5 out of 5 stars Excellent Follow-up and Departure.......2007-04-25

Coconut Telegraph has a much more personal feel than other albums of his during this time period. He sings about his daughter growing up, John Wayne's passing and many trials he and people close him had to contend with. It is a more mature album and is more introspective and contemplative. And this is an excellent side of Jimmy. There are more ballads and the lyrics seem more personal to him. However, he never loses site of the 'Buffett' personality so even in the most contemplative moment, he can interject humor and good time. This is an excellent album and one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars coconut telegraph review.......2007-02-09

Coconut Telegraph is one of Jimmy's best! All 9 songs are great. I would reconmend this cd to all Jimmy Buffett fans!

I purchased this CD to upodate my BUFFETT collection! I've played the ORIGINAL cassette tape so much it was beyond use.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-11-09

Around the time of "Coconut Telegraph" Buffett was beginning to leave his hard partying days behind him and becoming a more "mature" artist. Album sales really began to fall off by this time, but "Coconut" remains one of the gems in Buffett's repertoire as the material is strong throughout the disc. Every song on this album is a good one, and a few have become Buffett classics. All of the songs except for two are Buffett originals. "It's My Job" is a great song about people doing various things for a living written by fellow Coral Reefer band member Mac McAnally. "Stars Fell On Alabama" is another cover that fits Buffett's style perfectly. Of the Buffett originals the title track is a great one. "Incommunicado" deals with the death of John Wayne. "Growing Older But Not Up" is classic Buffett with one of his famous lines "I'd rather die while I'm living than live while I'm dead. "The Good Fight (Co-written with J.D. Souther) is another strong track. "The Weather Is Here I Wish You Were Beautiful" is a classic Buffett play on words and a fan favorite to this day. The album closes out with the mellow "Island" and a song about his daughter "Little Miss Magic". "Coconut Telegraph" is not an album that you often see mentioned along side some of earlier bigger sellers, but this album really is one of his best.

5 out of 5 stars More songs about the islands and drinking - perfect Buffet.......2006-10-07

This is music that is perfect for a friday afternoon in rush hour traffic. Forget all about the office, the overdue work, and anything else that's stressing you out. Buffet is magic and this is one of his best.

    Album Description

Stew's unique and compelling view of the world as seen through the strange prism of Los Angeles create soundscapes from the heavy groove and sexual intrigue of tracks like 'She's Really Daddy Feelgood' and 'Into Me' to moving, almost elegaic anthems inspired by urban landscapes like 'Cavity' and 'C'mon Everybody' to beautifully skewed songs like 'Ordinary Love' and 'Sister/Mother', this album, from The Telegraph Company, is a stellar body of work.

    4 out of 5 stars Great songwriting.......2005-01-20

Don't know about the "Stew Rocks My World" one star review. My guess is the guy's either mentally unbalanced or dislikes good music. Regardless, "Guest Host" is Stew's debut solo CD and has amazing, wonderful moments. He's truly one of the best songwriters around today.

5 out of 5 stars The best album I bought all year!.......2001-10-03

    Ok, It's a 2000 release, but it's the best album I bought in 2001.

It was one of those Cds I just took a chance on... I liked the cover, the blurbs, the songs titles, etc. and just went ahead and bought it. I wound up with a cd that instantly entered my all-time top 20 list. The first track "Cavity" gives you a good idea what this album is all about-- killer melody, intelligent lyrics, passionate singing, interesting arrangements. Some songs may be difficult to decipher---they tend to be loaded with insider-references to everything from the music biz to the Bible--- but even if you aren't into unraveling all the lyrics, you'll still be able to enjoy the tunes. Stew sounds like a hybrid of Van Morrison and Harry Nilsson with Elvis Costello-esque lyrics and a penchant for Brain Wilson-like arrangements. Now, how can that be bad? Ultimately though, Stew is a true original, and thoughtful listeners should really enjoy his odd ruminations on love, innuendo-laced turns-of-phrase, LA-music-scene-name-dropping (playing checkers/with a roadie from Save Ferris) and sometimes heartbreakingly honest delivery.

