Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.ca
For years, Daniel Lanois has been producing lush soundscapes for his own projects as well as those he's produced. From U2's The Unforgettable Fire to Emmylou Harris's Wrecking Ball, Lanois's distinct floating-in-the-clouds sound is instantly recognizable to even the most casual listener. Direct comparisons to master producer Brian Eno are not just obvious, they are inevitable; Lanois admits to being Eno's apprentice through the ambient master's instrumental projects in the '80s and '90s. After making a few singer/songwriter discs, Lanois says he decided to go fully instrumental on Belladonna to allow all listeners to "use their imagination and build their own scenario" rather than having the story handed to them. In that, he has succeeded. The focus here is unquestionably on the music--long, languid compositions built largely around pedal steel guitar. Unlike Lanois's previous discs, which included guest performers from Emmylou Harris to Willie Nelson to Bono, no famous friends appear here. Instead, much like the Sling Blade soundtrack (which Lanois penned), this disc remains a dreamy collection best suited to yoga, candlelit baths, and other moments of dusk fading to darkness. --Denise Sheppard

Product Description
When Brian Eno recorded his landmark ambient releases of the '80s and '90s, he transformed our perception of space, music, and performance. His collaborator on those albums, and on subsequent production work with U2, was Daniel Lanois. Lanois took the techniques he developed with Eno and went on to produce career albums for Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, and Emmylou Harris. Now the journey comes full circle on "Belladonna", an instrumental record that captures the often tense emotional dynamics of Eno's pioneering releases. Dense textures evolve into delicate Mexican melodies, capturing the disquieting serenity of American southwest landscapes. This is Daniel's defining moment.

so rich, so dense, daniel lanois brings together a great crew of musicians to create a many-textured masterpiece. all-instrumental, lanois' peddle steel playing is the force behind this subtle, flowing album. buy it.

1 out of 5 stars Hidious.......2006-12-28

I never write reviews for anything, but this one was so bad, I couldn't help myself. Everybody has different tastes, but if you like music with any kind of structure or melody at all, you will not like Belladonna. I could not make sense of it at all, it rambled on and on, never getting to the point, never picking a path, never building on a theme. It bored me with it's vague attempts to build a song. I listened to it 2 times just to make sure I wasn't imagining how bad it was, and then I dumped it. It was not my style, and I don't see how it could be anybody's style, but that's just me. I felt obligated to voice my opinion and possible save somebody out there from being bitterly disappointed. Good Luck on your listing adventures.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!!!.......2006-11-03

Definately worth getting. This is pure bliss. It's really relaxed and chill. Good for road trips or having on in the background while conversating with friends. Love this sort of ambience, I'm a big fan of Harold Budd and this is definately up there with his stuff. My favorite track is Frozen, but they're all really good. Check out the sound clips, that's what made me get this.

3 out of 5 stars Think Music for Westerns.......2006-03-08

If Brian Eno followed his ambient classic Music for Airports with Music for Westerns it would probably sound like this.On this album there is no singing by Daniel Lanois just a nice collection of beautiful western tinged ambient music.Very blissful and atmospheric. My only complaint is that it is also very short at under 40 minutes and I wish that it went on longer. If you're a fan of Brian Eno's non vocal work or of Harold Budd you will enjoy this dreamy album.

5 out of 5 stars Pure rapture.......2006-01-18

"Belladonna" is Daniel Lanois' most coherent album to date. The focus is on that glorious pedal steel he plays like no one else and a dreamscape inspired by time in Mexico. This is another world that Lanois invites the listener to enter. If you surrender to this music, it will become the soundtrack of your dreams. It has a very powerful pull that will take you deeper than emotion to a place of unknowing filled with incredible beauty. This is the anthesis of most music being released today, whatever the genre. It is too personal to fit any handy label. It appears that Lanois is channeling some very profound personal experiences into music that he can share with the wider world. If only briefly, we can join him on an amazing journey to a place few know exists, let alone ever visit.

The Essential Andreas Vollenweider surveys the Swiss harpist's career from his 1981 worldwide debut, Behind the Gardens, Behind the Wall, Under the Tree..., to 2000's Cosmopoly. In 1981, Vollenweider was a breath of fresh incense capable of creating sweet, poignant melodies with an electro-acoustic harp that reached from deep bass lows to shimmering highs. As Vollenweider's music progressed, world-music elements came to dominate his sound. Sometimes, as on "Belladonna" from 1982's Caverna Magica, the fusion resulted in world-music kitsch as Middle Eastern and Brazilian vocals wafted over snappy lounge rhythms. By the time of 1984's White Winds, Vollenweider had coalesced his multicultural approach into sweeping suites. The Essential Andreas Vollenweider concentrates on his upbeat, jazzier material, leaving the more textural, emotionally ambiguous pieces aside. Nevertheless, there's a breadth of vision represented on this CD that shows a musician always searching. Vollenweider's albums are meticulously recorded, with each instrument given its own space, creating an encompassing sense of architecture. But the remixes here improve the sound dramatically, especially on the earlier works. For the Vollenweider fan, there's nothing new here, but for the uninitiated, this is a good place to begin exploring the works of a New Age pioneer. --John Diliberto

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have Harp Album.......2003-07-01

Andreas Vollenweider has created great music and this has his best songs. The only other album I own by him is "Dancing With The Lion". My dad bought the cassette a long time ago, I listen to it sometimes but not a lot. Andreas Vollenweider is the second harp player I heard, the first was Hillary Stagg and I can see a big difference in their music mostly because of the background instruments.

