Blue-eyed soul crooner Michael McDonald gave his career a much-needed shot in the arm with 2003's Motown, a commercially well-received collection that matched the one-time Doobie Brother and '80s solo star's rich vocals with songs from Hitsville's peak. One year later, McDonald again delves into the Motown bag to come up with another 14 selections from such giants as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Smokey Robinson. McDonald is a distinctive enough vocalist to bring something to these classics, as tough as that task is. Unfortunately, the uninspired production and stilted musicianship keeps the likes of "I Was Made to Love Her," "Tracks of My Tears," and Nowhere to Run" from being anything more than dubious offerings to McDonald partisans. Motown became a hit factory as much on the strength of its foot soldiers as it did its commanding stars, but producer Simon Cline employs thin and lethargic backing tracks where some of the most inspired pop playing in history once stood. Return to the Motown source to hear inspired pop soul music. --Steven Stolder

Happily I do know talent when I hear it as well as friends..........2006-11-29
Michael not only honors them but he puts his own God given talent into each note that is played, every word he sings.
Michael surrounds himself with the best musicans and back up singers. Motown #1 was a hard act to follow but he has done another great job on this album as well.
Thank you Michael, Jp... PS,We miss you in Sants Barbara...
Good but not his best.......2006-07-27
Without going into detail, I liked some of the songs on this album but there are allot of other Motown songs that his voice would compliment even better.
Maybe on Motown 3.

When marketing hasn't supported real talent..........2006-09-22
In that period, 702 used to collaborate with Missy Elliott...after "Steelo", i wish to remember also "Beep Me 911" (from Missy's debut album) and the related video...one of the more original and funny videos that i've seen in the last decade.
I'm been truly sorry for the recent group breakup. Honestly, i don't understand why Meelah Williams hasn't still had the opportunity to pursue a solo career, because her voice is really one of the best of the modern R&B scene.

WOAH!!!!! this girls are great...........2004-11-09
my favourite song on the entire album is 'all i want' which is also on the GOOD BURGER SDTK (which i have as well)... this song is great and the girls sound great....
'get it together' was the breakup song in middle school... when a couple breaks up we used to sing that song when they would walk in the hallways (well you all had to be there)...
anyways, 'no doubt' is another hot joint on the album as well...
all three 702 albums (NO DOUBT, 702, and STAR) are some of the best works in my cd collection, especially STAR which is a constant in my car.... too bad the girls are broken up...
get this album to start or finish your r&b collection no disappointments whatsoever....

When Missy Elliott wants to pretend that she's a one-woman Holland/Dozier/Holland writing and producing hits for the Supremes, she hooks up with 702, the female R&B trio named after the area code for their hometown of Las Vegas. Elliott crafted four songs for 702's 1996 debut, No Doubt, including the hit "Steelo." For this overdue follow-up, Elliott has come up with two more, including the Top 10 pop smash, "Where My Girls At." The single boasts an irresistible push-and-pull rhythm that intersects cleverly with the sing-along chorus, and 702 gives this warning to would-be man stealers a youthful vulnerability that the tougher Elliott could never have managed herself. Elliott's two tracks are the highlights, but Kameelah Williams and sisters Irish and Lemisha Grinstead have made a successful transition from high-school-age prodigies to college-age pros. They don't have overpowering voices, but do display a sure sense of pitch, a surer sense of rhythm, and a seductive sweetness on the catchy new-jack tunes created for them by Whitney Houston cohorts Soulshock and Karlin, Dru Hill's Warren "Smiley" Campbell, and Rick "Dutch" Cousin of Ice Cube fame. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

You'll Just Never Know can bring tears to your eyes, while Never gives a strong standpoint. Majority of these songs could have been singles, and it is worth the buy.
702's Self-Titled Album.......2005-05-17
I listened to this album over my grandparents' home. This album has hot beats and great vocal stylings. 702 has made one hell of a contemporary R&B album like this. Don't compare these girls to TLC and Destiny's Child with this album. I was thrilled and excited to get this CD. Listen before you judge.

