On Breakfast in Bed, her first release on Time Life Records (yes, that Time Life) Joan Osborne tackles a crop of hand-picked soul and R&B favorites with equal parts sass and sensitivity. Long an underappreciated artist, Osborne is a performer with the wisdom to exercise vocal restraint for an effect that's more Dusty Springfield than Christina Aguilera. Her fine previous outing interpreting soul standards was aptly titled How Sweet It Is, and witness her contribution to the terrific 2002 film Standing in the Shadows of Motown, where Osborne's astute readings of "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" and "Heatwave" outshone performers like Ben Harper and Gerald Levert (happily, both songs are included here). The title track and Hall and Oates' "Sara Smile" are both canny choices that play to her strengths in delivering credible blue-eyed soul, and six new Osborne-penned songs fit neatly into the record. If her compositions pale a bit next to the classics she covers (with the sultry and slithery exception of the excellent "Eliminate the Night"), give Osborne credit for bravely placing herself side-by-side with songwriting luminaries like Holland-Dozier-Holland and Bill Withers. You can't go wrong........2007-07-25

This intriguing mix cover songs and originals make this a very enjoyable collection, although the covers are not as varied as say Annie Lennox's Medusa but still engaging all the same. The tracks seem to pull you in more and more with each listen. "Baby is a Butterfly", "Sarah Smile" and "Cream Dream" were all particularly absorbing the first time through. The production is very good and clean. Her voice is as mesmerizing and sensual as always. You can't go wrong.

I can never believe how Joan tops herself time and again. Since I first heard Spiderweb before Relish was widely released I knew I was in for a stunner. Over the years I've collected pretty much all Joan's recording including trades of several soundboard live recordings. With Breakfast in Bed Joan delivers once again.The songs are well chosen and as always the CD is perfectly balanced.
Her original recordings fit in with the covers she selected. I've been waiting for over two years for her to deliver these original works. I saw her perform in an obscure venue in Southern Connecticut where she was trying out her chops on these numbers. Keep up with the Soul, R

Exactly as advertised.......2007-07-22

As one reviewer noted, this release is somewhat monotone. Still, it's a relaxing and quality release from Joan that my wife really likes. Getting "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" is a bonus.

A couple of the originals are really excellent, stay in your head tunes. I'd say if your having Breakfast in Bed, it works. But it's not an all occasions, "hey check this out" kind of release.

Joan O. has got it.......2007-07-19

I'm becoming a bigger fan of Joan every day. I loved her last album, Pretty Little Stranger, even though it was a bit country for her, and I'm not a country music fan. I'm interested in checking out this collection of her covering pop hits. She does covers well, and her voice is so obviously hers, that even though it might be a song you have heard enough times already in your life, hearing the "Joan" version is always a treat. I'm sorry this is not a review of this album in particular, I do plan to get it soon. I'll let you know then! I'm giving 5 stars based on the Amazon video and audio samples. What I can say is that her previous albums are all great, and her live shows are awesome, especially if you can be lucky enough to see her in a smaller venue.

The first time I saw her was pretty much by accident. I wound up crossing through the front of a very large crowd between acts at a Woodstock reunion in Bethel, NY (not Pepsistock in Saugeraties), in the late 90's. Then Joan and her band came on and I'm front and center and she blew me away with St. Teressa or something like that. I've been a fan ever since.

Fantastic voice and song list.......2007-07-12

Most know Joan for her 90's hit "If God Was One of Us." She is far from those days. Most would be astounded to hear what Joan;s voice is capable of, as that song only trapped her into a simple octave throughout its verses.

Here in "Breakfast In Bed", Joan takes the jazz practice of covering American classics and favorites in her dynamic, raspy alto voice. This is a great CD, my favorites include the live performances of "Heatwave" and "What Becomes of a Broken Hearted" with Motown's Funk Brothers; and classics "Natural High" and "Sara Smile."

Check the song list, if you find any of your old favorites the GET THIS CD, you will definately not be disappointed. However "What Becomes of a Broken Hearted" is worth the $13 alone.

