Amazon.com essential recording
Randy Newman's 1974 concept album explores the modern contradictions and early-20th-century history of the Deep South with his bracing mix of irony, affection, and empathy for twisted psyches and hungry, venal dreams. What sounds like Southern gothic material is a virtuosic balancing act between light comedy and political broadside, shivering with moments of unexpected pathos: "Birmingham" is a booster anthem, "A Wedding in Cherokee County" a tableau of dysfunctional romance at once grotesque and touching, "Guilty" a probing confession of addiction, and "Louisiana 1927" a Copelandesque tragedy of the ravages of that year's historic flood. Capping it all is his classic, double-edged indictment of racism, "Rednecks," which turns the knife back on smug outsiders blind to their own prejudices. Rhino's 2002 remixed, expanded reissue caps the initial disc with a demo version of the ballad "Maria" and includes a fascinating salvaged-from-the-vaults second disc dubbed "Johnny Cutler's Birthday" (the working title for the project), featuring Newman sketching the finished album through songs and commentary. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars with a song in my heart/pal joey sound tracks.......2007-03-31

I actually was so pleased to see a CD available because I have been longing for the movie "with a song in my heart" to become available on VHS and then on DVD, and it never has, so now at least I can enjoy the songs from the movie. The cast track from Pal Joey was just an added bonus.

5 out of 5 stars With A Song In My Heart CD.......2007-03-19

I saw the film, "With A Song In My Heart" when I was twelve or thirteen years old and have wanted the sound track for many years. As an impressionable teenager in the 1950s, I have collected over time many of the films from that time on VHS or DVD, to satisfy my memories of the period. I regret that this particular film is not available on VHS or DVD, but, this CD is the next best choice. It is really enjoyable to hear the richness and depth of the voice of Jane Froman, who was one of the best singers of the time. I can still recall many scenes from the film and this CD revives the memories so well.

4 out of 5 stars A Jane Froman double feature........2006-09-16

This DRG CD pairs two recordings starring Jane Froman.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART

Susan Hayward played Jane Froman in the film but Froman herself dubbed the vocals. This album of songs was originally issued as a 10" Lp. None of the tracks are taken from the film: They are all studio re-recordings. Later, Capitol re-released it as a 12" LP with two extra songs added. It is that expanded [program included here. Froman is in great voice, though the orchestrations are overly lush and string heavy. Still, the songs include such standards as "It's a Good Day", "Get Happy", and "Embraceable You" making for an enjoyable mini-concert.

PAL JOEY

Capitol's cast album of the 1952 revival has long been a collector's item. The original Lp was deleted in 1960 and did not resurface until Broadway Angel released it on CD (briefly) in 1993. As the stars of the revival Harold Lang and Vivienne Segal had already made a studio cast album for Columbia - an album that helped inspire the revival - they were unable to re-record their songs for Capitol, and the label turned to Jane Froman and Dick beavers to fill in. The revised orchestrations sound dated now, but here is a chance to hear Elaine Stritch singing "Zip" and to enjoy the lusty voice of Helen Gallagher early in her career.

In the end it's the WITH A SONG IN MY HEART selections (making their debut on CD here) that make this CD worthwhile. For PAL JOEY the studio recording (available from SONY) is preferable, however if one is so inclined you can assemble your own cast album of the '52 revival by combining tracks from both releases.

4 out of 5 stars "Pal Joey's" Pal.......2006-07-30

While the legubrious and over-orchestrated songs from the film "With a Song in My Heart" are typical of their era (and Jane Froman's stilted renditions are what once stood for emoting) the "Pal Joey" cast recording is an absolute delight. The orchestrations are bouncy and jazzy in a way that has long been forgotten, and the performances (except for the aforementioned Ms. Froman, whose Vulgnarian renditions are at times quite disconcerting, and who hits the sonic notes like lazer beems but misses the emotional ones by a country mile) are exceptional. Helen Gallagher deserved her Tony from the evidence of this recording, with Elaine Stritch not far behind her. But the overall impact surpasses any recording of "Joey" including the historic one that lead to this revival. There's energy, intensity and a whole lot of fantastic song writing (leave it to to Rogers and Hart) to satisfy any musical theater fan. A must have for anyone who loves "Old Broadway."

