The way I see it, Ashlee Simpson does the kind of rock music that people like Pat Benatar used to do during her heyday in the 1980's: Hard-edged, in-your-face stuff that's backed up with intelligent writing. And that voice???!!! WOAH!!! It just BLOWS ME AWAY!!! This is one DAMN good artist!! This is one DAMN good record!! I never get tired of listening to it!!

Ashleee Simpson is trying way to hard to look hot and PUNK!W=She's not any of them!she tries to compete with Avril Laivnge and act so punk and tough and she's not!The only reason she made it big and people bought her cd's is becuase she gives off a FAKE presonality and has a popstar for a sister.Jessica Simpson and the fake punk personality is the only reason she got a cd sold and got another one!Yes,if you see her getting interviews she is really nice but does that matter in the fish eats fish popworld she is associated in.She is not considered punk for all the real punk singers.Now Avril Lavigne has been mocked for saying she was punk atleast once but come on,Avril actually was being true and real before that and she rocks and no longer does she calll herself punk!Ahley however does act fake!.She acts like she is so hardcore but she is NOT!She tries so hadr to look punk and act it but listen to her music!All it sounds like is quick and worthless,thoughtless,and fake penned down lyrics on her hand kind of lyrics.It's like something she does in her spare time and when she is waiting in line somewhere.The fakeness of her really makes you angry at her,it get's annoying!The only good song maybe is "Pieces."But that's becuase it was he single from the album.And the album might as well be called "I'm Fake so please think I am all punk and stuff!"That's because she tried so hard to look different and be an outcast to her popstar sister,Jesiics Simpson.If she would have just been herself,we would have actually like her but we all can tell she is being fake.ANd who gave her a record deal anyway?She has a really scratchy voice and tries to hard to get lyrics that sound punk.She may think that her scratchy voice makes her sound punk but it doesn't at all!This cd is a waste of time and money and is nothing to listen to.Maybe the only song I actually like is "Giving it All Away" becuase that is as deep it gets on this album.Who knows what else she can create!She has two albums so far.Maybe she will finaly be herself!The album was a dissapointer and waste of my time and asking my relative to get it for me.It sucked but they don't know so I jsut act like I enjoyed it.

This is truly unexpected. Her debut album has great songs in in, and non of them is skipable for me, if you are interested then go buy it, it is such a nice album !! Ashlee's albums must be on your collection list. Dont listen to the negative review, they dont raelly write about the product, they give bad review because they hate Ashlee, they hate Ashlee because they have no spirit of love in their life. This CD shows AShlee really can sing and her voice is awesome!

Ashlee Simpson's "Autobiography" is Suprisingly Good.......2006-12-03

Give Ashlee Simpson some credit -- she (or her management) knew that the only way to break out of the shadow of her older sister, Jessica, was to be her opposite. So, she dyed her blonde hair jet-black, based her music in rock, not dance-pop, and co-wrote every song on her 2004 debut, Autobiography (Jessica only co-wrote one on her debut, Sweet Kisses). It could be argued that this makeover for the star of the square WB TV series 7th Heaven is a bit too calculated, but regardless of the intent, the end result still works far better than that of her big sister's albums. Where Jessica sounds like a throwback to the late '60s/early '70s, specifically to the variety shows of Andy Williams and Sonny & Cher, Ashlee is modern, using the glossy, punky pop of Pink and Avril Lavigne as the touchstone for her debut. It's heavy on guitars and light on dance beats, although those are bubbling under the layers and layers of six-strings, and Ashlee has adopted a growl that may come out closer to a mousey squeak, but the attitude is appreciated all the same. And that pretty much sums up Autobiography -- it's not perfect, and it's often affected, but it winds up being endearing because of her earnestness. Not only is she trying hard -- and, in the case of "Lala," trying way too hard to be sexy -- but she's succeeding in creating an album that feels like a bubblegum version of Pink's M!ssundaztood, even if it's not quite as catchy. While the album could have used a few more songs with indelible hooks, it nevertheless is an enjoyably slick, widescreen production that's a whole lot more fun than anything her sister has recorded (with the notable exception of "I Think I'm in Love With You"), plus it's varied enough to suggest that Ashlee could make a more interesting record the next time out. All in all, it's an unexpectedly strong debut from an artist who seemed destined to be a footnote to her famous older sister, but just may wind up with a more interesting career.