Best since Abbey Road?.......2007-06-27

This album, back in 1978, seemed like it had fallen from heaven. The production values are gorgeous, resembling the WIlsons' studio work in finesse and brilliance. The songs themselves, from "Gone Hollywood" and "Goodbye Stranger" to "Take the Long Way home" could be baby-boomers-hipster's national anthems. Use of sounds like harmonica, whistling, clarinet and sax, and Hodgson's very searing guitar work, at select times (as in Goodbye Stranger) are reminiscent of the Beach Boys and Beatles as well. This is really glorious pop rock, informed by classical, jazz, and hard rock influences. The beats of the songs measure, very carefully, a kind of hammering, clattering dance beat--this is, as another said, very fun music. Biting social commentary, as well, on the star machine, and consumerist society. These guys had it all, and here they were meshed together tighter than a Toyota six-speed. Rev this thing up and let 'er fly.

When I Was Young...............................................2007-05-05

This is not Supertramps best. Crime Of The Century is the best Supertramp album. But this is still unforgetable music. I do think Supertramp sold out alittle with this album. But at least there music still turned out great(unlike Guns 'n' Roses). The melodies are great, the lyrics are incredably addictive, and it's just really fun to listen to. The reason I only gave this album 4 stars is because of the slight sell-out factor and the fact that there are 2 very weak songs. I just never really liked Gone Hollywood and Oh Darling. They seem like boring, overly long fillers. Thats all the complaints I have. The rest of this album is 24 kt gold. The Logical Song is one of there most popular as it should be. I have never heard so many adjectives in one song. Goodbye Stranger is one of Supertramp's all-time best. So is Breakfest In America(the song). Both of those songs just make you feel all golly and happy. And then when their done, you feel like crap again. Take The Long Way Home is a absolute masterpiece. A very haunting and blue song. Just Another Nervous Wreck is one of the most underrated Supertramp songs ever. That song gets stuck in your head. This whole album gets stuck in your head. Even the songs I did not mention are really good. Overall, a truly enjoyable experience. So what if it's pop rock? WANNA FIGHT ABOUT IT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

And Now I Can't Afford The Pen To Sign Her Checks..........2007-04-11

You should know that it is nearly impossible for me to review this album. So great is my love for this classic that I can only find good things to say about it, and 'review' implies that one is at least partially impartial. How's that for a contradiction in terms? Well, let's get crackin', shall we?

This album has been a part of my life since the first time I switched on the radio in 1979 and heard 'Goodbye Stranger' pouring forth from the tinny speakers of my sisters' transistor. (If I ever started a band I believe I would call it Sisters' Transistor. 'S got a ring to it, don't you agree?) I have owned this in every format it was made available in, with the exception of 8 track, as I was too young to own an 8 track player before they were discredited and laughed off the face of the earth. These tunes have permeated my subconsciousness to such an extent that when I pop this disc in and hit Play I am instantly transported to the late 70s, just as if no time had passed at all. Just as if I could simply call up my buddies and we'd trudge down to Kovac's for a Marathon bar once again. This isn't so much music as it is nostalgia, but I confessed from the outset that I'm not an impartial judge of this recording!

'Gone Hollywood' makes it clear that Supertamp viewed American culture with wry and witty bemusement at best. The previously mentioned 'Goodbye Stranger' features the finest example of whistling to ever appear in pop music coupled with an unforgettable hook, and 'Just Another Nervous Wreck' should have served as an anthem for Underdogs everywhere. If only music this intelligent and durable were still in high demand now! 'Breakfast In America' stands as a snapshot of a vanished musical milieu, but like all genuine classics it transcends it's time and place in order to delight the ears of music lovers of all places and all centuries.

The barest glimpse of John Williams.......2006-08-15

John Williams is one of the world's best guitarists, but you'd never know it by listening to this album. He basically plucks out the melody. I think I hear more complex playing in the background, but if that's what it is, it's mixed so as to be barely audible. On the other hand, it's very nice background music. I hope brisk sales support Williams' more serious efforts.

