Great album terrible IDIOTIC re-issue.......2007-07-04
Fans of the later big budget corporate albums will be confused by this record. Seek corporate rock elsewhere you niny brains, there is plenty of that stuff out there. Tons of it. You are obviously in the wrong place.
Unfortunately, REALLY UNFORTUNATELY, this is a textbook example of how to screw a reissue up. Its hard to understand their decisions.
FIRST off leave off the best cut on the original album "See Emily Play" which is a psychedelic classic and maybe THE psychedelic classic of the era!!! DUH! ??? Its the first song on the original and sets the tone for what follows. SECOND change the order of the cuts putting the long instrumental cut that is more like later corporate Pink Floyd RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE... for no apparent reason??? I like Interstellar Overdrive. But it is probably the song that most original Pink Floyd fans will skip EVERY TIME and it shouldn't be right in the middle. Sid got it right the first time when he put it last. It works much better that way. The idiot who decided to reorder the songs is just that, an idiot. You ding dong, you know who you are.
The inclusion of out takes "Bike" and "Flaming" which are not on the original is a good thing. I wish they had included more out takes. There is certainly room for more of the songs from that era. Oh well I guess I'll just have to DOWNLOAD them if I want to hear them. Dumb. The original order should have been preserved and as many of the outtakes as they could fit should have been included at the END after Interstellar Overdrive, to differentiate them from the originals. If they had done that this would be a 6 star CD. The music is great despite the production.
One last thing. Syd's problems, contrary to popular UNINFORMED opinion, were NOT due to drugs. If they were, EVERYONE in Pink Floyd, most of their original fans, and a good percentage of this generation would have succumbed too. Think about it, 90% of the people who built the personal computer industry dropped acid and listened to music like this. Syd had organic mental disease. Every review that mentions that Syd was taken out by drugs should be suspect, because it doesn't take much insight to understand that's just TOTAL NONSENSE.
One star for this reason - so people who are searching might be able to find this, one of the few reviews that makes sense. However its still a great album. I'd want to own a vinyl original before I'd want this but if you don't have a turntable, then buy this and DOWNLOAD "See Emily Play." Maybe just download it all.

Tuesday 5th June: Floyd Lays Plans For Piper
To mark the 40th anniversary of the original release of Pink Floyd's first
album 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn', a special edition is planned for
release via EMI Records on Tues 28th August in North America, and Monday
September 3rd in Europe.
The packaging, designed by Storm Thorgerson, resembles a cloth-covered book, and holds 3 CD discs, along with a 12-page reproduction Syd Barrett notebook.
Discs 1 and 2 will contain the full 'Piper' album, represented in both
stereo and mono versions. Both have been newly remastered by James Guthrie.
Disc 3 includes bonus tracks, including the following: all the Pink Floyd singles from 1967, ('Arnold Layne', 'See Emily Play', and 'Apples And Oranges'), plus the B sides 'Candy And A Current Bun' and 'Paintbox'. Other tracks are a version of 'Interstellar Overdrive' - Take 2 of the original recording sessions, previously only available on an EP in France - and the 1967 stereo version of 'Apples And Oranges'.
Other activities surrounding the 40th anniversary celebrations will be

Floyd's Beginnings.......2007-05-27
The excellent opener 'Astronome Domine' gives a good indication of what the Floyd sounded like then, with lyrics about stars, planets and underground caves. As to the best of the 'nursery rhyme' songs there are strange stories about 'Lucifer Sam' (Barrett's cat), 'Matilda Mother', 'Scarecrow' 'The Gnome' and a disturbing final track,'Bike', including accompaniment of ringing clocks and geese. It includes that wonderfully whimsical line "I've got a mouse but it hasn't got a house - I don't know why I call him Gerald".
Of the 2 psychedelic instrumentals, 'Pow R Toc H' has a slight jazzy tinge to it. The epic 'Interstellar Overdrive', is a joint collaboration by the whole band. Nearly 10 minutes long it is typical space rock, and needs repeated listening to really appreciate it. It does have some structure to it and the way the original theme gradually creeps back in is rather clever. The original LP version had more layers of sound on it, so this version on CD comes across a bit thin, unfortunately.
There is only one really duff track on the album which oddly enough is Roger Water's first and only composition here, 'Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk'. It truly is a mess. Thankfully his writing skills improved immeasurably after Syd Barrett's departure. But PATGOD's signature and originality lies with its main ideas man, the late Syd Barrett. Although the album in all honesty does sound dated now, for its time it was controversial, original and influential. After Barrett's departure and the addition of Dave Gilmour, PF began to evolve their sound (the follow up to PATGOD already sounded progressively different in style) but they always retained an element of psychedelia on their future albums and never forgot Syd Barrett.

