With rootsier, acoustic neofolk ascendant, Marc Cohn's 1991 debut harkens back to the more sophisticated rock and pop inflections of singer-songwriters of two decades past. His supple, velvety baritone and elegant piano-based arrangements frame shrewdly crafted songs ripe with pop touches, none more intricate or deftly executed than the set's epochal "Walking In Memphis," an epiphany rooted in rich musical history, studded with allusions to Elvis and Al Green, Beale Street and Graceland, and buoyed by a rippling piano motif and surging gospel choruses. Giving the set depth, as well as commercial legs, are of "Silver Thunderbird," infectious and intimate in its evocation of his father, husky meditations "Ghost Train" and "Dig Down Deep," a sexy update of Willie Dixon's "29 Ways" (the probable seed for Paul Simon's antithetical "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover"); and the fervent lover's anthem, "True Companion." --Sam Surtherland

Album Description

Born in Cleveland, OH, singer-songwriter Marc Cohn will forever be associated with another great American city by virtue of his signature hit, "Walking In Memphis," one of the stand-out songs of the 1990s. The melodic, literate and dramatic masterpiece spun off his acclaimed self-titled debut album in '91, the same year Cohn won the GRAMMY for Best New Artist. His elegant songwriting artistry shines on two more beautiful and intelligent albums, The Rainy Season and Burning The Daze. Rhino's new collection—the first-ever retrospective of Cohn's work—pulls favorites from his entire repertoire, including "Silver Thunderbird," "True Companion," "Walk Through The World," plus a rare live version of "One Safe Place."

5 out of 5 stars Marc Cohn Greatest Hits.......2007-01-11

I bought this for my husband for Christmas and he was only familiar with one song, Walking in Memphis. He liked the whole album, but did note that through the years from Walking in Memphis his voice changed and seemed to be more "commercialized". Good sounds.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB COMPILATION.......2006-10-04

I don't have this album, but I do have MC's 3 'regular' albums. All of the tracks (with the exception of 'Fallen Angels' and 'One Safe Place') are taken from these albums. MC is probably best known for his big hit 'Walking In Memphis'. There can be little doubt that this is an exceptionally good song, but there are others here which are as good, if not, better (for example - 'True Companion', 'Silver Thunderbird', 'Healing Hands' and MC's very 'laid back' version of the Harry Nilsson song 'Turn On Your Radio').

There is a lot of vocal and instrumental variety here, and the album also demontrates how MC can deliver quality popular music with a wide range of styles and moods (atmospheric/acoustic - southern rootsy/bluesy - funky rockers etc.); all this, together with songwriting of the highest order. Two of the songs feature brief contributions by James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt and I think this gives an idea of where MC is 'coming from'.

I would like to have seen 'Strangers In a Car' and 'From the Station' included, with the possible exclusion of 'Perfect Love' and 'Saints Preserve Us' - but this is just a matter of my personal preference. Having already rated each of MC's other albums 4-stars, this one has got to be 4.5 stars (at least).

5 out of 5 stars Do you like the TV series "House" ??.......2006-09-02

I came upon this singer/songwriter as a result of being a fan of the TV series "House", including the music in the episodes.
"One Safe Place" from episode "Euphoria (2)", the one where Dr. Foreman is rapidly dying, finally did it for me. I had to find out who this musician was, and try to get more of his music.
He won a Grammy fifteen years ago and has not been "in the news" so much since then, but contributing music to the popular TV series should help him out a lot. He's a wonderful musician and I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars 18 Jewels of Life Stories from Marc Cohn.......2006-08-23

Marc Cohn's Greatest Hits features a sweet, sipping bourbon voice from a song writer with a poetic glance and deep understanding of life stories. The music, written and song by Cohn is arranged and accompanied with a rich intricate afterglow of folk rock, down south gospel with a sprig of delta blues. The musicans and choir, including Cohn, rise and fall with a professional clarity that paints the mood and meaning of the notes and lyrics. The quality of the recording honors the effort of the CD.