This is really hysterical. It's hard to pick my fav track, but I'd have to say that Vicodinland is the one that makes me laugh the hardest! This CD is one of the most popular with our family to listen to while driving.

My son borrowed it the other night and accidentally broke it when his boombox fell over on it. It's being replaced asap!

Bill Engvall, perhaps one of the funniest comedians on the planet, has done it again with Cheap Drunk. This album is clean, just like all of his other ones. I would suggest that if you have never heard any of his albums, do not start with this album, go ahead and get Here's Your Sign, then Dorkfish, then Now That's Awesome, and then get Cheap Drunk. He is a very funny man, with hilarious material. Go out and get all of his albums today.

I just had to have this CD ASAP!! It is a must-have! The first time I listened to this CD, I laughed really hard, and it gets funnier every time I listen to it, just like his other CDs! That Bill tops himself every time! He just gets funnier!

It seems that Sticky Fingaz has experienced something of an epiphany. On Black Trash, the former lead screamer of Onyx has found humility and a metaphysical alter ego, Kirk Jones, an unrepentant player whose short life and death is related on this record in wide-screen psychodrama. But have no fear, Sticky Fingaz may have developed a cerebral edge but he's as raucous and rowdy as ever. Among the other superstar actors on this boom-bap teleplay is Raekwon, who features on the hook to the introspective Rockwilder-produced "Money Talks." Rah Digga plays a formidably frosty judge on the courtroom drama "State vs. Kirk Jones," while (as defending attorney) Redman fails to keep his client from the clink. Eminem provides the honky chorus on the operatic "What If I Was White," in which Kirk muses what would happen if is he was the "color of cocaine." Fellow Onyx thug Fredro Starr (now known as Firestarr) appears on the fiery "Get It Up." Once Kirk reaches his predicted (sticky) end, Mr. Fingaz is left with the realization that "it's easier to get a gun than an education" before unexpectedly breaking into a faithful rendition of Louis Armstrong's "Wonderful World"; a fitting conclusion to this ghetto cabaret. --Chris Campion

Sticky Fingaz' 2001 solo debut "Blacktrash: The Autobiography of Kirk Jones" is one of my absolute favorite hip hop albums of all time. Start to finish this record is simply phenomenal and unlike anything I have ever heard. As great as Onyx is, this album showed what a genius Sticky Fingaz is and the music he is capable of. "Blacktrash" plays like a movie, telling a chronicling story of the life of a criminal. There is so much emotion throughout the album that it really makes me emotional every time I listen to it, and it totally engrosses me. Following the journey of Kirk Jones through his troubles with the law, relationships, financial difficulty, desperation, and depression is a roller coaster ride, sometimes sad and depressing, humorous, frustrating, but overall just amazing. The phenomenal list of guest performers (Blackchild, Raekwon, X1, Still Livin, Rah Digga, Redman, Canibus, Scarred 4 Life, Lord Superb, Guess Who, Dave Hollister, Petey Pablo, Eminem, Fredro Starr, and Columbo the Shining Star) provide a cast of well-played characters, including family members, friends, accomplices, an entire court, and even God himself. Actor Omar Epps plays the role of a narrator. The production comes from New York producers including Rockwilder and others, and the music is consistently excellent. I cannot recommend this album enough. I just love this album so much.

