After five years and one do-over later, Seal presents a fourth album that finds the singer growing with his audience. The disc’s opener, "Get It Together," melds a quiet "live" moment into a horn-and-string disco number, setting the stage for the rest of the disc, which is largely a nod to Detroit- and Philly-R&B. The British-born musician pulls it off. His rasp and emotive, positive vocals are well suited for the retro stylings he attempts. "Waiting for You" will flood the dance floor, and he’s unafraid to dig deep for the ballads--Marvin Gaye would approve. The funk is real, but saddled with a pop safety net, and the upbeat tracks need a helping hand from a good remixer before they are as compelling as his seminal singles "Killer" and "Crazy." Seal never goes all out in any direction and this coolness, combined with Trevor Horn’s perfectionist production, plants the album inescapably in the realm of adult contemporary (although this is as good as adult contemporary gets). On "Let Me Roll" Seal salutes the album’s influences by proclaiming he’s "not too proud to beg." If that were actually true, the songs would have been that much better for it. --Beth Massa

4 out of 5 stars A shining, hip, well-crafted return.......2006-12-29

Seal took his time in releasing his fourth album. Reportedly, after the release of HUMAN BEING in 1998, Seal set to work on his fourth album; he had a whole album's worth of material, but he was unhappy with it and so he scrapped it. Instead, he began work on the second version of his fourth album, the version that was finally released: SEAL IV. It's a shining, hip, and well-crafted return for Seal. His longtime producer and friend Trevor Horn steers Seal in a different direction on this album, away from the ethereal techno-rock on Seal's previous albums and toward a more R&B sound influenced by the motown music of the 1960s. Fans needn't fret, though, because this is still unmistakably Seal. Horn does something else, too: he puts the focus on Seal's voice, which as anyone who's ever heard his music knows is a wise move.

Some of Seal's finest and most enjoyable songs are on this album. In typical Seal fashion, he opens the album with a song - in this case, the bouncy, upbeat "Get It Together" - and closes it with a reprise of that song. One of my favorite parts of the album is the arrangement of the songs, which is really great. We go from the light, soaring "Love's Divine" (which received a lot of airplay when it was released) to the heavy, thumping "Waiting For You" (another track highlight). "Let Me Roll" finds Seal strongly declaring "I'm not too proud to beg"; on the subsequent track, he sings about how much he misses the touch of his lover. Who but Seal could fluctuate from strong, pounding songs to dreamy, moving serenades with such ease? Seal takes a shot at reggae with "Where There's Gold", and "Heavenly ... (Good Feeling)" is one of Seal's most dazzling ballads. It's the following track that's my favorite, though: "Tinsel Town", an utterly gorgeous song, a composition eclipsed in beauty only by Seal's own "Kiss from a Rose".

Seal's songwriting isn't as superb as it was on his first two albums, but he gives each and every song 110% (it was his lack of effort that was the fatal flaw on his previous album). His voice is just as amazing as ever. The only thing that may turn some people away from SEAL IV is that it's easily his most tranquil album, though it definitely has its share of forceful tunes. It's also one of his most charming and sweet, however, and few are more charming or sweet than Seal. SEAL IV is a great album, and though it may not be Seal's finest achievement, it's more than enough incentive to eagerly anticipate his next album.

4 out of 5 stars Bueno, pero no es impactante.......2006-12-13

5 out of 5 stars Great ride to work........2006-03-12

I love this CD. Seal is a great singer, it makes the ride to work something to look forward to.

5 out of 5 stars A treat for the ears!.......2006-03-11

This is without doubt one of Seal's best works. He ranges from new age to raggae to blues seamlessly. One of my favorite purchases. I am well on my way to wearing this cd out.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Album.......2006-02-25

This is arguably Seal's best album! Strong vocals and varying tempos. This is the first Seal album where ALL the songs are great, rather than a select few.

I was really eager to listen to this album because I love Pinkham's music so much, and also because it took over a month to ship. I finally had a listen and while at times the voices seem a bit unbalanced, it actually is a very well-performed cd. nice work.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing but I just keep hoping...........2006-01-27

I have been a big Seal fan ever since his first album came out. He became a household name with Seal II becuase its an amazingly deep and well produced album with great songwriting and vocal performances. Getting his single on the Batman soundtrack didnt hurt sales, either. When Seal III came out and was a commercial flop, I was not suprised. But poor sales dont mean an album is bad, just as big album sales dont necessarily mean a great album. Seal III is an artistic triumph. Some of the songs (ie No Easy Way)are utterly beautiful. Please give it a listen, readers. That being said, we come to the topic of the new album, Seal IV. I was waiting for something at least as good as Seal III, and hopeing for something even better. Like its predecessor it also appears to be a commercial letdown. I personally have not even listend to it many times. The reason for that is that I just can't stand hearing it for more than a few minutes at a time. There is one HUGE,GLARING PROBLEM with Seal IV. For me , that problem lies in the fact that Seal chose to Pitch Correct his voice on on this album, and it sticks out BIG TIME! Seal, I hope you read this review! Your voice shouldn't ever be tampered with in that way again! It takes the soul out of the vocal performances! I really am disappointed that you allowed that to happen. It sucks. The subtle pitch imperfections that are part of a natural vocal are GLARINGLY missing. You dont need to resort to such studio tricks. You're no amatuer. Dont follow that trend! Its a crappy trend. Its the type of trick that producers for film songs resort to when trying to get Eddie Murphy's "Donkey" to sing on pitch. Ah, the heights from which you have fallen. I pray that your next album wont suffer from such a blatent identity crisis. Your unique raspy voice is one of the things you are known and loved for. Why tamper with it? Please! I anxiously await Seal V!