All 18 songs on this CD are worth the listen and reflection on what they have to tell us of life. The journey through the songs is one of continuity; yet each song has it's own tale.

"Walking In Memphis" is a classic worth the price of the CD alone, but it is only the beginning to a set of masterpieces. I bought the CD for the last song, "One Safe Place" (song live), but would dishonor the effort to say I have a favorite on the album or a lesser favorite.

Truly great recordings become worthy of 5 stars to me when one will return to them over and over again, because they are timeless in their ability to move the soul. Marc Cohn's Greatest Hits is such a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Rediscover this gem again!.......2007-07-10

When I first bought this CD, I played it to death - over and over. I just loved it. I was cleaning up my CD collection by ripping them into mp3s, and guess what? I listened to the mp3s off this CD, and I flipped over this CD all over again. Here it is, a decade and a half later and it's still one of the best CDs I own. I'm enjoying it all over again. Cohn's music is ageless.

"Walking in Memphis" and "Perfect Love" are truly brilliant.

By all means, pick up this CD - it should be in everyone's collection!

5 out of 5 stars Not just a pretty voice..........2007-06-09

Marc Cohn's self-titled cd is wonderful. His voice is rich and varied, and his lyrics, whether sad or fun, are moving.

5 out of 5 stars refreshing.......2007-04-11

This gem has been floating in my collection for 15 years, and every time I pull it out, it sounds as fresh as the day I got it.
I never tire of the imagery, the honesty and warmth that breathes from this remarkable debut.
Makes me want to pack up & move south.....

5 out of 5 stars With my feet ten feet off of Beale.......2007-02-27

The music industry was in sorry shape in 1991. The image of the Grammy's had just taken a serious credibility blow when the Grammy Winner for Best New Artist 1990, the infamous Milli Vanilli, were shown to be a hoax fronted by lip-synching models that couldn't sing. There was no-way anyone was going to have an embarrassment like 1990 happen again. The industry needed a savior...an artist that could write, sing and play his instruments. Marc Cohn was that man.

Awarded the Best New Artist Grammy in 1991 on the strength of "Walking In Memphis," Marc's debut album actually deserved the praise. After years of being force fed studio concoctions that were so faceless that the real singers were suing when the tours went out with models 'singing' leads, Marc harkened back to the age of 70's singer songwriters. James Taylor even pops in for a duet on "Perfect Love," ever symbolic of a passing of the torch.

It was Cohn's gruff but sensitive vocals that made many of these songs memorable. His gritty blues delivery of "29 Ways" (kind of an inverted answer to "Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover") were soulful and rough, recalling Ray Charles. But the tenderness of the terrific "True Companion" brought home his sensitive side. The real hook, though, was "Walking In Memphis." With a tinkling piano opener and a gospel build-up, it was Cohn's calling card to the land of Elvis and southern soul.

There isn't a duff song here, which is also a rarity in this genre. "Memphis," "Silver Thunderbird," "29 Ways" and "True Companion" all received airplay during the album's chart life and "Walking In Memphis" has become something of a standard. (Even Cher has a version of it, and it was her recording that was used in an episode of "The X-Files.") Marc's sophisticated and classic sounding debut remains a shining example of what is good about singer-songwriters when they're at the top of their games.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-11-22

This is a must listen album by Marc Cohn. His great voice accompanies brilliant musical arrangements on the album. The most famous song on the disc, "Walking In Memphis" got (and continues to get) plenty of airplay in Australia but there is much more to this album. I love playing this album late at night when songs like "True Companion" and "Dig Down Deep" sound so right.

4 out of 5 stars Dark clouds overhead.......2007-03-02

The sophomore album from Marc Cohn beat the dreaded second album slump. But it didn't stay away from a serious sense of dread. "The Rainy Season" is a much darker album than his debut, containing mostly songs of loss and loneliness. His admiration of Van Morrison comes through here more so than the first album. Where his debut had the gospel quality of "Walking In Memphis," "The Rainy Season" has nothing that inspiring. In fact, where "Silver Thunderbird" was a tribute of sorts to his father that benefited from a certain cheer, on this album the similarly themed "Rest For The Weary" look at his Mother's point of view and is considerably less lighthearted.

