Rhodesian-born, Greek-raised, London-schooled, Juilliard-scholarshipped, Maria Callas Prize Winner Mario Frangoulis is a pop singer with operatic training. The voice is a high baritone/low tenor. It's very appealing, and decidedly non-operatic sounding--Bocelli, for example, is a true opera singer compared to Frangoulis. His first CD, Sometimes I Dream, was a smash hit. This one is certain to be as well. There's little here to please the classical music lover--an arrangement, with love-song lyrics, of Verdi's "Va,pensiero" chorus from Nabucco is as close to opera as he comes. But what he has to offer is a type of introspection which he puts across with gentle sincerity, and he is as adept singing in English as he is in Italian, Spanish and Greek. Most of the selections here are slow and pensive, but a spirited duet with Spanish singer Aleyandro Fernandez and "Cu' mme," a duet with the singer Melody, with an infectious beat, stand out from the rest. Years ago, this was the type of album couples slow-danced and made out to--there's no reason why the tradition shouldn't continue. If your tastes run to Josh Groban and Russell Watson, which is to say, pop singers with classical training and amazing suaveness, then you'll find Frangoulis irresistible. --Robert Levine

"How about a bad title?" wonders Spencer Kayden's Little Sally in "Too Much Exposition." "That could kill a show pretty good." It's a tribute to the skill deployed by the Urinetown creative team (Mark Hollman, music and lyrics; Greg Kotis, book and lyrics) that its title doesn't kill the show. Set in a near-future in which water depletion has led to a ban on private toilets, this may be the only musical in history in which one of the leads makes a fortune on pee. But the show (which originated Off-Broadway before graduating to the big league) limits its subversive intent to subject matter and is refreshingly classic in approach and structure--think Weill-meets-Lewis Carroll. Backed by a small ensemble, the cast (with John Cullum in a turn nothing short of brilliant as the evil urinal magnate) has a field day with Kotis and Hollman's frequently hilarious score. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I'd heard such rave reviews about this musical, but kept passing on chances to see it. I was turned off by the title -- and this is strange for me, a person not afraid of scatological humor. But maybe I knew something I could not say.

The funniest thing about the musical, I am now convinced, is the premise. Urinetown is a place where you have to pay to pee. A conglomerate has taken over all toilet facilities, and if you don't pay, you don't pee -- unless you go into the bushes, and risk getting arrested.

But it's just not funny. It's supposed to be a satire, but it just doesn't work. Why? I don't know. But I listened to many songs on the CD, and none of them had that true spark that makes you want to laugh. The opening number is "Too Much Exposition" making fun of musicals that open by explaining too much with words instead of action. And perhaps this song is in there to deflect criticism for the main reason this musical doesn't work -- it's too busy explaining, instead of getting on with the business of being funny.

My humor tastes: I watch the Daily Show, Colbert Report, South Park, Dave Chappelle, Dane Cook (so-so), Frasier reruns. Never watched Friends, or Everybody Loves Raymond, or Family Guy, but did watch Seinfeld (although it's not funny to me anymore). The two most recent things I saw that made me laugh out loud were 1) Larry Wilmore doing his n*gg*r skit on Daily Show and 2)an early Chappelle episode where Sesame Street characters talk about drug use

An Amazing Find.......2007-04-03

I just recently discovered this gem of a musical. It's a stand out show with a unique touch. If heard a few outside musicals (The Rocky Horror Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch...) but this one stands out from them. The music is amazing, the lyrics are creative, and the humor is ripe.

With a chamber music-esque overture, the tone is set. 'Too Much Exposition' is a great introduction to Urinetown (the musical). Officer Lockstock addresses the audience about what they should expect from the show. Little Sally wants to let the audience in on the water shortage but Lockstock stops her. ("You're too young to understand it now, but nothing can kill a show like too much exposition." "How 'bout bad subject matter? Or a bad title, even? That could kill a show pretty good.")

I've read what others have written: you don't get the whole humor of the show unless you've seen it. I haven't seen it, but this recording is enough to get me see it. (That is, if a production nearby, even a high school production, is put on.)

