IN TERMS OF RUSH ALBUMS THIS IS THEM AT THEIR PRIME. A NON STOP ROCKER!!
I FIND MYSELF WISHING THEY HAD PUT 10 SONGS ON HERE INSTEAD OF 7. BECAUSE IT'S OVER AND YOU STILL WANT MORE. EVERY CUT GIVES 100% OF THE RUSH EXPERIANCE. THEIR NEXT BEST ALBUM IS "2112". BUT THIS ONE IS HEAD OF THE CLASS.

What a rush.......2007-07-24

I vacillated on this one, between 4 and 5 stars. I went with 4 because the album just kind of falters some in the second half. The first half is spectacular: Tom Sawyer, Limelight and Red Barchetta are all awesome. The Carmera Eye is good but too long. The final tracks on teh CD are solid, but not up to the mark of the others. Overall, the CD has a lot of punch for an album with compartively few tracks [tho it does log in at 40 minutes as a whole]. Strong 4 stars, almost got to 5.

The Greatest Rush Ever Made!!!!.......2007-06-13

Moving Pictures is both one of my favorite albums of all time and one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Perfect in every aspect. This is Rush unleashed! After the near perfection of previous efforts like Hemispheres and Farewell To Kings and Permanent Waves, Rush came together and created their masterpiece. I could listen to it a million times and still never get tired of the prog-rock trio's best effort.


Tom Sawyer - Hands down one of the coolest songs ever! Here the boys from Toronto show that not only are they excellent musicians, but they can write a song with hooks from hell. Memorable and classic. I love this tune.

Red Barchetta - My Uncle has a country place that no one knows about... Another classic Rush tune. Written in the 1984-esque future-gone-wrong perspective with an idea garnered from a cool sci-fi story. This about a boy and his car and the fact that driving has become illegal. Great stuff.

YYZ - One of the most killer instrumental tunes ever recorded. This song rox! Geddy, Alex & Neil in complete show-off jam mode. Solid.

Limelight - Another of my personal favorites. A song about the other side of fame & fortune. From the opening riff, this song rocks! All the world's indeed a stage and we are merely players! Excellent!

The Camera Eye - If Moving Pictures is said to have a soft spot, Camera Eye would be it, although I happen to love this song. Clocking just over eleven minutes, this is a sprawling, moody tune along the lines of Xanadu or Natural Science. A sleeper, but still strong.

Witch Hunt - I have so many favorites on this album, and Witch Hunt is another. Written about prejudice and mob mentality, Witch Hunt is part three of the 'Fear Trilogy' (The Enemy Within & The Weapon being the other two parts) that they performed live for a long time. Killer tune. Those who know what's best for us should rise and save us from ourselves....

Vital Signs - Great ending song to a magnificent album. Short and sweet and too the point. Neil's lyrics flow on their own. Everybody's got to deviate from the norm.


Overall, Rush went into the studio and came up big with Moving Pictures. This is the culmination of their earlier years solidified into something both powerful and perfect. There will never be another Rush album like Moving Pictures. This is the peak. Great songs will follow but there will never be that cohession that this album brings. Great album to start with if you are just getting acquainted with Rush. An old favorite for those of us who have been following them forever.

While Rush has so many great albums this one is in my top three.
A classic cd from the 80's with such melodic songs as Red Barchetta and
Witch Hunt. Plus the two mega hits we all love. If you are wanting to forget your worries, put this in your cd player and sit back.

Best album ever.......2007-05-11

OK folks, I don't want to sound over the top here but only one album can be the "best ever" and this is it for me. Every track is outstanding.

This came out in my freshman year of HS but since I had no older siblings it generally passed me by until Signals came out. I picked it up, went to the New World Man tour where they played every song from 'Moving Pictures' except for 'Witch Hunt' and hence... I found my favorite band. As soon as I had the money I went to the store and bought up every Rush album including 'Moving Pictures'.

