Editorial Reviews

Product Description
When it was first released as a four-LP package in 1972, this marathon live recording hit #3 on Billboard's Pop album chart and was certified RIAA gold. Following up their 1971 album Chicago III, this historic set features all the early hits and spotlights Chicago at the peak of their initial success. Painstakingly remastered, it now includes a full disc of previously unreleased material showcasing their trademark horns, Robert Lamm's keyboards and vocals, and the guitar virtuosity of the late Terry Kath. The set's packaging makes a nod to the original LP release, with an outer cardboard slipcase, four CDs in individual jackets, a 36-page booklet with original LP artwork, and mini-reproductions of the three huge posters that were part of the original release.

Walter Parazaider (sax, woodwinds), Lee Loughnane (trumpet), James Pankow (trombone), Robert Lamm (keyboards, vocals), Terry Kath (guitar, vocals), Danny Seraphine (drums), and Peter Cetera (bass, vocals) formed Chicago in the Second City in 1967. They released their debut album, Chicago Transit Authority, in 1969. The double LP sold more than two million copies on the strength of sweet pop hits and psychedelic rock explorations that appealed to traditional Top 40 fans as well as hipper listeners tuning in to the new free-form FM radio.

This was just the start of Chicago's enduring popularity, which includes five consecutive #1 albums, 21 Top 10 singles, and worldwide sales of over 120 million. Chicago continues to be a major concert draw, their lineup now including Bill Champlin (keyboards, vocals), Jason Scheff (bass, vocals), Keith Howland (guitar), and Tris Imboden (drums), along with founding members Lamm, Parazaider, Loughnane, and Pankow.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest live recordings of all time.......2007-07-04

Chicago in their early days cranking out jazz/rock inovative music at Carnegie Hall. Terry Kath is sorely missed from the group. His influence on Chicago was essential to their early sound. If you like electric guitar buy this collection.

5 out of 5 stars At Carnegie Hall, Vol. 1-4 Chicago IV.......2007-01-19

This is a must have for any true Chicago fan.

5 out of 5 stars an absolute must !.......2007-01-12

One of the greatest bands of the pop/rock world in full swing! All of Chicago's indispensable tunes are there and the recording, in the present Rhino transfer, is more than adequate; and, to top it all,the documentation and packaging should be seen as a model by the industry. This box-set would definitely be part of my remote planet discography !

5 out of 5 stars Passionate, timelessly captures the moment.......2006-11-03

When I was 13 I had an album collection consisting of Zeppellin, Sabbath, Cooper, Cream, Beethovin, Bach and the brand-new Chicago at Carnegie Hall. I haven't heard this album in 20 years (since my last record player gave up the ghost and I switched to cd's and electronic formats) and my wife surprised me last night with this 4 cd set. WOW! This is how live music should be performed. For those out there who actually LIKE live music to sound just like the studio version this isn't for you. But if you want to hear what a late 60's era hard-working touring band sounded like night after night when mainstream audiences cared about musicianship and composition without the "repairing" of such recordings by later studio work...then this set is an excellent example. This has got to be on anyone's list of top ten live rock albums. I recommend a strong buy!

5 out of 5 stars CHICAGO AND TERRY KATH IN A DIFFERENT ERA (APRIL 1971).......2006-09-25

Beautifully remastered, excellent packaging. This set contains a fourth disc which you hear some really awesome Terry Kath guitar solos. The fourth disc really solidifies the great guitar work of Terry Kath. The extra disc includes "an hour in the shower" which makes the price of this set worth buying, and is a must for any hardcore Chicago fan. The fourth disc was done under Lee Loughane's supervision and painstakingly mixed by veteran engineer Dave Donnelly.I am not a live album fan, but Carnegie Hall really has some tunes that closely match the studio recordings beautifully. The horns and flutes are really loud and sharp and really stand out while listening. I enjoyed this live recording.Carnegie Hall was done when James William Guercio was the producer of Chicago records, long before the days of David Foster who turned them into a 1980s hit machine. Foster during the 1980s helped Chicago score some huge hits, while Chicago became nothing more than Peter Ceteras back up band, setting up Ceteras own solo career. Foster also limited drummer Danny Seraphines drumming during the 80s recordings. Carnegie Hall, catches Chicago in an incredible stage of thier career. The remastering has been done with great care and expertise. Rhino has done another excellent job with the packaging, includes (booklet and posters). One thing that amazes me is while reading the booklet I found out Chicago has been putting on live shows since May 23rd, 1967 and still going strong today, amazing! Enjoy carnegie hall if you dont like live recordings you might make an exception for "Chicago at Carnegie Hall"

