Those dismissing the self-titled Scissor Sisters as a product of New York's latest band fad are jumping to conclusions. Yes, there's a certain cabaret aspect to what they do, but that's not to dismiss them as frivolous nightclub entertainment. That's only half the story. "Comfortably Numb" may nod to gay disco but this eclectic bunch of fashionistas have more interesting reference points tucked up their puff sleeves. If anything, the prevailing mood here is sunny AM rock, the kind of thing you might have tuned into in 70s New Jersey. "Take Your Mamma Out," perhaps the first song about coming out to your mother in a gay club, and sung by Jake Shears like primetime Elton, is a cracker. So too "Tits on the Radio"--slick barroom boogie that takes a venomous swipe at New York's increasing conservatism. Best here, though, is the anthemic "It Can't Come Quickly Enough," a retro carve-up of Nick Kershaw and the Pet Shop Boys that's more powerful than it sounds. Ignore it at your peril. --Paul Tierney

Since not liking the Scissor Sisters is tantamount to not liking fun, let's just assume that everyone already adores this band and go on from there, OK? The Sisters' hotly anticipated second full-length feel like a streamlined continuation of their debut. It's hard to imagine no one had ever called an album Ta Dah! before, but then these sexy troubadours have no trouble subtly reworking the past to make it almost-new and always joyous. They may have emerged in a brief window when campy pastiche rock seemed like the next big thing, but just as their friends Fischerspooner did with the electroclash "movement," the Scissor Sister possess an elevated enough sense of fun, popcraft, and good enough connections to carry them for years. Hell, the first track on this album, the wonderful confection "Don't Feel Like Dancin," was co-written with Sir Elton John, and it sounds like Abba, Fleetwood Mac and Xanadu all at once. Other tunes might have you thinking of Bowie or the Bee Gees or Prince or Pink Floyd or even the Carpenters, but only as cagily reimagined in a glittery, wonderful, post-Hedwig/ Velvet Goldmine world. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Fan for life.......2007-06-26

I thought I would have a hard time growing to love another Scissor Sisters album as much as I loved their first one. Now that I've been immersed in it for a few weeks, I have to say that I am more in love with the group than ever! Their sound varies a bit from the first album - less songs that sound like an overlooked Elton John track from the 70's, (although the flavors of EJ can still be found intertwined in several songs); still a good bit of Bee Gees. But new to the mix are traces of Blondie and Queen. Just fantastic stuff, with the perfect Scissor Sisters twist of originality.

While I could review each track independently, let me focus on my current 2 favorites. "Kiss You Off" should be every woman's theme song, whether she is happily partnered (as I am) or not. It's a righteously angry, sexy-woman song. "Land of a Thousand Words" is a ballad worthy of comparing to last album's "Mary" in beauty of both arrangement and vocals.

Ta-Dah is as musically diverse and intelligent as the first album. It's also got the quintessential Scissor Sisters cutting wit, irony (e.g., cheerily reminding us that we were "born to die"), and daring musicality. With this album, they have solidified my adoration and have made me a fan for life. Now if we could only get them to tour more in the U.S.!!

4 out of 5 stars Ta-Dah cd by Scissor Sisters.......2007-05-14

This cd has a good selection of pop music including some danceable tunes. I have listened to it several times and have enjoyed the upbeat and lively tone of the music.

4 out of 5 stars Sophomore Release Holds Up Nicely........2007-04-14

Our favorite retro glam boys (and girl) are back, and they prove once again that they are one of the few good young bands in the mainstream pop genre these days. I must confess to still liking album one a little better than this one, but Ta-Dah has moments that work so incredibly well that I can't give it less than four well-earned stars.

As Miss Amanda said, I was completely blown away by the first cut (co-penned by Sir Elton as you've no doubt read here a million times already), and it reminded me something of old Leo Sayer disco hits, only better. It's addictive and fun to work out to.

"She's My Man" decidedly sounds quite a bit like Sir Elton's "All the Girls Love Alice" from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and is a bit grittier while "Lights" is almost Frankie Vallie "Grease"-styled sophisti-pop.

"Kiss You Off" features Ms. Ana Matronic and kicks some serious kiester, but my favorite songs on here have to be all the melodic and harmony driven novelty-styled ballads like "I Can't Decide," "Intermission," and "Might Tell You Tonight" because Jake Shears has such a clear, fluid, and pleasurable voice. The lyrics to "I Can't Decide" never fail to get a chuckle out of yours truly while those of "Intermission" leave one thinking about their life in general.

There's plenty of old-school disco influence throughout this disc for the glittery fun factor, but the band also shows a bit more of their pensive side this time around. My favorite song on this album has to be the beautiful, ethereal, and somewhat sad "The Other Side." It really is one of the best songs the band has recorded so far, right along with "Laura" and "Take Your Mama."

All in all, if you loved the first SS, obtaining Ta-Dah is simply a must. This group is intelligent, confidently and admirably pretentious, fu"nny, and truly talented. I love them and, by all rights, so should you.

