Seals & Crofts - Greatest Hits

Editorial Reviews

Although the prime exponents of the '70s California soft rock style were album artists such as America, Bread, and Poco, Seals and Crofts--essentially an AM singles band--have aged even better. The key is in their tight songwriting. "Summer Breeze," "Diamond Girl," and the rest of the hits display an odd, but apt, sense of arrangement and instrumentation--and enough of a rock & roll sensibility to keep their sound from slumping into period piece laid-backism. Case in point: The duo's first band was the Champs, noted for the fake-Latin crudhopper "Tequila." Even so, it's not grit, but ace songcraft that captures the prize here. All of the ace songs are included. --Gavin McNett

5 out of 5 stars solid collection.......2007-04-27

It's true that Seals & Crofts were an underrated band that never got the proper attention they deserved. By "proper" I mean, as another reviewer mentions, avoiding the easy listening tag. There was SO much more to Seals & Crofts than just typical easy listening music.

They were sort of like a blend between Cat Stevens in the vocal department and spiritual side, and Simon and Garfunkel's peaceful atmospheric experiments. For some reason, the music of Seals & Crofts always reminded me of a place faraway, such as another planet and another life. It's hard to explain why I get these feelings from their music, because they aren't a space rock band like Pink Floyd or Rush.

Another feeling this band creates is the one of me growing up in Amish country here in the southern parts of Pennsylvania. Whenever I hear this music, I think about how peaceful the Amish are, and how friendly the music is. A fascination with the outdoors also helps me appreciate the music even more.

This Greatest Hits collection gathers a bunch of their best tunes and puts them on one disc. I'm not kidding- every single song here is a winner. I wonder whatever happened to these guys? I hope we see them again. I also hope some of their albums that were never released on CD will be released soon, such as the Takin' It Easy album. I LOVE that album and wish it was available on a disc.

5 out of 5 stars Seals and Crofts greateat hits, great!.......2007-04-10

This cd bought back so many good memories. Each song is beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection Of Songs!.......2007-03-28

For fans of 60s and 70s music groups, this album is a very worthwhile addition to your collection. It includes so many of the tunes that brought this group to the forefront of North American performers...

4 out of 5 stars Great album - with one glaring omission!.......2007-03-26

This album features some of the duo's true gems. Included are such rarely-heard tracks as "When I Meet Them," "Ruby Jean and Billie Lee" and "East of Ginger Trees," along with the group's staples ("Summer Breeze," "We May Never Pass This Way Again," among others). My one problem with the album is that it doesn't contain "Get Closer." "Get Closer" is equal in quality to all of the songs that are featured on the album. How did the producers miss that one? Just the same, this is a great album that belongs on the shelf of anybody who is interested in 1970s soft rock.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD Seals & Croft Bring Back Memories/Hummingbirds!.......2007-03-22

This gift was a request by my husband. Seals & Croft have always sang sweet harmonies. We played it immediately. I recommend the CD.
Anyone who enjoys the sweet harmonies for the seventies will like Selas & Crofts - Greatest Hits. With spring around the corner we enjoy Hummingbird. I always thought that was my song.

My daughter who is a university student had bought a album cover of Diamond Girl at a thrift store. We all wanted to hear a quality CD. Amazon always delivers.

I'd buy it again.

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Song!.......2006-08-03

This song reminds me so much of when I was a teen, growing up when things weren't so messed up. I remember summer nights with all the kids in the neighborhood having water balloon fights, playing hide and seek, the giant spider webs that you run into at night! And the smell of jasmine in the summer air. Those are the days I go back to everytime I hear this song. Too bad kids today can't grow up the way we did back then! They have no idea what they're missing. Great, great song!!!

5 out of 5 stars There's a NEW Seals & Crofts CD Available!.......2004-12-01

Seals & Crofts have recorded their first album together after a wait of 20 years. It's called 'Traces' and was released in 2004. You can find it at iTunes (download) or CDBaby.com. Unfortunately it is not available at Amazon.com

Here are the details from their homepage (sealsandcrofts.com): "It features new versions of several hits from the 1970's, plus some newer tunes! S & C are in fine voice. Included are a total rearrangement of Hummingbird, Summer Breeze, We May Never Pass This Way Again, and Get Closer (with Dash's daughter Lua and Jimmy's daughter Juliet). Some updated album cuts are added, such as Not Be Found and Euphrates. The album's highlight, however, is the previously unreleased "Change the Copper Into Gold" (inspired by the spiritual odyssey of Dorothy Baker), a mesmerizing song that ranks among Jimmy's best."

