A judiciously-selected two-CD compendium of Peter Gabriel's finest moments, Hit offers a far more generous windfall than can be found on the only previous Peter Gabriel best-of selection, the 1990 Shaking the Tree. The devil, after all, is in the detail, particularly on the second disc (self-deprecatingly entitled Miss), which really traverses the whole gamut of Peter Gabriel's globally-visioned artistry. It includes recent soundtrack work (the haunting "Cloudless" from Long Walk Home: Music from the Rabbit-Proof Fence), material from 2002's sterling Up ("Signal To Noise", featuring a compelling vocal from the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and some ominous string arrangements, really does sound like a thinking man's Massive Attack) and goes right back to that fourth album when marrying the reticence of cold, synthesised new wave with insistent African percussion seemed like a good idea (it was). The first disc--including the MTV smash "Sledgehammer", anti-apartheid war cry "Biko", "Big Time" (interesting how the styles of Gabriel and his former group Genesis seem to converge at this time) and "Games Without Frontiers"--really speaks for itself, although with hindsight it seems the single-buying public-at-large had a particular taste for a certain kind of Peter Gabriel record. Universally excellent throughout, the collection is rendered even more desirable by the inclusion of three previously unreleased tracks: a live rendition of "Downside Up", a shorter version of "Blood of Eden" and "Burn You Up, Burn You Down", latterly included on a video game and initially earmarked for the Up album but jettisoned at the last minute. --Kevin Maidment

Still as good as when they were young.......2007-07-07
I found myself remembering the words to most of the songs, that I thought I had forgotten. You don't forget, the words are just tucked away. They had a couple of new band members but the rest were the good ol' guys we remember. If you don't get to see them, this CD will be the next best thing. You will really enjoy listening to the songs on this CD.
After buying this, go check out "ToTo". They were the opening Band for Three Dog Night!!!

Bobby Darin was one of the most personally complex and unpredictable artists of the rock era. Indeed, it's hard to find another major artist who reinvented himself with the deceptive ease and overwhelming success chronicled on this 20-track highlight disc. After scoring three lively and considerable Top 10 successes in the space of a year in the late 1950s ("Splish Splash," "Queen of the Hop," "Dream Lover"), Darin traded in his teen idol sweater 'n' slacks for a tux and tie (evidence suggests he considered rock a passing fad!) and went gunning for Sinatra and the Rat Pack. The immediate results were the Grammy-winning No. 1 legend "Mack the Knife" (adapted from Kurt Weill's "Moritat" in The Threepenny Opera) and the enduring, French-inspired Top 10 hit "Beyond the Sea." If Darin spent the early '60s alternately goosing standards from the American songbook ("Clementine," "Bill Bailey," "Lazy River," "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby," etc.) and mending a few rock-pop fences ("Multiplication," "Things"), he still had another surprise in store. His Top 10 take on Tim Hardin's dolorous "If I Were a Carpenter" cast him all too convincingly as conscientious '60s folkie. Other highlights here include his irresistible, swinging take on the lyrically bleak "Artificial Flowers" and his successful, self-penned nods to the '60s Nashville sound, "You're the Reason I'm Living" and "18 Yellow Roses." Darin was considerably more than the first postmodern lounge Revivalist, and herein lies the evidence. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description