With a cry of "Hail Mathus!" the show ends. I just have to listen again, after making a trip to the bathroom.

Not for Everyone.......2006-12-28

This musical is a great piece for the 21st century no doubt, that being said it takes some getting used to. The musical cannot be taken at face value, there are lots of things happening under the surface and it takes some bites at things musical theater doesn't usually take, like itself. On the surface it is strange, and not really something people would listen to over and over. However, once you figure it out, it's fun to listen to it again to find all the things that are really going on. It is very funny, and says some good things about the current state of the world. For musical theater fans this is questionable, if you just like the toe-tapping happy go lucky feel, this isn't it. But if you like the social commentary that goes along with that toe tapping, this is a must. NOT FOR FIRST TIME BROADWAY LISTNERS. Favorite Song: "Look at the Sky"

"DON'T BE THE BUNNY!".......2006-12-04

My son, a high school senior, told me his first show of this year's theatrical season was going to be "Urinetown". My response was something like ... No, really, what shows are you doing this year? Then he brought home a recording of it, and I was hooked right away by the lyrics. Over the years my son has been involved in many performances, but he and the rest of the cast had a real blast preparing for, and performing, this show! He wanted Lockstock, but was cast as Cladwell ... Owned it ... Loved it!
I am no Broadway expert by any stretch of the definition, but this show is wonderfully entertaining! You will see (and hear) snippets from other shows, you will pick up on some of even the more subtle stabs at musicals as a whole, you will groan, you will laugh and you will enjoy ... But only if you try not to take it too seriously.
Get past the title (in this case I certainly think it did not "...kill a show pretty good"), relax, and be entertained. And for goodness sake, if you have a chance to see it performed live, do so! A musical that pokes fun at itself? Yes, a refreshing departure from the norm, and worth the price of admission.

Following my heart to hear more of Mario.......2007-02-15

I probably shouldn't begin this review now as I am strapped for time to do it justice. But I wanted to share my admiration for Mr. Frangoulis now and I will edit later to share more about specific cuts on this CD.

It may be too telling to admit that I purchased this CD out of pure curiosity from the picture of Mario on the cover, without ever previewing any of his music first. But I wasn't disappointed with the content.

From the first listen, Mario's voice bathed me in desire, then wrapped me in silk and cashmere and fed me Godivas. Maybe it was due in part to the lustful romanticism that emanates from this CD, but it put me in a very relaxed and loving mood.

In every cut, Frangoulis' voice and the music was kissed by the gods making it a lovely experience to treasure.

Mario Frangoulis has a voice that is warm and powerful, and brings opera into the 21st century. But when I saw the DVD of his "Sometimes I Dream", I saw real passion and dedication to music. Sony needs to PROMOTE PROMOTE PROMOTE this great talent. I hope to hear and see much more wonderful work from Mario! How about a Christmas CD? Lynn

Mr. Frangoulis Follow Your Heart .......2006-06-23

I was searching a song when I came across Mr.Frangoulis CD and am amazed at his wonderful voice! I normally do not buy this type of music but was so taken of how he transcends above all others that sing this type of music. I highly recommend you listen to the songs "Follow Your Heart" and "Dance" and you can experience what I'm talking about.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

I actually was so pleased to see a CD available because I have been longing for the movie "with a song in my heart" to become available on VHS and then on DVD, and it never has, so now at least I can enjoy the songs from the movie. The cast track from Pal Joey was just an added bonus.

With A Song In My Heart CD.......2007-03-19

I saw the film, "With A Song In My Heart" when I was twelve or thirteen years old and have wanted the sound track for many years. As an impressionable teenager in the 1950s, I have collected over time many of the films from that time on VHS or DVD, to satisfy my memories of the period. I regret that this particular film is not available on VHS or DVD, but, this CD is the next best choice. It is really enjoyable to hear the richness and depth of the voice of Jane Froman, who was one of the best singers of the time. I can still recall many scenes from the film and this CD revives the memories so well.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART

Susan Hayward played Jane Froman in the film but Froman herself dubbed the vocals. This album of songs was originally issued as a 10" Lp. None of the tracks are taken from the film: They are all studio re-recordings. Later, Capitol re-released it as a 12" LP with two extra songs added. It is that expanded [program included here. Froman is in great voice, though the orchestrations are overly lush and string heavy. Still, the songs include such standards as "It's a Good Day", "Get Happy", and "Embraceable You" making for an enjoyable mini-concert.

