With her debut album appearing at the age of 28, Martha Wainwright has lived in a musical world since she was born. She posses a voice with timbres similar to her brother, Rufus, and to her mother and aunt, Kate & Anna McGarrigle. She also has a way of stretching syllables out for reasons at once musical and textual, very much like her father, Loudon Wainwright, from whom she's also inherited a bold autobiographical stance, albeit couched in her own particular poetics. A bracing confidence informs these thirteen songs, from the bright shiny pop of "G.P.T." and "The Maker" (with the unmistakable voice of Rufus on backup vocals) to the fragile balladry of "Whither Must I Wander." Martha Wainwright continues the family tradition of audacious debuts. -- David Greenberger

Product Description
Martha Wainwright comes from a family that some would call "musical royalty." She is the daughter of Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, and sister of Rufus Wainwright, yet she writes and sings with a style completely her own. After several tours as opener and band-mate for Rufus Wainwright, and appearances on albums by Rufus, the McGarrigles, Gordon Gano (Violent Femmes) and Linda Thompson, Martha made her own bold statement with the release of her EP BMFA earlier this year. The EP garnered rave reviews: The London Times called it a "tour de force" while The New York Times named it "a gorgeous teaser" to her forthcoming full-length debut. The release of that self-titled debut album takes things to a whole new level. An album of contrasts, Martha Wainwright features tracks filled with raw, fiery, passionate energy alongside unforgettable, hauntingly beautiful ballads.

Maybe I'm just inclined to enjoy Martha (I'm a huge fan of her family, especially Rufus), but I think her voice is really strong and unique. Her songwriting ability on the other hand... well, let's just say that I never realize how important lyrics are to me until I find an artist who writes silly, rambling ones. Oh well, the sound quality is great, Martha's voice is a joy to listen to, and as long and you don't think too much about what she's actually saying it's quite enjoyable. Standout tracks are the heartfelt B.M.F.A., Whither Must I wander, and Who was I kidding? These songs have simpler instrumentals and less cheesy backup vocalizing, showcasing Martha's voice to its best advantage. All in all it's a somewhat mixed bag, but worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Martha Wainwright.......2006-12-09

Martha Wainwright~ Martha Wainwright is a very pleasant surprise indeed. I borrowed this album from my local library and to be honest I had never heard of this singer/musician before. Ms Wainwright is an accomplished vocalist and a very good lyricist. However, her lyrics can become a bit meandering at times and she seems to happy singing about subjects that just go on and on. At times I have really no idea what she is singing about at all but it sure sounds beautiful. The production value on this album is outstanding and the sound is crisp. The book-let is a mixed bag and the photo on the cover is terrible and looks like it has been taken by some high-school kid or shot with a cheap instant camera. The font is easy on the eye and the lyrics are therefore easy to read. This is a very good album that could use text editing but apart from this I give it four out five stars.

5 out of 5 stars you're across town, don't even have a clue.......2006-11-24

if only this voice were a magic carpet! after having said that, i think i should rephrase. martha wainwright's music IS a magic carpet, and it'll sweep you up, whether you be in your pajamas or out driving to pick up milk under the new moon, and it'll keep you surprisingly safe, while revealing this uncommon and uncensored power, exposing her raw human condition via a seriously different beat. it feels old and wise but also as new as birth itself. the unpredictable and shattered liftings and fallings of her voice will work their way in and before you know it, your state of heart and mind will be altered in a much needed way. i found my way to martha wainwright's music after seeing her stunning performance of The Traitor in the film Leonard Cohen, I'm your Man. You've likely aleady seen it but if not, you'll wanna. I think Martha should prepare herself for her own carpet ride as she is not going to remain our precious secret for long. I been clued in, you've obviously been clued in, and off she goes. And might i add, real music lovers are plentiful out here and we don't need to be catered to with easily packaged songs. We are progressive people searching high and low for unprecedented passion to move us out here in the world, so do your thing Martha and whatever time you want to come for you will soon be underfoot, if it's not already. !!!Can't wait to see a live show!!!