702 is 4-EVER!!!!.......2004-11-09
their slef titled album 702 is great work.... the infectious #1 first single 'where my girls at?' produced by missy is hot. it still is the jam till this date... their second single "you dont know' is even better. their harmonies are just tight as ever...'seven', 'finally' are hot joints too...
the interludes are brilliant... they shoudl have just added them up to make a song....
this whole album is tight to def... but their last effort STAR is their best work yet...if you are a 702 fan and like good r&b pop songs then get this album...
Pretty Damn Good!!!.......2004-10-19
Nothing could have been further from the truth. 702 knew they had to come harder the second time around, and that they did. This album was easily one of 1999's acclaimed and highly-anticipated albums.
The first single, "Where My Girls At" left an indelible mark in the world. This is probably the ultimate female anthem, and it was used as an anthem for the WNBA's inaugural season. This song is extremely catchy, for I have heard even the hardest of thugs bumping this in their cars. And it's no surprise; Missy Elliott came hard with this one and 70s definitely delivered well. "Make Time" easily is one of my favorite songs on this album. The beat just grabs you and doesn't let you go until it wants you to! And Kameelah shines. "What More Can He Do" is a nice inspirational song that is quite catchy with its beat and lyrics. It snuck up on me, for I just knew it was a "secular" song. lol. "Finally" also has that inspirational flavor and sounds really nice.
The slower songs really work here. "You'll Just Never Know" sounds so sweet and innocent and all melancholy and depressing at the same time. The vocals here really standout. Also worth mentioning is the song "Don't Go Breaking My Heart". Kameelah sounds as if she really went through it while recording this song, and the strings in the background go along beautifully.
I love the individual interludes (something Destiny's Child did as well on Survivor), and I wish that all of them had come together to fit some sort of song because I know that song would have been excellent. But, the interludes are all nice by themselves.
I have a couple of problems with this album. "Tell Your Girl" sounds like something that Total left off of their Kima, Keisha, and Pam album. I tried to like the song, but it reminded me too much of Total. Also, "Seven" is just too hard for me. Something just went wrong in that song and it just did not do it for me at all. "Will You Be OK" should have been a lot better than it was. The lyrics are fine, but the vocals sound boring and uninspiring.
702 definitely made a fan in me with this album. They grew up in age, attitude, vocal ability, and beauty, but don't give you all the adult lyrics that some groups try so hard to put out nowadays. Hopefully they can borrow from 702's formula...pure, sweet, innocent R&B with a hip-hop edge.

Back in catalogue, again.......2007-04-09
Mary Wells' sudden departure caused seismic waves at Motown. It is well known that some new songs she had recorded were reassigned to other singers, notably a reluctant Brenda Holloway, but it now appears that in May 1964 work had also begun on another record with Marvin Gaye. The evidence is the song You've Got To Be For Real which was assigned to Marvin and Mary, and is released here for the first time, with Mary's vocal having been replaced in September 1964 by that of Kim Weston.
After Motown had caught its breath, the choice of Kim as Marvin's new singing partner must have been quite swift as the B-side of their first joint single, What Good Am I Without You/I Want You 'Round, was cut in July 1964. It must have been a natural choice as Kim had been a supporting artist on the Marvin Gaye Revue concerts that year.
I Want You 'Round was a Smokey Robinson song that Smokey had tried out with Mary Wells the year before but not released. Another early try-out was James Brown's I Love You, Yes I Do which Kim Weston had recorded alone in April 1964 and to which Marvin Gaye added his new vocals that September. Although a few tracks were recorded during 1965, and a one-sided acetate of Baby Say Yes was circulating towards the end of the year, after the failure of What Good Am I Without You in the charts no follow-up single appeared until December 1966, when It Takes Two became a huge smash.
It remains the song for which Kim Weston is best known, and was the only single to be taken from the album Take Two, released a couple of months earlier. It looks from this as if the sessions of March 1966, during which It Takes Two was completed, marked the last time Kim Weston recorded for the label.
The album veered slightly awkwardly between the trademark hot Motown groove of the in-house compositions, many co-written by Mickey Stevenson, and the standards thought by Berry Gordy to appeal to the more "adult" buyers - songs like 'Til There Was You and Secret Love, blessed though they were by some modern arrangements and brilliant playing from the Funk Brothers. Kim's vocals were strong though, and were the foil that coaxed some competitively inspired performances from Marvin. The piecemeal recording process, however, stretched over more than two years, gave a lack of cohesion to the album.
In 1998 the album was released on CD in the Motown Master Series, in an expanded and re-mastered form, under the title Take Two Plus. It sold out quickly, was not re-pressed and has apparently been in strong subsequent demand. Mixed among the twelve re-sequenced tracks (eleven in stereo, I Love You Yes I Do in mono) were a further six mono contemporary duets that had been debuted on various posthumous compilations. The liner notes suggests that these had been intended for a further album tentatively titled Side By Side, though as all six tracks were recorded between 1964 and 1965 apart from I Couldn't Help Falling You (from the March 1966 sessions) it looks as if such an album would have been largely leftovers.
They include three further standards - Exactly Like You and Let's Do It (both borrowing from Nina Simone's versions) and Dinah Washington's Teach Me Tonight, which further weigh down the album. Furthermore, the out-take Teach Me Tonight is another old Mary Wells backing track to which Marvin and Kim had recorded new vocals either in 1965 or, more probably, 1964. One wonders why the bonus tracks were not placed at the end of the disc to retain the integrity of the original album.
The compilers of this 2007 reissue, which differs from the 1998 release only by virtue of one further previously unreleased mono track from 1964 (the excellent Ivy Jo Hunter song You've Got To Be For Real), seem unaware that Take Two was re-mastered entirely in stereo and in the correct running order, and re-released in 2001 in the affordable 2 Classic Albums 1 CD series as Together/Take Two, coupled with the 1963 album Marvin Gaye made with Mary Wells. Buyers of Take Two therefore now have the bonus choices of either seven tracks with Kim Weston or a ten-track album with Mary Wells. Don't ask me to decide, though; I bought both.

