Biting, sometimes base satire and humor populates this 21-cut comedy-rock debut from actor-musician Jack Black and his band, Tenacious D. Sort of like a trashier, more casual and less musical Beck, vocalist-guitarist Black and guitarist-vocalist Kyle Gass, with help from Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, Redd Kross's Steve McDonald, and Page McConnell of Phish, deliver oddball musings that will appeal mostly to fans of the talented Black, whose earned a following thanks to memorable, frenetic turns in the films Hi Fidelity and Jesus' Son. The songs and "bits" include the wonderfully, intentionally melodramatic "Wonderboy," Black ordering "four Chicken McNuggets" on "Drive Thru," and the funny ode to vocalist Ronnie James Dio, where Black observes, "Dio has rocked for a very long time / Now it's time for him to pass the torch." With often intentionally droll and dumb humor smartly executed like a latter-day version of Bob & Doug McKenzie with a dash of Spinal Tap, this more-comedy-than-rock debut is likely to achieve cult status. --Katherine Turman

4 out of 5 stars Tenacious D.......2007-05-12

If you're a fan of the movie or of the band itself, complete your collection with this CD...has quite a bit of songs on it and the songs are catchy...but do not buy this for younger people...has alot of foul language.

4 out of 5 stars Catchy Little Tunes!!.......2007-05-01

Say what you will about The D, but when it comes to writing short 1 minute songs about one's own awesomery they cannot be beat. Songs like Tribute and Kyle Quit The Band are hardly 2 minutes but will have you humming them the rest of the day. The catchy melodies and hilarious lyrics make this just one sweet mix of folk, comedy, and rock. Although, there is alot of swearing Jack Black is one of those rare people who can swear all day but never offend. He has a fun, jovial tone that makes his F-bombs seem enjoyable rather than tawdry. Check this out if you have any curousity in the mystery that is Tecacious D.

3 out of 5 stars I wanted to love it.......2007-03-02

Jack black has such amazing vocal talent. After stumbling across "Tribute" on the internet one day I went in search of more of Tenacious D's music. I was so sad with what I found. All of it sounded wonderful, but so crude that I could barely stand to listen to it. I am by no means uptight about crude humor but this was too over the top for me. I am glad that their are so many people that do like it though. They are an amazingly talented band and deserve to be encuraged. I just hope that one day in the future they release some thing a little more toned down.

5 out of 5 stars Very funny, just great stuff.......2007-02-28

This was Tenacious D's first full album, and they really got it right. This has rock, good comedy skits, and overall a blend of potty humor and sheer genious to make you laugh your socks off. Highlights of this album are kielbasa, tribute, the road, and F*** Her Gently. All of the other stuff is really good also, and I can listen to this album several times in a row and still laugh. Check this out, if you like jack black, and even if you don't, this will make you laugh. Buy this now.

5 out of 5 stars Your socks will be rocked off.......2007-01-30

There isn't much point to writing a long-winded, analytical review of Tenacious D's debut album. This would almost certainly involve a good deal of overthinking. What everyone should know is that even though the D are something of a joke band, their claim as "the greatest band on Earth" is not very far from the mark. Let's face it: aside from the 70's classic rock veterans who still release albums and show up in concert from time to time, music these days basically stinks. Tenacious D are a breath of fresh air and a legitimately great band. Their songwriting is top notch and very musically creative, while still remaining extremely funny. Jack Black has a great voice, and Kyle Gass is really a very skilled guitarist. Sure the lyrics are incredibly obscene, but so what? Tenacious D are the bawllz. Enough said.

Like Spinal Tap, the Rutles, and even the Bonzo Dog Band, Tenacious D manage to send up rock conventions while employing them expertly. The soundtrack to their first full-length motion picture mixes songs and bits from the movie, but it plays like a hilarious concept album more than anything. Dave Grohl and (one half of the) Dust Brothers--who played on the D's delicious 2001 debut--are here joined by Meat Loaf and Ronnie James Dio. The title song navigates power balladry from the late '80s and early '90s in ways most awesome, while also throwing in a bridge that rips on faux-mystical elf-progisms of '70s stadium rock. At times the songs get a bit too meta (e.g. "He who is groovy must be in my movie"), but quibbling about self-referentiality when it comes to a fake band that calls itself "The Greatest Band on Earth" and who sings that their movie is "better than-uh Citizen Kane-uh" is perhaps to not have much of a sense of humor. --Mike McGonigal

4 out of 5 stars Better than the movie - give it a chance and you'll love it!.......2007-07-23

It has been several years that Tenacious D fans have been waiting for a new album from The D, and as a fan, this album satisfied my hunger for new content but failed to deliver as a worthy successor to their self-titled debut CD. The main reason for this is that the album plays much more like a soundtrack (which it is advertised as) rather than a full-blown album. That being said, this has to be one of my favorite movie soundtracks of all time and still captures the unique sound (and humor) that I love about Jack and Kyle.