PAL JOEY

Capitol's cast album of the 1952 revival has long been a collector's item. The original Lp was deleted in 1960 and did not resurface until Broadway Angel released it on CD (briefly) in 1993. As the stars of the revival Harold Lang and Vivienne Segal had already made a studio cast album for Columbia - an album that helped inspire the revival - they were unable to re-record their songs for Capitol, and the label turned to Jane Froman and Dick beavers to fill in. The revised orchestrations sound dated now, but here is a chance to hear Elaine Stritch singing "Zip" and to enjoy the lusty voice of Helen Gallagher early in her career.

In the end it's the WITH A SONG IN MY HEART selections (making their debut on CD here) that make this CD worthwhile. For PAL JOEY the studio recording (available from SONY) is preferable, however if one is so inclined you can assemble your own cast album of the '52 revival by combining tracks from both releases.

"Pal Joey's" Pal.......2006-07-30

While the legubrious and over-orchestrated songs from the film "With a Song in My Heart" are typical of their era (and Jane Froman's stilted renditions are what once stood for emoting) the "Pal Joey" cast recording is an absolute delight. The orchestrations are bouncy and jazzy in a way that has long been forgotten, and the performances (except for the aforementioned Ms. Froman, whose Vulgnarian renditions are at times quite disconcerting, and who hits the sonic notes like lazer beems but misses the emotional ones by a country mile) are exceptional. Helen Gallagher deserved her Tony from the evidence of this recording, with Elaine Stritch not far behind her. But the overall impact surpasses any recording of "Joey" including the historic one that lead to this revival. There's energy, intensity and a whole lot of fantastic song writing (leave it to to Rogers and Hart) to satisfy any musical theater fan. A must have for anyone who loves "Old Broadway."

Jane Froman was one of the top vocalists of her era. Froman's greatness is celebrated in this new 2-on-1 album, which comprises the film soundtrack of WITH A SONG IN MY HEART as well as the 1952 Broadway revival cast album of PAL JOEY.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART was the life story of Jane Froman, with the lovely Susan Hayward in the lead role. Froman herself supplied the singing for the film. Numbers include "It's a Good Day", the bittersweet and humorous "They're Either Too Young or Too Old", "Blue Moon", "Get Happy", "Tea for Two" and "I'm Thru with Love".

The 1952 Broadway revival of PAL JOEY was the result of the huge success of a studio album released by Columbia the year before (which featured Vivienne Segal reprising her original role of Vera and Harold Lang as Joey). Segal and Lang headlined the new revival with Helen Gallagher (SWEET CHARITY, HAZEL FLAGG) as Gladys Bumps and Elaine Stritch (ON YOUR TOES, GOLDILOCKS) as reporter Melba Snyder.

Having already recorded their roles for the Columbia album, Segal and Lang saw little need in re-recording them for the revival album on the Capitol label. Instead, the roles of Vera and Joey were covered by Jane Froman and Dick Beavers.

The cast album suffers on many levels. First, the absence of Segal and Lang is quite distracting, and secondly the new Overture can't even compare with the scintillanting original.

The Columbia studio album is the version to buy in addition to this, though both albums have their strong and weak points. As per usual, Elaine Stritch brings her impressive and formidable comic timing to the fore in the show-stopping "Zip", and Helen Gallagher's silvery voice is perfect for "That Terrific Rainbow".