5 out of 5 stars The power and the beauty -incredible passion here.......2005-12-15

Oh that there were more EPs in the world, especially of this quality. Following in the wake of what I consider the finest album of 2005, I Will Internalize collects scattered tracks into a half-album of virtual perfection. In terms of piercing vocals, tight songwriting,an incredible sense of meter and phrase, dead-on production, raw emotion and just flat-out guts, Martha Wainwright is the most surefooted singer-songwriter since Dylan himself. "Baby" just leaps out of the speakers, the French song aches and soars, the duet with Rufus a stunner, and the title track so utterly, totally wrenching I can almost hardly stand it ("whispering whispering whispering whispering please" ) This is the real deal, and it'll break your heart a hundred times over and patch it up a hundred and one. Absolutely wondrous music.

Martha Wainwright bears the unmistakable stamp of her lineage. She and her brother Rufus grew up in Canada with their mother, Kate McGarrigle, with summer and holiday visits to father Loudon Wainwright III in the states. She's sung regularly in performances of the extended McGarrigle family, as well as with her brother since his ascendancy in this new millennium. Stepping out fully on her own, she's thrown down a knowing gauntlet, the title track being also listed as just "BMFA." From that near-solo opener to the judiciously arranged small combo setting for "When The Day Is Short" and the sonic wallop of "It's Over," she's not pulling any mere raucous stunts here. Rather, these five songs show a maturity that comes from someone who's been preparing for her first release her whole life. - David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars A Cassandra for the New Century.......2007-06-09

A seer in her poetry. Saw her live; quite a songstress as well. Have to say, Martha is the best of the Wainwrights and the McGarrigles...

5 out of 5 stars A real artist to watch........2005-02-23

I saw her live a few months ago, in 2004. Absolutely riveting! Original and personal, authentic and not commercially oriented, strong and intense. This CD lets you in. Wait for the rest.

2 out of 5 stars Caterwauling Cat Screeching.......2005-02-16

With the rock pedigree of father Loudon Wainwright III, mother Kate McGarrigle and brother Rufus Wainwright, her voice sounds a bit like her aunt Sloan Wainwright's full throated-alto. The stripped down arrangements here put her voice front & center. It is a moving vocal delivery, but unfortunately the title track is unnecessarily offensive with its language. In short, this EP is a mistake as a calling card for an upcoming full-length release. I can only hope that the original tracks heard here will not be heard again. "I Will Internalize" is somber and boring. "When the Day is Short" is a peppy track without much of a melody, "On the jukebox is your only song." "It's over before it ever started" is pretty much a targeted assessment of this EP's worth. The track itself sounds like a caterwauling cat screeching, perhaps suitable for a song about slitting your wrists; but do I need to listen to this more than once? "How Soon" -- the only song Martha didn't write -- is the best track, but its wispy piano melody is hardly enough to recommend the set. Martha was charming on the McGarrigle Hour and did a wonderful job with "I'll Be Seeing You" from "The Aviator: Songs from the Movie" CD. However, this set is an utter mistake. She needs some management to help her find her talent that certainly seems to be there. Until next time, taxi!

3 out of 5 stars title of review.......2005-01-28

I expected something at least somewhat unconventional and interesting based on the title, but the title track is just standard, mediocre lilith fair stuff. I really don't get what she was thinking with the offensive title. Anyone conventionally-minded enough to like the music would be offended by the title, and anyone who found the title amusing or interesting would be offended by the boring conventional music. Track 2 is more of the same. Track 3 has a more developed sound with slide guitar and better songwriting. Track 4 has a slight noisy goth vibe, and she uses her voice more effectively as an instrument, although her enounciation is terrible and it's near impossible to make out a word she sings. The last song reminds me of Billie Holiday. It's completely unoriginal and weak, but apparently it's a cover so I guess that shouldn't count against her. Here's hoping her forthcoming album has more songs like tracks 3 and 4 and less like tracks 1 and 2.

5 out of 5 stars a joy to behold.......2005-01-26

Martha has a gorgeous voice and wonderful stories to share. These tracks were among the best I heard last year and display how she has really come into her own as a solo artist. The production is raw and muted and does much to enhance the sheer emotionality of Wainwright's songs.