Do it goes throughout "The Rainy Season." If you considered Marc's debut to be boyish, then this album is about the adult. "Baby King" describes the awe of being a father, when no matter what you do, the new center of attention is always going to beautifully upstage you. "Medicine Man" confronts a widowed physician who goes from house call to house call, looking for the lost love of his life in the healing of his patients. Same with "She's Becoming Gold," where the housewife is running "to the end of the drive to talk to her friends on the phone" when she discovers "the man of her dreams isn't all that he seems." This middle-aged melancholy of a woman on the verge is one of my favorites on this CD.

Marc also had a load of guests here, benefiting his rank of Best New Artist Grammy. Bonnie Raitt and members of Los Lobos are along for the ride, and they all compliment marc nicely. This was a sophisticated follow-up to his debut. But without the fire-starter of a "Walking In Memphis" (the bluesy "Walk Through The World" came close), it didn't get the commercial notice it should have. Nonetheless, "The Rainy Season" is a tour-de-force of singer-songwriter prowess and worth a spin in your library.

4 out of 5 stars YET ANOTHER GOOD ALBUM FROM MARC COHN, BUT A LITTLE 'BELOW PAR' ?.......2006-10-03

MC has produced 2 outstanding albums - 'Marc Cohn' and 'Burning the Daze' (some reviewers would disagree about the latter). By comparison, 'The Rainy Season' is more subdued; as with 'Burning the Daze', a wide range of instruments are featured but I think the arrangements are more subtle and restrained (and, arguably, the production has a better balance). On 'The Rainy Season', there is little to fault with the lyrics (as captivating as ever). My main disappointment is MC's voice - to me, it seems to lack much of the emotional fire and passion of the other 2 albums and it also seems to have lost some of it's gritty edge.

There were no tracks that I disliked (I can always find something to enjoy with MC's music) - a few comments about my favourites (songwriters in brackets):

WALK THROUGH THE WORLD (Marc Cohn/John Leventhal) - Upbeat 'radio friendly' song; loved the piano solo towards the end - a bit like the piano in 'The Way It Is' by Bruce Hornsby and the Range.

THE RAINY SEASON (Marc Cohn) - A very evocative song with a 'sultry' feel to it; great production and instrumental arrangement. Features a rather brief appearance by Bonnie Raitt on vocals and slide guitar. Unusual rhythm - might be a 5/4 time signature (Dave Brubeck's 'Take Five' has this time signature).

PAPER WALLS (Marc Cohn) - Really 'gutsy' delivery of the chorus 'paper walls'. Some great lyrics, viz:- 'I heard her cryin' in her darkest hour, I heard the echo from the hotel shower ...'.

FROM THE STATION (Marc Cohn) - Slow tempo song with a poignant melody; one of two tracks featuring Graham Nash and David Crosby on harmony vocals (really nice but barely perceptible).

TWO OTHER TRACKS ARE ALSO WORTHY OF MENTION - 'REST FOR THE WEARY' and 'THE THINGS WE'VE HANDED DOWN'; the overall sound is reminiscent of many of the tracks on the 'Marc Cohn' album but lacking some of the emotional depth.

I was going to give a rating of 3 stars, but I have been influenced by other reviewers (perhaps I've been missing something). If you are a fan, buy this album - there is much to enjoy on it; if you are a casual listener, the recently released compilation album is strongly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Marc Cohn Focuses on the World thru the eyes of Las Vegas.......2005-10-15

Well this cd is not about a rainydude no matter what you might believe. His style is better when he is focused on the small town situations and he can get lost in the shuffle in the 'real world' quote unquote.