After an intro that sets the scene well, the album begins with "Come On," a hard-hitting screamer that will recall the Onyx albums of the past. "My Dogz Iz My Gunz" is awesome, an excellently-produced angry song describing Kirk's tendency towards weapons. "Not Die'N" speaks of Jones's inability to die because of his state in life. "Money Talks" is excellent. Wu-Tang legend Raekwon and Sticky rap metaphorically from the point of view of money itself, an ingeniously concepted song. "Why" is a highlight, the song that profiles the conversations that Kirk and his accomplice have during a jewelry robbery and how their arguments lead to their ultimate downfall. The great beat and hook make this song a completely awesome track. "Oh My God" is the conversation a desperate Kirk Jones has with God. This song is phenomenal. He asks God questions about life and the answers really make you think. Probably my favorite point of the story is "State Vs. Kirk Jones," which portrays an intense court proceeding through rhymes. Rah Digga is an angry Judge Battle, and Redman plays Kirk's unqualified lawyer. This is an awe-inspiring and very effective song the likes of which I have never heard. "Baby Brother" is beautiful musically. The song is a telephone conversation that Kirk has with his brother from jail, making the painful realization that his sibling "will end up just like me." Dave Hollister makes an inspired appearance. "Cheatin'" and "Whatchu Want" show an angry and depressed Kirk and his mentality. "Ghetto" is an entertaining track showing the philosophy of people in the ghetto, and "What If I Was White" wonders how life would be different were he Caucasian, with Eminem on the hook. Kirk struggles to apologize on the heartfelt "Sister I'm Sorry," and the energetic "Get It Up" follows. After "Licken Off in Hip Hop," the album ends beautifully with a cover of Louie Armstrong's "Wonderful World." This ending really sums up Kirk's sad life and demise, and has a lot of inspiring moments.

"Blacktrash" is one of the most remarkable works of music I have ever heard. This album is embarrassingly underrated and should be considered a classic the likes of the legendary hip hop albums. A concept album has never been executed so perfectly as "Blacktrash." I think all kinds of music fans will love this album as I have for so long.

This album is probably my favourite... the whole album is made to tell the story of Kirk Jones and talks about all kind of different subjects... Sticky is the man... If you ain't got it go get it! My mom actually lost my album but F it i'm buying a new one... it's worth the price !

i knew it would be good but sticky has outdone himself this is his finest moment compared to all the onyx joints this has to be the best album and i have heard them all and fredro is my favorite member of the group its one of those albums that u can play straight through evertime there are some good collaborations with artists like raekwon, X1, Redman, rah digga, petey pablo and eminem if you like onyx or gangsta rap buy it and you will not be disappointed

There have been plenty of Rosemary Clooney best-of compilations, but few highlight the depth and diversity of the vocalist as does Songs from the Girl Singer. Billed as a musical autobiography, this double-CD companion to Clooney's written autobiography illustrates the stylized but varied and spunky career of the singer, from her earliest works to her most recent. Some of the highlights include "Sooner or Later," Clooney's first solo performance from 1946, which features the sultry 17-year-old singer dueting with bandleader Tony Pastor; 1950's "Peach Tree Street," with Clooney and Frank Sinatra collaborating for the first time; and on 1951's "Come On-a My House" we can hear the ultra-catchy, folksy tune that first brought Clooney acclaim (and the cover of Time), an astonishing triumph for a number she initially refused to sing. Fast-forward and we get even more gems ("Hey There," "White Christmas," "The White Cliffs of Dover," to name just a few). Whether singing solo or with Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, or Duke Ellington, Clooney shines here--there aren't any duds in this collection. Great career-spanning collection.......2004-05-20

The first notes of the first disc engage the listener, with Clooney's powerful yet clear voice. But, at the risk of offending some of her fans, I actually prefer Disc 2. The generic sweetness of her voice is replaced with a voice of a woman who's a few years older, a few years wiser. Her now-gravelly voice makes each song her own, and the raw emotion is so much more moving than the songs of her early days. No matter how you slice it, they just don't make 'em like Rosemary anymore. She is sadly missed, and she's completely irreplaceable. We love ya', Rosemary.

Sundays in the park with George's Aunt.......2002-08-31

Rosemary Clooney's life wasn't all a picnic in the Park. I got this CD set while reading her book: "Girl Singer: an Autobiography. (Like Girranimals, the similarly titled companion pieces have the same picture on the front so that the purchaser will know that they go together.) This was quite a treat - like a read-and sing-along with Mitch Miller (who appears in the book - he "made" Rosemary sing "Come On-a My House," the song that elevated her national stardom, despite her concern that it was too silly a song to sully herself with! ;-)

The songs included here are representative of Rosemary's varied and legendary career. My only quibble is that I would have preferred the version of "White Christmas" with Bing and the cast of the movie. Listen to this set anytime, anywhere. Buy it, you'll like it!

A cardboard fold-out (at least no broken jewel cases) with a booklet insert, this double-album is a retrospective guaranteed to appeal to those who have read Rosemary's autobiography as well as those whose points of reference are both the 1950's hitmaker and the later discriminating stylist. If your primary interest, though, is in Rosemary the musician, for early Rosemary go with "Blue Rose," her album done with Duke Ellington for Columbia; for later Rosemary, go with the Concord Heritage Album, a collection of her very best work for that label.