I was wondering why most of their albums were never released on CD and again here is an answer from their homepage: "There are still no plans to release any more albums from the 1970's on cd. Only the 'Greatest Hits' and 'Summer Breeze' albums are readily available. Rhino Records, the prolific licensee of the Warners Brothers catalog, had planned a release - but initial plans to issue a multi-disc anthology were scaled back to a single disc, extended hits package that mirrors the old K-Tel 'Seals and Crofts Collection' lp, and add 'Unborn Child', 'Wisdom' and 'First Love'. However, there has been no release date issued for that disc. And so, the wait continues."

Regarding their new album, I like the rearrangements of 'Hummingbird' and 'Diamond Girl' best. And 'Change The Copper Into Gold' is a new gem, but all the tracks are wonderful... like a visit from an old friend. I highly recommend a listen.

Regarding 'Summer Breeze'... I like all the tracks but 'East of Ginger Trees' is my all time favorite. This and the 'Greatest Hits' albums were the only ones released on CD. Unfortunately many fans will never hear most of their other music (which is just as good) until the record companies decide to release it on CD. (I have 6 LPs that still sound great on my turntable. I'd love to hear them on CD!)

5 out of 5 stars Soothing, Uplifting, Beautiful.......2003-12-07

It's quite a mystery to me why only two albums from Seals & Crofts are available on CD (at the current time of this writing): 1972's SUMMER BREEZE, and a greatest hits disc. They have made some wonderful music, and it's quite criminal that their other albums, are either out of print, or on different, hard-to-find formats, like vinyl or 8-track.

Seals & Crofts were a duo who specialized in a mix of soft rock and wistful folk. Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Jim Seals, who is the brother of Dan Seals of England Dan & John Ford Coley (remember them, with their lovely hit "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight"), and mandolinist/backing vocalist Dash Crofts, the duo, along with contemporaries such as James Taylor, America, Cat Stevens and others, created wonderful, soothing folk-rock to heal, soothe, and uplift during times of hardship.

SUMMER BREEZE (1972) is a beautiful collection of folk-rock tunes, with reflective, emotional and poignant lyrics - some of which feature spiritual overtones. In fact, a few of the tracks on here adopt small lyrical passages from the Baha'i scriptures. Not only that, the musicianship, arrangements -- it's all of high caliber, which seem to go unnoticed. Jim Seals also possessed one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. In fact, I always thought he had a voice of an Englishman -- he sounds very British.

"Hummingbird" features a gentle, wispy opening with Jim Seals' lovely voice, which reminds one of a mix between Cat Stevens and Phil Collins, backed by some lovely arpeggiated acoustic passages to create a floating aura, as if one were being 'lifted up' as the Baha'i lyric suggests. The rest of the song is a straightforward, mellow, nicely orchestrated track. Lovely vocal harmonies as well. "Funny Little Man" will remind some of Cat Stevens. Features impressive mandolin playing from Crofts. The title track is a mainstay for good reason. Highly enjoyable - even after more than thirty years after it's release.

"East of Ginger Trees" is a lovely, wispy, and breathtaking number, which nicely blends folk with Indian flavors. Features the tabla, tamboura and other instruments, which appear on the 7/4-ish chorus. The vocal harmonies are particularly touching and nostalgic. "Fiddle In The Sky," like the title implies, is a country-folk/rock song with lovely use of the fiddle. Unbelievably beautiful, and too good for words.

The rest of the album is splendid as well, but not necessarily easy to put into words, just like the aforementioned tracks weren't easy to describe as well.

If you're a fan of Cat Stevens, folk-rock, with touches of other elements, and the like, you should enjoy Seals & Crofts tremendously.

4 out of 5 stars Another Seventies Duo With A big Sound.......2006-10-05

This is another of those '70s groups which all sounded alike. I thought they had recorded "Sweet Surrender" and led CSouthcott astray back in the past by suggesting such. He didn't look very far. Diamond Girl was their best, in my opinion, but 'We May Never Pass This Way Again' and 'Summer Breeze' are what gets played today. I wish someone would resurrect 'Diamond Girl" just once.