PETER GABRIEL DARED TO BE DIFFERENT MUSICALLY, ON HIS TERMS AND LEFT HIS MARK IN ROCK HISTORY BECAUSE OF IT!.......2007-07-07
PETER GABRIEL will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for singing some of Rock's all-time greatest anthems as the frontman for the legendary band GENESIS. However, his stint with GENESIS would not last very long. GABRIEL would soon quit the band GENESIS favoring and venturing out on his own with a solo career that would definitely prove successful. As a successful solo artist, GABRIEL will also forever be remembered for composing and recording some of the 80's all-time greatest Rock anthems ever. With this in mind, GABRIEL would record many great hit songs and albums as a successful solo artist during the period from the 1977-2003 years. In my opinion, in 1986, GABRIEL would deliver to Rock n' Roll one of the 80's unforgettable all-time greatest anthems ever. I'm talking about the legendary Rocker "Sledgehammer" released in 1986. What ROBERT PALMER did in 1985 with his legendary 80's Rock anthem "Addicted To Love," PETER GABRIEL would do the exact same thing with "Sledgehammer" in 1986. Which now brings me to the legendary compilation album I'm about to review for all of you today. "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" chronicles and highlights all of the great hit songs that PETER GABRIEL composed and recorded during the 1977-2003 period. In my opinion, this legendary compilation is without a doubt, a true testament of the brilliance and musical creativity of a masterminded genius. This legendary compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary artist that was truly indeed, far ahead of his time. This is the tales in the life of MR. PETER GABRIEL, his music is his story that speaks for itself.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of PETER GABRIEL to speak for itself and back it up musically as he originally truly intended for it to be. DISC ONE of "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" begins with the soothing synthesized and acoustic turned mild Rocker "Solsbury Hill," the forever GABRIEL stamped trademark 80's anthem "Shock The Monkey," the forever GABRIEL stamped trademark 80's Rock anthem "Sledgehammer," the beautifully slow heavenly and uplifting synthesized number "Don't Give Up," the groundbreaking synthesized mild Rocker "Games Without Frontiers," the danceable synthesized mild Rocker "Big Time," the bass pounding synthesized Rocker "Burn You Up, Burn You Down," the incredible bass pounding synthesized Rocker "Growing Up," the amazing synthesized slow/medium Rocker "Digging In The Dirt," the beautifully slow and well arranged synthesized number "Blood Of Eden," the powerfully mild and synthesized slow masterpiece "More Than This," this is one of GABRIEL'S many great experimental songs that succeeded, "Biko," the breathtaking synthesized Rocker "Steam," the beautifully slow turned medium/fast and well arranged 80's Rock anthem, "Red Rain" and the beautifully slow number with the accompaniment of the piano, "Here Comes The Flood." END OF DISC ONE.
DISC TWO takes right where DISC ONE left off with the incredibly sounding and synthesized slow song "San Jacinto," the fantastic synthesized, bass pounding Progressive Rocker "I Don't Remember," another great GABRIEL experimental song that was successful, "The Rhythm Of The Heat," the beautifully slow/medium smooth song "Loved To Be Loved," the slow synthesized number turned into a mild danceable Rocker "I Grieve," the incredibly sounding synthesized number "Family Snapshot," the slow synthesized "In Your Eyes," another beautiful slow song with the piano arrangement, "The Drop," the incredibly sounding synthesized Progressive rocker "The Tower That Ate People," the slow and smooth bass pounding and synthesized number "Lovetown," another beautifully slow song with the synthesizer and piano, "Father, Son," the name of this song is self explanatory and says it all, "Signal To Noise," the incredible live recording sung with Melanie Gabriel, "Downside Up" and the smooth synthesized and acoustic mild song "Cloudless." END OF DISC TWO. May I also add that PETER GABRIEL'S voice was perfect and on fire while laying down the vocal tracks for all of these hit songs. In my opinion, listening to all of GABRIEL'S songs makes me wonder why he ever left GENESIS. GENESIS' music sounds very similar to GABRIEL'S. Even PHIL COLLINS' solo recordings sound like GENESIS and GABRIEL'S. Whatever the reason may be, all of their music sounds great.
In my opinion, this music collection or at least on DISC TWO, this type of music might not go well with the majority of the youth today, I MAY BE WRONG. There are great hit songs on this legendary album worthy of checking out. If you like GENESIS or PHIL COLLINS, you can definitely relate to and get into the sounds and music of PETER GABRIEL. I would like to recommend purchasing this 2-CD compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. In doing this, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal PETER GABRIEL music collection. You can do all of your album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.
In closing, PETER GABRIEL has successfully continued in recording and releasing new albums along with touring and performing to sell-out audiences the world over up to this very day. In my opinion, Rock n' Roll needs someone like PETER GABRIEL to come up with mindblowing sounds and music that is new, fresh and original to floor his fans and audiences with. What I admire about PETER GABRIEL is that he doesn't copy anyone else's music, his music has and always will be different and original. Knowing this, GABRIEL'S musical creativity formula has proven to be successful and I know for fact that PETER GABRIEL is here to stay and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I also get the feeling that GABRIEL still feels that he truly needs to give and deliver more incredible creative music to the whole world. PETER GABRIEL has forever left his place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and his many contributions, accomplishments and achievements will never be forgotten or denied. There will also be many new tales and stories in the GABRIEL legend and legacy that will still need to be written in pages and chapters. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further more about it at a later date. So here's to you PETER. Thanks for the many great memories and moments with many more still yet to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. PETER GABRIEL RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