Praise for a wonderful lady.......2002-03-22

This 2CD set takes the listener through the career of Rosemary Clooney, including the "hokey" 50's as well as the mellow jazz renditions with Nelson Riddle and Duke Ellington. This album looks like it will get worn out on my CD player. I will be playing it for decades. Noone sings with more musical eloquence than Rosy.

Clooney tunes from start to finish.......2001-10-20

This is a great compilation of Clooney's work over the many decades she's been recording. The first cut, Sooner or Later, is far too sexy and suggestive for the young age she must have been when recording it. Wow! And it just keeps getting better from there.

Originally released in 1957 as a four-LP set, Satchmo: A Musical Autobiography is a fitting reissue for the Armstrong centenary, an ambitious collaboration between Armstrong and producer Milt Gabler. Gabler was one of the great pioneers of jazz recording, from setting up the first independent label, Commodore, to producing Armstrong and Billie Holiday for Decca. For these marathon mid-'50s recordings, he had Armstrong revisit the early years of his career, from his youth in New Orleans--there's a comic recreation of a funeral parade--through the extraordinary first decade of his recording career that spanned from 1923 to the early '30s. Armstrong touches on his work with King Oliver's band and the great blues singers of the period, his association with Fletcher Henderson, and his own marvelous Hot Five and Hot Seven dates. Gabler may have caught him at the perfect moment. Armstrong had recently made the superb Plays W.C. Handy and Plays Fats Waller, he had a fine working band in the All-Stars, and he was still the magnificent trumpeter who had revolutionized music just three decades before. Armstrong's spoken introductions--with sparkling accompaniments by pianist Billy Kyle--are a delight, invoking the personalities and scenes of his youth with a unique charm. While these performances lack the newly minted genius of the originals, they strike a happy balance between fidelity to the originals and a fresh look at the material, with the small group tracks arranged by Bob Haggart and the big band by Sy Oliver. Tunes like "Struttin' with Some Barbecue" and "On the Sunny Side of the Street" are imbued with as much spirit and grace as ever, and Armstrong gets tremendous support. Trumpeter Yank Lawson is an appropriate stand-in for King Oliver, emulating his mute work when the occasion demands, while Velma Middleton is more than competent in the thankless task of singing songs associated with Bessie Smith. What a fantastic music. Back in 1971 my father gave me this album (of course the old, LP, vinyl, monophonic records). It was love at first sight (well, ear). With the advent of CD's and all the digital formats I had forgotten this terrific album until, by chance, I came upon it in Amazon (now a magnificent 3CD set)

Sound quality is excellent and the set comes with a beautiful booklet. Printed information as an album companion is one great loss of the CD format so this nice booklet is certaily very welcome. My only "complaint" is that the CD's come packed in an atractive but very inconvenient cardboard sleeves which form a foldable album. The records are difficult to manipulate and soon scratches began to appear on my records so I put them in normal plastic boxes.

These records are the my 2005 discovery and I could not be happier.

An embarrassment to Louis and those who claim to love him.......2004-02-14

Has anyone bothered to actually listen to this in the decades since it was issued? Louis dutifully reads the yowsah-yowsah dialogue that was written for him by an Englishman and plays beautifully when given the chance. Velma Middleton's vocals are horrible--she shows off her perfect diction with little regard for the emotional content or key (on "Trouble in Mind" she and the band sound at least a continent and a half step apart.) George Barnes' electric guitar on the Hot Fives is equally grotesque: did Milt Gabler or Bob Haggart owe him something? The modernist Charlie Christian, had he still been alive, would have made the same instrument fit in. Yank Lawson and the various All Stars are fine, and the big band arrangements are as good as or better than the originals. The set came out during the ascendancy of Mitch Miller at a rival label, and I'm thankful that it exists at all. But to accept it as a fair representation of Louis's career is to do him a great disservice.