What if one musical mastermind listened to and digested every blip of music that emerged from America in the last half century and made an album that succesfully blended everything from Fleetwood Mac to Motown to The Beach Boys? Well, "Guest Host" would be a pretty good guess. It's the rare record that is obviously referential and reverent, but never come across as derivative or "clever". Many bands have tried and failed to make this type of album. Stew has suceeded wildly. A landmark album.

    5 out of 5 stars A revelation!.......2000-11-07

I use the word deliberately, because Stew's work , while absolutely unique, recalls no one as much as the great Arthur Lee and Love, circa "Forever Changes." Evocative lyrics that demand repeated listening, wedded to memorable pop melodies and harmonies. Soulful and original and definitely fresh, they aren't making too many records like "Guest Host" anymore. That's becuse Stew is an artist who sounds like no one but himself, and yet brings to mind a heyday of songwriting now all but forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Stew -- slow and steady.......2000-11-06

Mark "Stew" Stewart will probably draw in a new fan base with his first solo album. The tracks form an intoxicating brew that connects with the last few decades of LA pop, an earnest broth that adds a bit of Arthur Lee's Love to Burt Bacharach and everything in between. This is catchy stuff, but the emphasis is on the lyrics and Stew's soulful and intoxicating voice. The LA name-dropping won't mean anything to folks outside of the Smog Belt (including references to Echo Park and LA Weekly music scribes who only seem to like obscure bands), but songs like "Rehab" and "She's Really Daddy Feelgood" are urban and urbane cuts that will appeal to anybody who likes 60's influenced pop.

5 out of 5 stars Make A Permanent Space In Your CD changer.......2000-10-22

I just received Stew's "Guest Host" as a gift and I am amazed. Elegantly simple, engaging songwriting at its best. Stew resides permanently in my cd changer.

    4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise.......2007-03-08

I'm one of those The Sound of Music addicted, having lost the track of how many times I've seen it whatever the format is. Therefore, it was basically for curiosity that I've bought this CD. It's a fine recording that takes you to a typical, cosy family reunion. The male voices are not impressive and I wouldn't include the flute solos in the CD. But the final result is very pleasant, excellent to listen in the car while you're driving in the countryside (before lunch, of course).

5 out of 5 stars The original sound of their music. .......2006-01-15

The original von Trapp Family's twenty years of touring and performing internationally had finished, and Maria Augusta von Trapp had written their story in three books and begun several decades of missionary work in New Guinea by the time "The Sound of Music" hit Broadway, and Julie Andrews later sang about her favorite things in a top-earning film. I don't know if the original von Trapp Family benefitted from show and film royalties; they certainly deserved to, for they worked very hard perfecting, under their conductor Dr Franz Wasner, their natural ensemble and music-making talents.

The results may be heard in this first-class CD reissue of recordings they made in New York in 1952 and 1956. The family amassed a large repertoire, collecting items while touring, for example "Waltzing Mathilda" from Australia. The selection here includes a cross-section (loosely titled "Folk Songs") and some of their instrumental items involving recorders, cello and harpsichord. Perhaps the items from their rich Austrian culture are the most satisfying.

This is the second DGG CD release of their recordings. Duration 52 minutes. I recall from my LP collecting days, that there are enough Trapp Family recordings to fill a third CD. I look forward to it.

hes songs are original and he has great sparks running through his cd. its a great cd. i really reccommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Honestly surprised.......2006-12-09

I'm currently addicted to the song, "I Know." I'm a bit too old for Drake and Josh and yet I turn to it sometimes. I'm more of the TRL age and heard Drake Bell was coming on. I was like, "Oh great, this should be cheesey." The song was REALLY good. I haven't heard the whole CD yet, but it definetely has some great songs. Drake Bell actually has really good potential as a musician, which surprises me.

"Baby, only give me a sign, give me a reason, make up your mind, cause darlin only a fool, couldn't see through us, know what we do, you know that it's true..."

    5 out of 5 stars Telegraph Review.......2006-11-20

The GREATEST cd I own! Telegraph by Drake Bell shows his musical talent greatly, everyone in my family loves it... in fact its the only CD I don't get yelled at for playing it loudly.