All of the songs on the album were good but I found "Wanja The Wanderer" a bit strange and so did my dad when he listened to it, so I don't think I'll get his album "Kryptos". Here are my favorite songs: Behind the Gardens, Flight Feet and Root Hands, Belladonna, See My Love, Moon Dance, Dancing With The Lion, Night Fire Dance and Cor Do Amor. The only reason I gave the album 4 stars was because some songs sounded a bit strange.

The bonus material on this CD includes: songs with new mixes, mulltimedia cd including the music video of pearls and tears and a new song "Pace Verde"

If you don't own any albums by Andreas Vollenweider and are thinking of buying one I would recommend this one the most but if you already have this one I would recommend "Down To The Moon".

I hope you enjoy his music!

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Experience.......2002-03-28

This composer has never let me down from the very first time I heard his CD entitled, Down To The Moon. I was in a restaurant having lunch, and even though I was having a conversation with three other people, I was constantly drawn to the music playing in the backround. I asked the waiter for the name of the composer. After lunch, I ran out and purchased the CD. That was several years ago. I now have all of his works, and find that each one is as moving as the first time I listened to him. With this album, you'll get a sampling of his work, that will keep you coming back for more.

3 out of 5 stars Less Than I Expected.......2001-09-16

I have most of Vollenweider's CDs already, but was willing to purchase this one because I was interested in the remixed versions. In my opinion these "new" versions have not changed enough to justify the price of the CD. However, if you intend to purchase only one Vollenweider disc, this would be a good one. My recommendation: purchase a used disc.

4 out of 5 stars Not just "essential Vollenweider", simply essential!.......2001-04-29

Made in CAN in 2000, Serial# SK-89507, Playing Time 72:47

First of all, let me just say that, contrarily to what's stated on the cover artwork, there is NO multimedia section on my copy of this disc.

Still, this 12th album by AV covers material from all his albums, except his first (which, contrarily to popular belief, only half of which is on "The Trilogy" set), "Eolian Minstrel" and "Live".

The songs presented here have been remastered and remixed by AV and long-time percussionist collaborator Pedro Haldemann, and tend to focus on his more joyful genre. His early albums have also been remastered a few years ago, but the selections here contain some rich textures: his earlier works are a lot more new-age and "natural" than his latest offerings. "Stella" is the only track from "Cosmopoly", an otherwise bland and generally "ethnic" album: I would even suggest you listen to the sound clip from that album, and you'll be amazed to see what sounds can come out of his harp: much closer to classical guitar than harp.

An excellent starting point for the novice; if you enjoy, start gathering the albums chronologically, as you'll notice a somewhat significant departure from "Book Of Roses" forward.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2001-04-10

I have to confess that in all the years I've been listening to new instrumental music, I've avoided Andreas Vollenweider because I really don't like harp music. When I received a copy of "The Essential Andreas Vollenweider" for review, I kind of thought, "Oh great - another harp CD." Vollenweider's is such a huge and well-respected name that I decided that this would be an opportunity to educate myself. Many "best-of" and "greatest hits" albums are compiled by labels without any input from the artists, but this collection was chosen by Vollenweider himself from albums dating from 1981-1999. Several of the older tracks were remastered by Vollenweider, so this was a great chance to get to know a bit about this artist. It really didn't surprise me that quite a few of the songs were familiar from radio play, but I was surprised that many of them I never would have guessed as being played on harp. Vollenweider developed his electracoustic harp, which has quite a different sound from the standard acoustic harp. In addition to the harp, Vollenweider sings and plays wind instruments, guitars, accordion, keyboards, percussion, and "special fx". I was also surprised at how much I found myself enjoying this album! Musical influences can be heard from all over the world, and most of the music is lively, rhythmic, and infectious. I especially like "Moon Dance", "Dancing With the Lion", and Pace Verde", but the album as a whole is a wonderful sampler for those of us who are relatively new to Vollenweider's music, and is an excellent "best of" collection for his longtime fans. I will definitely be adding more of his music to my collection! The CD is multimedia-enhanced and contains the music video to "Pearls and Tears". Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Kind of Bland.......2005-12-28

Anthrax and Joey Belladonna were great together. When they split... well, they each got bland. Lyrics and song topics became dull, dull, dull both in Anthrax and for Belladonna. On this album, if you skim the lyrics, it really seems one long rant against his former bandmates. He's understandably bitter. That doesn't always make for a great album. It gets old and kind of bland.

