You can almost hear Simon & Garfunkel begin to like each other again on this now-legendary set. On September 19, 1981, the duo reunited for just the second time since their initial breakup and revealed a camaraderie that had apparently vanished years earlier. Not only do they reprise their shared hits, they also work in a few of Paul Simon's solo gems and a couple of telling covers--one from the Everly Brothers and one from Chuck Berry. The band includes the best session men around. By the time they get to the sincerity of "Old Friends" and the joy of "The 59th Street Bridge Song," you sense a relationship fully repaired. After this success, they even planned a studio record together--one that eventually became Simon's overlooked Hearts and Bones--few were surprised when it did not come to pass. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a great live album............2007-06-08

THE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK (recorded in 1981) is probably one of the best live albums I have heard. I originally saw Simon & Garfunkel's reunion concert in Central Park on television. It was a popular "pledge drive" show on PBS, with good reason. This performance was a reconciiliation for Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, who had a fracas some years before (I think they call it "artistic differences" in polite conversation), and broke up their duo. You can feel a really renewed sense of camraderie from these two men. During the time that they broke up, leading up to their Central Park reunion, Paul Simon had recorded some moderately successful hits as a soloist, and interjects some of his tunes ("Kodochrome," as an example) with S&G's greatest hits.

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel sound great here, and sound like they are having a wonderful time playing to an audience that loves them. They open with "Mrs. Robinson," their hit from the soundtrack to THE GRADUATE...."coo coo cujoo," to paraphrase the lyrics. What a brilliant tune and no one sings it with more gusto than the men who made it famous! "Scarborough Fair," "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and many other numbers weave Simon's steadfast melody with Garfunkel's clear harmony. There are times that the two sound like they could have been minstrels, carrying messages of love, longing and rejection to the court of Camelot, and then you hear the rock riff and that vision is scratched! I think the word I am looking for is "timeless." This album delivers on every level and you will really feel like you were there for an historic reunion between two great vocalists. It's just a shame that the reunion feeling didn't last.

4 out of 5 stars Great Live Album...brings you back........2007-03-26

Great music. Great sound. This is definitely an upbeat, happy live album. If you are a fan, this is a must-have. I am not a big fan, and I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Goosebumps!.......2007-03-09

If you like Simon, Garfunkel, or Simon and Garfunkel at all, this CD should be the very first in your collection. Sheer beauty. Not studio quality, (it IS, after all, a live concert) but with such atmosphere, you really don't miss that.

1 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea.......2007-01-16

One good song, of course "The sound of silence", and the studio version is far better than this one. I am not a fan of the genre as you might expect.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music........2006-09-11

Not only a great companion to anyone's Simon and Garfunkel collection, but also a great live CD in its own right, "The Concert in Central Park" is a wonderful and varied collection of songs sung by one of the greatest folk-rock duos of the 20th century.

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, after releasing a series of albums in the 60s and early 70s, broke up to pursue solo careers. For Paul, it was a brilliant move, eventually culminating in a Grammy for his 1986 masterpiece, "Graceland." For Garfunkel, it meant fading from the musical spotlight. That is, until the two reunited for this concert in New York City's "Central Park." The reunion spawned rumors that the duo was "getting back together." Although that wasn't really the case, they still managed to put on an amazing concert, thanks particularly to the energetic crowd and the superb backing band, laying heavy on electric keyboards and steady, no-frills drumwork.

Many of the songs of the set were "greatest hits," of sorts, from the duos early albums. "Sound of Silence," "The Boxer," and many others find their way into the setliest. Particularly of note is the concert opener, "Mrs. Robinson," far more funky and electric than the studio version. Also, the album is packed with many famous hits from Simon's solo years.

If you're already a Paul Simon or Simon and Garfunkel fan, you can't go wrong with this album. The songs sound fresh and fit nicely in the huge live setting. If you're not familiar with the duo, this album is a great place to start given its abundance of hits.

5 out of 5 stars Tha Best!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-17

The whole 3-disc set is so amazing. This is a must-have for any DMB fan. Twenty bucks is worth the money. Anyways the drum solo on two step is the most technical and craziest drum solo ever!!!! It will blow ur mind away!!!! Carter blows the whole song away and takes the spotlight.

4 out of 5 stars Good Concert - Just too many disks!.......2007-01-19

Awesome album with lots of good songs, however if by any chance you don't have your ipod in the car its a pain to find a specific song from the Cds, you have to browse thru 3 disks!!!

5 out of 5 stars Dave Matthews DVD.......2007-01-10

If you're a Dave Matthews Band fan, this is a "must have" incredible DVD. The sound stage whether in pure stereo or 5.1 Dolby Digital puts you in the middle of Central Park. Every song is better than the previous song. There is no getting tired of this DVD. Best drummer, violinist, sax, etc. Pure music enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-01-09

DMB on an incridable show. Three cds that make you think that your money was well spent. Drums, guitars, violins, bass, sax and vocals are a gift to your ears.
** Para os brasileiros***: O CD foi entregue em menos de duas semanas. Vale à pena comprar.

5 out of 5 stars What e Gem.......2006-11-05

By far one of DMB's most incredible performances. The band's sound on this one is unique and the stuff they come up with is mindblowing. Highlights are: Crush, Two Step, Ants Marching and Watchtower. I have to say that the version of 'Crush' is out of this world - I listen to it every day. Your DMB collection is very lacking without this concert, and if you're passionate enough, buy the DVD - you'll be glued to your set for 3 straight hours!