Anyway I first purchased this @ CD Warehouse and was never dissappointed. They were a few songs I listen back in the day and some I haven't heard yet. Like to say, this is the definitely the one u should add into your CD player. My man Martin Britt who is also singing and playing the trumpet maybe dubbed the Marvin Gaye/Miles Davis look-alike kinda style 2 me as a matter of fact. While the other guy who is jamming w/ him rapping and singing his way out on his rhymes and stuff. I'm ready to pick up the other CDs which I heard and download and hopefully they'll rock.
I recommend this for those that like jazz, R&B, soul, hip-hop, and a lil rap between. I called this without question hip-hop but really a high jazz album. Somethin' to keep your mind off things and darken your soul.

Product Description
Duet albums have long been a staple of the Motown catalogue, with such classic pairings as Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Marvin and Mary Wells, Marvin and Kim Weston, Marvin and Diana Ross, Diana Ross and Lionel Richie, and Billy Preston and Syreeta. In 1969, Edwin Starr was blazing, just coming off the hit 25 Miles album, a good time to try to see if the company could capture the magic of some of the labels other pairings. Saundra Blinky Williams had grown up in Los Angeles the daughter of a pastor, and she had been active in curch choirs since the age of six. She debuted on Motown with the single I Wouldnt Change The Man He Is, in 1968, and she was tapped as one of the labels future stars. Unfortunately, most of her solo work, save for a few singles, remains unreleased. Among fans Blinky is renowned for her appearance in the film and soundtrack of Lady Sings The Blues, the Billie Holiday bio-pic starring Diana Ross. The album opens up with a soulful rendition of Youve Made Me So Very Happy, a #2 hit for Blood, Sweat and Tears earlier in the year that was itself a cover of a Motown original by Brenda Holloway, and it concludes with the Smokey Robinson classic, Ooo Baby Baby. One particular standout in between is a new version of Oh How Happy, which was written by Starr under his given name of Charles Hatcher for the group Shades Of Blue in 1966. The cute duet grazed the lower reaches of the Hot 100 in the summer of 1969. Starr went on to record his signature hit, War, the following year, so its not a surprise that the pairing was so short-lived. But the reasoning behind the mass of powerhouse, unissued Blinky recordings remains one of Motowns many mysteries.Customer Reviews:

Motown Forever!
Unbelievable!.......2006-03-20
"Just We Two" is a lot funkier and soulful than the other famous Motown pairings, but still has that distinctive universal appeal of Motown. Both Edwin and Blinky were blessed with strong voices that complement each other while standing out on their own. Personally, I enjoy this album more than I enjoy my Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell albums, and that is saying SOMETHING!! The only track I wasn't too fond of was Ooh, Baby Baby, but I have never liked that song that much so I suppose I'll be in the minority about that. Final advice? Grab this album! It's Motown all over, and if you dig the Supremes, Marvin, Stevie, the Temptations, you'll regret not getting this.