Not much of a Disney Princess CD!.......2006-05-04

Well, Disney has done this again... How can this thing earn money?
Only "Kiss the Girl" "Reflection" and "Once Upon a Dream" are favorites. It was so strange that "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" which was from "The Lion King" was in this album. This was not from a Disney Princess Movie! And why the song from "Aladdin & the King of Thieves" can be recorded in a Disney Princess album?
I love Disney Princess very much, and I love listening to the wonderful and sweet voices of the Princesses, for example, Ariel, Belle and Pocahontas, even Mulan. Well, where are the songs of the Princesses? And I don't like the songs from "Cinderella-2: Dreams Come True", I think they wouldn't be so terrible if there were no classic Princess songs as reference substance!
This album is really unworthy. It was neither fit for adults nor children, even a Disney fan won't love this. This album might make Disney fans and your kid disappointed, even angry. We want to listen to REAL Disney Princess songs! What we want is not this confusing album. I hope that there won't be any Disney Favoties albums like this. It's really disappointing. I have to say this even though it's not nice: If you buy this, you might be taken in by this. Save your money to buy other better off Disney albums!

The Real Reason to Get This CD.......2005-12-31

I'm going to say it right now --- this CD is good. It's very good. If you're looking for true "Disney princess" tracks and you don't consider Cinderella II, Aladdin and the King of Thieves or Mulan/Lion King to count, then stop now. But it seems like most people are basing their opinions on the sorts of songs they expected from the CD, rather than what's actually on it.

The CD begins with "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" by Meg(ara) from Disney's "Hercules." This is one of my favorite Disney movies and this is an excellent track. Meg tries to deny her feelings for Hercules, before finally sort of admitting that she is in love.

Next is "Belle" from "Beauty and the Beast." A wonderful tune of dreams and romance that was nominated for an Academy Award.

Who doesn't enjoy "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" Featuring funny bits by Timon and Pumbaa, excellent harmonies and singing by both Simba and Nala.

"If I Can't Love Her" is from the stage show of "Beauty and the Beast." It's my least favorite track on the CD, but it's still fairly decent and interesting to hear for those who haven't seen this stage show.

"Reflection" is from "Mulan" and I consider it to be possibly be the best track from that movie. Is Mulan is a Disney princess? Well, you can debate that all you want --- I suppose at this point, she's royalty, so I guess she counts.

"Out of Thin Air" is my favorite song "Aladdin and the King of Thieves." Aladdin and Jasmine sing about what it would be like for Aladdin to finally find his father. Jasmine tells Aladdin that he doesn't just come out of thin air. The music on this recalls "A Whole New World" for me.

"Kiss the Girl" is from "The Little Mermaid." It's not my favorite song from that movie --- I would have preferred "Part of Your World." But it'll do all right. And it can't be said that Ariel isn't a Disney princess --- after all, she does marry Prince Eric.

"Once Upon a Dream" is a classic! It's from "Sleeping Beauty." Sure, the little kiddies today may not entirely appreciate this, but I think it's wonderful that they would include a classic like this.


Now, part of the reason for this CD's release was to have a place for the music from the Disney "Cindrella" sequel "Cindrella II." Yes, this is a direct-to-DVD release, but it's a good one. This CD is the only place to find these excellent songs, all performed by Brooke Allison. They also all (except the last one) follow a theme of "being yourself:"

"Follow Your Heart" is about a time when Cinderella was assigned to the preparations for the royal ball. She was given all sorts of instructions, such as not opening the curtains and not inviting commoners in. Finally, she decided to just do things her own way. A lively, upbeat, positive theme.

"The World Is Looking Up To" is about the mouse Jaq and when he decides to become human. Another fun track about being yourself.

"It's What's Inside That Counts" comes from when Cinderella's stepsister Anastasia fell in love. She thought she'd get all dolled up, but learned that she can be loved just for being her.

Finally, "Put It Together" is a wonderfully fun techno remix of the classic "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo." I was surprised this works, but it does, splendidly.

So if you're looking for a Disney CD with great music and are willing to look past any preconceived ideas, then snap this CD up.

Another Repackaging Of Princess Favorites.......2004-04-21

When is Disney ever going to realize that recycling Disney Princess songs aren't such a good idea? As a Disney Princess fan since I was really little I have always enjoyed Disney princess songs. But i am so so so so sick and tired about on just about every Disney album dedicated solely to the Disney Princesses Disney always always ALWAYS has a habit of recycling old princess songs instead of adding new princess songs. I mean people already own half the songs on Princess Favorites and can buy them on the film soundtracks or the Disney princess collection cd. Why I think this cd was released is that Disney was trying to promote the movie Cinderella II Dreams Come True as the songs from that movie are on this cd. But heck one of the songs Put it Together is also on the SUPERSTAR HITS cd. So while this cd may be a redone version of Princess Collection Volume #2 please Please Please PLEASE do not buy,

Whose Princess Favorites???.......2003-10-15

I would classify only 3 of the songs on this CD as Princess Favorites - Belle, Kiss The Girl and Once Upon A Dream. The rest are either not Princess songs or not favorites.

