A couple years ago, San Diego singer-songwriter Tristin Prettyman was a competitive surfer. These days, she seems to prefer staying out of the water but still under the stars. Her debut album seems custom made for sunset-hour clambakes and bonfires on the beach, a swell of acoustic guitars, quiet melodies and lapping waves that serenely come together on unadorned folk-pop songs like "The Story" and "Song For The Rich." G. Love plays harmonica on a pair of tracks, while beau Jason Mraz provides vocals for the sweet and tender "Shy That Way." But it's Prettyman's hazily magnificent voice--limited in range but dreamy in scope--that really keeps this album afloat. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars Female Jack Johnson.......2007-05-21

With all due respect to Tristan, her style is very similar to Jack Johnson's style, which makes it very interesting, since she's the first female artist to develop Johnson's "surf rock" style.
She has made a very consistent album, full of laid-back tunes.
I'll be waiting for her second album.

5 out of 5 stars Great album!.......2007-02-14

Yes, it's copy-protected, but I had no trouble getting into my iTunes library and onto my iPod. The album itself is amazing. Very laid-back music that makes me just want to listen. Youthful and energetic, but in a way that seems to exude comfort. A great album!

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY.......2007-02-07

Sorry Tristan..Her music is great, but do not buy this CD if you use iTunes / an iPod on a windows computer. EMI has decided that it will only allow Tristan's music to be used on Windows Media Player. You cannot add the music from the CD to iTunes! Such a strange move given the dominance of the iPod and iTunes. If you see an EMI executive, tell him/her that this move was moronic and only impacted the HONEST PEOPLE THAT BUY THE CD.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant debut album from singer-songwriter .......2007-02-04

This album was released about 18 months ago (August 05) and I must admit I was totally unfamiliar with Tristan Prettyman. Then by chance I recently heard one of her songs playing at my local book store, I asked who was playing, and I got the album. Better late than never!

"Twentythree" (11 tracks, 17 min.) is very reminiscent of artists like Jewel, Ani DiFranco, Miranda Lee Richardson and even Sheryl Crow. A lot of acoustic guitars, with a (mostly gently) backing band. The best songs on here are the opener (and first single) "Love, Love, Love", second single "Always Feel That Way", and "Shy That Way", which features Jason Mraz on co-vocals (this is also the third single, and the track I happen to catch at the bookstore). There really are no weak tracks on here. "Song For the Rich" and the closer "Simple As It Should Be" are beautiful ballads featuring only vocals and guitar. If you like this type of music, you canot go wrong with this album.

I am now going to check if Tristan Prettyman is still touring in support of this album. I'd love to find out how these songs translate in a live setting. Or perhaps Prettyman is already moving on and in the process of making her second album. Either way, I will keep an eye on what she'll be doing next. "Twentythree" is highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Good artist, but DRM sucks...find her music live!.......2007-02-01

I had heard "Shy That Way" and "Beautiful" on the radio and was impressed, so I ran out to buy Tristan's studio album, not realizing that it was copy protected. Big bummer, as most of my music I listen to on my iPod or on my car CD player that doesn't play most of the fancy formatted type discs. So this is a partial downer on the cd itself, since I don't know how much I'll be able to listen to it.

However, Tristan the artist is great and I love her music. Don't dismiss her just because of the crappy record labels and their desire to control how consumers listen to music -- trust me, it's NOT her call! She allows taping and trading of her live concerts, so she WANTS to get her music out there! Buy copies of her older, non-protected singles and EPs so she can make a living, but just search for Tristan Prettyman's live archive and enjoy this fantastic artist to your heart's content.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, fresh voice for today.......2006-11-05

It's hard for me to find music that my 4 year old will tolerate (unless it's the Wiggles) and this cd has passed the toddler test!

What a fantastic collection of songs! The music is creative, Tristan's voice is magical, and the CD has not left my player. I bought one for my best friend, too. If you love Natalie Merchant and singers along those lines, you will not be disappointed with Tristan's music.

4 out of 5 stars Calming and relaxing.......2006-05-20

In a wrap: A very nice CD.

If you like such artists as Jack Johnson, Xavier Rudd, etc. then this album may really please you.

Love love love, Shy That Way are excellent just sitting back in the sun or driving along songs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-02-22

Note to Amazon: You're marketing strategy works. This was one of those "customers who brought items in your cart also bought......" things. So I checked it out because I'm always in the mood for new music.

