Death Cab for Cutie turn difficult personal issues into literary rock songs while straddling the narrow line between blissful pop and driving indie rock. The Northwest act's songs soar high like Built to Spill's or Beulah's, and almost every track on The Photo Album is as musically bouncy and upbeat as the best of those bands. As catchy as the songs on The Photo Album may be, though, it's really front man Benjamin Gibbard's comfort with laying his emotional issues bare that makes this an excellent album. "Styrofoam Plates" is the most stunning track, with words that leave chills long after they've disappeared. As Gibbard sings about anger for a dead father ("It's not quite a stretch to say you were not quite a father / But a donor of seeds to a poor single mother / That would raise us alone / We never saw the money / It went down your throat down the hole in your belly"), his stark honesty makes this dysfunctional family story the most compelling piece of this album. The other issues of clumsy relationships pale a little in comparison, but The Photo Album still leaves little doubt that Death Cab deserve all the indie rock accolades they have received. --Jennifer Maerz

4 out of 5 stars I don't even like EMO..........2007-01-20

I didn't discover Death Cab until Transatlantacisim (thanks to the OC) but this band has quickly become one of my favorites. I think they are rediculously talented, and I love the way they structure their music and lyrics. This album doesn't disapoint if you appreciate what this band is doing. It's a little less clean than Transatlantacisim and Plans, but it's still highly enjoyable. I only rate this 4 stars because I compare it to their more recent releases, and I feel that this band is getting better as time goes along.

3 out of 5 stars Honestly, one of their weakest releases.......2006-09-14

I am a huge Death Cab for Cutie fan. When I disovered them, I bought all of their albums except one. For some reason, I never got around to buying The Photo Album. I've read all the reviews of this album and most say that it's Death Cab's best and beats Transatlanticsm and Plans. Well, I finally bought it and was very excited to listen to it and I was expecting something better from what I am used to hearing from Death Cab. The cd started, and wow was I dissapointed. First off, there are only 10 songs - 9 if you don't count the mediocre first track. You'd think that this small amount of tracks, every song would be real good...wrong. This isn't like any other Death Cab album. Yeah there are a couple tracks that are beautiful but what the hell is up with Ben Gibbard's singing on this cd? It just sounds to me like he just rushed and threw some vocals on top. Most of time he sings off timing (but not off key) and that makes it very hard to listen to. And also on the third track, the song is ruined because you can barely hear Ben's vocals!! I don't know what the band was thinking on that song because it's a great song but the volume on the vocals are unnessary low. The songs overall just don't really pop out to you. My only favorite songs on this are Blacking Out The Friction and Coney Island. Now those two are exactly what I love about Death Cab...catchy lyrics and amazing music. I was so dissapointed and I shouldn't have listened to all these people that said this was Death Cab's best release. So don't make the same mistake. But you know, it's not 100% bad but after listening to Transatlanticsm and Plans, it just sounds weak compared to those. This is an honest review from a loyal Death Cab for Cutie fan so please don't ignore this. Pick this up though if you want to complete your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Very good collection of songs.......2006-05-07

This CD is obviously one of the catchier DCFC releases. I love this CD. It is the DCFC album I go back to again and again. One of my big complaints are albums with 1 good song, 2 ok songs and 7 bad songs. It makes me feel like I wasted my money buying a whole CD, but The Photo Album has a very good collection of songs. This is the 3rd DCFC Album I own, and it is very good. The music is so amazing. These guys have real talent. DCFC have definately won me over as a long time fan. The melodic pop mixed with deeply emotional lyrics are just what the world needs more of, good no nonsense music. I am looking forward to the next album.

5 out of 5 stars favorite death cab album.......2006-04-22

This album is my favorite from Death Cab. I first heard them right after they released Transatlanticism and fell in love. Some of my favorite songs are "A Movie Script Ending," "Why You'd Want to Live Here," "Blacking Out the Friction," and "I Was a Kaleidoscope." However, the entire CD is good, and I never skip a track when listening.