    5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Great.......2006-11-10

It is no secret to Drake Bell fans that Drake's music is infinitely influenced by the Beatles. And the hauntingly familiar licks that pop up throughout this CD are refreshing - in the end, Drake has utilized his passion and developed something new and something that could make him the next rising star. Folks of all ages will like this CD, and my[...]thinks I'm a "cool mom" since we listen together! Buy it! You won't be disappointed!

    5 out of 5 stars NOT just a teen idol-a SERIOUS musician.......2006-09-06

Don't be swayed by the comments from young girls that have a crush on this handsome young man-I am not young (40's to be exact) and this young man is a seriously talented musician that is being unfairly lumped into the teen idol category and compared to Jesse McCartney, etc. He is NOT of that mold. He is more classic rock, R & B, etc. He is immensely talented and should be taken very seriously as a musician and should get more credit for this than he currently does. This CD will appeal to all ages and maybe even more so to adults if they will give it a listen. If the public and the media continue to refuse to give him the credit he's due simply because he is nice looking/young and therefore has a large pre-teen/teen fan base, then they're going to miss out on a huge talent. Buy this CD and enjoy the MUSIC.

    Album Description

The soundtrack, written and performed by Chris Michie, to the remarkable movie that is the true story of a Bohemian St. Francis and his remarkable relationship with a flock of wild red-and-green parrots. Mark Bittner, a dharma bum, former street musician in San Francisco, falls in with the flock as he searches for meaning in his life, unaware that the wild parrots will bring him everything he needs.

"I watched them for several years with tremendous curiosity. What were wild parrots doing in San Francisco? Then one day a few of them flew to my fire escape, and my whole life changed." From Mark Bittner's memoir "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" Published in January, 2004 by Harmony Books.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Chris Michie's Music Is A Beautiful Partner To The Film.......2007-04-16

This sound track is a beautiful, sensitive, lovely dance partner to Judy Irving's film, "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill." From "Cherry Blossoms", to "Connor's Theme" and "Sophie and Connor", each melody transcends and compliments the film maker's art, one blending into the other perfectly. That Judy and Mark dedicated the film to Chris Michie and his music says so much about the quality, the personification, and the magic the music brought into focus. Contrary to the negative review, I can't think of a more appropriate kind of music than this moving, serene yet evocative guitar playing that blends so well with the key elements of the film: a parrot flock in flight; human interaction with nature; and preservation of the natural order. In a life filled with music, this sound track has to be considered Chris Michie's most significant work. When you listen to the music, you feel the musical interpretation of the events captured in the film-the highest compliment to give. Five stars for this one!

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Music Touches the Heart.......2006-07-21

The subject of the movie in the trailer drew me in first and motivated me to see it right away - Awesome work, Judy! Well investigated, well documented, and well shared. And thank you, Mark! You are an inspiration! I must say though, the music motivated me to take the next step: I want the soundtrack! It fit the movie so well and created a remarkable atmosphere. I want Chris' music in my home!

Was I surprised by Max's comments! So much so I went to check him and his taste out. Sorry, what a waste of time! Max likes to hear himself write. Too bad he stopped by...

4 out of 5 stars Thumbs Down For Max.......2006-03-18

Max - what does "realistic dialogue (corrected your spelling)" mean, in a documentary? Are you mixing your metaphors? ALL dialogue in a documentary is realistic, or it is not a documentary. Get your terms straight before you start slagging something. And HOW, pray tell, did the editing ruin the movie? There is no meat in your argument, let alone brain tissue! Try to make your thoughts cogent, and worth the time to read. Did you have a different kind of composer's music in mind, and who and what. Etc. ad nauseam.

If you have not heard the album, and need a "similar" tag, my wife says Chris Michie's music is akin to a wilder form of Craig Chaquico, who I thought had been the guitar player for the opening sequence of film.

The film was dedicated to Chris Michie, who died after making this wonderful music. If the filmmaker and the subject of the film are satisfied with Michie's product, pay more attention to that. Mark was too kind.