Thinking that this sessions would never be released, I bought one year ago the Mosaic set including these recordings. Now,the miracle appears, at a lower price,and including all the sessions known as the marathon-like "musical autobiography" of Louis Armstrong.Louis (1900,or 1901- 1971) had already written some of jazz's most glorious pages before 1930. In the middle of the fifties, he had the opportunity to record all these tunes once again.The personnel is a little bit different of the classic "allstars" of the same years (see the W.C.Handy and the Fats Waller albums on Columbia) : Trummy Young, the great and little known Edmond Hall,George Barnes,Bob Haggart,Billy Kyle, Velma Middleton,Hilton Jefferson,Seldon Powell,Everett Barksdale,Sy Oliver,Lucky Thompson.The group plays all the hits Louis made in the twenties: "you rascal you","king of the zulus","dear old southland","cornet shop suey","potato head blues"(do you know the 1927 version of this theme,one of the craziest things ever done in music).There are also, of course,great vocals by Satch, and great vocals by Velma Middleton,a singer who has been so much despised by the "critics",these guys who never played a single note,but who know everything about music and art.And there is, for me, an absolute masterpiece: a version of "two deuces",a tune Louis originally did in 1929.A model of great trumpet playing,and of moderation.There is no unnecesserary note in this tune, only mastery and absolute control of the instrument. This way of playing is very close to another stylist and outstanding trumpet player, Doc Cheatham; and, also, maybe Buck Clayton,Bill Coleman and the immense Shorty Baker.Pardon me, I have derived from the subject, but if you like Louis,I urge you to discover Shorty in the Ellington band,Buck in his owns and Doc in any record he did during his 75 years of playing.Coming back to Satchmo's autobiography,this is,after the Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings of the twenties,a record set you have to buy in priority.But, if you don't have now the money for purchasing it, you can start with the two Columbia albums he did in 1954 and 1955:"Satch plays Fats",dedicated to the great Thomas "Fats" Waller,and the immense "plays W.C.Handy",mostly hanging around the blues.

Great album very underrated........2006-07-14

This cd definitely needs to be re-released.
It came out when cassettes were still selling & it wasn't common to have a cd player in the car.
With that, most of this album's sales were via cassette.
By now, I'd be willing to bet that the cassettes that were purchased are all either broken or warped beyond use.

YOU NEED TO RE-RELEASE THIS ALBUM SO THAT ALL ORIGINAL CASSETTE OWNERS CAN BUY IT AGAIN... this album was & is great, I definitely would re-purchase it.

Chuck D goes solo, hits a homer.......2002-05-03

Public Enemy, seminal hip hop group and instrumental in breaking the art form into the mainstream, came to an end with a very typical, but sad story. The group split, its many talented members pursued solo projects, and none of them ever went anywhere. Chuck D should have been the exception to this, and this album is the proof.

"Autobiography of Mistachuck" is first rate hip hop. Chuck still has his voice and he still has his poetry, but he brings it to a much funkier and more soulful musical style than was ever used by Public Enemy. It's a strong solo release, and it should have attracted more commerical success than it did. Check tracks 1, 3, 4, 5, 10 and 12. 1, 5 and 10 are great!

The hip hop scene is notoriously fickle. Figures of great talent rise and fall faster than in any other genre of music, disappearing of the radar screen to all but those who appreciate the old school. Gangster rap was still in full effect in the mid 90s, when this album was released. I think Chuck D acknowledges this plain fact of doing business in Track 1, with a sample from "Clockers." However, don't confuse the real thing with the LA gansta wannabes ... Chuck D's "Autobiography of Mistachuck" is the bomb!

I'm a Big time Public Enemy Fan.but this disc really doesn't hit the spot.The Lyrics and Music really never hit.His Voice is still forceful but the material isn't happening.

Hardcastle From Cover To Cover.......2005-04-08

As Paul Hardcastle himself admits in the album's liner notes, "Cover To Cover" isn't so much a "Greatest Hits" package as it is a study, if you like, of the man's music and his musical personality. Disc One is a mixture of hits, rare tracks and previously unreleased songs from Paul's archives, while Disc Two is entirely made up of cover songs, some of them re-mixed, while others are previously unreleased. Disc One has such Hardcastle favorites as "Rainforest," "19" (though with a different mix), "King Tut," and "Jokers Wild" (also re-mixed), as well as some rare goodies like the wonderful song, "Could It Be Forever" (featuring vocalist Helen Rogers), which had only been previously available on Japanese import, and great new tracks like "Urban Vibes," "Paradise Cove" and "Crystal Seas." Paul is no slouch at cover songs either, and Disc Two shows off his skills in this department, with such cool covers as "Walk In The Night," Steely Dan's "Do It Again" (with a slower re-mix), Barry White's "Love Theme," Pink Floyd's "Money" (also re-mixed a bit), "Green Onions," and Stevie Wonder's "Superstition." Great, sparkling music all the way from the King Of Smooth Jazz. If you're a big Paul Hardcastle buff like I am, then purchasing "Cover To Cover" is a total no-brainer. Groove on, Brother Paul!