One Of The Great Gifted Artists Of Our Times.......2007-03-24
There are always songs you would like to see on a Hits package and some that could be jettisoned and this album is no exception. I cannot understand why SHAKING THE TREE is not included. This is a song he co-wrote with Youssou N'Dour and there is a remastered version on his earlier hits album, also called Shaking The tree. It is a wonderful song in praise of Women with a gentle voal by Gabriel. Must be a legal reason or maybe a falling out with Youssou. One of his classic songs: IN YOUR EYES is buried on the MISS side and that is on the USA version. It is not even included on the European version. That is an amazing oversight. Also songs like LOVE TO BE LOVED from US is reather boring and does not belong here. He could have included from the same album, KISS THAT FROG, COME TALK TO ME or SECRET WORLD, especially the live version which way surpasses the studio version. Also SKY BLUE or an edited version of THE BARRY WILLIAMS SHOW from UP might have been a better selection than I GRIEVE. It would have been great to merge SKY BLUE and CLOUDLESS together for one magnificent closing track. The really weird THE TOWER THAT ATE PEOPLE, LOVETOWN and THE DROP could also have been left off so earlier PG material could have been presented. INTRUDER is not included and nothing from Peter Gabriel 2, although DIY is on the European version as is NO SELF CONTROL and I HAVE THE TOUCH. There are cut versions of some songs which actually help in the case of BLOOD OF EDEN, GROWING UP and MORE THAN THIS. Maybe STEAM could have been edited also as it is on the long side. Hopefully an anthology is on the way to encompass all relevant Peter Gabriel tracks.
BAD Remaster.......2007-02-17
Friggin' HORRIBLE remaster job. I can compare sledgehammer from this set and from "So" side by side and this set's version sounds awful. The mastering guy cranked all of the mid-range and treble up way too high and ruined almost every song on here. There is a major peak from 2Khz-6Khz. I get a headache after about 10 minutes of listening. Extremely harsh sounding vs. the softer orignal recording.
What a dissappointment. This thing will sit on the shelf. I have had this bad experience with more than a few remasters. If you are any type of audiophile, skip this and try to find the originals. Bummer.
Good Music.......2007-01-04

Hey not "98.6" but worth owning!.......2007-06-24
It is inexcusable that the powers that be behind the CD release of "One Hit Wonders" could take a 5 Star idea and turn it into ***.
The first and not as egregious as the second error is the total playing time. With a myriad of great tunes left off the release they could have given 12-14 tracks. To think a CD holds 80 minutes and not even half is full!
As two other fine reviews stated previously (M.Doane and Jonathan Schult) the legendary "One Tin Soldier (The Legend Of Billy Jack)" by Coven is not the version the listener is in tune with. It is both misleading and disgraceful.
This sort of thing was taken one step further frequently in Europe in the late 1960's and early 1970's by offering discount compilation of hits but the original recordings were not used. Hired studio musicians performed the tunes!
The majority of news here is good. "Reflections Of My Life - The Marmalade" is one of the finest and most intense lyrical compositions ever. You could make a case that as long as its contents are found here anything else is gravy.
"Come On Down To My Boat" - Every Mother's Son reminds us older folks of the great summers past. The first note takes you back to a simpler world. We didn't have the internet or even calculators but we did have some amazing rock and roll radio.
"98.6" - Keith may be the most underrated tune on the CD. Although simplistic in its arrangement, something sticks in the brain from the initial listening.
"Monster Mash" - Bobby Pickett is a staple of every Halloween. People were laughing then and still are now, but we are still enjoying the song.
Ten solid tracks and only a couple of gripes. Not bad.
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

ORIGINAL CASTE's .......2006-08-06
At first, they released two singles through DOT records, with little success. In 1969,they signed contract with the T.A. Records division of Bell Records. The single "ONE TIN SOLDIER"[composed by Lambert/Potter] and the album of same title were released. It has become a highly coveted collector's item.
They were produced by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter who became the celebrated lead songwriters/producers at Dunhill Records as they churned out hit after charting hit with various recording artists in the late 60's and throughout the first half of the 70's decade. The ORIGINAL CASTE's group leader, Bruce composed several excellent and fully loaded pop songs found on their debut album.
Title song "One Tin Soldier"[Bell/TA-186] was more popular in U.S.A.(No.34/Billboard Chart; 1969)than their next single "Mr. Monday", yet, both hit #1 in their native Canada and Japan, respectively. Many cover versions of "One Tin Soldier" had been issued subsequently. Especially, Coven made this tune appear to the US charts four times and it was used for the Original Sound Track of the Warner's Movie named "Billy Jack". The music director of this movie's soundtrack wanted to use the original version by THE ORIGINAL CASTE, but the episode was that The Coven, signed band of The Warner Records, was in haste chosen because of the movie and record company's relationship.
Bruce, Dixie & The ORIGINAL CASTE's recording era/career continued in various forms as a group and solo[Dixie]recordings for about eight years[1968-74]and the final album "Back Home"[issued 1974] was left after their original member's group were dissolved in 1972. Dixie & Bruce continued to tour with various new members until 1980.
Dixie Lee lives in British Columbia, state of Canada. Bruce resides in Sun Valley, Idaho, and keeps his music career alive by playing his inspiring folk music in local concerts, issuing his independent label recordings and also tours with an all new line up of THE ORIGINAL CASTE, circa 2005. In 2000 he discovered singer Cheryl Morrell, which led to reforming The Original Caste along with long time Original Caste bandmate Gary Carlson.
A Japanese Import reissue Cd of the ORIGINAL CASTE's first album, "ONE TIN SOLDIER", is available at www.amazon.com - I hope this finally clears up all the confusion.