4 out of 5 stars another great twofer from DRG.......2004-01-21

Jane Froman was one of the top vocalists of her era. Froman's greatness is celebrated in this new 2-on-1 album, which comprises the film soundtrack of WITH A SONG IN MY HEART as well as the 1952 Broadway revival cast album of PAL JOEY.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART was the life story of Jane Froman, with the lovely Susan Hayward in the lead role. Froman herself supplied the singing for the film. Numbers include "It's a Good Day", the bittersweet and humorous "They're Either Too Young or Too Old", "Blue Moon", "Get Happy", "Tea for Two" and "I'm Thru with Love".

The 1952 Broadway revival of PAL JOEY was the result of the huge success of a studio album released by Columbia the year before (which featured Vivienne Segal reprising her original role of Vera and Harold Lang as Joey). Segal and Lang headlined the new revival with Helen Gallagher (SWEET CHARITY, HAZEL FLAGG) as Gladys Bumps and Elaine Stritch (ON YOUR TOES, GOLDILOCKS) as reporter Melba Snyder.

Having already recorded their roles for the Columbia album, Segal and Lang saw little need in re-recording them for the revival album on the Capitol label. Instead, the roles of Vera and Joey were covered by Jane Froman and Dick Beavers.

The cast album suffers on many levels. First, the absence of Segal and Lang is quite distracting, and secondly the new Overture can't even compare with the scintillanting original.

The Columbia studio album is the version to buy in addition to this, though both albums have their strong and weak points. As per usual, Elaine Stritch brings her impressive and formidable comic timing to the fore in the show-stopping "Zip", and Helen Gallagher's silvery voice is perfect for "That Terrific Rainbow".

A fine addition to your collection. [DRG 19054]

5 out of 5 stars Good Old Boys............2007-07-17

I bought GOOD OLD BOYS when it first came out, being a fan from
hearing Newman's SAIL AWAY. This record helped me get through the
1970's (and beyond) when I moved back to the South. It helped to
keep things in perspective! One of my favorites of all time.

Really, I've turned more folks onto GOOD OLD BOYS. While a FEW didn't
GET IT, most folks were blown away by it. I've had it on record,
8-track, cassette, and now CD.

MARIE is one of the most tender songs ever written. LOUISIANA told of
the BIG STORM that wiped out the state in the 1930's - but this song
was a HEADS UP to all who listened - even more pointed post-Katrina.
GOOD OLD BOYS lays out the NORTH VS SOUTH (RACIST vs ENLIGHTENED) debate
with a clarity that no one would dare attempt to present except Newman.
A Wedding in Cherokee County is just plain GREAT! Back On My Feet Again
is one of my favorites due to it's EASTERN SHORE reference (my home).
I could go on about every song on this CD but I won't bore you. Just
go buy it and hear it for yourself - a true masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars I'm recovering.......2007-05-13

"Good Old Boys" is a classic album. I lost EVERTHING due to the flooding caused by the inadequate levees built by the Corpse of Engineers. Katrina took everything I owned, including this album. I was very satisfied that Amazon could replace it.

5 out of 5 stars an all-time classic........2006-10-25

i have heard at least 7,000 albums in the course of life's mad journey, and this easily belongs in my favorite top 20. literate songwriting that few can match, along with superlative musical craftmanship, make this an all-time classic that belongs in every rock/pop music collection.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Randy Album........2006-07-04

I love this album, it's so great! Every song is just to die for! As a song writer and piano player/drummer I find the music to be in good taste as well. I can't stop listening to it! If it weren't for this album I probly wouldn't like Randy at all, but now I'm nuts for him! I can't say enough about it. Go listen to it!

i wasn't so familiar with randy newman's work except of "i love LA" so that when i bought that record, i found myself completely amazed by the whole thing, this is pop but this is also blues, and the way he sings the blues is quite rare, i mean the intention is really there, his spirit is totally dedicated to the blues and his melodies are so simple and full of sadness and makes you want to love and think about a whole spectrum of things, of course "marie" is incredible but my favorite is "guilty", love the lyrics too: "it takes a whole lotta medecine to believe that i'm somebody else", america should be proud of randy newman, i mean in the white musicians, i simply don't know anybody as good as him in the us. oh i mean almost cause elvis, buddy holly, jerry lee...