At that time a new technology was being developed -- the Compact Disc. 'Moving Pictures' was one of a handful of albums chosen for this new experimental technology and they could not have chosen a better set of songs for this experiment. If I remember correctly the CD cost about $20 which was about 3 times the cost of vinyl. It was well worth the cost.

Everybody knows about Tom Sawyer and Limelight -- played on classic rock stations to this day. They have played these two songs on every concert as well and after 25 years I have almost had enough. Notice I say 'almost'.

Unfortunately, along with YYZ, side B gets overlooked. I listen to side B more often than side A because they are never played on the radio and the quality is just as good. I remember being completely fascinated at how an 11 minute song (Camera eye) can have such little singing and come out so fantastic. The traveling Lifeson arpeggios are simple yet clever and sound so outstanding with the other instruments as you travel from NY to London in a variety of time signatures that change like a well oiled Mercedes.

Witch hunt makes you feel like you are in a Salem witch trial with the mob stirring in the background. The synth in this song is some of their best use of keyboards ever.

Vital Signs sounds a little different than the rest of the album but it is a perfect ending to a perfect record. "Unstable condition. A symptom of Life." The end of the song is so strong it makes you want to hit the repeat button and start it all over again with Tom Sawyer.

Something on "What About Me" from DAYS OF INNOCENCE........2004-07-12

I was actually surfing around for reviews and the like for Moving Pictures's DAYS OF INNOCENCE COLLECTION when I read Clint Grabill's review of it. To be honest, this is not a review of that aforementioned CD, but more of a note of interest to anyone (Clint included) who likes Moving Pictures, or, as is often the case with us 80s Gen-Xers, that sublime ballad "What About Me".

Anyway, like Clint, I love that song; not many songs quite tugs at the heartstrings as much as that one. And like Clint, it also took a few years before I found that song, on a CD, of all places. That was way back in 1991, when I was holiday in Melbourne. The CD is called TRAX AUSTRALIAN MADE II, and is released in 1988 by EMI Records Australia. It is a compilation of some of the best songs I've ever heard this side of awesome. Like the name suggests, the artistes on this CD are all Aussies (do correct me if I'm wrong, though), and what a brilliant bunch they are! Rather than delve into the details of the CD, go check it out for yourself. If you liked WAM, or that good ol' unique Aussie brand of pop/rock, I wager that you will not be disappointed. Hell, I'm still listening to it, 13 years on....

Great songs Great Band.......2004-02-23

I was lucky enough to have seen Moving Pictures live a few times during there peak period (82-84).They were truely awsome, and lead singer Alex Smith sang with loads of passion and power.
This album does not capture ther live brilliance, but its still a great album. I belive if it had have been produced by a big name producer(the sound is a little thin in places)and promoted right, it would have been a worlwide hit, though it was a huge album here in oz.If you like well written songs about teenage romance and wild days of youth, in a Springsteen/Eddie and the Cruisers type of vain, you will like this.Glad its available on CD finaly!

Brings back a lot of Good memories........2002-02-10

This Album brings tears to my eyes. Of all the goodtimes had during the early 80's. For those who like the songwriting skills look up the band 1927 from Australia, as you will find the same songwriting skills in the cds released as they are mostly written or co-written by G. Frost. By the way comebacks can come at anytime. You "NEVER" Know.

Moving Pictures - A Review From Down Under.......2000-12-25

I too was a 'teenager' of the 80's, and Moving Pictures were one of my favourite bands. Being a local band for me here in Melbourne, Australia, I used to see them live at many venues. They were an awesome band with a huge following. Alex Smith, the singer, had a great voice and singing the classic "What About Me" got the crowd going everywhere they played. A number of the songs of the album got into the top 10 charts here in OZ, but WAM stayed there for over two months. They released a second album called "Matinee' which I have on vinyl. It had a few good songs on it as well. The band split up and the lead songwriter (Gary, who played keyboards I think) went on to join another band called 1927). I never realised Moving Pictures actually made it to the US. They are one Aussie band who have not made a comeback!.

