinity. "Stay or Leave" gets a lot of play on the acoustic rock satellite radio channels I listen to, and deservedly so. All of these songs benefit from the textured and expert percussion that Dave's band supplies and the ability Dave has to work the upper range of his voice ("Oh," and especially "An' Another Thing") as well as the lower ("Trouble").

The minimal, haunting "Some Devil" title track is another favorite of mine. Just Dave and a somewhat percussive, low electric guitar.

I could go on and on. Don't take my word for it. Look at the other thoughtful reviews and get this CD.

I am a big fan of rootsy, acoustic rock with some jam band style, but not too much jam band style. This album is a fantastic treat that consistently delivers great music, song after song. If you enjoy this album and are looking for some similar albums then I recommend the following:
1) Beneath These Fireworks by Matt Nathanson
2) Good To Be Here by Ernest Goodlife Band
3) 1972 by Josh Rouse

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

I own just about every CD that Dave Matthews has ever released, and this is one of my favorites for sure. The songs on this CD are so full of soul and emotion. He really hit it out of the park on this one. A great CD for any DMB fan or anyone who like a little blues in with their rock.

Some of the songs on this album seem to sound the same but there are plenty of good ones that make up for this. The best songs on this CD are definitely "Dodo", "Gravedigger", "Stay Or Leave" and "Baby". The bonus CD added makes this a must-have, especially for acoustic versions of "Grey Street" and "Stay Or Leave" with Tim Reynolds. Actually all the songs on the bonus CD are great...maybe even better than the whole "Some Devil" CD.

I've had this cd for several months now, and I am still listening to it, and hearing new things every time I play it. This is not in-your-face music. Dave plays with finesse as well as power. Every once in a while, I think I'm hearing Peter Gabriel. or even Eddie Vedder, but those two guys are cool too!

The title track alone is worth the purchase. Then there's the next track, "Trouble" which is a terrific song that will work well with his band on future tours. Dave Matthews is a strong songwriter and musician and he plays with tremendous conviction and emotion. What else would you want from an artist?

      With the ill-advised miserable solo song "Gravedigger" (and its accompanying quick-cut video of equally miserable images) Dave Matthews essentially brought his career to a screeching halt, at least for those who aren't diehard fans.       I'm a fan of Dave and his band. This collection is probably the most even, consistently good "whole album" listening experience in Dave's body of work. Every CD of his has gems that shine brightly, but from the first track, Dave takes you into the post "Busted Stuff anger" reflection. And I can't yet decide which version of Gravedigger I love the most. I first fell in loved with the acoustic version as the strings come up during the second verse and just grow into the rest of the song, through the "Ring around the rosie" bridge. But then there's the powerful "electric" version of the song that grows into a DM growling wail at the end. I'm glad they're both on the disc.

      "Save Me" is an excellent example of Dave's trademark ability to combine the spiritual and the sensual-thumping into a smokey bit of audio divinity. "Stay or Leave" gets a lot of play on the acoustic rock satellite radio channels I listen to, and deservedly so. All of these songs benefit from the textured and expert percussion that Dave's band supplies and the ability Dave has to work the upper range of his voice ("Oh," and especially "An' Another Thing") as well as the lower ("Trouble").

      The minimal, haunting "Some Devil" title track is another favorite of mine. Just Dave and a somewhat percussive, low electric guitar.

      I could go on and on. Don't take my word for it. Look at the other thoughtful reviews and get this CD.

      I am a big fan of rootsy, acoustic rock with some jam band style, but not too much jam band style. This album is a fantastic treat that consistently delivers great music, song after song. If you enjoy this album and are looking for some similar albums then I recommend the following:

      This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

      This is a really authentic,powerful country blues recording by the legendary, mandolin player, Yank Rachell. Loved the great stories that Yank tells on here about Hammie Nixon and Sonny Boy Williamson. All the players on here are top rate!