From the moment the first track "Kickapoo" begins and you hear the signature D-like acoustic riff, you know your in for a treat as Jack playfully weaves a story about a young JB, rebelling against his father by embracing Rock in a way that only he can ("Twas I who f---ed the dragon!"). Keep in mind that I first heard this CD before even watching the movie, and the first minute of acoustic guitar combined with Jack Black's aggressive, completely ridiculous lyrics brought such a huge smile to my face that instantly felt the wait for this song alone was worth it. Vintage Tenacious D. Meatloaf and Dio also contribute to make the opening so strong that it really is difficult for the rest of the album to maintain the momentum this track brings from beginning to end.

"Classico" is the first of several tracks on the album that pays homage to tunes from the band's past work (same Bach piece Kyle played in "Rock Your Socks Off" from the first album) while adding a new spin to it. Many reviewers have complained that some of the songs on this CD are too short to enjoy but this is a great example of one that is just long enough to appreciate - once again, brilliant combination of KG's masterful guitar-playing and JB's over-the-top lyrics ("When you rule, you f---in school, all of the fools, out of their jewels).

Unlike, "Classico", "Baby" is one song I really wish was longer than it turns out to be on the album. It's a soulful tune that provides just enough harmony and guitar that it might have earned some playtime on the radio if it were fleshed out into a full song, especially when you consider there are no swear words involved. It's of my favorite songs to sing along to, even if it only lasts barely over a minute.

Although "Destiny" only serves as a transition track with a couple lines from the movie, what's nice about the small snippet is that Jack sings the same short vocal riff that preceded each of the HBO specials, the same one that would play as they entered the open-mike night bar - another treat for hardcore D fans. This is nicely followed by "History", another song that longtime D fans would undoubtedly recognize from the HBO specials and other appearances. This version is slightly extended, with added lines like, "We've run with wolves, we've climbed K2, even stopped a moving train", and it's nice to finally have a real version to play.

"The Government Totally Sucks" has drawn some comparisons to "City Hall" from the first album, but I find it to be lacking in their trademark tongue-in-cheek humor, as the music seems a little lazy and repetitive and the lyrics are definitely short on inspiration. It's no wonder this track was cut from the movie.

"Master Exploder" is, just like "Classico", just enough Tenacious D brilliance and ridiculousness to warrant repeated playbacks even though it is a short piece. With lines like "I did not mean to blow your mind, but that sh--happens to me all the time!", this track is a perfect example of why Tenacious D fans can't get enough of them - if you understand the sarcasm behind their seemingly over-the-top arrogance, you can't help but enjoy them for what they pretend (believe?) to be: the greatest band on earth.

"Papegenu" may seem a little strange if you haven't seen the movie, but once you see the scene you'll understand the meaning behind the weird use of a recorder and lots of dialogue between JB and Sasquatch (hint: mushrooms are involved). Again, longtime D fans should notice the second half of the song is similar to the one played with Sasquatch in another of the HBO specials.

More songs follow along with the movie, with "Dude I Totally Miss You" describing the duos time apart. Like "Baby", it's another soulful song but adds a bit of man-crush humor that is a traditional theme in D songs. "Break-In City" and "Car Chase City" are less Tenacious D, more generic rock and roll. Although Jack still works his unique styling into the songs, the music doesn't seem typical of something him and KG would perform in a club.

This all leads into a climactic battle with the Devil in "Beelzeboss", and MAN what a climax it is! JB and Kyle challenge the Devil to a rock-off, and the back-and-forth music and lyrics between the foes turns out to be an awesome rock opera that takes laugh-out-loud humor, hard metal, slow acoustic, and head-banging solos to create by far the best track on the album. Played with a passionate snarl by Dave Grohl (always a contributor to D songs but never quite like this!), the Devil proves to be a worthy adversary to Jack and Kyle, vocally and stylistically. This song provides an idea of what really happened in "Tribute" from their first album. I cannot get enough of this song and would recommend the album for this track alone.

