It starts with a sunrise, it ends with "one star shining," and in between Closing Time contains an honest year's worth (1973, to be exact) of sweet, melodic, vintage Tom Waits--minus some of the vocal growl and thematic grit of his later stuff (but you can see it coming). Waltzes, lullabies, blues, jazz, you name it. Driving songs and drinking songs, even an honest to gosh country tune: "Rosie." There are torchers ("Lonely"), scorchers ("Ice Cream Man"), and back-porch senior citizen love songs ("Martha"): "Those were the days of roses/Poetry and prose, and/Martha, all I had was you and all you had was me." Other standouts are "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You" (guess what--he does!) and "Grapefruit Moon," in which Waits croons: "Every time I hear that melody, something breaks inside." Waits' debut..........2007-06-11

Tom Waits' first album "Closing Time" is appropriately titled, because it perfectly captures the mood of the bar between 1:45 - 2:00 a.m. during last call. This is one of the definitive late night listening discs in my CD collection, and if I had a dollar for every time I've slipped this one on after a night at the bars I could quit my day job. Probably the best known song off of "Closing Time" is the opening song "Ol '55" which was later to be covered by The Eagles and Richie Havens, although neither captured the melancholy mood created by Waits. His voice was still young in 1973 and was nowhere near the grit and bombast it would attain on later albums, but his voice was perfectly suited for the songs on this album. "Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" is a well written description of the cat and mouse games people play near the end of the night, and gives the listener a glimpse of Waits' talent at the songwriting craft. One of my personal favorites off this disc is "Lonely", which is a spare and simple melody that never fails to tug at my heart when I hear it. One of the reasons this album is so effective is due to the many moments scattered throughout it that bring a tear to your eye. If you can listen to a song like "Martha" and not be moved in the slightest your heart must be made of stone. This album and "The Heart Of Saturday Night" were Waits at his most accessible and I would recommend either to those who are new to the music of Tom Waits. Waits moved further into more challenging realms as his career went on, but this album remains a snapshot of a budding genius.

it was a beautiful spring afternoon. i was up on a ladder, cleaning out the gutters on our suburban dream-home. suddenly i slipped. next thing i know, i'm coming to in a hospital bed all bound up with a neck-brace and the works. i was alone, confused. then from down the hallway i heard this album being played on a boom-box. i smiled, cause i knew everything was going to be alright.

Classic gem. Timeless songs........2007-03-21

This was my first Tom Waits purchase...picked it up in my early college years. There are very few albums out there that have resonated with feelings I've had, I mean right on the money and spelled it all out in song! This album is one of those. Nothing like staying in on a rainy night, lighting some candles, having a scotch and easing into this wonderful yarn of songs.

Start your Tom Waits collection with this one!.......2007-03-18

This is the first Tom Waits album I've bought. This is a fantastic album. Folk, jazz, piano, guitar, unique voice, poetic songs. If you like acoustic music and bob dylan/neil young type voices, i expect you'd like this. No lyrics on this CD unfortunately. This was made in 1973 - it has a timeless appeal. Get this one, especially if you've never heard him before or if think you hate Tom Waits. You might change your mind.

Good, but not as good as I hoped.......2007-02-15

I know Tom Waits mostly from his later material. Based on the reviews, I was looking forward to this album. For me, it came up a little short.

This album contains romantic songs performed seriously, and it's just not as playful as some of his later albums. Call me crazy, but I prefer the gravelly voice of his older years. Maybe I'm disappointed because I didn't come in with a clean slate.

That being said, there are some excellent songs on this. "Ol' 55", "I Hope I Don't Fall in Love with You" and "Grapefruit Moon" are all wonderful. Some of the others? Well, let's just say not wonderful.

I think of Tom Waits as Captain Hook in Shrek II. This isn't that guy.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

I do the Time Warp again and again.......2007-05-17

For most people, especially discerning classic music afficienados, they'd rather own the soundtrack with the entire suites included, than to own a compilation. This series by Telarc is an exception, since the performances, while not definative, are still spectacular. And being its a Telarc release, sound quality is always excellent.