3 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 stars -- The party continues.......2007-04-13

Scissor Sisters' self-titled debut album established them as the kind of band that really belongs in their own genre, complete with songs that although good, would really get little attention outside of dance clubs. Be that as it may, the quintet continues their exuberance with Ta-Dah.

While I wouldn't rate this as high as most of the recent reviewers rated it, it's still a solid album. The first three tracks run into each other though; not that they're bad (well, "She's My Man" is as bizarre as its title), but they really don't sound that much different from each other. Because of this, I was wondering if the album would sound like one long single, but fortunately, things get more varied throughout the rest of the album.

One surprising thing is that unlike on their first album, there are a few mellow tracks to be found on here, like "Intermission" and "Land of a Thousand Words". But the songs are still good, as are "Lights" and "Everybody Wants the Same Thing". And while "Paul McCartney" isn't a bad song, I don't quite understand where the title comes from (one reviewer suggested that the song is a fan letter to Sir Paul, but I'm not so sure).

While you might find a strange lyric here and there, Ta-Dah is still a good album from Scissor Sisters. It's not QUITE as good as their self-titled album, but if you didn't mind dancing to that album, you should have no problem doing the same to this one.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Go Wrong with this one!.......2007-04-10

Love, love, LOVE this CD! It's like the Beatles, Elton John, and the Bee Gee rolled into one (with a little bit of the B52's sprinkled in there). The songs are so different from each other and it's such an upbeat CD that I can't help but shake my booty each time I listen to it. It's definitely a mood lifter!

This band is a little piece of heaven. This and their sophmore album, Ta-Dah, are incredible. You're a fool if you don't buy them.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME CD.......2007-05-12

This CD is totally awesome. I received the CD very quickly and in excellent condition.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and Filthy.......2007-04-19

I tell you there isn't a bad song on this set; the boys and girl from the girtty part of New York City that is still in tact, the Scissor Sisters conquered the UK of course; since unlike any US counterparts lately, they actually enjoy good music across the pond. Combining the elements of Robbie Williams, Elton John, Beck and just about every other enchanting lad of late, the album is a dance wave rock rave from beginning to end - "Filthy Gorgeous", "Take Your Mama Out", the reworking of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" - no matter where your random button hits you're going to hear a dose of pure pop genius. When the album came out I began putting random Scissor Sisters songs on the compilation discs I made and let me tell you I made fans out of every single person who ran and bought the album themselves - and hello Jake Shears can tear up the scenery and there are two gay boys in the band! It's about time music can be music and not just a sub category of queer rock. It gives me hope for the likes of oh, I don't know my band Swivek. Oh and if you haven't already bought it - get We Are Scissor Sisters and So Are You! - a concert film that has tons of fun extras and one of the best live performances I've seen in a while.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT from start to finish.......2007-02-11

This is the second album for the Scissor Sisters and it's leaps and bounds above the first one (of course that can be said for most artist). I bought the CD on a whim after hearing "Land of a Thousand Words" online and have enjoyed every second of the CD. I listen to it at home, in my car, and at work. It helps keep me both calm and sane at work. From the first song "I don't feel like dancing," which oddly enough sometimes does make me want to dance, to the last song, "Everybody wants the same thing" I am transported to another place. I have rarely bought cds where every song is worth it. Usually I jump around on a CD and listen to 4 or 5 tracks on a 12 track cd, this is not the case with Ta-Dah! If you like them, get it; if you have never heard them, get it and you will. I swear that you will NOT be disappointed.

I bought this CD before I bought the debut self titled CD, and I have to say that while the first one is good, the second one was great. However they are both worth a turn in the CD player or MP3 player.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-12-12

One of a stack of CD's I borrowed from a co-worker, this is the album I truly expected to hate. After I listened to it, I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. Scissor Sisters are sort of like a kitschy Elton John disco band. It is interesting on the first listen, but I can see it getting old on repeated listens. I'm a big Pink Floyd fan, but apparently I'm not so much of a purist that I didn't get a hearty chuckle out of the Bee Gee's vocalized, "Edge of Seventeen" sampling, disco-sounding "Comfortably Numb". Still, this band is destined to be a 30 second segment on flash in the pan bands in a future VH-1 "I love the 00's" special.

5 out of 5 stars Damn these catz know how to party!.......2007-01-09

Once again Scissor Sisters have proved themselves with their funky beats and characteristic lyrics. This album, like their previous debut album, leaves a listener dancing till the sun goes down and creates a harmonic atmosphere. The Scissor Sister's groovy tunes are complimented with the Jason Shean's unusual/upbeat voice. And once the disk is over just open up the second panel, which is presented as opening elevator doors, and pop in the bonus disk which does not fail to keep the party moving. Some songs that stand out from the rest are "I don't feel like dancin" from the first disk, "Making Ladies" and "Almost Sorry" from the bonus disk.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-01-08

Absolutely fabulous album (although the elevator doors of my special edition get a little stuck).

I'm sharing my copy with just enough people to make them want to buy their own.

I love love love the Sissor sisters!!! They are funny, brilliant, and great to dance or work out to. I listen to them over and over and never fail to enjoy them !