My daughter is a huge Disney Princess fan, and wants to hear the songs from the Princess movies non-stop. She's only 3, but she does know her princesses, and the girl from Hercules and Nala from the Lion King are definitely NOT princesses! This is also the first time that I've seen Mulan grouped with the princesses.

We wanted music from the classic Disney Princess movies that she loves - Cinderella, Snow White, Beauty & The Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. I do not put Cinderella 2 and Aladdin and the Forty Thieves in that category - were those even released in the theaters, or direct to video?

I am generally a fan of the Disney compilations, but this one feels like a marketing rip-off. Get the Disney Classics 5 CD set if you really want the Princess Favorites - they may be spread out over all the discs, but they are the songs you want to hear!

Save your money!.......2002-04-30

A friend gave this CD to my little girl for her 5th birthday...she was thrilled to get it. The thrill ended as soon as it was played. She wanted to know where the Princesses were.
There is no Ariel...just a song by Sebastian. No Cinderella, no Snow White, and why would they place an unknown song from the Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast which only has been heard by the people attending the musical?? At least Sleeping Beauty made the grade. My daughter has the movie Cinderella II which the CD promotes, but is not familiar with them to really enjoy these 4 songs.
Again, save your money...some day maybe Disney will set aside some of their money and marketing hunger and put out a CD that any 5 year old princess will enjoy singing along with...BTW isn't Beauty and the Beast being re-released...oh yea, thats why that endless song about Belle is on there..Bon Jour!

Hi,

May 14, 2005 I went to the Clarksville, Virginia Pow Wow held at the Occanneechi State Park. This artist started to sing and her music spoke to my heart. Then I decided to purchase the CD. I LOVED IT!!!! Her style has a Blues sound to it. My favorite song is track #9 "Tuscarora People." I agree with her lyrics. We, Black Indians, are still hear.....My ancestors live through me!

Native American activist, singer-songwriter Pura Fe, is internationally known as a founding member of the acapella trio, Ulali. Her latest musical contribution is a solo effort that incorporates contemporary blues and traditional native american songs.

The album, "Follow your Heart's Desire," is a spiritual journey that opens with the title track, an uplifting piano ballad in which she sings lyrics that all can relate to: "Not knowing when and where to go, your heart will take you there...you hope for no despair." Other songs are political, highlighting the struggles of indigenous people around the world. "Rise up Tuscarora Nation" becomes an anthem for the Tuscarora who didn't migrate to upstate New York; while "You Still Take" creates a perfect blend of bluesy slide-guitar with the voices of the Deer Clan Singers, a trio of performers from North Carolina.

Pura Fe's voice is beautiful. At times in songs such as "Whole World is Down on Me," she channels Janis Joplin, her powerfully charged voice soars to dizzying heights. Fans of Ulali will recognize a shorter, guitar version of "Going Home", one of thier signature songs. The song conjures images of North Carolina history: "Tobacco fields, trail of tears, stolen people on stolen land...I'm going home..." and ends with a Stomp Dance song. Pura Fe has created a great work of art that strikes deep: full of history, blues and traditional native music of the southeast.

Pura Fe's artistry is multidimensional, kaleidoscoping into shifting visual geometries of light and color and sound and movement, like a jewel.

Her mother sang jazz with Duke Ellington and opera for the Met, her father, who named her was Puerto Riqueno. Grounded in the folkways of First Nations people (a smoke dance champion and fabric artist), including her own Tuscarora, most know Pura Fe as a singer and songwriter who co-founded Ulali with the incomparable Soni Moreno and cousin Jennifer. So, here's the revelation: Pura Fe is a blues guitarrista, who plays dark, slithery lap-style slide guitar.

