"The rhythm is gonna get you" is the tag line of one of Gloria Estefan's biggest hits, but it could also serve as the mantra for the Cuban-born singer's road to the top of the charts. Estefan's forte is middle-of-the-road pop, but all of her upbeat hits are fueled by driving Latin percussion, the feature that set Estefan's music apart from the rest of the flyaway pop of the 1980s and early '90s. Greatest Hits intersperses those great dance hits--"Conga," "1,2,3," "Get on Your Feet," and, of course, "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You," with sweet ballads such as "Words Get in the Way," "Anything for You," and "Don't Wanna Lose You." This set also includes "Coming Out of the Dark," Estefan's triumphant comeback hit following her 1990 career-threatening tour-bus accident. --Daniel Durchholz

This cd has some fantastic songs on it. It truly shows the wide array of hits she has accumulated over the years. There are the fun latin inspired boppy songs, and there are the ballads she is well known for too. I love both and that's what makes this a great cd - the fact that there is a good mix.
One of her best songs ever (in my mind) is When I See You Smile. That's a stunning ballad and it's my favourite of hers. There is also Anything For You and Words Get In The Way. For faster songs, there is the cool Rythm Is Gonna Get You and Go Away. It's very hard to pick what song I like more when she has so many. This is just a few of her best and she's probably overdue to have another cd like this released because she has done some more excellent cds lately (underrated ones) and her catalogue is always expanding. I love this cd and still listen to it often.

Although she's been doing Latin pop since Jennifer Lopez was in junior high, Gloria Estefan has progressed little, as evidenced from the derivative dance and disco retreads on Greatest Hits Vol. II. Apart from a few true gems like "Reach" and "Heaven's What I Feel," the album is a boring mix of covers ("Turn the Beat Around" and "Everlasting Love") and original tracks that blend into one another--all Cuban rhythm and banal lost-love lyrics. Gloria has a one-of-a-kind voice and great style--she's a surefire talent--and her music is still fabulous in her native language (check out Mi Tierra or Abriendo Puertas). But if you're looking for a real sampler of her greatest hits, the first volume, released in 1992, is still the way to go. --Courtney KempCustomer Reviews:

The Music Changes, the Quality Remains.......2005-10-16
There are some wonderful songs here, however, and to dismiss it simply because of its variety would be ridiculous. Three new songs were recorded by Gloria as bonus tracks, so you definitely will not get cheated on this one. The flow of this second collection lies in the high quality production given these hits. The same care given Gloria's more artistic Spanish efforts such as "Mi Tierra" and "Alma Caribena" can be found here, each song framed by Emilio's attention to detail. The musical quality of this collection is its flow.
1) Turn the Beat Around (Classic Mix) -- This is Gloria's 'cover' of Vicki Sue Robinson's disco classic. She was seven months pregnant with her daughter Emily when she recorded this song high atop the Miami skyline. A lively and fun blast from the past.
2) Everlasting Love -- Taken from Gloria's album of 'covers' for songs she grew up with, this is a few smoothly produced minutes of pure nostalgia. It will leave you feeling good, and just a little wistful.
3) Reach -- While Diane Warren was helping write Gloria's "Destiny" album, she came up with the title for this song Gloria had been asked to write for the 1996 Summer Olympics. According to Gloria's comments in the liner notes, twenty minutes later she and Warren had wriiten this inspirational and poignant song everyone will remember from the closing ceremonies.
4) If We Were Lovers -- The Spanish version, which is lyrically different than the English version here, was a worldwide hit. The same beautiful melody surrounds this very romantic song of a heart waiting and longing for the moment that love is returned. The quietly exotic feel of this song harks back to the 1940's in flavor and is just amazing. A great song for wine and soft lighting, with someone you love.
5) You'll Be Mine (Party Time-Single Mix) -- No one does this kind of song better than Gloria and Emilio Estefan. A great production turns this dance club party song into glittering images of Miami nightlife. Listening to this song is like watching that opening salvo of images from Miami Vice. This is pink flamingos, sandy beaches, and long-legged girls in short skirts stepping out of hot cars at posh dance clubs.
6) Heaven's What I Feel -- It may be what you feel when listening to this great pop song, perfect for a summer afternoon. It was originally written for Celine Dion, who decided not to include it on the album she was doing. It's hard to imagine it being done any better that Gloria does it here.
7) I'm Not Givin' You Up -- Gloria calls this her 'love at any cost' song and since an uptempo version had not been available as a single, she put the dance mix here. Though faster in tempo than the beautiful slower verion, it loses none of its anguish or melancholy due to Gloria's emotional delivery of the lovely lyrics.
8) Music of My Heart -- This duet with N' Sync from the Meryl Streep film in which Gloria had a role could easily have turned into another forgettable pop tune, but instead is a beautiful and inspirational song conjuring up images of the film it came from.
9) Oye --This is the next best thing to being at an open air Cuban club on a warm summer night. If you've seen the sexy video for this song you'll know why it earned the 'Dance Club Video of 1998 award.
10) You Can't Walk Away From Love -- A very pretty and passionate song better than the film it was written for. The lyrics are emotionally naked and Gloria's vocal delivery of them honest and rich. This song will grow on you.
11) Out of Nowhere -- A terrific and sexy song that feels like Miami as the sun goes down. A joyful song with a fast beat of love found unexpectedly. Sort of a companion to "Everlasting Love."
12) I Got No Love -- The title may tell all, but it doesn't prepare you for the unusually spare and funky rhythm that has a circular feel, turning something simple, into something special.
13) Y-Tu-Conga -- This remix is really nice. Light Latin rhythms surround Gloria's voice, making this 15 year old classic fresh and vibrant. Produced by Gloria's son, this one was special to her, and it shows. After several listenings, this has become my favorite version of this Gloria Estefan staple. African and Cuban rhythms are fused into a fantastic mix of island ambiance. This is bongos and palm trees and drinks with little umbrellas. Wonderful.
There is an emotional honesty in Gloria Estefan's vocals that is missing among the new wave of pop stars. Talent and range are not the same thing as honesty and integrity. There is a reason Gloria Estefan has such a special relationship with her fans and has managed to have such staying power in an industry where a new pop princess comes along every five minutes. That reason can be heard here on this second collection of greatest hits.
The lovely photograph that graces the cover of Gloria's second collection of hits was shot by Alberto Tolot. In the center page of the liner notes, there are 18 thumbnail size photos from covers and videos, some which I had not seen before purchasing this. All of them are very nice, and one more reason Gloria's fans will want to pick this one up.
it's ok - but thin.......2005-09-07
gloria's classic tracks are all those '80s faves - dr beat, rhythm is gonna... all on her first gr8est hits. this one has nothing much on it, the songs are good enough, but the album material overall just doesn't seem to add up to much value somehow. saying that, her album tracks generally i love.
I think the best of gloria since the '80s is all in her cuban music, that is brilliant, tracks like mi voy, mas allas, regress a mi, la pretendo, renacer, si voy a perdete, la paranda, etc, to me, that is true-gloria.