Telarc has release a whole slew of these symphonic Sci-Fi themed CDs, and while all of them seem to have something to offer, they all fall short of feeling like a piece of art onto themselves. This CD comes closer to being an artistic statement as any in the series, and if not for the misstep of the overlong, boring rendition of the orginal Star Trek Menagerie suite done for the TV pilot, this could have been stellar. The rest is a near perfect compilation of classic works mixed with modern classical works. The inclusion of the Menagerie suite is unnecessary here, since the TV show was already covered on the Star Tracks series. Perhaps they could have included a work from Holst:The Planets, or any other sci-fi movie.

Over all, this the best in that it came relatively early in the series which has since worn out its welcome. This disc, along with the first two Star Track CDs, is a nice collection of symphonic works.

Great Dynamic Range ... Good Selections.......2007-02-19

This older CD offers the true "Pure Digital" audio potential of CD's.

One can easily destroy an expensive speaker system using some of the selections provided.

So... keep your levels low the first time around.

A Cherished Memory.......2005-10-02

I remember when I first purchased this CD. Compact Discs were hard to find (at least the kind of music I liked). Everything was still on vinyl. This sounded so incredibly powerful over my LPs. "The Menagerie: Suite" composed by Alexander Courage with Erich Kunzel conducting still sounds very impressive. This Compact Disc really demonstrates the prominent characterists of Digital recordings. I still love my soundtracks on LPs but this CD has now become a nostalgic part of collection of film music.

From a Galaxy Far Far Away to the year 2001.......2003-07-08

Time Warp brought together the best of the science fiction world. Everything on this cd is classic. The Alien closing title, "The Menagerie," and my favorite, "Also Sprach Zarathustra."

Although Strauss' renewed version of "On the Beautiful Blue Danube" isn't as good as the original, it is definatley great. I think only Dorsey's "Ascent" was a let down. I did not enjoy that piece.

Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra from "2001: A Space Odyssey" is brilliant. The entire cd is full of artistic minds.

Classic sci-fi gets the symphonic treatment!.......2003-04-02

"Time Warp" was the first recording by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops that I ever purchased. And it, without a doubt, was money well spent.

The album is a sci-fi lover's delights, featuring one-of-a-kind orchestral renditions of popular scores. Kunzel and company have outdone themselves with their performance on the rarely heard "The Menagerie: Suite", composed by Alexander Courage for the pilot episode ("The Cage") of "Star Trek". John Williams's "Superman: Love Theme" and "Star Wars: Throne Room" sound clearer and more majestic than in their original soundtrack forms.

Over fifteen minutes of the classical music heard in Kubrick's "2001" are presented here and that alone makes this an essential purchase.

A good idea not perfected.......1999-08-10

Shakespeare seems to be all the rage in the cinema world and record companies are seldom far behind. This is a Good Thing but it is easy to run out of ideas and/or saturate the market with Elizabethan-type programs; so one must find a gimmick. Telarc has found one, not very original perhaps, but pleasant enough for the listener. It is called (CD-80551) and contains music that comes from films and greater works. The films represented are "Shakespeare in Love," the second "Henry V," and the Zeffirelli "Romeo and Juliet." None of these, mind you, have any pretense at a late 16th century sound; and I would have strongly opted for the Olivier "Henry V" which at least used material from that period. But the keyword in this collection is "inspired," so let that rest. From the classics come some Mendelssohn "Midsummer Night's Dream" and some Berlioz "Romeo et Juliette" with some of Prokofiev's, and all of Tchaikovski's. Why Telarc didn't stick to just to the Romeo play makes me wonder. The best bit (to me) is the "Ave Maria" and final scene from Verdi's "Otello." This compilation features Kunzel and the Cincinatti Pops, Levi and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and Maazel and the Cleveland Orchestra. The film music is generally played well given the level of it quality), the classical is better played on many other older recordings. Still this idea is a good one and perhaps Telarc will use it again using only classical or only film score sources.
