There is a difference between being an inspired musician and an informed musician. Sting is the latter. As always, he surrounds himself with ultratalented artists: this time around Stevie Wonder, Branford Marsalis, James Taylor, guitarist Dominic Miller, and the prince of rai Cheb Mami, fill the roster. Brand New Day exhibits about as many musical styles as there are tracks, all encased in dense, meticulous production. The album begins promisingly. "A Thousand Years" pulses atop a lush, two-note foundation. "A Desert Rose" folds trilling Algerian pop into trip-hop. Melodic, late-night jazz ballads dominate the middle portion of the collection. But Sting's preoccupation with odd-numbered time signatures prevents the songs from grooving, while the choruses are yawns. "Fill Her Up" (no, not "Fill 'Er Up"), a country tune, represents Sting at his most self-indulgent. Listening to one of the wealthiest musicians in pop singing "Got no money to invest / Got no prospect / Or education / I was lucky to get the job at this gas station" requires a heroic suspension of disbelief. The song morphs into this gospel number where Sting and a supporting chorus chant "You gotta fill 'er up with Jesus! / You gotta fill her up with life!" Who knew unleaded could be so rousing? --Beth Massa

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant.......2007-07-12

Jonathans' all so positively inspiring lyrics, outstanding vocal range and capabilites, his brilliant acoustic fluidity and musical arrangement, on Brand New Day, are truely to be admired. Jonathan and all involved take it nice and easy on 'You Are My Everything', 'He Said He Would', 'I Love to Worship', 'Tell Me (Do You Still Love Jesus), I Believe, and the beautiful duet with one of his sweet sounding songbird daughters Jodie, titled 'Mercy'. Jonathan continues his infectious devotion to God with the upbeat memoriable 'O, Magnify The Lord', 'Brand New Day', 'Gonna Lift You Up', 'Let The Redeemed Say So' and 'We Love To Praise Your Name'. This is a wonderful CD, to listen to in your car, or just listen to with your loved ones(children included), in good times or bad. Judiciously absorb each positive word, and note, of Jonathans' 'Brand New Day' and I'm sure you'll agree, it is absolutely brilliant. Thank you God, for Jonathan Butler.

5 out of 5 stars The worship project, too!.......2007-06-16

"Forget all your problems. Forget all your worries;" those are a few words of the title track, "Brand New Day" and after absorbing this spirited musical effort from Jonathan Butler into your spirit, you will find it easier to do just that.

Brand New Day is Jonathan Butler's second full solo offering of inspirational music. The project could have easily been titled "The Worship Project Too" or "The Worship Project 2" for it is a glorious rendering of inspiring and uplifting compositions that I find are love songs to Jesus Christ and music with a message for the rest of us.

The South African born Butler, known in some circles as an accomplished smooth jazz guitarist and vocalist/R&B artist, is absolutely unashamed with sharing his personal relationship with Christ with the masses. Just as he so fervently did on his previous inspirational effort, he again demonstrates his ministry in song here. Butler is more than a guitar playing genius - he is an outstanding vocalist, accomplished writer, arranger and producer. Jonathan is from a very musical family and being the last born of 12 children, it appears that perhaps, God saved the best for last?

Brand New Day offers you 13 wonderful tracks and assisting Jonathan in the production area is the very capable, Luther "Mano" Hanes. who also assisted in the expert engineering of this project. My faves on this work include, "Brand New Day", "Mercy" (featuring Jonathan's daughter, Jodie), "Let The Redeemed Say So", "We Love to Praise Your Name" and " He Said He Would."

Jonathan Butler: "Brand New Day" - a blessing from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite.......2007-01-25

Being the Sting fan that I am. This has become my favorite Sting CD. Aa a matter of fact this is my second copy, I wore out the first one!
There is something on this CD for everyone, every mood and a great long drive CD.

4 out of 5 stars Soothing music.......2007-01-16

How can you not like Sting? I happen to really like this CD. His selections of songs on this CD are great and wonderful to listen to.

3 out of 5 stars Better than what I was anticipating........2006-08-30

However, rather bland sounding at best. I found "A Thousand Years" a rather good piece, "Desert Rose" was decent, but not all that great, the rest was all forgettable, and showed that this was just an excuse to put out an album to fufill a record contract. The album comes to a horrible end with the title track which paralyzed me in depression. I'm not sure wheter the single version, or the album version is worse, but to me I know that anyway you slice it it's just enough to make me cry. I know that pretty much Sting made the comment in 1988 that he didn't give a F**K about rock and roll, but in 1991 he comes back with a more pop sounding album, and it continues in 1993, and in 1996 he comes out with "Mercury Uprising", and it has a rock sound to it, but here he decides he's caught in a lie, and now decides to cover it up with numerous musical influences, and it doesn't wash.

