After more than a year spent on the road behind their breakthrough self-titled debut--just how many times can Alex Kapranos sing "Take Me Out" without getting his skinny tie into a knot, anyway?--you might expect the members of Franz Ferdinand to feel a little frayed around the edges. But if You Could Have It So Much Better was supposed to be a bloated sophomore album focusing on bad airline meals and cold hotel swimming pools, somebody forgot to tell the Mercury Music Prize winning Scottish quartet. Instead, the Franzies return with a disc packed with thrilling punk-pop treatises like the single "Do You Want To," political rabble-rousers such as opener "The Fallen," and lovely psychedelic ballads that explore the common ground between the Beatles and Bowie, like "Eleanor Put You Boots On" (about Eleanor Freidberger of the Fiery Furnaces, no less). It's a stunning, confident piece of work that suggests the band is merely getting started. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as their first.......2007-06-27

Franz Ferdinand went downhill a bit with their sophomore album, but "Outsiders" is one of the best songs they've ever released so this album is still worthy of purchase.

5 out of 5 stars virtuous among us, walk among us............2006-09-23

I have to admit, I REALLY like this album. I don't own the first album yet, but I can't imagine how it can be much better than this. It took me three tries to get fully embroiled in this album. Once that happened I have been playing it non-stop. There is definitely a punk base to all their songs, but there's something about the pace of their music (ever changing, pulsatile and jagged, then smooth...) that keeps you imbalanced yet wanting more. I can't wait to try the first album.

5 out of 5 stars So much better!.......2006-08-05

Although I'll admit I like the eponymous album a little better, I find this album a breath of fresh air to my somewhat-jaded soul. I've seen FF on SNL and Austin City Limits; the lyrics blend very well with the music, and there's enough of the unexpected to keep me entertained. I look forward to hearing a lot more from these guys!

5 out of 5 stars So much better.......2006-07-16

This album is amazing. The first 7 tracks are all good, and then there is a mix amongst the last half. To think of the career of Franz Ferdinand reminds me now of the path the Cure took with Boys Don't Cry. There is a great amount of structure to each song, and nothing beats the 3-4 hits such as This Boy and Walk Away.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary.......2006-06-08

An extraordinary second album, it's even better than the homonymous.
Songs filled of intelligent lyrics about a group of people living in an industrial and decadent city. The stories are from Glasgow but, like all local stories, the identification is global.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Almost like they're playing live!.......2006-03-29

I'm a big Franz Ferdinand fan and finally got to see them in concert, just before this album was released. I have to say, that this album absolutely captures the energy and excitement their concerts provide. The music is wonderful. Their songs range from exciting and fun like "Do You Want To?," mellow and melodic like "Eleanor Put Your Boots Back On" and dark and sexy like "Evil and a Heathen." I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoyed their last album and anyone who just wants music they can dance to.

As for the Dual Disc issue, I enjoyed it, simply because I can watch the video for "Do You Want To?" over and over again. For me, that alone was worth paying for it. If you want something more than that, just buy the regular version.

4 out of 5 stars DualDisc does not have surround sound.......2006-02-08

The four stars I'm giving is for the music on the disc. But here's my warning about the DualDisc format of this album: even though the track listing here on Amazon.com suggests that the DVD side has the album in 5.1 surround sound, that is *not* true. If you read the label on the album, it says "enhanced stereo".
Getting a surround sound mix is the only reason I would ever buy a DualDisc and this one doesn't have it. The extra video content on the DVD side is not really worth the extra cost. Get the CD version of this album.

4 out of 5 stars 4-1/2 stars -- Lucky lucky.......2006-01-20

First off, I promised myself that I wouldn't comment on this kind of thing any more, but since someone else mentioned it, I'll add MY two cents. I agree with reviewer James that people shouldn't give a great album like this one star because of the DualDisc technology. We're supposed to be reviewing the actual music on the album, remember? (And just for the record, I've had absolutely no trouble playing ANY DualDiscs on anything I own: computers, walkmans, DVD players, etc. I don't know; maybe I'm just lucky.)

Anyway, I checked out Franz Ferdinand's self-titled debut album on a whim and found myself enjoying it greatly. Although it's still true that the music isn't for everyone, the guys continue with their great sound on their second album. There are several funky tracks to find as usual, like "Evil And a Heathen" and "The Fallen". Another good one is "Well That Was Easy", which sounds a little like Men Without Hats' "Pop Goes the World".

But the best tracks on here would have to be the final track, "Outsiders", and the irresistible first single, "Do You Want To". What really surprised me, though, is that they can even score with mellow tracks. "Eleanor Put Your Boots On" and "Fade Together" are wonderful escapes from their regular fare.

Like on their first album, there's also one song on HERE that I can do without, which is "This Boy", because I don't think the lyrics make any sense. Now, some people may say, "When do ANY of their lyrics make sense?" which is a fair argument, but I think the lyrics in that song just don't work very well. Other than that, there's really no way you COULD have it so much better.

1 out of 5 stars The CD OK but do not buy the dual disc.......2006-01-19

Being a Franz Ferdinand enthusiast I agree with the previous reviews as to the musical content of this recording. However Amazon does not alert that the DVD side of the dual disc is Zone 1 and cannot be reproduced in other zones. I bought the Dual Disc of the Ferdinanz recording as I wanted to listen to the enhanced high resolution multichannel version, but I just couldn't because of the compatibility problem mentioned. Besides, although the Dual Disc can be played in my CD player it makes a nasty noise. Not a format I would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars As great as the first album!.......2006-01-08

Franz Ferdinand's album is similar to the first - and that's not a bad thing: same catchy hooks, foot-tapping beats, and singable choruses. (If you don't tap your foot or sing along, there's something wrong with you). Anyway, they do tweak their sound some (listen to "Eleanor Put Your Boots on", a song that definitely has a Beatles influence). The DVD side is great - behind the scenes footage, an interview, photo gallery, and the music video for the first single, "Do You Want to".

As for the negative reviews from people who bought the DualDisc format but hated it - hey, nobody forced you to buy it.

If you're considering buying a DualDisc, read the small print first. I have no problems playing it on my personal CD player and my stereo, and it works well in my DVD player also.
This is one of three DualDiscs I own and I will buy more in the future. The only downside is that you have to keep the disc in the jewel case when you're not playing it, but it's a minor inconvenience.

If you're a big fan of the band, check out their self-titled 2 disc live DVD!

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27

Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.

She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.

Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.

This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.