Those lines are the most appropriate lines I have ever heard. Because it's the way I feel every time I hear every part of that song, and of the album. Of course, I do love the lyrics and the band, etc, but there is something in the way that he sings that blows my mind to bits. Every song on this album is so beautiful and hypnotic that it could arguably stand out on any other album in music history. Please give this album many chances, and realize that it may take several listens before you even can get to the next level of the greatness of this album. I heard it almost four or five times, casually, before it started to hit me, and then one day, I immediately named it one of my favorite five albums; now it's my number one without any doubts. Only this band could top the effort of At Dawn. I really can't say any more about this album other than that it is just simply the most beautiful thing I have ever encountered in my life. This album is special, and the band is as much. I've only seen them twice, but please see them after you get familiar with at least a couple of their albums, and I promise you will come back home and play their albums more religiously than a priest reads a verse before mass.
The perfect transition to "It Still Moves".......2006-06-27
The band's second album "At Dawn" (14 tracks, 74 min.), issued in 2001, eloaborates on the themes explored in "Tennessee Fire" in many songs such as the title track, "Lowdown" and others. But the band expands its sound greatly, introducing the electric guitar on the brooding "Honest Man", an all-out rocker on "Strangulation" and even a slight reggae sound on "Phone Went West", forshadowing the "Off the Record" song on last year's "Z" album. In retrospect, this album is the perfectly logical middle link between "Tennessee Fire" and its next album "It Still Moves", and a great album at that, albeit somewhat overlong at 74 min. Nevertheless, it's a must for any MMJ fan and it certainly won't disappoint the casual fan or any fan of great music.
My Morning Jacket continues to ascend the ranks in the music biz. It builds its reputation not just with great album after gret album, but with amazing live shows. When I saw the band most recently, at Bonnaroo earlier this month, it put on an epic, monstrous really, 3 hour set that started at midnight. It brought the house down with its tireless energy and great song selection (both originals and covers). MMJ will be heard of for many years to come, no question.

*It's just Boring*
The ensemble doesn't have the energy one would expect to play "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.

With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.
The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.
I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Formally, this is minimal, meditative, non-vocal, headphone-oriented rock music. Comparisons to Explosions in the Sky are very apt. Like that band, Red Sparowes know when to stop playing, and how to use the quiet spaces between the notes to build a quiet intensity. It's just a little too quiet and not quite intense enough.
Still, I must admit that this band has a lot potential. I look forward to their new stuff.

The action in this tale about the 18th century adventurer and (at least in popular lore) seducer is set in Cassanova's native Venice in the mid-1700s, so it makes sense that the soundtrack would be loaded with Baroque pieces. The Venice-based Tomaso Albinoni is featured prominentaly, along with heavyweights such as Antonio Vivaldi, Jean-Baptiste Rameau, and George Frideric Handel, and lesser-known composers such as Arcangelo Corelli, Francesco Durante, and Alexandre Desplat. Er, actually Desplat is a contemporary French film composer who also released his score for the couldn't-be-more-different Syriana shortly after Casanova came out. Of the two pieces he penned here, "A Venetian Virgin" is in pure Baroque style, while "Inquisitor Pucci" betrays a more modern film-music vibe. Meanwhile, orchestrator Sonny Kompanek rearranged a couple of the tracks and authored the tense "The Plume's Nom Is Casanova," which doesn't sound embarrassing sandwiched between pieces by Albinoni and Handel. Overall, it would have been nice to get longer excerpts from the pieces--many feel chopped into too-small fragments--but the music's innate grace and elegance can't be beat for a period film. Or for any film, really: Vivaldi's Concerto in C Major ("The Doge's Decree") will be familiar to buffs, who will remember it featuring prominently in the Dustin Hoffman-¬Meryl Streep showdown Kramer vs. Kramer back in 1979. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
Sheer Beauty for the Ears.......2006-07-25
The disc walks you through the movie with no changes that I could tell from the original score. The only omission I found was that the song dubbed "Casanova's Theme" is played in much greater length in the closing credits, and that didn't seem to make it to the CD. Not a terrible loss.

The producers of this film fortunately went to the trouble of hiring some of the top period performance musician-specialists in the country (perhaps in the entire world) to record the soundtrack to Casanova. I know, because several of them were faculty members of the Oberlin Conservatory Baroque Performance Institute who went AWOL to Hollywood in June 2005 for the recording sessions. We all forgave them, and were actually quite excited that period music performance was having its day on the silver screen.
Do not miss this exquisite potpourri of wonderful baroque composers' works performed as closely as humanly possible to the way that they heard their works during their lifetimes! The film may not have been intended to be historically accurate (part of the fun), but the music certainly ended up that way. Not only that, but it sounds heavenly (unlike Casanova's antics) and up-to-date, not musty and old as if it were sealed in a museum case.