1 out of 5 stars Is Sting worse than Billy Joel ?.......2006-08-22

10 years ago I would have said " no it is impossible for anyone who has not actually committed a serious crime to be worse than Billy Joel". Today I know better. Sting has almost single handedly destroyed the ears and the soul of an entire generation of yuppies.

On the other hand Clapton probably stinks louder than even Sting.

4 out of 5 stars Sting - BRAND NEW DAY (1999).......2006-07-12

Sting seemed to be on a roll in the early 90s, with his masterpiece THE SOUL CAGES and the outstanding TEN SUMMONER'S TALES. Unfortunately, his winning streak ended with 1996's MERCURY FALLING, a pretentious, unextraodinary addition to Sting's musical portfolio. In 1999, however, Sting made his comeback in a big way with BRAND NEW DAY. It was the ex-Police frontman's first venture into techno music, which he would continue to explore on his subsequent release, SACRED LOVE. Along with the exotic "Desert Rose", a surprise smash hit for the 50-something musician, there's a variety of delightful songs, including the hyptonic "A Thousand Years", the irresistible "After The Rain Has Fallen", and the mega-upbeat title tune. The album has a few oddities - "Tomorrow We'll See", about a transvestite hooker, redeemed by its shady bass line, and the cringeworthy, pretentious "Fill Her Up", undoubtedly the worst song of Sting's entire career - but for the most part, it's a delightful melding of jazz, alt rock and techno. Over thirty years after a band called The Police burst on to the music scene, Sting still rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Not my favorite Sting Album..........2005-01-21

That would be Ten Summoner Tales, but this one ranks up there. This is another album that Sting seems to want to have fun on while some of the songs are a little more serious than Ten Summoner Tales. The mix of music is pretty good, ranging from Middle Eastern to Country. The lyrics are excellent (as always). My favorite song is "Brand New Day" because it gives a nice positive message.

The SACD mix on this album is amazing. Sting never sounded better. Makes the album come alive and seem like STing is right in the living room. The 5.1 mix is very well done. Just wish they would do the same for Ten Summoners Tales.

5 out of 5 stars Finally and Fulfilling!.......2005-10-28

Believe the hype, _Shining_ fans. These bits and pieces of music - volume 1 focuses more on "studio music and textures" of the themes devised for the film while volume 2 spends its allotted tracks on the more fully developed orchestra tracks - hold just about everything. I'll encourage you to follow that impulse/interest and add this work to your collection.

What do you get? Well, for me, the treat was volume 2's first track - the film's title track - Ms Carlos explains why Kubrick nixed it - but it is as haunting as the final draft that follows Jack Torrance's lil yellow bug to The Overlook climbing the Rockies. The other tracks are renderings and attempts to put the novel into music forms. The liner notes are great - like a listening session over coffee with the composer.

Both volumes are must haves for those of us all agog over the film's score (and scoring possibilities) but if you just want to hold a haunting, get volume 2 and put track one on repeat until you, that hag hottie in the tub, or your six year old's index finger hollers, "redrum!"

5 out of 5 stars Settling Old Scores.......2005-10-10

This second volume of Wendy's lost film soundtracks concentrates more on her full orchestral scores. Although she achieved fame as a synthesist, one reason she succeeded so well is her knowledge of and attention to timbral colors and the placement of different voices -- in short, orchestration. It should come as little surprise therefore that when writing for a full orchestra she's fully accomplished and impressively skilled.

Synthesizer cues are also included, from early (1981) novelty demonstrations for Dolby Labs to later (1998) soundtrack work utilizing her state-of-the-art digital synthesizers.

As usual for her, voluminous liner notes detail not only the working methods behind each of the pieces, but also glimpses into the politics and disappointments that delayed the release of these tracks. How many composers could survive having a significant portion of their career locked away in a vault for 25 years?

4 out of 5 stars Stand Out Rose.......2006-06-27

Arguably for so many artists, the songs have to be vital to what makes them good or bad on the radio and television. For somebody like Sting, he has been one of the most definitive, and meloncollie singer/songwriters of all time. His songs today like Every Breath You Take still capture hearts everywhere. His 2000 single, Desert Rose, the second track from his album Brand New Day is one of the most infectious and driven songs of the past several years. The song is not just upbeat, it is hypnotic to Sting & Cheb Mami's vibes. I still love this song today, because it is just great to dance to, and a joy to still hear today. I just honestly wish Sting can come back with another record soon. His songs are very unique.