Covers a huge spectrum of Hardcastles amazing music.......2003-04-05

Hardcastle has had a fascinating career during the 80s and 90s and has sold over 10 Million albums worldwide! Thatýs an accomplishment! This collection of 23 of Hardcastleýs songs from 1984 though 1997 is a very odd but absolutely interesting collection of songs spanning two CDs. This collection is not a ýGreatest Hitsý nor a ýBest Ofý collection as Hardcastle himself says in the CD booklet although this album does contain some of his best work of his entire career. Overall, fans of his smooth jazz oriented music that heýs known for nowadays might be somewhat thrown off by some of the songs on this collection especially on disc two.

A large portion of the album is dedicated to taking songs from his 80s albums ýNo Winnersý, and ýSound Syndicatedý, both of which have been out of print for many years and have little chance of re-issue as of current. While some of the songs might be considered ýfillerý, that does not mean they donýt belong on here. Quite the opposite, it was a very smart decision to give some of Hardcastleýs long lost works a new lease on life, particularly ýKing Tutý and ýIt Seems To Hang Oný. The latter song I mentioned is a truly mesmerizing cover of the Ashford and Simpson classic and itýs a stunning danceable mix of dance and smooth jazz. I must say that few, if any, mixed these two styles of music the way Hardcastle did with this song. Itýs truly an honor to bring this song back to life on this collection. The cover version of ýGreen Onionsý is amazing too, being a danceable song. There are more either previously unreleased or long out of print songs on this collection. ýKing Tutý especially comes to mind as itýs probably the oldest song that Hardcastle has ever recorded and it never made it onto CD, domestically and as an import, until this 2 CD set was released.

This collection also brings some of Paulýs most popular songs onto here. ýRainforestý is a song that is well-known by both the older fan base, those who remember him for the innovative use of electronic recording and sampling equipment, and the younger or newbie fan base that knows his more smooth jazz-oriented music he has done both solo and with his band The Jazzmasters during the 1990s. ýRainforestý is a totally unforgettable classic that blends dance and smooth jazz in a way that makes it so engaging and fresh even with 18 years removed from itýs release. It still hear this song quite often on the radio and itýs considered one of the most popular jazz songs of modern times and it deserves the attention it gets. The other song that heýs known for is the disturbing and chilling dance number ý19ý. This song isnýt one just to enjoy, it also tells the shocking story of the average age of the Vietnam soldier being only 19 years old! This song is one that will change your life forever! It was also one of the earliest songs to use samples from a voice recording.

This album doesnýt exactly yank any songs off his 90s albums in their original form but instead takes the songs from those albums and remixes them in a way that they have a totally different vibe from their parent album version available on the Hardcastles I, II, and III albums so they are all must-haves even if you purchase this collection. ýJokerýs Wildý from the ýHardcastle IIý album is an awesome, danceable and funky number with a chaotic atmosphere that somewhat harkens back to Hardcastleýs dance music days during the 1980s. The remix of the song on this collection is a mellower and more subdued smooth jazz sound but is in fact better than the original with itýs better flow of rhythm. The same holds true with his cover of Steely Danýs ýDo It Againý. The version on Hardcastle I is funky and upbeat. The version on ýCover To Coverý is much mellower and sensual and I must say this is the better version with itýs more soulful feel in my opinion.

ýAre You Readyý may be the song thatýll throw off the ýsmooth jazzý Hardcastle fan base audience as this song is a fast paced upbeat dance song that he recorded in the late 80s or early 90s and features a female vocal with incredible dymatics. Those who like the New Jack Swing or early 90s techno sound will likely enjoy this song a lot. I think that itýs one of the highlights of this album.

