"Ascendancy could very well be the valedictorian of the 2005 metal class."
Product Description
Ascendancy, the group's second album and their first on Roadrunner Records, is filled with carefully crafted songs that surge with energy, passion and originality. Like their solid 2003 debut Ember to Inferno, Ascendancy is rooted in '80s and '90s thrash, recalling the glory days of Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, and Testament. But the new disc doesn't stop there, incorporating aspects of melodic death metal and even prog-rock. Twin guitar harmonies and point/counterpoint dynamics abound, twisting around vocals that alternate from melodic and pained to caustic and full of rage. "We had so much more to work with this time," says guitarist and lead vocalist Matt Heafy of the Jason Suecof-produced disc. "I had great guitar sounds, Travis [Smith, drums] is playing like a machine, and the vocals are so much more multi-dimensional."While the first album, lyrically, addressed romantic disillusionment and child abuse, this time the songs confront spousal abuse, suicide, depression, tyranny and freedom of speech. However, even at his most poignant, Heafy prefers expressing gut emotion to preaching. "I've found that when you have a negative aspect in your life, you can find so much negativity in other people's lives around you, and in the world. For me, it's good to write about the negativity to get some of it out of my system."

Pretty good release, but didn't live up to the hype........2007-04-14
Second release from one of metal's better outfits.......2007-03-25
Trivium got the blessing, for what it's worth nowadays from Metallica, and in one magazine they (Trivium) paid their dues to Metallica's "Ride The Lightning", which is one of thrash's greatest moments, despite people's being pretty much sick of them by now.
I first bought "Ashes To Inferno" and thought it was a solid debut, and I consider "Ascendency" a sign that Trivium is indeed a metal band that is daring to stretch its constrictive creative boundaries. The sound is a cross of "Chaos AD" - era Sepultura and Pantera, with the guitars more crisp and intricate. The vocals? I'm a little up in the air about the jumping back and forth between gutteral croaking and more normal harmonies, although it does make the songs breathe somewhat easier.
What makes "Ascendancy" work without the track by track breakdown, is the guitar work - innovative and fresh in a style that doesn't welcome change with open arms. It's intelligent, has good socially conscious lyrics and has the passion to make it all work. I deduct one star until I make up my mind about those vocals.
Heavy Metal- TRIVIUM.......2007-03-20
Cowers in comparison to titans Metallica and Megadeth, but they do rock........2007-03-14
I'm not a kid, I just don't have my own Amazon account........2007-03-02
I find it funny that they've called themselves "The destroyers of false metal" when they infact are false metal, and quite crappy music.
Trivium are nothing short of Metallica rip-offs as everyone by now is quite obviously aware of. I also find it funny, that people who listen to lame metalcore like Trivium and Killswitch Engage make fun of emos while if you even look at a couple of the names of some of their songs, they scream what people are calling 'emo'. Dying in Your Arms.. Sound like what people call 'emo' much?
While I will admit their cover of Master of Puppets was decent (though not on this version.)
If you listen to any mainstream metalcore, one thing you must know is that a decent ammount of it is NOT metal (Like for an example: Norma Jean). As metalcore is part metal, and part hardcore. Usually the hardcore shadows the metal, making most not metal. Saddly, Trivium are close enough to be called metal, which IS a sad thing to say.
If you like this sorry excuse for a band, and most metalcore (although there ARE good metalcore bands out there, just most people who listen to it listen to crap like Trivum and Bullet for my Valentine), and if you listen to Nu-Metal (Which is a sub-genre of HARDROCK AND IS NOT METAL) you can not call yourself a 'metalhead'.
If you own this sorry excuse for a CD, you need to take it out of your collection, go to the nearest trashcan, and throw it in.

Great sophomore effort..........2007-01-16
Anyway, if you can grab the new release which contains the Metallica cover song, "Master of Puppets" as it's worth the price alone. It's very rare that a cover song sounds better than the original, but this one does. It also comes with a DVD containing all of the videos from Ascendancy along with taped footage of a concert.
Their new album, "Crusade" is also very good, so pick that one up as well.
I'm looking forward to where this band goes in the future. Trivium could be the next great American thrash band, now that Matt has abandoned the metal-core scream thing.
Basically, if you like old school Metallica, generally, Black album and before, then Trivium is a band for you.
Best Newcommer Album for Roadrunner.......2007-01-13
Good...Very Good...But..........2006-11-17
All the songs are awsome, Ascendancy, A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation....basically all the songs are awsome. I especially like the cover of Master of Puppets. Just awsome.
The DVD is good, but video version of "Like Light to Flies" was disappointing. It lacked the feeling and power that it had in the studio recording. I don't know why they did it differently, but in any case, it didn't turn out good. At least, thats my opinion. The live performances aren't that great either. The songs are awsome, no doubt, but the sound mixing in that building was horrible. You couldn't hear the "crack" of the snare very well, and the bass-drum wasn't very prodominate, like it should have been. The vocals could have been better amplified, as well. Not to mention they seem a little sloppy, not as tight as they should have/could have been. But I'm picky. GOOD BUY, nevertheless. IF YOU LIKE TRIVIUM, DEFINITLY GET THIS.
How can it get any better...?.......2006-06-14
This band gets a lot of crap from stupid ignorant people and it's very un necessary. People just don't respect bands today because of their genre even if they haven't heard the band before, which frankly is very stupid. But anyways, you should get this cd if you have a thing for good metal.
Awesome package, but falls short in some areas.......2006-05-29
Onto the DVD, the music videos for the most part were great. I wasn't a huge fan of the Rain video or the Dying in Your Arms video because they seemed pretty rushed and sloppily put together to me. The other videos were awesome, with great lighting and great shots put in, and some sort of a theme. The two mentioned above seemed they shot a video of the band playing the song live and matched up the audio when they could and then put in random shots between them. It also seemed like the cameras were cheap cam-corder things.
Now the live show. I don't even know where to begin with how disappointed I was with the live show. I honestly can not figure out why the band would have released this show on DVD for any of their fans to hear. Matt Heafy is an amazing vocalist and both guitarists are awesome.....on cd. Matt was having lots of trouble hitting the notes in some of the songs, and a few of the lead parts on guitar were played out of key by Corey. There are also lots of background vocals by Paulo, who obviously did not sing the parts on the cd because he sounds totally off. The songs are played pretty much in double time which is awesome becuase it would be really hard to play Triviums songs at the speed they were recorded at, but it also seems kind of sloppy. If the band wanted the songs to be that fast, they should have recorded them that fast.
In conclusion, if you want to buy a Trivium cd, get this version. The entire cd is amazing and it's worth getting the limited edition for the music videos and the bonus songs, however, if it bothers you when bands can't really pull off their own songs live, you may want to just never watch the concert section.

US Death Metal with a early 90's era Napalm Death vibe to it. The guitars are warp speed and very technical with a slightly progressive edge to them.