The album finishes off with "POD", which is a fun recap of the movie that doesn't sound very Tenacious D-like but is still enjoyable, and "The Metal", which is a bit harder than the Bluesy sound we're used to hearing but, again, is very enjoyable.

I pre-ordered this album and it came out before the film actually was released, and the best compliment I can give the CD is that the movie did not live up to the soundtrack. I fell in love with a lot of the songs on the album, but I was disappointed that the scenes in the movie that were accompanied by some of the tracks in this album (mainly "Kickapoo" and Beelzeboss") did not live up to the excitement I felt just listening without a visual to go with the lyrics. Don't let the below average movie keep you from purchasing this CD, as I promise you that if you give it a chance, Tenacious D's music will invade your mind just like it did mine so many years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Only good if you have seen the movie.......2007-06-30

I am a big fan of Tenacious D's music, and I didn't like this album upon first listen. I was skeptical about the massive amount of profanity throughout the album, and overall did not think it was that funny. After watching the film, however, I think that this album is hilarious. Tenacious D is comical in all aspects of their art, and this soundtrack only further proves this. Great album.

5 out of 5 stars The Warp & Woof of Heavy Metal! .......2007-04-11

I'm an unapologetic Metal Head (Have nearly every Iron Maiden CD! Love Dio, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Malmsteen, Helloween, etc.), and have to say that Tenacious D captures the heart of Heavy Metal in short, succinct masterpieces. I know the CD is a "soundtrack" but the music could definitely be incorporated into a Rock Opera on the order of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The movie wasn't great, but the music more than makes up for it, no matter how short some of the songs are.

Especially cool:
Kickapoo -- Killer song. The riffs are driving, even the acoustical ones!
Classico -- Sweet little 1 minute song comprised of Bach and Mozart tunes. It's good to see honors paid to the only form of music that's better and rocks the hardest: Baroque/Classical.
Beelzeboss -- Worth the price of the album, IMHO. It has all the components for a mini-opera.

I grant that there's a LOT of edgy and offensive language, but if you can handle the F bombs then the experience will pay off in spades.

Musically satisfying. Get it!

3 out of 5 stars Half good half crap.......2007-04-04

It's much better than their horrible debut cd and the movie was great. The soundtrack however is half good half pointless. Songs like Break The Gate or the Government Sucks, these aren't funny or good songs at all. Luckily there's classics like Kickapoo and of course Beelzaboss. It's worth getting if you can get it at a good price.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2007-04-03

This is a masterpiece. Some songs play super hard and rival metallica, plus Ronnie James DIO is in the first song.

Heavy metal with electric guitars? Too obvious. The D doesn't do obvious. And neither does this tribute. The acoustic magic of Jack and Kyle is bolstered with the most epic weapons in bluegrass: banjo, mandolin, and fiddle. The Dust Bowl Cavaliers are perfectly matched like Tango and Cash for these mythological interpretations of Tenacious D's greatest songs. Remember: this is just a tribute to a tribute.

5 out of 5 stars This isn't JUST a tribute.......2007-03-24

This CD is one of my favorite CDs I own. If you like Tenacious D or if you like tribute CDs you will really like this CD. I don't know if you can call yourself a Tenacious D fan until you have at least heard this CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is just a tribute...to a great cd!.......2006-12-05

The Dust Bowl Cavaliers took the music of Tenacious D and created their own unique and original twist on a funny and talented band. For those of you who are afraid of something a little different, dont take a dive in the creative pool. But for all of you out there who are looking for some great talent and a new twist on the "greatest songs in the world", buy this cd!!!! This band has the voice and the sound to pull it off, and they did a fantastic job of tributing to the music of Tenacious D.

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2006-12-02

I've seen some of the guys in the Dust Bowl Cavaliers (specifically Mark McConville and Cory Rouse) perform with a local improv troupe, out here in Los Angeles. They are extremely funny on stage, so I can only assume that their work with Tenacious D's songs are great as well. I'm an avid Tenacious D, and I plan on giving this CD a go. The clips seem right on the money. F--- Her Gently is hilarious!!!

