Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk
Stoke's favorite son's sixth studio album marks a new stage in the career of Mr. Robert Peter Williams, Britain's favourite popular entertainer. Severed from his former right-hand man, songwriter Guy Chambers, Intensive Care sees him forging a new partnership with former Lilac Time stalwart Stephen Duffy. The result is his most complete album to date, free from the gimmicky fillers--like "Me and My Monkey" and "Jesus In A Camper Van"--that tended to drag previous efforts down. Never short of cocksure bravado, Robbie starts proceedings off with a modest declaration--"Here I stand victorious, the only man who made you come," but for once he's got the tunes to back up the posturing. There are plenty of classic Robbie tracks, from the ballad-tastic "Advertising Space"--which should see "Angels" relegated to the backbenches--to the public confessional of "The Trouble With Me"; plus some daring departures in between, from the '80s pop fun of "Sin Sin Sin" to the Rolling Stones-like "A Place to Crash", via the Oasis-lite of "Make Me Pure" and the Smiths-esque guitars on "Your Gay Friend." You can't help but feel that Mr. Williams has a point to make with this album, to all the people who said he'd be nothing without Guy Chambers; if that is the case, he couldn't have gone about it a better way than by serving up the best album of his career to date. --Melanie Wilkin

4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2007-05-14

I am not that big of a fan of his but I really enjoy his music. His greatest hits are the best. Being in the states now you have to buy his CDs to hear his music. If I were still in Germany I might wait for the second greatest hits.

5 out of 5 stars One of Robbie's Best.......2007-01-04

I liked this CD from the very start. Some (like Rudebox) have to grow on you - this one was an instant hit with me. Like most of the tunes; of course tripping is a favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Most People are Missing Out!!!.......2006-10-03

Listening to this album started off as a direct comparison to Escapology which is a mistake. This album is a lot more sophisticated than some of Robbie's previous works, but it is still excellent album. I have to admit that the first time I listened to Intensive Care, I was less than happy, but it has actually grown into one of my favorite albums. His lyrics never disappoint in their witty and creative nature. I highly recommend this album and if at first you don't like....don't give up.

4 out of 5 stars An ambitious, winning return.......2006-08-21

Even among those that don't consider themselves fans, you can usually still find a grudging acceptance of the fact that Robbie Williams is a remarkably gifted entertainer. Press these same folks further, however, and you'd probably find very few that would consider his songwriting output to be of any great worth. True, he does have the proven ability to pump out huge, lighter-waving hits like `Angels' or `Better Man', but generally, his music is perceived as being a bit half-hearted, a bit phoned-in, a bit meat and potatoes. For the last 10 years this has been my line of thinking too. OK, admittedly I'm quite partial to `Lazy Days' and `No Regrets' - but other than that - the music of Robbie Williams occupies very little of my headspace. So honestly, I'm as surprised as anyone to have discovered that the latest Robbie Williams album is actually really, really, tremendously good.

Traditionally, Williams isn't really seen as an `album artist' but he's gone a long way to disproving that theory here. On Intensive Care he sounds invigorated and purposeful - a man with something to say and plenty to prove. There's a sense of urgency to this new material that wasn't really present in earlier albums. Choruses soar, hooks surprise, and melodies beguile, and paired together with Williams' witty, knowing lyrics, we have the genuine recipe for a very good pop album indeed. First play through, Intensive Care sounded promising, second play through I was really beginning to feel it, third play through - I was totally sold.

To be sure, the best thrills reside in the first half of Intensive Care, with one good song after another, culminating in the absolutely glorious ballad `Advertising Space'. Tracks 1 through 6, it must be said, are the very definition of perfect-pop. But there is still plenty of quality left over for the second half. Most notably on `The Trouble With Me' and the lovely, understated album closer `King Of Bloke And Bird'. Occasionally in the latter half Williams does revert back to more piffling fare like `Your Gay Friend' or `A Place To Crash', but even these songs aren't entirely without their charms - with the former even displaying some nice Johnny Marr-style guitar licks.

Poor Robbie has suffered a fair amount of backlash over the years. Certainly, he hasn't always helped his own cause at times. But to his credit, Williams has soldiered on, and with the help of new songwriting partner Stephen Duffy, he's turned in an album full of beauty, conviction and hard-won experience.

5 out of 5 stars Robbie Williams.......2006-07-03

Loved the CD. Robbie Williams is still making great music with interesting lyrics as well fun easy to listen to pop.

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT Mini-Documentary.......2006-02-14

You can see my review of the album itself on the music-only pages for Intensive Care elsewhere on Amazon...I will not review it here. My review here is of the supplementary DVD.

Robbie and I are the same age. That doesn't mean anything other than the fact that he and I have the same number of years behind us and about the same amount of time upon which we can reflect. Other than that, he and I may not have much in common...concretely, anyway.

A lot of these supplementary DVDs are scripted or boring or otherwise generally useless. When I see these DVDs, I want to see a *real person.* If this DVD demonstrates anything like what Robbie Williams is like "in real life," I can say this:

I could be sitting around my living room, drinking beer with friends, and Robbie Williams could walk in the room, pull up a chair, grab a pint, and fit in like we'd known him since we were born.

In this DVD, Robbie is brilliant. He is very funny, very loose, very intelligent, and very talented. The off-the-cuff interview segments show a lot of honesty, humility, and humor. The shots in various studios demonstrate some very talented artists doing what they do best and, for the most part, having a hell of a lot of fun doing it.

The mini-documentary provides a whirlwind tour of about half of the songs on Intensive Care. For selected songs from the album, Robbie gives a brief background to the song mixed among shots taken during various stages of recording. The interview session shows a very relaxed Robbie sitting in what appears to be his living room in his California home. Very informal...seemingly unrehearsed...very candid...very charming.