5 out of 5 stars My 15 Seconds of Fame.......2006-12-29

I've always loved this recording-- I had it on vinyl and then recorded it to cassette tape and listened to it in my car for years until cars went to CD players, then I bought the CD. But that's just the first half of my back story.

In October, Randy came to my hometown to play two concerts. My wife and I had tickets to the second show. We arrived early and ate dinner at a restaurant adjacent to the theatre. Soon after we arrived, a whitish-haired gentleman in jeans and a young woman sat down at the next table. "Psst!" I whispered to my wife, "That's Randy Newman!" I held off accosting him until he finished his dinner, but to get ready, I wrote a request on a napkin (this is standard Louisiana practice at piano bars). I introduced myself and made my request. I also reminisced about a show he did at the New Orleans Jazz Festival about 10 years ago. He remembered singing "Louisiana 1927" and "Rider in the Rain" in the rain that day. He gave me an autograph and said he'd try to play my request.

The show lasted about two hours and near the end, Randy introduced a request "from my friend, Dave Zimmerman". Wow! He proceeded to mention jokingly how the song would "break up the flow of the concert", but that he'd play it anyway. He then explained how the song was written about Albania, but that he had to change the setting to an southern US county for the American market. The song is "Wedding in Cherokee County" and it's on "Good Old Boys", Randy Newman's best album in an illustrious career as singer and composer.

The title comes from a line in the CD's opening and most controversial song "Rednecks", which features repeated use of the N word as he decries both Southern and Northern racism. "Louisiana 1927", the story of the Great Flood of that year, has become the unofficial second anthem of my state (after "You Are My Sunshine", which was written by a former governor) after the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Newman includes Huey Long's campaign song, "Every Man a King", and his own version of Long's life in "Kingfish". "Birmingham" is a gritty tribute to that Alabama industrial town. "Marie" and "Guilty" are just too beautiful to convey in words. "Naked Man" and "Back on My Feet Again" are observant and funny. Every song is a gem. I highly recommend this album to everyone. Randy's movie music for Pixar (Toy Story, Monsters Inc, etc.) is great and has gained him Oscar nominations, but his best work is still the wry "Rednecks" of 1974.

5 out of 5 stars Randy Newman's Love-Hate Relationship with the South.......2005-09-10

I have not heard all of Randy Newman's albums, but of his early works, "12 Songs," "Sail Away," and "Good Old Boys," I like "Good Old Boys" the most. All the songs on it are good, and the redneck concept works well. From a musical standpoint, I also found it more satisfying than "12 Songs" or "Sail Away." While those albums are stripped down musically, "Good Old Boys" uses guitar and synthesizers to greater effect. Although recorded in the mid-70s, "Good Old Boys" doesn't sound dated. With the recent catastrophe in New Orleans, Newman's song "Louisiana 1927," about the terrible flood of that year, is haunting and prophetic. At around 30 minutes or so, "Good Old Boys" doesn't overstay its welcome. In those 30 minutes, it says more than most bands do their whole career. It contains acidic social commentary ("Rednecks," which attacks Southern and Northern racism), colorful character sketches ("A Wedding in Cherokee County" and "Naked Man"), and bittersweet love songs ("Guilty" and "Marie"). Some of the subject matter might be foreign to people who don't know Louisiana history ("Kingfish" and "Every Man a King"), but the songwriting throughout is top-notch. "Good Old Boys" is a real treat, though Louisiana State University alumni might not like the lines: "College men from LSU/Went in dumb, come out dumb too/Hustling 'round Atlanta in their alligator shoes/Get drunk every weekend at a barbecue." Geaux Randy!