5 out of 5 stars Too bad nobody knows about it.......2005-03-29

This album is superb. I know probably no one knows about it, and the fact that I'm the first person to make a review on this album 10 years after its release speaks for itself. However this ROCKS hard. This release would have been the logical step right after Persistence of Time. If not better than this album it certainly isn't worse. Trust me, I know my metal and recognize a good album when I hear one. This one is filled with powerfull riffs and great vocals by Belladonna. If you're and old Anthrax fan you should own this album because it simply is that good. If you're in thrash metal in general buy it. And for those of you who don't like old Anthrax, who don't like thrash metal, I'm sure you can still enjoy this metal release nonetheless. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly good, Sounds like late 80's Anthrax.......2003-03-11

Joey Belladonna recorded this after being kicked out of Anthrax. It was put out in 1995, it is a good album, and way better than anything Anthrax has released since "TSOWN" with Bush. Some of the songs are better than others, but this is a high quality album with a lot of thought, energy, and effort. Joey is working on new material at joeybelladonna.com Buy this now, you won't be sorry!!

New Relase from the Former Voice of Anthrax.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Bit More Preferable than new Anthrax.......2005-12-28

Same as his first release, Belladonna's solo stuff (like new Anthrax) lacks the character they both had when a unit together. His voice is still great, and I might prefer this to, say Anthrax's Stomp 442 album. Ho-hum, though.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I'd hoped for........2003-06-06

I love Joey Belledonna's voice and his first disc was excellent... on par w/ Anthrax. This, however, lacks any of the strength or spirit that it's predecessor displayed. The production was muggy, the writing and playing uninspired, and even Joey (like the rest of the album), seemed to be unfocussed.
Luckily, Joey Belladonna is just about ready to offer up a new disc which is rumored to be more along the lines of is first release... one can hope anyway. At least it's not as bad as the new Metallica!

4 out of 5 stars The sophomore follow up..........2003-03-11

This is Joey Belladonna's sophomore follow up to his Self-Titled album. It was put out in 1998 (3 years after the S/T album). I think the S/T album Belladonna put out was better than Spells of Fear. If you made me describe this to you I'd say, it sounds like early Anthrax. Joey plays drums on this and it is quite good, although the guitars are not as good as they could be. Still it is good thrash/Thrax style metal, giving a good ol' feeling that metal is still around. I guess joey is working on a new album and his website, which is (type in his name).com has more information about this album that I have.

Album Description

Inkubus Sukkubus are without a doubt the leading lights of the UK gothic/pagan scene with cross- (no pun intended) genre appeal to both rock & metal fans as well. The original aim of the band was (as it still is today) to be the vehicle in which the celebration of the Pagan experience could be conveyed. Originally released in 1992, this limited edition features 14 tracks and was their debut album. Resurrection. 2005.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Blessed Be!.......2005-06-24

I heard Inkubus Sukkubus by accident on Web-radio one day ...and it was one of those rare life-altering events. I was a pure Rock n' Roll Guy for most of my life, but hearing the pristinely pure and yet somehow tormented voice of the incredibly beautiful and obscenely talented lead singer Candia, I was hooked. Some say that a picture is worth a 1000 words... well tangentially, I say this woman's voice cannot be described in words...it simply left me speechless... I bought all their albums (imports included) within the week and have told everyone I know... I am planning a trip to the UK just so I can see them perform...They are just that good...

What Makes Inkubus Sukkubus so amazing are their lyrics and instruments are fantastic as well...so there is much more to this band than the stunningly hot and super-cool lead singer who I now feel like praising all over again... (Man she is so talented its makes it even more of a sin that Brittany spears is famous and Candia is not...) But back to the band... They really are amazing... They experiment with different production techniques and sounds so that no two songs are the same despite all having a strong pagan/wiccan influence... You can download some of their songs from their Website... please give them a try... you wont be disappointed...

I cannot over-emphasize how much you need to buy this album (and all the other Inkubus Sukkubus Albums) If you are a young Goth you likely have them already... but even white collar lawyer-schmucks like me can benefit from the mind expanding experience this bands music provides...I thought I was clever before...but I have learned so much from this band... My life has been changed for the better... and yours will be too if you let this goddess sing for you...

Thanks for everything Inkubus Sukkubus... Blessed Be!

4 out of 5 stars Global Village Club.......2000-03-02

Welcome to the Global Village Club. Here in this room, we have Afrodesia: The Tribal Sound of Irma. This compilation is on the tribal house tip, providing some really strong tracks to dance to or to zone out to. All the tracks are percussion heavy, with afro-caribbean beats throughout the CD. Check out Jestofunk's track or Shazz and my favorite, Sam Paglia! Do not be mislead, this isn't your run of the mill type of compilation. Most of the tracks are either great or good. This isn't your filler compilation.

Irma is a label that definitely is worth keeping an eye on.