Song: B+

4 out of 5 stars The only song by Sting I like.......2004-11-30

I have to confess, I am not a fan of Sting's music (with or without The Police). The one song I really do like by Sting is the Arabic influenced "Desert Rose", a duet with Cheb Mami who is a big artist in the Arab world. I loved the blending of western and world music. I bought this single primarily for "Desert Rose". I honestly did not care for the remixes for "Brand New Day", let alone the song itself. I do wish that I bought the import version which included the Victor Calderone remix of "Desert Rose". The Melodic Club Mix radio edit of "Desert Rose" was not bad but like I said, I wished I had the Victor Calderone remix instead. Still I must say that the Melodic Club Mix radio edit didn't alter the melodies like a lot of remixes have been done in the past. The song still has that beautiful melody that I fell in love with. Too bad Sting's other songs following "Desert Rose" lacked the punch that "Desert Rose" had.

5 out of 5 stars Victor Calderone's Mix Is Absolutely Flawless!........2004-05-11

This is probably Sting's best dance tune-- throughout his entire career. There are 5 tracks included on this (Import) Maxi-single with 3 versions of ''Desert Rose''' and two versions of ''Brand New Day'' including the ''Murlyn Mix''.

''Brand New Day'' is a great song too-- but it's definitely ''Desert Rose'' you're looking out for, I guess.

Seeing that the collaborations with foreign vocalist Cheb Mami and with producer Victor Calderone make it one hell of a great song, dance or not...It's flawless. As well as the video was definitely one of the hottest videos that made a great intro for the year 2000 along with J Lo's ''Waiting For Tonight''.

This song definitely showcases a strong Arabic sort of North African/Eastern influence. The Album version is great but it is definitely Victor Calderone's ''Melodic Club Mix'' that got the song running N'1 on the Billboard\Dance Charts. It begins with a dramatic and wispy drum influenced entrance for the song, as it gradually work it's way through, while the beats become more prominent as Cheb Mami's perfect chanting kicks in, the song then takes it's time to work it's way to Sting's first verse, his voice also sounds very deep on this track. Soon after the vocals take a back seat, the violin strings make a great contribution to the song as it turns into a effect that builds up to Sting's determined and stirring vocals again. EXCELLENT MIX!!.

This is one of Victor Calderone's most flawless mixes ever-- along with the excellent drum mix he did for Madonna's ''Ray Of Light''.

I recommend Madonna's ''Ray Of Light (CD Single)'' in addition to this, if you liked Calderone's mix of ''Desert Rose'', then I'm absolutely positive that you'll like the mix he did for Madonna with ''Ray Of Light'' as it is something similar to this but strip away the eastern formula and add a tribal formula instead.

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Foreign Cheb Mami Makes This Song.......2001-09-29

What grab me about this song with Cheb Mami's smooth Alegerian voice. I was waching a music channel on television and wasn't really paying attention to the song or to Sting very much until Cheb started singing his foreign verses to the fast pace violins that accompanied him. It was very beautiful - reminded me of Indian or Middle Eastern New Age music. The rest of the song, after I decided to hear the whole song, is equally intense in the instrumental parts. I love the violens and arrangement of the music. They violins and drums sounded great together, almost hypnotic with Cheb Mami's voice, but Stings voice is really kind of blured, or mubbled. You can't really decipher his words, except for the chorus, and a nice chorus it is.

There are two versions of this song on the CD single. One is the regular radio version, and the other is the faster pace, melodic, somewhat of a dance version.

What I didn't like about the CD was the other song that was decidedly put to accompany it - Brand New Day. This song didn't match in intensity and style, and unfornately, Desert Rose overshadows Brand New Day. The background singers stand out in the second song, their strong voices give it more of a R&B or jazzy feel and spices it up, but this is a song that never grew on me.

5 out of 5 stars Sting is inspired!.......2000-10-30

This is a great CD, the cut Desert Rose is almost like a victory song for those who live in the midst of the sands of life. I always thought Sting was a thoughtful essayist in his lyrics and his talent has caught my ear eversince his first successful single "Every Breath You Take". There's a genius in his music, and in the play of words of his songs. This CD has been a frequent background to some of my own "workouts" whether in just walking briskly across a "field of gold" or doing a few "military arts moves" in the silence of my living room. Desert Rose is just uplifting, and gives a spirit of victory to the mind.