Pura Fe gives indigenous people pride of place in the roots of the blues. Her liner notes reveal her fierce concern for the truth and her tenderness and humor, "African and Indian slaves were harbored, escorted and smuggled across the Canadian border through Indian country. This union gave birth to a rich new culture blending religion, dance, and food, good looking people and the Blues!"

The composition Della Blackman/Pick and Choose delivers a new chapter in the history of murder ballads from the color line; its "pick and choose" chorus is a mantra we should all memorize. Her slide guitar lends a dark glory to the Ulali standard "You Still Take"; the voices of the Deer Clan Singers are beaded into the blues framework of the song in a way that conjures visions --I imagined these indigenous and African sounds rising starward on campfire smoke at a nightwatch on the Underground Railroad. Cool John Ferguson's lickety-split, jazzy licks on the title track make you wish he'd sat in for the whole session. And every now and then, as in the denouement to Rise Up Tuscarora Nation, Pura Fe's voice leaps off a cliff -- where it soars on ravenswings, sending chills down your spine and leaving every hair on the back of your neck standing straight up.

It is rare to find any performer with such depth of artistry. Kudos to the Music Maker Foundation for making this possible. You know the ancestors, and Ingrid Washinawatook in particular, are smiling and laughing and clapping and singing along with Pura Fe to beat the band.

Heartfelt and real... full of tradition and style!.......2004-12-07

I've been a fan of Ulali for quite some time now, and I just had to pick up this album when I heard about it. While the style is slightly different than the Ulali a cappella trio, I've found it no more difficult to absolutely fall in love with this disc. Pura Fe herself plays guitar and piano to complement her masterful vocals, and unmatched writing skills. Her English lyrics range from the emotionally charged track "You Still Take", to the aptly named, dulcet track "Sweet Willie". She has also done an amazing job of combining the traditional music of her native North Carolina roots with the blues culture which grew around the area. She has in effect, painted a portrait of her ancestral home using masterful lyrics, a sharp sense of melody and harmony, and a heart full of passion and emotion.

Look for the title track and how it ropes you in with pervasive four part harmonies and powerful piano chords to set the tone. This is really and truly a momentous and lovely album.

Es mejor Sometimes I dream..aun cuando apenas estoy escuchando este nuevo Cd, ya puedo asegurar que no se compara con el primero. No hay que engañarse. Here's to the heroes es buena, Ave Maria es muy buena tambien, pero en general, si comparamos este CD con el primero , gana el primero con creces. La dupla con Alejandro Fernandez es lo peor que le pudieron haber aconsejado a Sr. Frangoulis. El debe rodearse de cantantes de su nivel y no aficionados.
En Fin, para los que gustamos de Mario Frangoulis, no es el mejor disco, yo aprecio la musica él ( como Josh Groban ) pero no soy fanatico para no ver los defectos de sus discos, por lo tanto, si quieren comprenlo pero no esperen un Sometimes I dream, este es regular..talvez con el tiempo de escucha se llegue a apreciar mas.

Absolutely a superb album from one of the best under-the-radar San Francisco bands of the 60's-70's! Intricate, yet accessible, these boys can weave soft thread or lay down the hammer depending on the feel of the song. As you listen to these guys playing so masterfully, think about the Dead still trying to tune their instruments!

This is a Rare Gem.......2006-06-01

Bill Champlin can sing like crazy, and play any instrument in the band. I think Terry Haggerty probably took too much acid at some point in time, but still plays some nice spacey licks.

The high points of this CD for me is "Hey Children" a nice shuffel blues track, and "Beside You" a nice ballad featuring Bills excellent falsetto.

This is a great CD--don't be scared off by the 3 stars--I'm a tough grader.

At Their Best.......2005-03-16

The Sons of Champlin were the SF bay area's great unsung band, and were miles ahead of most, in musicianship and songwriting. This is my favorite album of theirs. I didn't give it five stars because, even though the quality is good, it is from a vinyl source. Why did it take an English record company to put this out, when we have every out-of-tune Grateful Dead utterance in pristine digital? Oh well. Get this.