5 out of 5 stars 2nd Best Album of All Time.......2005-06-11

Besides "Exile on Main Street," this is the 2nd best album ever made. The songwriting is amazing, and it is an unbelievable record to drink to. Just ask my friend Myles--a no-nonsense kind of guy. He's into Puerto Rican women, big jungle cats, hanging out without his shirt on, and paintings of race cars. He'll rock you. Hard.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Songs.......2005-04-11

I'm with Stephen. 30 years of listening, and this album gets better all the time. "Marie" is fabulous. Of course, Randy's work in general is fabulous.

Don't let the title put you off.

Thom

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Album.......2005-01-18

I have been listening to this album for almost 30 years and it is as fresh and satisfying today as it was in the '70's. As expected the songwriting and instrumentation are beautiful. This is Randy's best album. Give it a good listen. It is simply a work of high art.

Beyond his best-known composition, the Glen Campbell hit "Gentle on My Mind," John Hartford's idiosyncratic, irreverent spin on traditional Southern music has continued for three decades unimpaired by commercial considerations. Since the early 1970s, his willingness to toy with convention made him a forerunner of the progressive bluegrass movement, though he's rarely credited as such. Recorded with a small group of sidemen, this collection of tongue-in-cheek originals has the spontaneity of a jam session. "Waltz of the Golden Rule," "Billy the Kid," and the bent "Watching the River Go By" are quintessential Hartford, showcasing the sophisticated goofiness that's as much his trademark as his derby hat. "The Cross-Eyed Child," a heartfelt, highly personal 10-minute memoir/elegy of Hartford's long friendship with Bill Monroe, captures Monroe's pained youth and enduring genius in a way that even the most learned musicologist couldn't match. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars So Long, John.......2001-06-07

I'm out here buying up copies of the John Hartford CDs I already own. John left this world a day or so ago - a victim of lung cancer. He'll be missed. If you are interested in bluegrass, folk, country-quirk, then check out John's music. He's an original whose loss will be felt by many.

As for this cd, it isn't the best, but like another reviewer stated, even when he's not at the top of his game, John Hartford is great. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent if a little indulgent.......2000-12-14

Not Hartford's best by any means....but that makes it only three light years better than the competition, not the usual seven. He has an excellent new band, that I hope we hear more of. But sometimes, the music just gets a little quirky. Great moments include the title track, "The Cross-eyed Child," and "Watching the River": all three classic Hartford.

In short, a must for established Hartford fans, but there are better introductions to his work.

4 out of 5 stars Natural son of Mark Twain.......2000-06-15

Yes, I really believe it: John Hartford is undoubtedly the natural son of Mark Twain. He was a pilot, a Mississippi rambler and - most of all - a true american musician. What else could testify (apart from this Cd) his relationship with the Hannibal-born novelist?

5 out of 5 stars A National Treasure.......2000-04-20

Sometimes John Hartford can play a 3-second riff on the banjo that is more delicious than chocolate. And since his style is minimalist, his moments of flash are the more to be savored. His 30-second banjo break on "Billy the Kid" on this cd is the epitome of Hartford's whimsical genius. And the long fiddle intro to "Good Old Boys" reminds me of nothing so much as the clarinet ride at the beginning of "Rhapsody in Blue." Mike Compton's mandolin style is like fast water running over a riffle - something I could listen to all day. His high lonesome harmonies are just the thing to offset Hartford's baritone. This cd offers a bluegrass mix without the mechanistic shrillness. Obviously I'm a fan, but this cd is the best thing I've bought since Retrograss.

5 out of 5 stars Groovable.......1999-11-21

This is one cool string-band groove. Cheer 'em on, make a lot of noise!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-04-22

I must confess I am unfamiliar with Copland's "The Tender Land" except for this reissue, which I find to be absolutely magnificent. I realize this is a truncated performance, eliminating what I assume to be a fair amount of spoken dialogue. But I don't care. What is presented here is simply one of the finest American compositions - forget American - one of the finest compositions of the 20th century. Period.