This set has a cd with very funny songs on it, a mini poster which is great, 9 tarrot cards and the pick of destiny itself. I strongly recommended this for anyone who is a fan. I sure love it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great is the D.......2007-04-13

The cd is great the box is kinda cool but doesn't really offer much i really just bought it because it had the pick of destiny inside. Plus the tarot cards from the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent! despite gratuitous F bomb use.......2007-02-20

I loved it! Once you get past the overused F word its AWESOME! Mr. Black is hilarious AND talented with his use and abuse of music. Once you get past the language thing...the music really rocks AND makes you laugh at the same time...I'm still not sure how bigfoot fits in...but the line: "Your gonna gargle man-aze...ewugh!" still cracks me up!

5 out of 5 stars There to rock!.......2007-01-21

Those guys are so awesome.
The Soundtrack was for some reason here in Germany only for a few days available and will be ready to buy again as the movie starts here in Feb. 2007. So I've buyed it here in the US.
A (short) good album where rock is celebrated by two men which know ho to rock!
For any rock-fan the perfect album!!

3 out of 5 stars Same sound - different genre........2007-01-12

Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Tenacious D. Loved the movie. Love the whole concept of the best band in the world, but we heard it already. The sound is incredable, they are absolutly histerical, but the music is in the same old place. Let's see a new angle next time.

The songs and "bits" include the wonderfully, intentionally melodramatic "Wonderboy," Black ordering "four Chicken McNuggets" on "Drive Thru," and the funny ode to vocalist Ronnie James Dio, where Black observes, "Dio has rocked for a very long time / Now it's time for him to pass the torch." The music is creative and catchy and the lyrics will make you die from laughter. Being a musician myself, I would have to say that this is quality music and is a must have for all those who don't already own it....JB and KG, Tenacious D, This CD is Key!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Actual Genuine Music!.......2002-01-03

Jack and Kyle are obviously having a ball. Though clearly self-indulgent, they take this self-indulgence to the level of art form. Adolescent only in that it is pot and sex driven, this music has a heart and a genuineness that is most certainly art. While the music and content do become repetitive, one stays truly charmed throughout the album, willingly hanging on for dear life until the next gem presents itself. Everyone I talk to who knows this album becomes really happy at its mention. My only serious complaint would be the poor production value. This music is meant to be played LOUD, but it is impossible to reach the level of satisfaction without the music becoming muddled and unlistenable. At times the volume levels of the sketches drop off the map. I hope the boys get enough juice off this to get a better producer for next time.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and rocking........2002-01-02

This band is hilarious! Yes, I have heard their songs from the acoustic shows, so shut up. Kyle Gass is a guitar god, and Jack Black has incredible range. I love the song Tribute. It's so Zeppelin. Also, The Road and Karate are classics. I don't understand Lee and Explosivo. What's with that? I wish they could tell the stories about the songs first, and have the album a bit longer. Oh well. Bye!

5 out of 5 stars Spinal Tap comparisons may abound..........2002-01-01

...but Tenacious D really is pretty special, and might even deserve that comparison. What might seem on the surface to be a simple lowbrow hard-rock parody, displays a canny knowledge of the cliched catchwords of "rawk" writers (in "Tribute") and tastefully understated music that will insinuate itself into your ears and then eat your brain. Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Love the D.......2007-02-21

I only give this CD 1 star because its supposed to be clean. There is gratuitous use of the F word on Kikapoo, the very first song.

5 out of 5 stars The D - Clean (actually more entertaining this way).......2006-11-22

If you love the D, and you have kids, and you still want to listen to the d without all the potty talk, get this version. Your kids can rock out with you.
He is going to mow your freakin' grass, and you know his name is Kyle Gass.

Enough said. Go buy it now. And then rock.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome song.......2003-11-06

a great song by the D. it really imposes the J.R.R. Tolken feel throughout the song. if you enjoy this song i HIGHLY recament buying their self titaled album.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-08-21

I love this group and this is one great song! I loved everything the guitar improv was hot! Good! Good! And more good. This group definitely has talent. I recommend the entire cd.

    4 out of 5 stars Its.. okay........2002-12-19

Tenacious D is a great band, but this is by no means one of their better songs. I have no idea why they made it a single, and there is no need to buy it, even if it does have "Tribute" on it.

Get their self titled album. Its much better, and worth the extra $5-$10. This is decent, but definatly not neccessary.

A killer single for the greatest song. A "cave intro" to a
folksy 'Jesus Ranch.' A rough 'Kyle quit the band' and to top
it off... an EXPLOSIVO REMIX. Some D you can have E with.

    and the beast was done.