MASTERPIECE - Like A Ring In A Bell.......2004-07-18

I just don't understand why this 1971 recording is often maligned by the band's fans. The Sons are stripped down and without horns, which is just fine. The band plays with such rollicking conviction and Bill Champlin sings with such clarity, that even the dippy hippie-message lyrics become indispensible to the whole personality. Like one of your weird, eccentric friends who inspire you with their sheer belief.
With FOLLOW YOUR HEART there's emphasis on the tones of the instruments; the drum tones sweetly solid and the guitars burn white hot.
A must-hear is Terry Haggerty's intense guitar bursts. As someone who's bored by the noodling of Jerry G and annoyed by Carlos S's neck-throttling gimmickry, the guitar solos are concise masterpieces never exceeding 8 or 16 bars and for me, what put this record in the Pantheon of my record collection. With each phrase you get the feeling that Haggerty is discovering his own star, like a prodigy kid who just let loose his first-ever genius wild jazz lick.
You should buy this record. I did, twice.

i really don't understand who makes the decisions to put which albums on cd. i really like bits and pieces of the sons material. lossen up naturally has a few great songs, most of welcome to the dance is awesome and a circle filled with love (only available on vinyl to my knowledge) is super, but i didn't find a single keeper on this cd.

These are beloved popular songs from our grandparents' generation that are redolent of lavender an tears. Their sentimentality couldn't be more out of fashion, but Ben Heppner steps forward, like Mario Lanza before him, to offer thrills amidst the honeyed scents. He's totally sincere, and you'd have to be Alberich or Don Pizarro to react with anything but a melting heart. God, I'm falling into the same vocabulary as these songs. No need to blush, though, with such a great singer at hand.

Mr. Heppner Must Have A Large Parlour!.......2005-02-22

I purchased this CD after hearing Mr. Heppner in recital singing "Homing" for an encore. This small gem written by Teresa Del Riego is a haunting song about loneliness. We learn from the notes-- they are very informative with bios on the composers included here as well as the words to the lyrics-- that she composed this ballad in 1917, the year her husband was killed in France just before the ending of World War I. There are other lovelies here as well: "I Love Life", "We'll Gather Lilacs", "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise" as well as music by Noel Coward, Sigmund Romberg and Rudolf Friml. Heppner also sings "I'll Be Seeing You." It's such a relief to hear someone other than Liberace do that number since it was the song that he always used to close his television show in the 50's and unfortunately made into a syrupy cliche.

Mr. Heppner says these are songs of the parlour, stage and silver screen. His glorious voice which appears to be a combination of steel and gold fills a recital hall easily. He would need a huge parlour to sing in as well.

This CD is quite wonderful. There are no dull cuts. Since the songs are all about love, this would make a great February 14 gift.

What a 'crossover' album should be!.......2001-09-01

In general, I hate it when classical singers make 'crossover' recordings. Usually the singer has no idea how to sing 'pop' material in anything like the proper style - even someone who is singing it because he or she genuinely likes the music and not just to milk cash from the unsuspecting masses. But there are always exceptions to a rule, and this CD is one of them. Ben Heppner here scales down his huge operatic voice and shows his 'secret heart', a more intimate side of his musical personality.

There is no question that Heppner is one of the greatest tenors of our age. He is often compared with his fellow Canadian Jon Vickers (with whom he shares much of his repertory) but especially here, he is beginning to remind me more and more of Jussi Bjorling, and I can think of no higher compliment. Part of this is because Bjorling actually sang quite a bit of repertory similar to what Heppner sings here, but more importantly, both voices have an ideal combination of power and sweetness. Heppner's is essentially a very lyric voice despite its large size, and he is capable of great tonal beauty and sensitivity. This not only makes his Wagner, Giordano, and Berlioz very special, but makes him equally adept with the gentle little gems he sings on this disc. He is helped somewhat by the fact that these songs, most of which were written in the very early part of the 20th century, are a lot closer to the 'classical' style than more modern pop. But what really makes Heppner perfect for this material is his total identification with the texts, his tenderness, and his utter sincerity. Also, his diction is superb - you won't need the printed texts to understand what he is singing. In the hands of a lesser singer, some of these old fashioned songs would be absolute treacle. But an artist like Heppner can raise up even 'substandard' compositions and give them the aura of greatness.