I am definitely a throwback from the 80's and one of those who will buy a "record", tape or CD for one song. I heard the song What About Me, and I was immediately intrigued. I searched hi and low for this song for years, and I mean years and finally got my hands on a 45 rpm a few years ago. But try and play a 45 in your car or burn a good tape of it. I lucked out every so often and they would play it on the radio maybe once or twice a year. I nearly crapped myself when I saw a CD was available. So now I have it and can play it over and over and over and over.

Repetitive Indie.......2006-03-01

This is an extremely repetitive CD. Patterns, riffs, and their style is completely repeated on every song. Don't get me wrong, every song is incredible. From opener Emancipation with descending guitar patterns, and higher octaves with vocal melodies with striking catchy lyrics saying "I'm Your Slave" you realize this band has some incredible talent with such simple riffs. The record presents these songs nearly like the sound you would hear at their live show.

Overall, great sound, some melodies that will never be forgotten, and a throwback style that this group's fans can enjoy for the time being. Not original I'll give you that but amazing 80's and funk-disco basslines. Triplet pattern in many songs, including their old EP. It's become the "Moving Units Bassline." Excluding a few tracks near the end of the album, all the songs are dancy but not extremely catchy. Killer/Lover sounds like an ambient dark night on drugs. They grow on you eventually because their guitar is raw, just like The Rapture and although Blake isn't the best singer in the world, his vocals that were recorded (probably after 300 takes) sound perfect on the album.

Moving in a Different Direction.......2006-02-18

I picked up this album after I heard that they were coming to Des Moines to open up for one of my all time favorite bands, Nine Inch Nails. I figured, hey, Trent has a good ear for musical talent, after finding great talent out there like Manson, Prick, and Pig, so how could he go wrong with Moving Units? What an unusual pick, if you ask me. This band seems like a new wave ska band that was somehow transported to the present time from the eighties. Not that that is a bad thing. They have really catchy hooks, and after a couple of listening, they really grow on you. Not my favorite band by far, but definately not a bad one either. Spectacular tracks on the album include "Anyone and Scabs". Give it a listen. They just might grow on you.

Dangerous Dreams - Moving Units.......2005-08-02

i guess you could put this band into the retro-rock phase that's taking over right now but i don't want to.
even though, moving units have some of that retro-rock flavor, they also surprise you with their bass lines and songs that could be played in clubs. all in all, after listening to their EP (which is very good as well!) this is a CD that does not disappoint.

yeah yeah!...(no.).......2005-05-31

With a vocal delivery full to the bursting point with "ah ah ah"s (recalling none other than the Count from Sesame Street), overly busy basslines, and overt influences-du-jour, this album drags and disappoints. Too bad, "Between Us and Them" is a catchy tune -- it might even snare you into buying this CD like it did me. It will gather dust on your shelf.

Good CD. "Between Us and Them" is a great song, and I disagree with the reviews that this just copies the other NY dance-punk bands. I think it's a lot better than the Rapture and so on, and it's more catchy and less fake-funky. It's a little repetitive, but I enjoy it.

If you like 1927 you will love this. It a bit less pollished than the later recordings under the new name(1927) but Ithink that it is just as good or even better. So buy it NOW.

Everybody knows about Tom Sawyer and Limelight -- played on classic rock stations to this day. They have played these two songs on every concert as well and after 25 years I have almost had enough. Notice I say 'almost'.

Unfortunately, along with YYZ, side B gets overlooked. I listen to side B more often than side A because they are never played on the radio and the quality is just as good. I remember being completely fascinated at how an 11 minute song (Camera eye) can have such little singing and come out so fantastic. The traveling Lifeson arpeggios are simple yet clever and sound so outstanding with the other instruments as you travel from NY to London in a variety of time signatures that change like a well oiled Mercedes.

Witch hunt makes you feel like you are in a Salem witch trial with the mob stirring in the background. The synth in this song is some of their best use of keyboards ever.

Vital Signs sounds a little different than the rest of the album but it is a perfect ending to a perfect record. "Unstable condition. A symptom of Life." The end of the song is so strong it makes you want to hit the repeat button and start it all over again with Tom Sawyer.