I am very impressed with this record. Excellent vocals and songwriting by a girl with a guitar. No over production needed here.

4 out of 5 stars Smooth...........2006-02-17

Saw her in concert a year ago and wanted an album immediately. Tristan Prettyman has a smooth voice and a grip on the topics she wants to sings about. She deftly handles the guitar to support and not overide her great singing ability. I can't wait for the next album.

Throughout each shimmering track on Vrumjaago's Twentythree, a smoothly textured sonic recipe is cooked up and served for aural sustenance to be savored by discerning listeners. The soundscapes found here progress across multiple valleys and terrain so much that many listens are required to grasp the entire scope of the music. Whether sampling the CD's refined and hypnotic electronica during the day or listening as background bliss to fill nightly dream states, the tunes promise to sink inside and linger without intrusion. Since the album includes minimal house and ambient grooves, this resonant recipe can be played as a backdrop for anyone or anything that requires astute electronic accompaniment. The seamlessly flowing tracks and sequences play through with just as much fluency and capability as anything released by such noteworthy artists in the same genre, including Space Time Continuum and Mouse on Mars. And like these ambient pioneers of intelligent dance music, Vrumjaago thrives on creating works that conjure up strange mental imagery seemingly informed by a futuristic wisdom. --Lucas Hilbert

    Album Description

a crisp collection of electronica at it's finest. it's silmultaneously both achingly beautiful, and wholly rhythmic. the razor sharp snares and deep thudding kicks pound you into submission, while the hooky melodies riccochet around your head for hours afterword. if you're a fan of intelligent electronica in the vein of: orbital, autechere, aphex twin and mu-ziq, then vrumjaago is definitely one *not* to miss.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fits right in with the latest Warp releases........2000-02-10

Along the same vein as Mouse on Mars, mu-ziq, and Orbital, Vrumjaago was a very pleasant surprise. The melodies are very well thought out, but not too poppy. The beats are brilliantly arranged, though simpler than mu-ziq they still hold a similar quality. Some of the material successfully echoes Warp's Artificial Intelligence series, which is a lot to say for an American white kid.

Highly reccommended to people tired of the same old Fatboy.

5 out of 5 stars In short, excellent, wonderful.......1999-09-25

I've listened to the whole disc one time through. Initial impressions: Very well done. Great use of tonal ranges and variations, nice blending of tempos across songs. Often, it seems that electronic music of this type seems to settle into mono-tonality, within limited set of tempo, generally fairly downbeat. Lends very well toward visualization for me. I seem to see music as much as hear it, that is, notes, tones, etc. tend to occur visually to me in various forms, depending on the mood of the music and my frame of mind. I don't know if I am unique in this way or not, but, the disc was very visually evocative to me, almost like slipping into a trance (hmm...trance music? Never heard of that, have we?) and allowing the music to carry the visual imagery. Very good "reflecting" music for me, provoking thought via imagery via sound.

    5 out of 5 stars In a word... outstanding........1999-08-06

Gustav from FM 94.7 knrk says "In a word... outstanding. I'm still the most impressed with track 1 on the CD, Plus, it's time to seriously congratulate whoever mixed that thing in post production. Sounds brilliant in my car (especially the lower 808 thuds) and has excellent stereo separation. Again, totally excellent.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars If you're sick of all the pop-princesses that have been shoved down your throat..........2005-10-14

    The Good
"Love Love Love" has a soulful acoustic bounce to it. "The Story" starts of with a serine guitar & vocal section that gives way to upbeat rhythms. Prettyman's vocals are soothing and enthusiastic. Tristan pairs up with Jason Mraz on "Shy That Way". The contrasts of their vocal tones compliment each other. You can really hear the musical chemistry between them. "Please" has sort of a country twang to it with its slide guitar licks and lively vocals. "Song for the Rich" is ballad of woe set to just one well-played guitar arrangement. On "Simple as it Should Be", Tristan explains how great her life is with someone special in her life, whether they are together or apart.

    The Bad
    Nothing notable

    The Verdict
If you're sick of all the pop-princesses that have been shoved down your throat over the years, and you want a woman who can play the guitar and write her own intelligent and meaningful lyrics, then Tristan is your gal.