The newly recorded songs (as of 1997) are geared towards his smooth jazz audience. ýSoul Swingý is the most unique of the songs. It starts off being a typical jazzy Hardcastle number but around the middle of the song, it takes a totally different turn and becomes a more ýhipý number so ýSoul Swingý is more like two songs in one. Hardcastle said that he was bored during the recording of this song and decided to take a totally different turn and the result was a brilliant song. Well done Paul! The last song that I want to point out is the final track ýHave Yourself A Merry Little Christmasý. Donýt be turned off by the name of the song. While itýs basically a song that was meant for the holidays, I think that itýs a wonderful song that I can listen to all year long.

There are more songs that I want to point out but thereýs just not enough room to do so. This collection as a whole shows the many faces of the arc of music that Paul has composed over the past 20 years. This collection isnýt perfect but for what it was, this is one of the smartest collections ever put together. ýCover To Coverý is an essential purchase for both the old school and smooth jazz fan base.

Comprehensive, but frighteningly so.......2002-05-21

Paul Hardcastle has had a fascinating career, even if you don't like the music. In the 80s, he was selling record after record of heavy message-oriented dance tunes ranging on topics from the Vietnam War to ancient Egypt. After his work cooled on audiences, he switched gears and began doing what he was capable of doing: smooth jazz. The tinny-sounding drums and pop music stutter beats are still present, but he'd gone all soft and corny.

That said, this particular record shows you both sides of hardcastle, and it's pretty fascinating to watch the transition. Most people who are into Hardcastle are into him for his current smooth jazz direction, and will find the first disc refreshing in a "I didn't know he wrote that!" kind of way. However, people who enjoyed his earlier work and have heard better smooth jazz than he produces in TV commercials will likely find themselves with only half a disc to listen to.

A solid buy for fans of Hardcastle's "Jazzmasters" albums, but a loss for old school fans.

Hardcastle Well-Covered.......2000-10-12

This is it ! This is the Hardcastle collection to obtain.There is no filler, no garbage. One small gripe is the toned down-bass version of 19. Maybe Hardcastle wanted to blend this in well for his more mature contemporary pop-jazz listeners. Afterall, 19 was a dance-club hit back in 1985 (more samples than substance)for the time than it was a contemporary jazz tune.

All the pop classic originals are here, Rain Forest, King Tut (my favorite original album version;the original vinyl recording containing these two tracks has never been released on c.d format or as an import),and the Syndicate Theme. Hardcastle is also an amazing artist at taking classic pop and R&B tunes and adding his own interpretation or touch to them (It Seems to Hang On by Ashford and Simpson, Wishing on a Star by Rose Royce, and the classic Stevie Wonder tune Superstitiion).He pays great homage to these artists.His much later material is more contemporary jazz than Top 40 or club oriented.A few of the jazz tracks may make some feel a nod creeping up;Yet, the other tracks more than make-up for the semi-sleepers...In addition this release is more Hardcastles' personal and introspective choices than the marketing or record industry telling him what he can and can't release. Read the notes in the booklet contained with this package and you will be given personal insight from Mr. Hardcastle about the inspiration for many of the songs.

How I view Paul Hardcastle's "Cover to Cover" CD.......2000-06-15

Mr. Hardcastle's "Cover to Cover" CD is one of the best CDs that I have listened to in quite a long time. At the rate he is going, he will truly be the best smooth Jazz artist in no time flat! I have now in my collection all of his recordings and will continue to buy every one that he makes in the years to come. I am a fan for life. My favorite is "Rain Forest", but they are all "supurb". Keep 'em coming Paul.

Lightnin' Hopkins was one of the most distinctly voiced individuals to sing, play, and talk the Blues. Here, with these twelve songs he skillfully carries the burden of proof that he was (and still is, even in death) a Master of his craft. Soulful and sincere you can't help but be torn on whether or not to smile with joy or cry with sorrow. So the body improvises and forces you to lean closer to your stereo speakers to make sure you don't miss a single word or a single note. A classic and essential album for any Blues fan from a Master to whom so many are indebted.