Amazing! The next big thing........2004-08-04

This EP is simply great. It's just a bummer that there are only 4 songs on it. Fortunately, MU is working on their first major label record right now, and it should be out in a few months. I predict that these guys will be the next big band. If you like the Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Irving, etc, check out this record. Very "cool" "hip" garage rock. And it's only a couple bucks. What have you to lose?

Hot Hot Heat is a good band to compare Moving Units to, but they are in no uncertain terms "the same". The songs on this EP are catchy and upbeat, with a distinctive vocal sound. On the first listen you will toe-tap, on the second you'll hum along, and by the third time around you'll be familiar with lines like, "Hello...okay...hello...let's play" and "let's go...to the...disco...for melo...drama." You'll be tickled by Moving Units take on the club scene and social relationships. This is a near-perfect grouping of songs, faulted only by the songs overlapping eachother in pace. An excellent buy for the price.

For four songs under 5 minutes each, I'm not going to kill you with a massive word count here, but the Moving Units are definitely worth mentioning. Take equal parts Strokes and Rapture with a dash of Interpol, make them Californian, and you'd get something pretty close to this EP. Yep, there's ZERO innovation here, but they do it so much better than all the other 2nd-tier wannabe disco-punks that you'll forgive 'em (you'll put away your Erase Errata and Go Go Go Airheart albums for sure); at best, on track one, they nearly match their influences, with an infectiously danceable bassline straight out of "Echoes", some minor key wailing cribbed from "Turn on the Bright Lights", and a melodic chorus that's pure Strokes. If you like this stuff, it's guaranteed to hit the spot. No masterpiece, for sure, but at the price it's an absolute STEAL.

I saw these three balding guys at the Glass House. I'm so glad I had a few drinks. This band was hot a few months ago but the shows have really started to thin out. As bad as this EP is they're worse live. The lead singer really is bad. I'd rather listen to the emergency broadcast signal. I have heard worse bands though, but do high school marching ones count?

GREAT MUSIC! THE KIDS LOVE IT!.......2007-07-11

My two-year-old nephew COMPLETELY and INSTANTLY FELL IN LOVE with this CD when we introduced it to him when he was one. He still loves it and we've even played it to make him go to bed when he's refusing!

I don't think you'll regret buying this CD at all. The music is really ENJOYABLE. Kids of different ages in our family don't seem to get tired of it at all!

P.S.: We even decided to get my nephew also the DVD's in "THE WHEELS ON THE BUS" series and he really, absolutely LOVES them too! I also recommend them. They're great products and teach important values in a very fun and lively format!

But not great. These tunes are harmonically and rhythmically four-square and straightforward. Hearing them once is plenty (OK, twice). On the other hand, if you want to hear the GREAT Russ Barenberg catch him on Skip, Hop and Wobble (which is what brought me to his solo work) where the stellar environment inspires him to play to that exalted standard.

****This is a revision to accompany my upgrade to 4 stars. This is still not profound music, but infectious it is, absolutely, and the CD keeps ending up in my player. Better than I first thought.

Russ Barenberg is a guitar god!.......2002-10-27

I've been Russ Barenberg fan since his work on Skip, Hop, and Wobble. There is a clean openess to his playing on all he does, from almost roots Bluegrass to more contemporary modes. This is GREAT driving music, specifically away from major urban centers. Sometimes I become afraid that it almost borders on easy listening, but since there are no wind instruments and the bluegrass is always there, there are no problems. It is bluegrass, but cleaner, perhaps a little less gutsy but no less passionate. It avoids the hummingbird and ballad quality that can become a little (just a little) tiring in traditional bluegrass.
If you are looking for music that sings without words, look for anything using Russ Barenberg.