4 out of 5 stars Underrated. Some of my favorite Death Cab.......2006-04-09

When it comes to Death Cab, I think many people overlook The Photo Album due to the success of Transatlanticism and the recent release of Plans, and that's sad. I enjoy Photo Album soo much more than I enjoy Plans. If you can't somehow find some form of solitude or bliss from "We Laugh Indoors," then I think something's wrong. The song vaguely reminds me of "We Looked Like Giants," and that's a good thing. Check out "Styrofoam Plates," "Coney Island" and "Movie Script Ending" as well. These are easily some of my favorite Death Cab tunes.
I always liked DCfC's raw, more indie-sound anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Sibelius!!!.......2006-02-28

The "Orchestral Favorites with Photo Album" CD on the Ondine label is an excellent beginners guide to the music of the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. While some essential pieces are missing here (notably excerpts from his monumental symphonies), this disc still offers some prime examples of Sibelius's best work including the Karelia Suite, his Valse Triste, the tone poems "Pohjola's Daughter" and "Swan of Tuonela", excerpts from "The Tempest" play and his all-time classic opus "Finlandia" which is taken at a slightly slower tempo than usual on this disc. Of special interest to die-hard Sibelians is the inclusion of the "Andante Festivo" which is conducted by Sibelius himself. This 1939 recording is not only notable for featuring the composer as conductor, it is also the only recording that exists of Sibelius interpreting his own music - a defining historic moment that is worth the price of this CD alone.
In addition to the excellent music heard here, this CD also includes a generously compiled 42-page photo album which features many historic photos of Sibelius throughout his lifetime from childhood to retirement. The booklet also includes a detailed essay on Sibelius's life and a timeline of key moments in the composer's career.
This is definitely a well-put together document both musically and visually of this masterful genius. The music as well as the booklet are a fascinating look at the life and work of Jean Sibelius.
Highly Recommended!!!
For another excellent introduction to Sibelius's music, I also recommend the "Greatest Hits" disc on Sony Music. While the Sony disc duplicates some of the pieces included here, it does include excerpts from masterpieces not featured here such as music from the symphonies and violin concerto.

5 out of 5 stars Good Things Come In Small Packages.......2003-10-28

I feel so fortunate to come across people quite by accident.
I checked out a small concert series called, The Art Of The Song.
It was one of the best decisions I have made because I got to hear and meet Mary Sue Twohy. Mary Sue is a little girl but a big talent. I am moved by just about every song on this disc. A crystal clear voice and solid guitar playing. Favorite songs are, Autumn Night, I want to learn this one. Color Me, Can't Buy A New Heart, Amy Lynn, they are all good. As I look through the CD booklet I can't find a weak song on this disc. I am so happy to have met Mary Sue and even happier to hear her whenever I feel like playing this CD. And I do play it often.

4 out of 5 stars This music soothes my world-weary soul........1999-04-21

When listening to this music, I felt somewhat removed, as if Ms. Twohy had taken me to a more peaceful time. I could picture myself sitting on the dock of a lake at twilight, listening to the crickets chirp, hearing the sweet sounds of her guitar wafting gently through the night. I especially enjoyed the clarity of her voice in St. Cecilia. Thank you, Mary Sue Twohy, for being a haven in a harried, hectic existence!

5 out of 5 stars Modern folk by a luminous singer........1999-04-12

Mary Sue sings skillfully about a higher ideal of love. Lost, found, observed, and fondly remembered. Not just eros, but the love between friends, family, and even childhood neighbors. Her singing combines a naturally beautiful voice with excellent control and versatility. Mainly focusing on modern folk, Mary Sue also sings a traditional Gaelic folk song and a gospel song she wrote. Aided by Pete Kennedy's seemless and transparent producing, "training butterflies" closely simulates Mary Sue's live performances which are also well worthing catching. Listening to Mary Sue's singing can brighten a cloudy day or make you look at a beautiful day in a new light. You can think of her as St. Johns Wort for the soul. As an artist, she aptly shares her unique vision of the world, a world where love never dies. Do yourself a favor, check out this well-crafted first album.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, lyrical songs of love and friendship.......1999-03-24

This is a beautiful lyrical CD that I enjoy very much. Most songs were written by Ms Twohy and are beautifully performed. I especially enjoy the song "Amy Lynn", a ballad of childhood friendship. It brought back memories of my own childhood and the friends I have lost touch with. The final song is a ballad to St Cecilia, the patron saint of music in which Ms Twohy uses the phrase "Those who sing pray twice" If that is the case, then this album is a soaring Alleluia to the heavens.