Rediscovery-era Lightnin'.......2000-04-22

The first few years after Lightnin' Hopkins' 'rediscovery' in 1959 may have lacked the originality and youthful fervor of his early sides, but warmth and personality are splattered all over the place, including on this disc, one of two Tradition reissues. Like 'Country Blues', 'Autobiography in Blues' is very good, but not his best. I particularly enjoy 'Mama and Papa Hopkins'. One very minor annoyance is the inadvertent printing of the word 'time' after the title of every track on the back cover and in front of the actual minutes and seconds. For a moment the unwary might think that, by an incredible coincidence, every track ends with the word 'time'. Completists should note that 10 of these tracks appear on Collectables' 'Mama and Papa Hopkins' (Anthology of the Blues Part 3) and two tracks appear on the same label's 'Nothin' But the Blues' (Anthology of the Blues Part 4). In both comparisons the Tradition CD has better sound.

lightnin' hopkins classic. beauty of acoustic guitar and talking blues. in mama and papa hopkins, hopkins can sing only about his parents for five minutes. guitar work and singing are excellent. the story itself is touching, too. a must have blues classic together with john lee hooker's 'country blues of john lee hooker'. that is another touching talking blues.

Lightnin' Hopkins' touching and moody solo vocal and guitar. Masterpiece of country blues together with John Lee Hooker's "Country Blues of John Lee Hooker" and Lonnie Johnson's "Another Night to Cry". Those are all highly recommended.

Album Description

Released by Decca in 1954 to celebrate their 20th anniversary and to pay tribute to their most successful star, "Bing Crosby: A Musical Autobiography", a lavish 5-LP Box Set forms the backbone of AVID's latest 4-CD set in the Gold Re-masters series.

The Musical Autobiography contains 49 re-recordings and 40 originals all linked by Bing's charming commentary. The re-recordings were felt necessary at the time due to what was deemed the "dated" quality of the originals. The set is a fascinating trip through Bing's career up to the early 50's and covers all musical styles from country, ballads, jazz, Irish to religious songs, comedy, duets and of course Christmas favorites!

Our Box Set also includes music from two of Bing's many films, "Paris Honeymoon" and "The Star Maker", and broadcasts from Bing's popular radio show where he was regularly attracting 50 million listeners every week!

Finally on CD Four we have some interesting historical items including songs from all the soundtracks Bing recorded for famed director Mack Sennett in the 1930's including the infamous sound of the pipe organ used to back Bing when he was in dispute with the musicians union.

A VERY ENJOYABLE MUSICAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY.......2006-11-17

Back in 1954, Decca released a monumental 5-LP box set that mixed original recordings of Bing Crosby's biggest hits with newly recorded tracks on which Bing was backed by the excellent Buddy Cole Trio. What's more, Der Bingle himself also added spoken introductions to each song, offering a charmingly succinct account of his career up to the mid-1950s. As the title of the box set clearly states, it was indeed a musical autobiography, and a very interesting one at that. Fortunately, Avid Records have re-released this fantastic project on 4 CDs, complete with liner notes and some songs from Bing's early movie soundtracks and from the Mack Sennett-directed shorts in which he starred in the early thirties.

The songs recorded with the Buddy Cole Trio in 1954 are magnificent and prove once again (as if any sort of proof were needed) that Bing was a very fine jazz singer with a unique sense of rhythm. On these tracks (49 in all), Crosby takes a chronological journey through his early career, from songs he recorded with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra up to his hits from the thirties and forties. The trio's accompaniment is rather sparse, yet it works really well, and Bing's voice shines throughout.

Besides these fine recordings with Buddy Cole, the set also includes original Decca recordings, always preceded by Bing's spoken introductions as well, and featuring duet partners such as Al Jolson, Johnny Mercer, Louis Armstrong, the Andrews Sisters, Jack Teagarden, and Bob Hope, among many others. Finally, cuts from Crosby movies such as "Paris Honeymoon" or "The Big Broadcast," together with tracks recorded for the Mack Sennett shorts, round out the collection.

Since Bing did not record very extensively with small groups, this set would be worth the price just for the outstanding recordings with the Buddy Cole Trio. Yet, the charming, well enunciated spoken introductions make it a necessary addition to the collection of any serious Bing Crosby fan. If you really appreciate the unsurpassed talent of the king of the crooners, hopefully you will want to lay your hands on a copy of this fantastic set by the time you get done reading these lines. I am sure you will not be disappointed!