In the more upbeat songs, Heppner sings with the thrilling, heroic tone that has made him in demand in every opera house in the world. He makes 'Let All My Life Be Music' into his personal mission statement. 'Homing' was also a favorite of another great Wagnerian tenor, namely Lauritz Melchior. 'I Love Life!', complete with splendid high C, is sung with enough cheer and vigor to bring anybody out of a depression. But this repertory is often gentle and introspective, and Heppner can also easily fine down his voice to a splendid pianissimo, drawing you in and enticing you to pay attention as opposed to banging you over your head like many other tenors do. Ivor Novello's 'Love is My Reason For Living' and Ernest Charles' 'Let My Song Fill Your Heart' are light, gracious Viennese waltzes. The familiar 'Roses of Picardy', 'Bird Songs at Eventide' and 'I'll Be Seeing You' are also sung sweetly and caressingly. Two more Novello songs are among the best tracks on the album. 'Someday My Heart Will Awake', is soft, gentle, and nostalgic, rising to a passionate conclusion. 'We'll Gather Lilacs' is obviously a love song from Heppner to his wife Karen (to whom the entire album is dedicated), full of yearning and deeply moving.

The operetta selections are even more special. In the Serenade from 'The Student Prince', which is alone worth the price of the CD, Heppner makes something truly thrilling of the declaration 'Oh, hear my longing cry!/Oh, love me or I die!', and ends with not one but two spectacular high Cs. What a pity that the chances of him ever recording the entire operetta are so slim! The cajolingly sung title song from 'The Desert Song' is almost as fine, as is 'Love Me Tonight' from 'The Vagabond King'. Finally, the title song 'I'll Follow My Secret Heart', with yet another brilliant high C, makes a splendid finish to this very enjoyable album.

I should also give credit to noted composer and orchestrator Jonathan Tunick for his warm, rich, and perfectly scaled arrangements of these songs. Like Heppner, he finds the perfect mood for each piece and never engages in schmaltz that one might expect from some of this material. The only complaint I have about this disc is the one I have about many contemporary CDs - why is there only 54 minutes of music on a medium that can hold almost 80 minutes? There are assuredly more than 18 songs Heppner could have recorded in this vein. I would have liked to have seen more operetta items in particular. Although I suppose they couldn't have recorded the Drinking Song from 'The Student Prince' as well as the Serenade without a chorus, it would have been nice if 'Deep In My Heart, Dear' had been included. Still, the quality of what is there far outweighs the quantity. The excellent documentation, in German and French as well as English, includes a personal note from Heppner, biographies of all the composers as well as Heppner and Tunick, and complete song texts. The cover shows Heppner surrounded by red velvet, designed, amusingly enough, by Red Herring Productions!

Whether you're an opera lover who wants to hear a great tenor in a lighter mood, or a fan of early 20th century popular music who is curious to see what it sounds like sung by a genuinely great voice, this disc is essential. It is an excellent introduction to Heppner's artistry if you haven't experienced it before, and after listening to it you might want to try some of his opera CDs, both solo recitals and complete recordings. There are few voices that could serve as a better introduction for a neophyte to the wonderful world of opera. If only more 'crossover' singers (both classical and pop) had Heppner's musical integrity...

Air give me air, I need lots of air, air, air.......This cd has caused me a lot of adverse breathing.

The things that I have read about Ben have been very true. He really is a lot more than I ever bargained for. He is THAT GOOD.

I need to go out on a limb and say that he is the best tenor I have ever heard. In my wildest dreams I never thought anyone could be that good.

For this cd Ben choose to sing a lot of standards. Bravo! This is my kind of music. Ben did an excellent job crooning us with his golden voice. He knew when to hold back and when to sing at full strength. This is marvelous how he worked each song to get the full meaning out of it.

The only complaint I have is there was not enough of the good olde songs that I wanted to hear Ben sing. I know it's hard to please all the people all the time and I understand where Ben was coming from.

This cd is a must for the fans of beautiful opera singers who crossover with popular music.