5 out of 5 stars The music is GOOD.......2006-02-23

I'm Mark Bittner, the human subject of "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. I want to clear up the reason Judy (with some input from me) chose Chris Michie's music for the film: We LIKED it--a lot. To give it only one star and call it cheesy and campy is ludicrous. No matter what he thinks of the music, one star demonstrates "attitude," which makes Miller-loran's review untrustworthy. I especially love the opening track "Cherry Blossoms." Fluid playing, good melody, integrated parts, interesting harmonies. It's great stuff, sincere stuff. I've played professionally, and I've listened to everything from Buell Kazee to Ornette Coleman, and I know that all that really matters in music (or any other art) is sincerity. I avoid like the devil commercialism and hipness, equally useless qualities. I'm guessing that Max has a hipness problem.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2006-01-31

Unless you have heard the soundtrack and agree with the previous reviewer don't pay any attention to it. Chris Michie was a great talent as anyone who is framiliar with his music and bio would know.

    This is a great soundtrack.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Pick-Up For The Ska-Punk Fan.......1999-12-23

This is a solid album with most of the songs being more of the mellow variety, than the in your face ska-punk of a band such as Operation Ivy. They do have a few high energy songs, including my favorite Telegraph song Head First, Feet First. Also hidden in the bonus tracks there in a nice cover of Operation Ivy's Unity, as well as a bunch of jokes and gags.

5 out of 5 stars BEST SKA BAND!!!.......1999-09-12

    5 out of 5 stars Great Ska.......1999-07-26

Jump Up! Records rules. Anyways, yes this is great ska if you like it buy some more. This one has a version of Unity on it (one of the 'bonus' tracks) that kicks over The Reel Big Fish's. I wanna know why they didn't put that one on the operation ivy compilation. Anyways with all the sellouts screwing up and then saying they're just going in a new direction, Telegraph is the exception.

In my opinion, Telegraph (known formerly as the Skolars) is the best ska/punk band playing today. Their lyrics are written with all the style, and impact of Opperation Ivy. And their music expertly composed, and wickedly catchy. Their disk has yet to leave my cd player.

    4 out of 5 stars Barn-burning blues.......2003-12-04

Ohio guitarist Sonny Moorman shines on this top notch collection of blues and bars rock numbers that pretty much covers the bases from slow, mean blues to rapid-fire riffs to rockabilly tinged tunes.

He mines quite a bit of rock history here, showing great taste in his influences: early Fleetwood Mac (during the Peter Green days), Rory Gallagher, Clapton (way back when), Mayall, ZZ Top, and Robin Trower all come to mind.

Throughout, Mr. Moorman's energy is undiminished, and if one wants to argue that his sound is a bit raw, I'll take the spirit and fire here anyway over the polished pabulum the record companies try to force feed us.

One wonders why Mr. Moorman has not achieved greater recognition given the void still left from Stevie Ray's untimely passage.

Give this one a listen and play it loud.

3 out of 5 stars Sing for love. Sing for magic. Sing for always........2006-04-26

This is another album by the prolific Jandek. It was released in 1986. The instrumentation is Jandek on electric guitar (and occasionally harmonica) and someone else on drums. There may be someone on bass guitar, but the album is mixed so poorly, it's hard to tell. All the instruments are amateurishly played. The girl singer called "Nancy" sings on several songs, sometimes solo, sometimes in duet with Jandek. Most people will find this album unlistenable, but I kind of like it.

    4 out of 5 stars Chant!.......2005-09-24

Another of Jandek's recorded outings with help from The Singer Known as Nancy. Of special note is the song "Governor Rhodes," with Jandek and Nancy going back and forth with lines like "Chant for Love" "Chant for Music" "Chant always." I don't know if they intended it to be humorous, but I got a laugh out of it. 'Mother's Day Card" is Jandek singing the cheesy lyrics of a generic Mother's Day card in a goofy voice--also fairly funny.

The disk veers into psycho territory for "You Painted Your Teeth," and on "Fly" Jandek screams like he's become completely unhinged.

Nancy does her usual fine job with vocals on the tracks she is on. "Telegraph Melts" is particularly good.

There seem to be some other musicians on this--drums and guitars and maybe bass--Jandek's "rock group" period (although nothing on here could be classified as rock music, and I suppose most people wouldn't even call it music). Still, this is an enjoyable and varied effort from Jandek and gang. If you're new to J, I wouldn't suggest you start with this, but it's one of his better ones. (Maybe try Modern Dances first, or Chair Besides a Window).
