After more than a year spent on the road behind their breakthrough self-titled debut--just how many times can Alex Kapranos sing "Take Me Out" without getting his skinny tie into a knot, anyway?--you might expect the members of Franz Ferdinand to feel a little frayed around the edges. But if You Could Have It So Much Better was supposed to be a bloated sophomore album focusing on bad airline meals and cold hotel swimming pools, somebody forgot to tell the Mercury Music Prize winning Scottish quartet. Instead, the Franzies return with a disc packed with thrilling punk-pop treatises like the single "Do You Want To," political rabble-rousers such as opener "The Fallen," and lovely psychedelic ballads that explore the common ground between the Beatles and Bowie, like "Eleanor Put You Boots On" (about Eleanor Freidberger of the Fiery Furnaces, no less). It's a stunning, confident piece of work that suggests the band is merely getting started. --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:

Almost like they're playing live!.......2006-03-29
As for the Dual Disc issue, I enjoyed it, simply because I can watch the video for "Do You Want To?" over and over again. For me, that alone was worth paying for it. If you want something more than that, just buy the regular version.
DualDisc does not have surround sound.......2006-02-08
Getting a surround sound mix is the only reason I would ever buy a DualDisc and this one doesn't have it. The extra video content on the DVD side is not really worth the extra cost. Get the CD version of this album.
4-1/2 stars -- Lucky lucky.......2006-01-20
Anyway, I checked out Franz Ferdinand's self-titled debut album on a whim and found myself enjoying it greatly. Although it's still true that the music isn't for everyone, the guys continue with their great sound on their second album. There are several funky tracks to find as usual, like "Evil And a Heathen" and "The Fallen". Another good one is "Well That Was Easy", which sounds a little like Men Without Hats' "Pop Goes the World".
But the best tracks on here would have to be the final track, "Outsiders", and the irresistible first single, "Do You Want To". What really surprised me, though, is that they can even score with mellow tracks. "Eleanor Put Your Boots On" and "Fade Together" are wonderful escapes from their regular fare.
Like on their first album, there's also one song on HERE that I can do without, which is "This Boy", because I don't think the lyrics make any sense. Now, some people may say, "When do ANY of their lyrics make sense?" which is a fair argument, but I think the lyrics in that song just don't work very well. Other than that, there's really no way you COULD have it so much better.

The CD OK but do not buy the dual disc.......2006-01-19
As great as the first album!.......2006-01-08
As for the negative reviews from people who bought the DualDisc format but hated it - hey, nobody forced you to buy it.
If you're considering buying a DualDisc, read the small print first. I have no problems playing it on my personal CD player and my stereo, and it works well in my DVD player also.
This is one of three DualDiscs I own and I will buy more in the future. The only downside is that you have to keep the disc in the jewel case when you're not playing it, but it's a minor inconvenience.
If you're a big fan of the band, check out their self-titled 2 disc live DVD!

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27
She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.
Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.
This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.