Simon Barere (1896-1951) is the great pianist to whom critics most condescend. Harold Schonberg's evaluation in his The Great Pianists is typical: "Barere was not one of the remarkable musical minds, but a playing mechanism startling for speed, accuracy, and disregard of difficulties." The release of the first volume in a series devoted to Barere's live recordings at Carnegie Hall in the 1940s makes it clear, however, that Barere was more than merely a great virtuoso. This CD makes available for the first time the pianist's performances of Beethoven's Sonata No. 31 and Chopin's Ballade in F Minor--repertory that can scarcely be called superficial. His approach to the late Beethoven sonata is essentially Romantic. But his extremely flexible tempos pay strict attention to line and to the shaping of phrases, thus investing the performance with a naturalness of pulse and expression that keeps it from sounding old-fashioned. Barere's F Minor Ballade belongs among the greatest. (Unfortunately, the first 14 bars are missing.) His remarkable technique allows him to reach tremendous climaxes achieved elsewhere only by the likes of Hofmann and Horowitz. But Barere's emotional commitment to the music is such that his effects never seem mere outbursts of temperament (as Hofmann's do) or merely calculated (as with Horowitz). The other works on this disc, whether Bach's "Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue" or Liszt's "Gnomenreigen," also receive persuasively dazzling readings. --Stephen Wigler

5 out of 5 stars In this day and age of "homogenized" live albums, one performed with both passion and heart, the way a live album used to be!.......2006-04-13

I know there are lot of you who have issues involving the original mix/master of this 1995 Chicago Records re-issue, as well as the 1990 Columbia CD release, such as the "kazoo"-sounding horn section.

I chose this particular issue, along with the Group Portrait box set (sadly not reissued/remastered when Rhino picked up the Columbia/Chicago back catalog), and Chicago IX 1995 CDs, for the purpose of making an expanded version, a true anthology, of this legendary band in their "glory years" (1968-75, I-IX), in which I will include two tracks ("25 or 6 to 4", this live version absolutely smokes the studio cut from II, and "I'm A Man") from this ignored masterpiece as well as tracks from III and XIII (also ignored on Chicago IX) to add onto it.

Note about the mix, especially the brass section, don't forget, this album was recorded in 1971 (yes, 1971!!!), and the legendary Carnegie Hall's acoustics were never conducive to electronic amplification, as one reviewer mentioned, but it is raw, first take, and the way a live album should be, not remixed beyond recognition to the point of it sounding TOO perfect, but instead one done with passion, heart, and something missing, especially in this day and age of "homogenized" live albums, which are mostly loaded with overdubbed tracks, "crowd noise" enhancements, and too-perfect-lip-synced vocals: integrity and respect for their loyal die-hard fans, the music business, and 100% effort in every note played and sung! It's not perfect but it is all real, with none of the enhancements!

Most bands on today's "live" albums are simply going through the motions, and not really pouring out their heart and soul into making one, they just simply do it to make money, rather than do it for the fans, who they now resort to gouging out of $25.00 a ticket to see what winds up as garbage, and in agreement with one reviewer, this is the best of the 3 live sets Chicago has recorded. No matter what issue of this album you choose, original or remastered, if you are old-school as both a music fan as well as a musician like me, get this one! Highly recommended!

This was the second Chicago album I ever heard... right after Chicago 17. Talk about culture shock! I first thought "how full of themselves can they be? Four albums?" Then, given the fact they sold out a week at Carnegie Hall and being the first rock band to do so then I understand. The packaging for the album was fantastic: a full booklet complete with all concert listings from '67-'71 and three posters. As far as the music, the venue has more to do with it than anything. Carnegie Hall isn't friendly to electronic amplification. The engineering is not quite up to par. On the first night, Peter Cetera stated the recording crew were still tooling with their amplifiers during the first night's concert. Shouldn't that have been done ahead of time?? "In The Country" sounds great, as does "South California Purples", "Introduction", "I Don't Want Your Money", and "I'm A Man". "25 or 6 to 4" does sound a bit slow. Kath sounds like he's just going through the motions on vocals on "Make Me Smile". His guitar work is great as usual. The stereo mix on the vocals is intriguing. The dialogue between songs is genuine; especially the part where a audience member requests "Make Me Smile" - Lamm says, "Keep sitting there man".
I believe the vinyl records sound better than the CDs. For an album of this magnitude, they should at least remaster it somehow and improve the sound a bit. There should be lots of master tapes for a week's worth of recording.
If you can get your hands on it, LIVE IN JAPAN is a better sounding album. Recorded at Osaka in '72, the double disc is not as good as "Carnegie Hall". Sony recorded the shows using 2 eight track machines, giving producer James Williams Guercio 16 tracks to work with. The sound is great but the playing is not as tight as it was in New York.
If you like live recordings, this is an interesting find. While not the greatest live album of the seventies (I believe that distinction goes to Neil Diamond's HOT AUGUST NIGHT), it is the best of Chicago's three live album releases.

3 out of 5 stars An ambitious project.......2004-08-17

Over 3 hours of Chicago, most would cringe at the thought.
However this is a band that was in peak form with the legendary guitarist Terry Kath.
After Kath died (self inflicted) the band changed their direction for the worse.
This 3 CD set (with poor horn sound) is a concert recording covering the most interesting period of this large band.
Chicago never did anything small scale.
Some great songs througout however 3 CDs are too much to take in.
A 2 CD set would have been better.
The drum sound on this CD is my highlight, brilliant.