5 out of 5 stars memories.......2005-07-30

This is just the best music and memories of the best times of my life. My daughter was named after the song Jessica, and I could not find the song anywhere so she has never heard it. 24 years old and she will now get to hear where her name came from. This is something everyone who grew up in the 70's should have, and take out and listen to when you need to smile.

5 out of 5 stars About time..........2005-06-29

Like many I owned this in Vinyl and was amazed it took so long To come out.
And to those who said they found this album a little bit sappy, I say "So the hell what." Everything in that era was sappy and if your worried that a little sappiness may alter your manhood then I recommend against the purchase of this Cd.
But if you want to listen to something thats gonna make you feel pretty damn good this is it.
S&C have a well blended album here. The well known and recognized "Diamond girl" followed by "Ruby jean and Billy Lee"leads it off.
Both were big hits and still sound good.
"Intone my servant" follows and though not a hit you'll wonder why. like all the others a beautifully uplifting harmonic piece.
"We may never pass this way again" another hit shows once again how S&C can change a beautifull melody and lift your soul right out of your body and make it fly.
"Nine houses" starts off kinda odd (The song has a mid east flare to it) but hear it out. Vocals will come in lator and pick it up.
"Standing on a mountain top" by far is one of my favorites a great countryish sound and a really great sounding guitar in this one that'll make you feel like dancing and singing to it.
"It's gonna come down on you" a minor hit shoulda been "major" starts off mellow and beautifull and like most of there songs in this album just lifts you right up with an increase in tempo.
"Jessica" has got to be the most sappy song of the bunch. But, Hey! my niece's name is "Jessica and It was once a favorite of mine and still is a beautifull song.
""Dust on my saddle" A country diddy that you may find yourself singing word for word after some time.
"Wisdom" is the only song I never listen to its a jazzy piece and I dont care for Jazz much but even I gotta admit they do show off their talent on the horns.
In short this is a great album from beginning to end (Which is rare to find nowadays) and really represents the times in which it was written (Early 70's)
ENJOY

2 out of 5 stars a great duo, but they were really off their game here.......2005-05-20

I think Seals & Crofts are a really underappreciated duo who made a lot of great music over the course of their initial run from 1969-1980. However, 1973's "Diamond Girl" is a painfully weak record which, ironically, was also their highest charting album in the US, peaking at #4--these two things don't sit together well, and as a result, it becomes easy to understand why many people would trash the group. It does start off great with the somewhat jazzy title track which was a big hit, and alas, has received an endless amount of airplay over the years, so it's likely that you may be rather sick of it. "We May Never Pass This Way (Again)" certainly displays songwriting craft and also has some touching sentimentality, but it's sickly-sweet and the merciless amount of airplay it's received over the years doesn't entirely help. "Ruby Jean And Billie Lee", written for the duo's wives who are featured on the back cover, is an overwrought ballad with some really clumsy and cringe-worthy turns of phrase. "Nine Houses" is one of their characteristic epic tributes to the Baha'i faith, and despite the accomplished musicianship, it feels thrown together and incoherent, failing to build up momentum, and it starts to really drag over the course of its 7-minute length. "Jessica" is a sickly-sweet pop tune that also suffers from some corny melodicism as well as the guitar + mandolin breaks that interrupt the flow of the song. "Standin' On A Mountain Top" and "Dust On My Saddle" are both tracks that James Seals had written in the '60s, and they sure do sound like they were hauled out in desperation as if the duo hadn't be able to come up with enough strong new material--the former is a generic bluesy rocker, and the latter is country-western fluff with silly 'spoken' sections and an overly-repeated chorus. The album closing instrumental "Wisdom", which sounds like something you're likely to hear in a driver's education feature from the early '70s, has James Seals demonstrating his technical proficiency on the saxophone, but his playing rambles on as if he was more interested in merely showing off than anything else. On the more positive side, "Intone My Servant" does have some catchiness and a nice bluesy feel on the chorus, and the ballad "It's Gonna Come Down (On You)" is okay, although it feels underdeveloped. All that said, this is NOT the album to use if you're trying to demonstrate the excellence that this duo frequently offered--writer's block seems to have been the key problem, but the strange thing is that their 1976 masterpiece album "Get Closer" contains 3 songs that are copyrighted no later than 1972, so it's a mystery why Seals would haul out a track like "Dust On My Saddle" when he had a gem like "Don't Fail" waiting in the wings. Even with the extremely low list price of $6.98 that this CD is currently going for, the album is so weak and lacking standout songs that it's really not the bargain you may initially think it is; apart from the title track, there's not a single track on the whole damn album that's truly a gem--you keep hoping with each passing song that there must be at least a gem or two, but to no avail. I do want to add though that one can't help but wonder if healthy sales of this CD would help to FINALLY spur Rhino to release other Seals & Crofts albums on CD which remain woefully unavailable. Still, "Diamond Girl" is a terrible introduction to their work and should really only be sought out by Seals & Crofts' biggest fans.