Martha Wainwright's utter uniqueness makes it feel like a cheat to mention her pedigree as the daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle and the sister of Rufus. In that uniqueness, though, the singer-songwriter earns her place in a family of standouts. This six-song debut EP melds folk, rock, and traditional pop flavorings into a statement of one woman's romantic, yet clear-eyed, worldview. Wainwright's remarkably pure pipes and emotionally spot-on delivery perhaps shine best on the bedroom-voiced opener, "Lolita," but she also makes the dreamily yearning "You've Got a Way" into a tour de force. --Rickey Wright

Album Description

The debut release from Martha Wainwright. This six song, self-titled, EP is a selection of tracks Martha has recorded over the last four years. Meshing her acute familiarity with the folk/rock tradition and a youthful sense of adventure, she sings dramatic ballads, flushed with character, bringing a solid musical strength to her highly original songs with a voice that can break your heart. This is just a taste of what is to come from this talented young artist.

5 out of 5 stars I'd give six, seven, or eight stars if I could..........2005-02-08

Disregard the negative criticisms here, folks. I've seen Martha perform live on many occasions (even with Rufus) and I jump at any opportunity to see her perform. Her music is lovely, wispy, ethereal, very hard to pin down. You can't rightfully compare her to her dad, mom, or Rufus. She stands alone, and her music is extremely powerful. MARTHA ROX! GET THIS DISC!

5 out of 5 stars Martha is awesome!.......2004-06-10

I love Martha Wainwright! I can't wait for her to finally release her official debut cd.

2 out of 5 stars I agree with the girl from Ohio..........2004-03-12

I too, saw her perform with her TRULY talented brother, Rufus and I was thinking the same thing---Somebody PLEASE turn her microphone down!!!--This album is okay because of studio perks. Songwriting is not bad either- the potential for songwriting alone could be better than a lot of Tori Amos. But she is nowhere near the same league as Rufus. Her voice is average.

3 out of 5 stars Promising talent........2004-03-07

In my opinion, Martha's best work so far she has done with her mother and aunts, participating in the four-part harmonies. And the duets she has done with her father are exceptional. She'll get there. It was wise to have released only this limited collection. A full-scale album would have had to include much mediocrity, I'm afraid. She's not ready, but one day she will be. One negative reviewer above suggested she is trading on her name alone; that she isn't talented. I am convinced that is the case with her brother Rufus--would he get bookings and a contract otherwise? I highly doubt it. Martha, on the other hand, has real talent. If she is taking advantage, it is the advantage of being schooled by the genius of her mother and dad. She's got talent, but even genius alone is no guarantee; judgment, too, is required. Her mother put out the atrocious "Love Over And Over." Yikes! Her father did "Therapy." Yuck! Martha will, no doubt, make similar mistakes, but she has the advantage of having seen mom and dad stumble, and triumph. I, for one, look forward to hearing Martha's career unfold. For now, listen to her contributions on "La Vache Qui Pleure." Great stuff!

1 out of 5 stars Are we talking about the same person?.......2003-03-02

I am surprised to see so many positive reviews of Martha's live singing. The album itself is okay. But people - Have you heard her sing live without benefit of studio production to keep her sounding in tune? I am a huge Rufus fan, and the first time I heard him in concert I thought, "Who is that woman screeching on backup vocals?" She stands back there and howls with apparently no idea that backup singers are not supposed to be louder than the main vocals. And when she does the solo numbers - Please! So many people have described her voice as "unique." It seems that "unique" is a euphemism for loud and unapologetically out of tune. I know this won't be a popular review, but I couldn't let all those starry-eyed optimists go on saying she is an incredible artist when all she seems to be doing is hanging on to her famous familys' coattails.

3 out of 5 stars not a bad compilation.......2006-06-25

Although this cd is by no means the Ultimate Summer Playlist it proclaims itself to be, it stands up well under repeated plays. There are 15 songs here compiled by Napster and they cover the spectrum from Mammas & Papas to The Faling Lips. I ripped almost half of the songs to my MP3 player. If you are into edgy music you could probably add another star. I did love that the cd, when played on your computer, links you up to Napster.com.uk and provides a code for a free 30-day trial. Overall, I have no complaints but it isn't part of my favorites cd collection.