      4 out of 5 stars IV stars.......2005-01-30

Although I've always liked Seal, this is actually the first album I picked up from him. I read a lot of reviews and most people are saying that his first two albums were his best ones. Maybe that's true, but that doesn't mean there aren't any gems to be found on his fourth album.

As usual, you'll find some nice ballads on here, like "Don't Make Me Wait", "Tinsel Town" and "Love's Divine". And the funky tracks are also good, as evidenced by the first single, "Waiting For You". Seal also does a good job of covering otherwise played-out subject matter, like the we-are-the-world song "Get It Together" and the keep-your-head-up song "Where There's Gold". Unfortunately, though, I can't say the same about "Let Me Roll", a rather silly attempt at a club-rocker.

I didn't really care for "Touch" either, but that's okay because songs like the laid back "Loneliest Star" will remind you why you picked this album up to begin with. And no offense, but I wonder if the reviewers that complained that Seal isn't getting any airplay in the States have ever heard of VH1. Anyway, Seal IV definitely gets the seal of approval.

Seal IV has many strong moments and it's worth owning,
but it's far his best work. Seal put the bar so high
with Human Being and 1994...pure genius...

5 out of 5 stars SEAL IV - Best Album!.......2004-06-17

Anyone who has a negative comment about Seal's new CD has "NO" ear for music! This is the best CD from him ever, the others were good, yes, but this one...EVERY song is totally awesome! You'll hear his creativeness expressed in every song. His voice reaches out to you with every song, every verse, every chorus. With this CD, he is a musical genius! I'm totally in love with this CD! Especially track #3 - Waiting for You! Oh, what can I say about this song...it's so lovely, it's a loving song, in fact, every one is a loving song. They all express love, emotion and your inner being. A suggestion to all of you - Go and buy this CD, no downloads! If you have a listening ear, an ear for great, real music, this is the one to buy! You won't be disappointed!

      2 out of 5 stars Seal IV.......2004-06-02

I am a huge fan of Seal's first 3 albums, so I rushed out to buy this one the minute it came out. What a disappointment!! Most of the songs sound like old remixes of Curtis Mayfield tunes. The only 2 with that eerie signature 'Seal' sound are 'heavenly' and 'tinsel town'. I'd say go to Itunes....listen to the songs...buy the tunes you like (if there are any) and call it a day.

      5 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait...(plus a concert review).......2003-12-02

I'll get right to the point here.

Fantastic CD that is well worth the wait. Seal's music is such that I can listen to it over and over again and not tire of listening to it. This CD is exactly the same. Every single track is good.

I just got back from Denver where I saw Seal live at the Fillmore auditorium. Unbelievable. If you think this CD is good, wait until you see him live.

      Fantastic CD...even better performed live.

(Note to SEAL....when do we get a 'live' CD?)

      BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars What stupid packaging!.......2003-10-09

The latest CD is nice soundwise, but it has the stupidest packaging I've ever seen. What genius thought this up? I listen to CDs in the car ... this ridiculous LP-style packaging prohibits me from carrying the jewel case, the songs or anything else about the CD. If I were Seal, I would dump this packaging immediately and send a copy of the jewel-case book to all Amazon clients who bought this. Amazon should drop this if Seal doesn't. The so-called "special packaging" is a big disappointment for most buyers.

4 out of 5 stars Music excellent, Packaging bizarre.......2003-09-24

The CD is excellent but the packaging is insane. No wonder there is no picture. It comes in a full size vinyl case with no jewel box. Bizarre! Don't waste your money, get the standard CD.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-09-20

With the release of SEAL IV, I can only say that I am left wanting. In the beginning, Seal's BEGINNINGS was groundbreaking and a truly superb body of work. Seal's 2nd release entitled SEAL, not only avoided the 'Sophomore Jinx', but topped his debut and established him as a truly innovative writer and musician -- leaving me breathless and in awe. However, his 3rd release HUMAN BEING slipped and although memorable and creative, never quite captured the intensity, emotion, or spirit of his first 2 albums. Like many, I highly anticipated the release of SEAL IV. But after several listenings, I have yet to be tantalized as I was with "Crazy" or moved as I was "Violet" and "Don't Cry". On IV, the arrangements are barely interesting, lyrically cliched and the chords/progressions tired -- lacking the edge of his earlier work. It's almost as if he couldn't quite nail it and settled for a less. Light fare such as this is best left to those with limited imagination -- not to a deep and gifted artist such as Seal. Originality, intellect, and sense of self are the keys to Seal's musical soul -- which he so skillfully poured out to us on 1 & 2. IV leaves me just short of bored. Reach deep my brother, you can find it again. But find it soon. This listener is losing faith.

5 out of 5 stars Another GREAT one from Seal.......2003-09-14

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this cd and I surely wasn't disappointed when I did. Great vocals and lyrics. Love it!

          Album Description

Award-winning composer Jack Gottlieb ranks at the forefront of American music, both for his theater and concert works as well as his works of Jewish inspiration. The world-premiere recording of Love Songs for Sabbath, a deeply personal and artistic setting of Sabbath liturgy, combining the spoken word with music, is performed by celebrated actress Tovah Feldshuh (four Tony nominations for Best Actress, four Drama Desk, and numerous other awards). Jack Gottlieb's mastery of classical and popular idioms is delightfully apparent in Psalmistry and Shout for Joy—lively, jazz influenced choral works that celebrate life.