The Reason We Listen to Radio.......2005-10-09
There was always an emotional honesty in Gloria Estefan's vocals that is missing among the new wave of pop stars. Talent and range are not the same thing as honesty and integrity. There is a reason Gloria Estefan has such a special relationship with her fans and has managed to have such staying power in an industry where a new pop princess comes along every five minutes. You can hear that reason even in some of the earlier radio hits. That honesty reached its zenith on Gloria's final selection here, "Always Tomorrow."
THE HAPPY DANCE SONGS
CONGA -- 1, 2, 3 -- RHYTHM IS GONNA GET YOU -- GET ON YOUR FEET -- GO AWAY
These songs truly capture the feel of Miami at night, their fun mix of Cuban rhythms infectious. No one has ever done this kind of song better than Gloria Estefan. Emilio Estefan's attention to every detail in the production of each song turn these dance club party songs into glittering images of pink flamingos, sandy beaches, and exotic cars. Listening to these songs is like watching the now famous opening salvo of images from Miami Vice. These wonderful songs we all remember are the next best thing to being at an open air Cuban club on a warm Miami night during summer.
THE HEARTFELT SONGS OF LOVE
WORDS GET IN THE WAY -- CAN'T STAY AWAY FROM YOU -- ANYTHING FOR YOU -- HERE WE ARE -- DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU -- I SEE YOUR SMILE
These beautiful ballads are no less special simply because they found their way to radio and were big hits. Sometimes there is a reason songs are popular with everyone. No one ever gave a song more emotional honesty than Gloria does. Each selection here, whether it is of love lost, love clinging to survival, or love remembered, has a touching truth in its lyrics and the manner in which Gloria Estefan delivers them.
"Don't Wanna Lose You" and the very sad and wistful "I See Your Smile" are of particular note, lingering in our hearts long after the song has ended. The beautiful "Words Get In the Way" is like an anthem for anyone who has ever loved someone so. Gloria would record a live version of this song in Miami and donate all the proceeds of that beautiful and special mix only available on the single for South Florida victims of Hurricane Andrew.
SPECIAL SONGS
CHRISTMAS THROUGH YOUR EYES -- COMING OUT OF THE DARK -- ALWAYS TOMORROW
"Christmas Through Your Eyes" has a wonderful and nostalgic feel; Gloria sings about the innocence and optimism we had as kids that we would love to feel once again. It is a very pretty song that will have you thinking about how you once felt also, back when everyone seemed kind.
"Coming Out of the Dark" and "Always Tomorrow" are inspirational songs born of a near tragedy when Gloria was injured in an accident and broke her back. She could easily have lost her life, and it would be many months before she would be her old self, both physically and emotionally.
"Always Tomorrow" is especially poignant. No one can listen to this song and not think about the life they have, and wonder if they are spending enough time enjoying it. Gloria's discovery that it could end at any moment and her reaction to it is truly heartrending. It is deeply felt and inspirational, and quite appropriately, concludes this most fantastic collection of music, which covered not only many years of our lives, but the emotions we felt along the journey.
The liner notes, in addition to containing the lyrics to all the songs, have some wonderful pictures of Gloria. The cover was shot by photographer Alberto Tolot at The Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. The photographs inside were taken by Antoine Verglas at The Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida.
IN SUMMATION
The music is great, the production smooth, and Gloria's emotional vocals always perfect. She always made this look so easy that she sometimes didn't get credit for how difficult creating good pop music can be. Husband Emilio, a terrific artist in his own right, always manages to give just the right production to a tune, enhancing the flavor of a song while not overpowering Gloria's emotional delivery.
These hits are the perfect blend of popularity and artistry. In turns uplifting, exciting, and heartbreaking, "Gloria Estefan: Greatest Hits" reminds us what was good about listening to radio during the 1980's and early 1990's. This was the culmination of Gloria's dream. We can be glad that the dream continued, Gloria taking her music in different directions as radio changed. She found other venues, such as the Olympics and films to augment the occasional dance club favorite. And her Spanish music shows her growth over the years as an artist.
There would be a second "Greatest Hits" collection, thanks to those different directions Gloria's music would take, but anyone wanting to know just what is so special about her, and why she has lasted so long, must have this first one. This edition, even has a couple of bonus tracks: "Dr. Beat" and the fun "Bad Boy" remix. It is, for want of a better phrase, the music of our lives.