Album Description
With so many labels and so many CD's, you'd think it would be easy to find all the top hits from the fabulous 50's. Not so! To remedy this musical misfortune, Hit Parade Records inaugurates their new year-by-year CD series with Hard To Find Jukebox Classics 1956. This exciting, audiophile-quality disc is bulging with 24 classic pop, vocal group, folk, and early rock 'n' roll hits. All these platters made the Top 40 - sixteen hit the Top 10, three made it all the way to #1 - but just try and find these terrific songs today!Hard To Find Jukebox Classics 1956 includes eight songs never available on CD till now, including Fess Parker's "Wringle Wrangle" (#12), Dorothy Collins' "My Boy - Flat Top" (#15), and the stereo single version of Morris Stoloff's #1 smash, "Moonglow & Theme from 'Picnic'." Others, like the Cheers' tragicomic "Black Denim Trousers" (featuring Bert Convey) or Tony Bennett's rapturous "Can You Find It In Your Heart " are very difficult - if not impossible - to find on CD these days.

A veritable smorgasbord of hard to find mid-fifties pop favorites.......2007-01-25
"Hard to Find Jukebox Classics 1956" features hits by some of the premiere vocalists in American popular music. Enjoy once again Vic Damone's splendid recording of "On The Street Where You Live" from "My Fair Lady". That one always sends chills up and down my spine! One of the big hits of 1956 was Bing Crosby's duet with Grace Kelly. "True Love", featured in the motion picture "High Society", went all the way to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of that year. I was also extremely pleased to find a pair of hits by Tony Bennett that have been out-of-print and virtually impossible to find for decades. "Can You Find It In Your Heart" and "From The Candy Store On The Corner To The Chapel On The Hill" were both big sellers that year. If you enjoy that rockabilly sound then Chuck Miller's Top Ten smash "The House of Blue Lights" will certainly float your boat. And fans of group harmony will appreciate tunes like Somethin' Smith and the Redheads recording of "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie" or the Highlights "City Of Angels". For me, perhaps the biggest surprise in this collection was the remarkable Jerry Lewis recording (yes, that Jerry Lewis)of Al Jolson's 1918 hit "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody". I cannot imagine that Lewis was much of a singer, but his voice proved to be perfect for that song. While I have always been aware that this tune hit the Top Ten back in '56 I had never heard the song before nor had I ever seen the 45 rpm record.
I could go on and on but suffice to say that if this is your kind of music then you should grab this one immediately. It has been my experience that collections like this tend to have a fairly short shelf life so if you procrastinate you may miss out. "Hard to Find Jukebox Classics 1956" features a very informative 12 page booklet featuring photos and biographical information on many of these artists. Simply stated, this disc is a joy to listen to. Very highly recommended!!!

Boot stompin to a new level.......2007-07-18
As far as the album goes...it's heavy. A lot more funk and soul which I like and it caters to Jesse Wagner's monster soulful vocals. A few instrumental tracks like Rhythm & Light are solid and just make you nod your head. "Free Time" is a single waiting in line to get on mainstream radio. It's addictive and it's got a story every man can relate to.
I love the album but I do miss the old "tube feel" the old records had in their production. But most people don't like that (or don't appreciate it). I also was hoping for a few more sing-a-long chorus lines that they are so famous for.
Overall this record is solid. Support the Aggrolites. They are spitting out some original tunes with some very talented musicians.
Great summer album.......2007-07-14
Will put a smile on your face.......2007-06-11
Nevermind the color of their skin. Yeah, they are white. But these guys are veterans to the modern day reggae/ska scene. Now, on to the album itself...
Self described as "Dirty Reggae," The Aggrolites definately know how to stir up some incredibly catchy sing-along tunes. This album has, for the most part, fantastic song after fantastic song. Highlights include "Faster Bullet," "Reconcile;" with it's gospel-esque lyrics, "Lets Pack Our Bags;" a perfect summertime reggae tune that lifts you up into somewhere else, and of course "Free Time." The latter song is the bands first single of this album, which you may or may not have heard on your local radio.
This is not to say that the rest of the songs are bad. All of the songs on this disc are great - It's just that some are a bit catchier than others. Point being, get this album. Click the order button, or go out to your local record store and buy it. Hell, download it off Itunes if you have given in to the new Ipod trend. This is a great album that deserves to be listened to fans of any type of music.