4 out of 5 stars Vintage folk-rock tunes clearly rooted to the mid-70s .......2005-05-06

Diamond Girl" is a vintage collection of folk-rock tunes clearly rooted to the mid-70s and one of the finer albums to emerge from that cluttered genre. Though Seals and Crofts were a duo, their fine-honed sound would not have caught the public's ear without the able assistance of producer Louie Shelton, who really shaped and smoothed their sound, and multi-instrumentalist Jim Lichtig, who shares writing credits for several Seals and Crofts' songs. A cast of fine session musicians contribute as well, and the set.

I would say that nearly all of us who listened to the radio back when this CD was popular will always recognize the opening chords of Diamond Girl within a millisecond and drew comfort and permission from the philosophy in We May Never Pass This Way (Again). This CD has other jewels as well, Nine Houses, Jessica, and Wisdom, and all in all contains more Baha'i themes than some find comfortable. A pair of older tracks, such as Dust on My Saddle and Standin' on a Mountain Top, both penned before there was a Seals and Crofts, do not hold up as well.

Note that this CD is not actually a Warner Brothers release, which may bode well for those, like myself, hoping to see more of this duo's catalog appear on CD. After their antiabortion stance on a later recording, "Unborn Child," the band's popularity began to wane and they found themselves being judged more on politics than music.

3 out of 5 stars Where's the other hits?.......2004-02-18

Yes, Dan Seals is fantastic! Yes, he should of had many more hits, but one major song is misssing... Meet Me in Montana. Look at his other C.D. you'll find ALL the good ones there.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2000-01-02

One word describes Dan Seals: Amazing! His songs are so full of emotion and are absolutely touching. He sings real, traditional country music, which is refreshing to hear in an age where real, true country music has almost been replaced by "crossover" country-pop music. My favorite songs on the album were "Everything That Glitters Is Not Gold", "Love On Arrival", and "Big Wheels In The Moonlight." However, the whole record was excellent and VERY enjoyable. I recommend this to anyone who's a fan of country music, like myself! Please buy it today, you will not regret it!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Dan Seals.......2007-07-24

A lot of good songs from Dan Seals, his older songs too.
My 10 year old son likes to dance to his music.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Dan Seals.......2007-01-04

This is a really super great CD with C&W music of the recent past. Dan Seals is one of the great performers of recent times.

5 out of 5 stars Aptly titled.......2007-01-03

My only problem with this CD is that it may not stand up to the constant wear that it gets. The CD is wonderful. I don't understand why this man is not up there with George, Garth and Allan, but if quality of voice, delivery and true talent count for anything, this is one album anyone will love.

5 out of 5 stars good one.......2006-06-03

This is one of the best albums you'll ever listen to. It brought back memories of songs I used to love when I was a kid, such as "Everybody's Dreamgirl," "Bop," and "After You." It contains many of Dan's best songs, and I guarantee you will like it. I enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2000-01-01

Wow! This album is terrific! I always did like Dan Seals's songs "Everything That Glitters Is Not Gold", "One Friend", and "Three Time Loser". I remember listening to them when I was a child. Those were my three favorite songs on the album, but the whole album was fantastic! He sings with feeling and you can tell that it's from the heart and that he really means the words he's singing. He can sing sad songs about losing love and romance ("Three Time Loser", "Everything That Glitters"), he can sing about his memories of his first car ("My Old Yellow Car"), and he can sing upbeat songs about wanting to dance all night ("Bop"). I highly recommend this album if you are a country music fan. This is country music the way it was meant to be sung. You won't regret buying this album!