If I were not a guitarist myself, I would find this collection very very charming. Certainly the selections are beautiful, and Williams is renowned for one of them: Stanley Myers' "Cavatina" from THE DEER HUNTER. It's just that for me this recording does virtually nothing for either the guitar or the lovely pieces selected for this rather peculiar alteration. I'm just not sure that this kind of project, where a virtuoso SOLOIST is brought in to ACCOMPANY an orchestra (Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma have done similar recordings) is a winner; not even five percent of Williams' prodigious technique is anywhere to be heard and he just sounds so irrelevant. (I'd usually expect to hear this kind of thing from Liona Boyd.) That being acknowledged though, the melodies ARE perfectly lovely and Mr. Williams HAS throughout his great career done many brilliant recordings of dense and difficult music that leave one's mouth agape. I suppose he's earned this little vacation.

While this album is pleasant enough, it is more orchestra music than classical guitar. John Williams is a great classical guitarist, but the guitar part on this album could have been played by any competent guitarist. If you want nice background music, this album is ok. If you want classical guitar music, look elsewhere.

This album, back in 1978, seemed like it had fallen from heaven. The production values are gorgeous, resembling the WIlsons' studio work in finesse and brilliance. The songs themselves, from "Gone Hollywood" and "Goodbye Stranger" to "Take the Long Way home" could be baby-boomers-hipster's national anthems. Use of sounds like harmonica, whistling, clarinet and sax, and Hodgson's very searing guitar work, at select times (as in Goodbye Stranger) are reminiscent of the Beach Boys and Beatles as well. This is really glorious pop rock, informed by classical, jazz, and hard rock influences. The beats of the songs measure, very carefully, a kind of hammering, clattering dance beat--this is, as another said, very fun music. Biting social commentary, as well, on the star machine, and consumerist society. These guys had it all, and here they were meshed together tighter than a Toyota six-speed. Rev this thing up and let 'er fly.

This is not Supertramps best. Crime Of The Century is the best Supertramp album. But this is still unforgetable music. I do think Supertramp sold out alittle with this album. But at least there music still turned out great(unlike Guns 'n' Roses). The melodies are great, the lyrics are incredably addictive, and it's just really fun to listen to. The reason I only gave this album 4 stars is because of the slight sell-out factor and the fact that there are 2 very weak songs. I just never really liked Gone Hollywood and Oh Darling. They seem like boring, overly long fillers. Thats all the complaints I have. The rest of this album is 24 kt gold. The Logical Song is one of there most popular as it should be. I have never heard so many adjectives in one song. Goodbye Stranger is one of Supertramp's all-time best. So is Breakfest In America(the song). Both of those songs just make you feel all golly and happy. And then when their done, you feel like crap again. Take The Long Way Home is a absolute masterpiece. A very haunting and blue song. Just Another Nervous Wreck is one of the most underrated Supertramp songs ever. That song gets stuck in your head. This whole album gets stuck in your head. Even the songs I did not mention are really good. Overall, a truly enjoyable experience. So what if it's pop rock? WANNA FIGHT ABOUT IT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

You should know that it is nearly impossible for me to review this album. So great is my love for this classic that I can only find good things to say about it, and 'review' implies that one is at least partially impartial. How's that for a contradiction in terms? Well, let's get crackin', shall we?

This album has been a part of my life since the first time I switched on the radio in 1979 and heard 'Goodbye Stranger' pouring forth from the tinny speakers of my sisters' transistor. (If I ever started a band I believe I would call it Sisters' Transistor. 'S got a ring to it, don't you agree?) I have owned this in every format it was made available in, with the exception of 8 track, as I was too young to own an 8 track player before they were discredited and laughed off the face of the earth. These tunes have permeated my subconsciousness to such an extent that when I pop this disc in and hit Play I am instantly transported to the late 70s, just as if no time had passed at all. Just as if I could simply call up my buddies and we'd trudge down to Kovac's for a Marathon bar once again. This isn't so much music as it is nostalgia, but I confessed from the outset that I'm not an impartial judge of this recording!