See, I'm going to write a song called, "SHE'E THE ONE" , in this field. Those that know can say, without arrogant actions, she can come ON ANYBODY if she really wanted. She is annionted, and although SWV was trying to go against her 5 years ago on one of the awards shows... you can't mess with Vanessa. Who are these people ? She's been running for Jesus a LONG TIME, like she's been running her vocal chords just as long. Many are called, but few are chosen, certainly Vanessa Bell Armstrong is that....
Vanessa has been given a review by one of the Worlds Best Oprah who said, "I DON'T CARE WHO YOU ARE, AND HOW WELL YOU SING, YOU WILL NEVER, EVER, OUT SING VANESSA BELL ARMSTRONG". Vanessa is one "MINISTER" that has been versitle enough to sing anything...
When you hear Vanessa, you hear nothing but HOLINESS... I will certainly say that she has not recieved nearly as much as she deserves... But she is cetainly "BRINGS OUT THE BEST" in any song... "KEEP PRESSIN' ON VANESSA"

Vanessa Bell Armstrong 2001 "A Brand New Day" Cd On`Tommy Boy Gospel',The Cd Is Good,Vanessa Has Her Baby Girl Melody On There Singing With Her,However, Vanessa Bell Armstrong Is Getting Older And Has Gone Thru Alot Of 'Issues' Since Her Last Project On John Prince Kee Label Verity,She Still Has A Voice Thats One In A Million!!! I Belive That Vanessa Bell Armstrong Was Promoted Better When She Was On "Jive" Record Label,Which She Needs To Go Back Too And Forget About -_-!!!
Viewing Bobby Jones Gospel In '99 When Vanessa Face Was Twisted,No Doubt "He's Real" And '98 Vanessa Bell Armstrong God-Child DD,Production Manger Slipped & Fall On Her Other Job,Now DD Spin Is Twisted,But DD Has Kept Her "Promise" & "Holding On","Doing What He Said"!!!
"Jesus I'll Never Forget",The Video "Somebody Prayed For Me" Boosted The Song Up The Charts!!!
The Only Part I Dislike About "A Brand New Day" Is The Birds On The Cd Cover!!!
Why Would Anybody In There Right Mind Put Birds On A Gospel Cd Cover Like That,Body Twisted And The Birds ~ Going Up!!!

4 out of 5 stars Solid set from VBA, produced by Min. Deitrick Haddon........2002-06-08

No, this is NOT another "Desire of My Heart," but I hope she does something like that again soon. Think of this as her new millenium version of "Something on the Inside," and you've got the spirit of this CD.

The title track has a good groove and is repetitive in the current vein. "Do What He Said" is classic, churchy, squalling Vanessa. The rest of the album is good material that will grow on you after a few listens, which means you'll appreciate this album for a while. Minister Deitrick Haddon's production is good (but not great in some spots), and Nessa's voice is in fine form throughout. It's almost impossible to realize that she is nearly 50 -- she sounds as though she's in her 20's on many of these cuts! Amazingly versatile.

It's ironic that the title of this album is "Brand New Day;" and the company that issued this album (Tommy Boy Gospel) folded recently. Hopefully, another label will pick up Vanessa and showcase her talent the way that Verity did with the live album. In the meantime, "Brand New Day" will water your soul, with the unique talents of the incomparably gifted Vanessa Bell Armstrong.

5 out of 5 stars You are definitely my baby.......2002-03-21

i played this cd to death, you never cease to amaze me
this album is uplifting, moving and simply touching
everyone that i let hear this album, they couldn't believe that this was an older lady killing it the way she was. you feel because she's been in the business since the 80's you feel that she will loose it and wouldn't know how to adapt to the new sound. the woman is singing it as if she as be singing in the new style all her life i love every track You go girl. you are simply anointed
and anything you sings touches my heart

1 out of 5 stars I've Been Stung.......2002-04-18

I think I own most every Sting / Police release, so you'd surely need to categorize me as a Sting fan. Because I enjoy his music so much, I braved the hefty price believing I must have it.

It was a woeful disappointment for me, however. The disc consists of elongated versions of just a handful of Sting tunes set to drum-machine-produced club beats. I'm not into the club scene and actually enjoy Sting for the variety of world beats he incorporates into his music, so this really rubbed a nerve with me. I really didn't need the 3 disco versions of "Desert Rose" that this CD features.

This CD is gonna collect dust.

4 out of 5 stars Strictly for Sting purists..........2000-12-19

If you enjoyed Brand New Day, you will enjoy this collector's item, simple as that. It is pricey but entirely worth it for the 12+ minute remix of "A Thousand Years." The new Indian/Middle Eastern percussion track gives the song new life. Perfect Love Gone Wrong sounds basically the same except for a few more horns and the female rap is in Japanese instead of French. The rest of the remixes are nothing out of the ordinary but atleast they're all here on one cd if you don't want to collect all the CD singles from this album.

After a while, although some of the songs sound the same, it grows on you. This, being my favorite childhood book, thrilled me to no end. The singers: great. The music: fun. The jokes: hilarious.

Worth it! Very much so!