5 out of 5 stars light pop this is not.......2007-01-14

Successive listenings to this wonderful, slightly dolorous album continue to reveal more and more varied influences. She is at once serious without being depressed [or depressing], moody without slipping into self-reflexiveness.

Comparisons may be the best way to describe the music, and the mood. Here we have Julie Cruise [remember Twin Peaks?] without the monotony. Here we have Peter Gabriel-esque cadances--confident, almost march-like. Here we have Pink Floyd without David Gilmour's soaring guitar solos. Most of all, we have orchestral music highly reminiscent of The Moody Blues at their best. Through it all we have her wonderful, wonderful voice, and lyrics that are truly interesting.

I was previously unfamiliar with Barbara Trentalange's work. After picking up this album I am a huge fan. Buy it. Enjoy it. Albums this good are too rare right now.

"The seductive vocals of singer Bre Loughlin are like a wickedly scrumptious marzipan in the center of rich chocolate. While reminiscent of art pop picadors like Lene Lovich and Toyah Wilcox, she also counts the solid songwriting of artists like The Cure and Billy Bragg as influences. The resulting songcraft is paradoxically dark and often whimsical." - THREE IMAGINARY GIRLS "Offstage, Bre Loughlin is easygoing, a good listener, humble, gracious about other bands and musicians--very girl-next-door. Onstage, an invisible switch is flipped: she becomes wildly charismatic, gracefully alluring, intensely passionate, and radiantly sexy." - SEATTLE TIMES

"Her chilling croon is part Siouxsie Sioux, part Martha Davis (of The Motels), and all icy diva. She sidles up to the piercing high notes and purrs seductively until they fall into her range." - SEATTLE POST INTELLIGENCER

Seattle-based singer/composer/performer Bre Loughlin has received international airplay and recognition for her electronic projects Kuma and Daylight Basement. On her first acoustic release, Modern American Photo Album, she brings signature edgy vocal stylings and infectious melodise to a vulnerable arena of minimal instrumentation.

        4 out of 5 stars Nice album.......2004-09-05

First of all I discovered Death Cab with Transatlanticism. This album is the previous work by them and I have to say it's different. Standout tracks are Debate Exposes Doubt and A Movie Script Ending (and it's one of the best songs by Death Cab For Cutie I've heard). If you liked the first albums, you are going to like this one for sure... great music that anyone that loves music should like.

        2 out of 5 stars [Money] 4 songs?!?!?.......2002-02-21

I bought the regular US release of The Photo Album shortly after it came out at a local record store for ten dollars when I found out that thier website sold out of the 2-CD limited edition with 3 of the 4 bonus tracks on this Japanese import. Don't be misled by my 2 stars... The Photo Album is awesome, although I don't find it to be as good as We Have The Facts... and The Forbidden Love EP. My favorite track is by far "Information Travels Faster", who's chorus I've not been able to get out of my head since I bought it. It's first lines "I intentionally wrote it out to be an illegible mess, you wanted me to write you letters, but I'd rather lose your address" completely sets the painfully sweet mood for the song while bringing back memories of similar scenes from my own life. Also of note is the faster rocking "Blacking Out The Friction", which sports a great repetitive guitar hook. By all means, DO buy The Photo Album. Then ask yourself: Would four more songs have really been worth an additional thirty-two dollars? I think not. Especially when three of the four can now be purchaced inexpensively on "The Stability EP". If you really want that one last song, twleve dollars on thier website will get you The Photo Album on vinyl with that elusive track "Gridlock Caravans", which is much cooler than owning a rediculously overpriced Japanese CD, anyway.