'Gone Hollywood' makes it clear that Supertamp viewed American culture with wry and witty bemusement at best. The previously mentioned 'Goodbye Stranger' features the finest example of whistling to ever appear in pop music coupled with an unforgettable hook, and 'Just Another Nervous Wreck' should have served as an anthem for Underdogs everywhere. If only music this intelligent and durable were still in high demand now! 'Breakfast In America' stands as a snapshot of a vanished musical milieu, but like all genuine classics it transcends it's time and place in order to delight the ears of music lovers of all places and all centuries.

Limited edition Japanese pressing of the 1979 album. With Breakfast in America, Supertramp had a genuine blockbuster hit, topping the charts for four weeks in the U.S. and selling millions of copies worldwide; by the 1990s, the album had sold over 18 million units across the world. Although their previous records had some popular success, they never even hinted at the massive sales of Breakfast in America. Then again, Supertramp's earlier records weren't as pop-oriented as Breakfast. The majority of the album consisted of tightly written, catchy, well-constructed pop songs, like the hits 'The Logical Song', 'Take the Long Way Home', and 'Goodbye Stranger.'. Supertramp still had a tendency to indulge themselves occasionally, but Breakfast in America had very few weak moments. It was clearly their high-water mark. A&M. 2005.

Non-Remastered Version from Japan.......2006-09-27

Several decades ago FM was where all the good music was played. AM was all pop, hype and commercials. However, occasionally powerful FM groups crossed from the relative obscurity of FM rock to AM rock, and when they were able to do so while retaining a measure of their artistic values the end result was usually either a killer song or a killer album; "Breakfast in America" is just such an album.

How often do you see reviews raving about how great a song or album is? Very frequently. How often does the hype meet reality? Occasionally. In the case of this album the creativity and originality are incredibly high. A harmonica, clarinet, saxophone, piano and a score of other instruments are combined in a completely unique way with the vocals of two strong lead singers, creative lyrics and music to yield a work of musical art that became Supertramp's biggest seller and among their most readily accessible music.

The vocal duties throughout the album are shared by Roger Hodgson and Richard Davies. The voice differences between the two singers provide a unique vocal contrast well-exploited on songs such as "Gone Hollywood." The music is frequently pop, but the lyrics are highly poetic and complex, and rarely evoke throw away pop lyrics.

The album spawned four hit singles, "The Logical Song," "Goodbye Stranger," "Breakfast in America," and "Take the Long Way Home." While the songs came across as pop, consider "The Logical Song." The complexity of the music shows its progressive rock influence. In one place the lyrics are:

There are times when all the world's asleep,
the questions run too deep
for such a simple man.
won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.

Lyrics such as these are far from throw away pop lyrics and remind us of the progressive roots of Supertramp.

While every song on this CD is a gem, there are a number of unique moments. During "Goodbye Stranger" there is a whistling accompaniment, and the whistling is incredibly pure and beautiful. The harmonica introduction to "Take the Long Way Home" is excellent and well-performed. Very few people would consider the harmonica to be an instrument for a rock song. There are also several places where Supertramp effectively reminds listeners that the piano is a percussion instrument.

As powerful as much of the music is on this CD there are quite a few moments where the instruments are all acoustic and the song is quite mellow. The introduction to "Lord Is It Mine" with quiet singing and piano is one excellent example. Yet the song is decidedly rock.

Given that Supertramp started as a progressive rock group, it would have been unusual to create an album without at least one strongly progressive song; "Child of Vision" is that song. There is an excellent extended bridge in this seven plus minute song where the background music and piano are in counterpoint, and where the piano is once again effectively used as a percussion instrument. This song is my favorite from the CD. However, I enjoy progressive rock and this song is the most clearly progressive song on the CD.

There are moments in musical time where a group passes through a creative point where the music matches the sentiment of a broad range of listeners. Often those moments are when multiple musical styles are combined to create a fresh sound. "Breakfast in America" was one of those moments.

IT'S NOT REMASTERED !.......2006-05-20

This production is not remastered and sound exactly as the first print
of A&M (1990). The current "remastered" version is far away better.
I don't belive that it is a new coming out in Japan even if it's said to be 2005.
Don't spend any money on this limited japanese CD you will be disapointed. The quallity of the sound is simply not there.