You also seem to get a really good feel for how well Robbie and Stephen worked together for this album. Stephen is in the vast majority of the shots, and you can see that the two have a great deal of respect for each other. They go back and forth a lot in the footage...it's just fun to watch their interaction.

What really hooked me is the honesty that Robbie (and everyone else in the footage, for that matter) exuded. Not a lot of public figures are willing to share that much with an audience. You feel, though, after watching the footage, that you got the "real" Robbie...not a dramatization or a manufactured product, but the real thing.

Some technical details: the DVD gives you a choice of 5.1 Surround Sound or Stereo sound at the onset. The video is provided in letterbox format, providing a really nice, rich picture. The DVD is in PAL format, so viewers in the North America and Japan will need a compatible player and display or will need to watch it on their computers.

At the end of the DVD, Robbie says, "Does this mean that I've come around to liking Robbie Williams? Yeah, I have, actually." Me, too, Robbie...me, too.

Robbie has proved again that he can write and sing great songs. I love this album and most of the songs are indeed very nice to listen to... Get one or u missed out what Robbie has to offer in this album... Highly recommended as it also comes with DVD (where he explains about the songs in the album) and lastly but not the least, the album cover has fantastic photos of Robbie. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Find a place to crash.......2006-05-12

It is a sin not to own this album!
Intensive Care includes 12 top-songs: Music, language, humor and his voice - everything is on a very high level!
The best songs on this album are: Ghosts, Make Me Pure, Advertising Space, Your Gay Friend, Sin Sin Sin, A Place To Crash and King Of Bloke And Bird. Yes, this album includes seven songs, which are just perfect. Can you name another artist who has an album (except his/her Greatest Hits) where you find 7 very good songs out of twelve? No, you cannot!
When you buy this album you get just everything - from slow ballads to fast pop songs.
This album is a little bit softer than his last album "Escapology", which is also very good.
The booklet is just amazing! The "tarot cards" are full of contradictions.
So AMERICA, it's up to you: Either you buy this record and all of Rob's other records or you will be know as the most f***ing nation all over the world.
This is an order: Move your boney ass, go and buy this CD and love him like he's cash! ;)

4 out of 5 stars Where has most of the arrogance gone?.......2006-02-15

I've been a diehard fan of the Robster since his first American release, and I still cannot understand why American radio stations will not play his tunes. This CD is very pleasant to listen to.You'll dance to the infectious TRIPPIN' and romance to SPREAD YOUR WINGS & ADVERTISING SPACE.Still, you will find GAY FRIEND and SIN,SIN,SIN somewhat lame yet not tarnishing the whole message of this work.I don't know if I appreciate or miss the lack of cockiness and arrogance. Is America ready?

5 out of 5 stars Robbie's Hooked a New Fan in the US.......2006-02-08

(repeated from my review of the [Explicit Lyrics] [Import] version of the album)

I should share some background before giving my review.

Before this past summer, I knew Robbie only through his one and only US hit, "Millennium," from 1999. I always had hoped to hear more music from him, but that never happened here.

Flash forward to this past summer. I, like many millions of other people around the world, watched the Live 8 concerts this summer on-demand via the web. In the home stretch of the London concert, who appears on stage but Robbie Williams. Knowing next to nothing about him at that time (he, unfortunately, is very much an obscurity here, as many have noted and rightfully pined) I was absolutely FLOORED not only by his talent as an artist but also by his absolutely amazing skills as a performer. There very much is a distinction between the two skills...I have seen many talented artists who are mediocre or downright awful entertainers. Robbie, in the short 20 minutes that he was on stage, demonstrated an incredible talent to take a crowd of several hundred thousand people and wrap every single one of them around his finger. Talent like this on stage is a one-in-a-million kind of thing, and I can compare him to but a few acts who, in their own right and in their own times, were legends on stage. It absolutely blew me away, and I replayed that portion of the concert probably 100 times over the summer.

I got wind that Robbie released a new album and I was hell-bent on getting a copy of it, never before hearing any of his material off of an album. I ordered this album, it arrived last week, and I have had a steady diet of Robbie since it arrived to give me a chance to appreciate this work fully. After many hours of absorbing this album, I came to a conclusion:

This album is excellent.

"Ghosts" is a great song. While others have said that this song may supercede "Angels" as the audience-favorite anthem, I do not agree...but it is a great song nonetheless. "Tripping" is his first single from the album, and it is a pretty strong song. My favorites may be the songs which are extremely funny to me: "Your Gay Friend" and "A Place to Crash." I mean, really...how can you not love songs whose choruses begin

"And I'll be your gay friend / 'cuz your marriage never ends"

and

"Find a place to crash / Move your boney ass"

The remainder of the songs, too, are quite good. There are a couple of slower songs to match the up-tempo songs, but there are no "true ballads" on this album. I have to spend some more time with this album to gain a better appreciation of a couple of the songs (I'm not placing all of the references), but on the whole it is an excellent album from a truly gifted artist.

"Greatest Hits" are on their way...can't wait.

Robbie, brother...you hooked another one here in the US.

"First they ignore you
Then laugh at you and hate you
Then they fight you - then you win"

2 out of 5 stars I think robbie williams is SICK!.......2005-12-23

I think robbie williams is sick and I HATE his new album.
I DO NOT like the songs. I think it is silly if the album is over £7!

Ron Young's haunting and powerful c.d. is magical. His voice is reminiscent of Harry Chapin's and reaches to the core of our being. At times he is in pain - a man searching for answers. At other times he is the seer, challenging us to open our eyes and hearts. The artist cries at injustice, dances in love, marvels at the universe, and inspires us to embrace life. Ron Young pours emotion into his music and lyrics, sending our souls soaring. "Intensive Care" reveals a beautiful spirit and a talented songwriter.