With Moving Pictures, Rush's complex songwriting and musical virtuosity reached new heights. It's that rarest of creatures, a highly listenable progressive-rock album; even the all-instrumental "YYZ" is of interest to listeners besides musicians. IN TERMS OF RUSH ALBUMS THIS IS THEM AT THEIR PRIME. A NON STOP ROCKER!!
I FIND MYSELF WISHING THEY HAD PUT 10 SONGS ON HERE INSTEAD OF 7. BECAUSE IT'S OVER AND YOU STILL WANT MORE. EVERY CUT GIVES 100% OF THE RUSH EXPERIANCE. THEIR NEXT BEST ALBUM IS "2112". BUT THIS ONE IS HEAD OF THE CLASS.

What a rush.......2007-07-24

I vacillated on this one, between 4 and 5 stars. I went with 4 because the album just kind of falters some in the second half. The first half is spectacular: Tom Sawyer, Limelight and Red Barchetta are all awesome. The Carmera Eye is good but too long. The final tracks on teh CD are solid, but not up to the mark of the others. Overall, the CD has a lot of punch for an album with compartively few tracks [tho it does log in at 40 minutes as a whole]. Strong 4 stars, almost got to 5.

The Greatest Rush Ever Made!!!!.......2007-06-13

Moving Pictures is both one of my favorite albums of all time and one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Perfect in every aspect. This is Rush unleashed! After the near perfection of previous efforts like Hemispheres and Farewell To Kings and Permanent Waves, Rush came together and created their masterpiece. I could listen to it a million times and still never get tired of the prog-rock trio's best effort.


Tom Sawyer - Hands down one of the coolest songs ever! Here the boys from Toronto show that not only are they excellent musicians, but they can write a song with hooks from hell. Memorable and classic. I love this tune.

Red Barchetta - My Uncle has a country place that no one knows about... Another classic Rush tune. Written in the 1984-esque future-gone-wrong perspective with an idea garnered from a cool sci-fi story. This about a boy and his car and the fact that driving has become illegal. Great stuff.

YYZ - One of the most killer instrumental tunes ever recorded. This song rox! Geddy, Alex & Neil in complete show-off jam mode. Solid.

Limelight - Another of my personal favorites. A song about the other side of fame & fortune. From the opening riff, this song rocks! All the world's indeed a stage and we are merely players! Excellent!

The Camera Eye - If Moving Pictures is said to have a soft spot, Camera Eye would be it, although I happen to love this song. Clocking just over eleven minutes, this is a sprawling, moody tune along the lines of Xanadu or Natural Science. A sleeper, but still strong.

Witch Hunt - I have so many favorites on this album, and Witch Hunt is another. Written about prejudice and mob mentality, Witch Hunt is part three of the 'Fear Trilogy' (The Enemy Within & The Weapon being the other two parts) that they performed live for a long time. Killer tune. Those who know what's best for us should rise and save us from ourselves....

Vital Signs - Great ending song to a magnificent album. Short and sweet and too the point. Neil's lyrics flow on their own. Everybody's got to deviate from the norm.


Overall, Rush went into the studio and came up big with Moving Pictures. This is the culmination of their earlier years solidified into something both powerful and perfect. There will never be another Rush album like Moving Pictures. This is the peak. Great songs will follow but there will never be that cohession that this album brings. Great album to start with if you are just getting acquainted with Rush. An old favorite for those of us who have been following them forever.

While Rush has so many great albums this one is in my top three.
A classic cd from the 80's with such melodic songs as Red Barchetta and
Witch Hunt. Plus the two mega hits we all love. If you are wanting to forget your worries, put this in your cd player and sit back.

OK folks, I don't want to sound over the top here but only one album can be the "best ever" and this is it for me. Every track is outstanding.

This came out in my freshman year of HS but since I had no older siblings it generally passed me by until Signals came out. I picked it up, went to the New World Man tour where they played every song from 'Moving Pictures' except for 'Witch Hunt' and hence... I found my favorite band. As soon as I had the money I went to the store and bought up every Rush album including 'Moving Pictures'.

At that time a new technology was being developed -- the Compact Disc. 'Moving Pictures' was one of a handful of albums chosen for this new experimental technology and they could not have chosen a better set of songs for this experiment. If I remember correctly the CD cost about $20 which was about 3 times the cost of vinyl. It was well worth the cost.