5 out of 5 stars The Sisters.......2007-01-05

A great follow up to their debut album. The first single released was the very popular "I Don't Feel Like Dancing". Excellent song, video was fantastic. At first, I didn't like most of songs on the album, but at 3rd and 4th listening I fell in love, just like I did with the first album. This band is truly fantastic, and the album is definately worth buying. I hope you enjoy it as much as do.

4 out of 5 stars pleasant sophomore sound.......2007-01-05

Ta-Dah by Scissor Sisters is a decent collection of songs. It just does not quite measure up to their previous CD. The arrangements a good and the recording is excellent, but there does not seem to be a really catchy or memorable tune on this CD as there was on the previous CD. It still is worth a listen to any "Sister" fans and it indicates that they are serious about their music and will most likely continue to produce very good music.

I just had to counter the person who gave this 5-stars. I'm sorry, there is just no conceivable way to classify this as music. First time I heard it I was waiting for the punchline but it never came. I wish i could give it 0 or negative stars.

5 out of 5 stars Can't help but feel like dancin to this ;-).......2006-10-07

I totally love this song. It's so boppy that you totally contradict what the lyrics stand for (you totally feel like dancing to this). It's such a fun and catchy song - one of those ones you cannot get out of your head. The vocals sound a little like Leo Sayer (very reminicent of his You Make Me Feel Like Dancing song), but it's a cool and groovy song on it's own. It's a really great happy song and you have to hear it. You'll love it too because it's hard not to like it - and you certainly can't help dancing to it.

Album Description

A genre and gender-defying mix of rock, pop, and dance inspired by burlesque, drag queens, and glam rock, New York's Scissor Sisters made a big splash in late 2003/early 2004 with their neon-bright re-imagining of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb," the B-side to the band's first single "Electrobix."

They have topped album charts, selling out concert venues and scoring hit after hit in the UK and much of Europe. They have won praise from the praise from Kylie Minogue, Duran Duran, and Elton John.

"Scissor Sisters Remixed!" features the remix versions (including exclusives) by Tiga, and A Touch of Class of the group's hit songs "Comfortably Numb," "Electrobix," and "Filthy Gorgeous."

This isn't a review really. I've ordered probably about 100 CD's from Amazon in the past year. Fillin' up my iPod with genuine copies of music. Of those roughly 100 CD's, I've only got one defective, this one. So, I asked for a replacement. Got another defective one! If I got two defective of the same CD, and nothing else I've got from Amazon has been defective, makes me think they got a defective batch.

1 out of 5 stars I thought only talented bands were allowed to do this sort of thing!.......2006-04-23

Uggh, this is a terrible remix from the one of the worst bands out there: Scissor Sisters. Ooooohhh, they took the songs from their debut and threw in another keyboard! What a great Remix! NOT! All this time I thought that only bands who had talent and wrote their own songs were worthy of remixes. I can't believe the Scissor Sisters took one of the greatest song in Rock (Comfortably Numb), and turned it into a radio friendly dance song! Ahh! What's next? Ashlee Simpson doing Stairway To Heaven? If you want some GOOD remixes, try any of the Nine Inch Nails remix albums, whixh rock. Trent takes the amazing songs he writes and turns them into something completely new- almost as if you've never heard the song before. This sucks.

5 out of 5 stars Let's hear it for rainbow pride!.......2006-04-14

Scissor Sisters are not only a talented band, but they're also fearless champions for equality and tolerance! Rednecks need not apply. Get this album or you're a bigot!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SCISSORING!.......2005-08-25

I Love this album, they did a great job remixing their songs and 2 b-sides. Electrobix wich talks about being gay and feeling weird and The Skins which talks about cheating on someone via internet. The remixes are great especially the FILTHY/GORGEOUS remix!

5 out of 5 stars I love these remixes!.......2005-04-22

What's better than a Scissor Sisters album? The remix album, of course! You have to hear the remix of "Comfortably Numb," and the extended version of "Filthy/Gorgeous" is simply amazing! These guys get better and better. No wonder why they're the fastest-selling group around!

5 out of 5 stars Best Song on the Album.......2006-09-26

This is the best Disco Pop song I've heard in YEARS. I think the Scissor Sisters do the genre justice in a way that only Kylie could compete with. For a song talking about 'not dancing', you'll be hard pressed to keep your feet still or just flat out not getting up out of your seat and boogying!

5 out of 5 stars The Scissor Sisters have done it again!!.......2006-09-13

I can only say that I am extremely excited to hear the new album after listening to this amazing new cut. It is perfect. It's fun, it has killer hooks, and the fact of the matter is this: if you don't like this song then you simply don't know a good time when you hear it. If this single is a harbinger of the quality to be found in the new cd, then it will be a lock as one of the best of 2006.

UPDATE: I have just heard the entire album, "Ta-Dah!". I'm sorry to report that it is quite disappointing. There are a only a couple of good tracks on it. It comes nowhere close to the level of excellence and consistency that marked their debut. You've been warned. Maybe you should just buy this cd single instead.