5 out of 5 stars Super Astor.......2007-06-12

This was an icon of the pop culture, why not? of all the culture in general, Piazzolla's greatest concert in a city that's a very crittical about the music, but when was happen, was a boom, and this record show the genious, sensitve, magnificence & a deep humility (as all the greatest) masterpieces for all the music (in special of tango) like Adios Nonino, Lunfardo, Milonga del Angel & Michelangelo was fabulous, i'm sorry that don't get Libertango, VIVA SUPER ASTOR

5 out of 5 stars Haven't tried Piazzolla yet ? Buy this one !.......2001-04-22

I love Piazzolla's music. I own several CDs and I am currently into compositions by his followers. Yet, this CD is the one I always choose to initiate my friends to this wonderful music. It has great selection, it is interpreted with great passion, and it sounds great. Even the part when he talks (briefly) about himself and his music warms my heart everytime. In fact, I am going to listen to my copy as soon as I am done writing this. Enjoy !

5 out of 5 stars The night Tango met with Jazz & Fussion!.......2000-04-26

This is a perfect expample of Piazzola's life-time effort to free Tango from its classic structure and pre-conceived rythm. This superb concert shows what Piazzola was capable of doing with the very popular music of the City of Buenos Aires. This CD offers an excelent recording, nice and emotional communication between Piazzola and the audience, and the selections chosen are among the best of the composer. The material includes the good and long version of "Adios Nonino" (with the piano solo part), impressive and challenging versions of "Verano Porteño", "Milonga del Angel", and "Muerte de Angel" (vintage Piazzola), the expansive music of Concert for Quintet ("Concierto Para Quinteto") and the jazzy sounds of Contrabajismo and Mumuki. Thanks to Piazzola, Tango is more than an exotic night-show for turists in the long nights of Buenos Aires. This is an extraordinary chance for the listener to allow Piazzola to take him to a place where the emotions of Tango meet with Jazz, Fussion, and Classic music. Other related artists: Cacho Tirao, Anibal Troilo, Luis Salinas, and Al Dimeola (accoustic recordings only).

The Central Park concert has the best version of "Adios Nonino" I ever heard, the best version and the most virtuous introduction to both "Mumuki" and "Contra Bajissimo", and you will have the plus that Astor himself will explain you in two minutes what is Tango. As an argentinien I have been listening Piazzola's music since I was a teen and the Central Park Concert (and also the Vienna Concert) are the best of him. Close your eyes and when you will open them everything will be different.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just As Its Title Says: CLASSICS IN AMERICA.......2004-08-19

OK, so all the "great composers" maybe weren't from Austria, Germany, or Italy. This CD, right here, justifies the quite justifable elitest attitude (also known as "Patriotism"). Maybe another title, "America's Greatest Hits" might have been appropriate, but then, a dunce or two would be whining for "A Horse With No Name," so "Classics" is it. Just look at who and what is represented on these cds: George Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" (you might remember THAT if you saw "Fantasia 2000") Leonard Bernstein conducts his own beautiful "Dances From West Side Story" (he also conducted Gershwin). There's John Phillip Sousa's "Stars And Stripes Forever," a piece of music so beautiful, so astoundingly patriotism-inducing that it'd even make a.....democrat stand up with his hand over his heart! The ubquitous (and greatly missed) Bernstein conducts Ives' "Central Park In The Dark," and "The Unanswered Question." And that's just the FIRST CD! CAN you improve on perfection? CD #2 is a resounding YES! Here's Berbstein again conducting Samuel Barber's "Adagio For String," and Aaron Copland's beautiful "Appalachin Spring." And here's where the rest of the cd hits you like an enormous amyl-nitrate rush: Seiji Ozawa conducts the San Francisco Orchestra performing William Russo's unvbelievable "Three Piece For Blues Band And Orchestra." Ozawa, the story goes, enjoyed "going out for a cold one" after orchestra rehearsals, and he was especially was fond of a local blues band, The Seigel-Schwall Band. He commissioned his composer friend, William Russo, to compose something that the Band could could perfom with the orchestra. And I know you're thinking, "OH yeah, Procol Harum Live In Edmonton, 'Conquistador,' yeah." NO: As much as I ADORE Procol Harum, there is NO comparison! The Seigel-Schwall Band was strictly a BLUES band, and Russo - whew! composed three pieces that not only altered, but definitely enhanced the Band's electric blues. Like I'm so fond of saying,"By Alteration, Enhances!" My brother is a classically trained symphonic musician, and one time - wow, 25 years ago - he was playing "Three Pieces" on my battered stereo while I was in the shower. And I couldn't WAIT to "dry off," and run screaming in the romm, "WAHT IS THAT YOU'RE PLAYING?" Trust me on this folks, you won't believe it either - and you'll thank Heaven that it's on a CD, because if it was an album, you'd wear the grroves right out by replaying it over and over. And OLD ON, it ain't finished yet: the remainder of the CD features Arthur Feilder conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra performin 3 of the fantastically-talented but almost unknown, Scott Joplin. You remember that great piano music in the movie,"The Sting?" That was Scott Joplin - and he's represented here with "The Entertainer" (I dare you to keep from tapping your right foot when you listen to this),"The Sugar Cane Rag," and the "Maple Leaf Rag." The cd closes with an undiscovered GEM, excerpts fro Joplin's opera "Tremonshia."
This is pure, undiluted AMERICAN music, people. PLEASE do yourself a favor and put down the metal, the "alt," the rapping, the country 'n western, and even my beloved Rock and Roll for
about 2 and a half hours of some of the most incredible - and not THE LEAST BIT BORING! - Classical Music. Music that AMERICA was responsible for!

5 out of 5 stars Great music & value.......2007-01-09

I got this set to replace my old tape of the Concert in Central Park. Since this set cost less than just the Concert in Central Park CD alone, it's a great value right there. I grew up listening to the Concert in Central Park so I prefer that CD to the 20 Greatest Hits. I like their live sound much better than their studio sound. If you're a fan - get this set.