5 out of 5 stars Pure joy.......2005-07-29

The recording of Copland's The Tender Land is alone worth getting this disc. The rest of the vocal works are just a bonus, a very good bonus! Copland directs a definitive account of his opera, and in this compressed version leaves out all the spoken parts of the full length opera, no doubt depriving us of a lot of good music but on the other hand giving listeners a very concise version that is even stronger musically (although dramatically a little lacking in logic because of the missing parts - for example without knowing of the confrontation during the party scene you would find the boys' departure the next morning puzzling, and the CD notes does not elaborate on the plot, which is about the only negative thing you can say about this set). Listening to the opera in this abridged version gives you the feeling of one hit after another, there is not a single weak point in the score and Copland has a gift for word-setting that can turn clumsy texts such as "girls come and go, some are good, some are not so good" into goosebumps stuff (a lovely dedication to Laurie sung by Grandpa). Other high points include the stunning transformation of the traditional Walls of Zion into the quartet piece The Promise Of Living and a rollicking Party Scene, which contains the best in Copland's clever orchestration and rythmic vitality - it seems all of the composers best traits have all come together in this work. Martin's Act 2 Song 'Laurie...You Know, Laurie' is a rare gem or an aria and beautifully sung. Other hidden gems include the comical 'We've Been North'. The cast is impeccable and the entire performance is flawless. Add to that one of those scores that simply win you over from start to finish, and you can't but fall in love with this music. I once thought that nothing could better Appalachian Spring but that was before I discovered this neglected work.

5 out of 5 stars Copland's vocal work.......2002-08-08

And so on this third set of the celebration of Aaron Copland's music, all attention is on his vocal work including the opera, "The Tender Land".

I can't completely explain why I give this five stars after giving the first two sets four stars each. This is just the way the opera, in particular, strikes me. I'm no great opera fan, and to my knowledge, America just has not yet proved itself in the operatic field although it's tried. It will take time, but I do see Copland's work as someday being considered the best example of American opera. This is all subjective opinion, obviously, and I'm sure there are those more knowledgeable who will disagree. So be it.

All in all, these three sets will give you a complete overview of one of America's most important composers.

Randy Newman's 1974 concept album explores the modern contradictions and early 20th century history of the Deep South with his bracing mix of irony, affection, and empathy for twisted psyches and hungry, venal dreams. What sounds like Southern gothic material plays as a virtuosic balancing act between light comedy and political broadside, shivering with moments of unexpected pathos: "Birmingham" is a booster anthem, "A Wedding in Cherokee County" a tableau of dysfunctional romance at once grotesque and touching, "Guilty" a probing confession of addiction, and "Louisiana 1927" a Copeland-esque tragedy of the ravages of that year's historic flood. Capping it all is his classic, double-edged indictment of racism, "Rednecks," which turns the knife back on smug outsiders blind to their own prejudices. --Sam Sutherland

        Album Description

Deluxe remastered reissue of 1974 album including 'Rednecks', 'Louisiana 1927' & 'Marie'.

5 out of 5 stars ONLY VERY FEW CAN COMPETE WITH THIS .......2005-10-23

i wasn't so familiar with randy newman's work except of "i love LA" so that when i bought that record, i found myself completely amazed by the whole thing, this is pop but this is also blues, and the way he sings the blues is quite rare, i mean the intention is really there, his spirit is totally dedicated to the blues and his melodies are so simple and full of sadness and makes you want to love and think about a whole spectrum of things, of course "marie" is incredible but my favorite is "guilty", love the lyrics too: "it takes a whole lotta medecine to believe that i'm somebody else", america should be proud of randy newman, i mean in the white musicians, i simply don't know anybody as good as him in the us. oh i mean almost cause elvis, buddy holly, jerry lee...

        5 out of 5 stars REAL Bluegrass!.......2002-05-12

This is bluegrass music the way it should be played. A raucous live performance from December 1976, mandolin virtuoso Frank Wakefield is backed by David Nelson (of the New Riders of the Purple Sage)on guitar and Tom Stern on banjo. There is at least one other musician on fiddle who is, unfortunately, uncredited. The band, before an enthusiastic audience (which probably included a number of Deadheads, considering who Wakefield was hanging out with), oftens sounds like it is about to spin out of control. Some of Wakefield's skills might seem a bit off, as a result, but you will rarely, if ever, hear a bluegrass performance like this again.