3 out of 5 stars Still good but a little bit of slumping here...........2005-10-02

Is it a sophomore slump? Just a bit. On this one, whether at record company urging to "make another hit" or simply from the desire to work with artists he admired, there are plenty of guest artists: David Crosby and Graham Nash lending vocals to track 7 and 10, Bonnie Raitt's slide and voice on the title ditty, Tom Petty bandmate Benmont Tench's organ on 4 songs, and the influence of John Leventhal (heavily over the whole project). The tracks tend to be "thicker" this time, the spare "Things We've Handed Down" is a definite exception.

HIGHLIGHTS:
The title tune is a wish from Cohn to his wife that she'd be there as he does the touring that's the demon of his profession. ("Let me just get these stars out of my eyes/'Cause I just wanna look back over all the years/With you right there standing by my side..") "Rest for the Weary" is part Biblical allusion, part paean to his hard-working dad ("Took a holiday for Christmas/Then he fell asleep beside the tree") and part fear that he's travelling the same road ("Sometimes I can't catch my breath/Sometimes I see my father's footsteps and man, it scares me half to death..") "Mama's in the Moon" finds Cohn mourning his mother. ("I'm rising like the ocean/And I'm crazy as a loon/And I don't know what I'm doing since mama's in the moon...") "Paper Walls" is a nifty number that finds Cohn alone on the road cursing his fate as the couple next door "do that thing that we used to do". The slinky mid-tempo tune ends with a twist as he invites himself to join her after her lover splits following an argument. Imitation gospel number "Baby King" is the opposite end of the spectrum, comparing a newborn's arrival to Jesus' with a backing that recalls the Blind Boys of Alabama. "Medicine Man" is a character sketch of a doctor who's hurting from the loss of his own wife even as he heals others. The most poignant song comes last in "Things We've Handed Down", a song that is sentimental but never saccharine, as Cohn imagines his coming baby ("Will you be a mama's boy/or daddy's little girl?") as not only his future but his link to a dim past ("From places no one one here remembers/Come the things we've handed down")

LOWS:
"From the Station" isn't saved by the appearance of Nash and Crosby. It simply isn't much of a song. "Don't Talk to Her at Night" also leaves me cold.

BOTTOM LINE:
Still a worthy recording that gets a fair amount of play in our house. Not the Cohn I'd dip my toe into at first, but if you've already gotten your feet wet with him you'll probably like RAINY.

3 1/2 stars

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - maybe higher.......2005-06-29

Cohn's sophomore effort is something of a neglected jewel - 'Walk Through The World' gained a reasonable amount of radio play, but it failed to make the charts, and the album peaked no higher than #63 in it's four-month chart reign. But you shouldn't judge an album on its chart success (or lack of).

Most of the songs here are every bit as strong as those from the debut - particularly the title track, 'Medicine Man' and 'From The Station', but also two of the most deeply personal tracks ever recorded - 'Rest for the Weary' and 'The Things We've Handed Down'. Much of the rest is comparatively lightweight, but still very good.

Many people will probably dislike 'Baby King' with it's gospel feel and annoyingly repetitive chorus, but it is the only track here that feels out of place, or, indeed, unwanted.

In conclusion then, if you loved Marc Cohn's debut (and why wouldn't you?) you'll like 'The Rainy Season' an awful lot.

Sidelined by a divorce and single fatherhood, Marc Cohn returns to active duty rejuvenated, if recognizably scarred, since the marginal disappointment of his sophomore outing. Burning the Daze strikes closer to the high mark set by his '91 debut, his sultry vocals and well-crafted songs attesting to the set's careful gestation. Guitarist John Leventhal, a not-quite-secret weapon on the prior albums, is officially aboard as coproducer, an apt choice given his contributions to other recent singer-songwriters' studio work, bringing his versatility and musicianship to bear on a solid new clutch of Cohn originals. "Already Home" opens the set with a sleek midtempo groove, Memphis-cured horn riffs, and allusions to Homer and the Wizard of Oz, "Saints Preserve Us" successfully cops from the Band, and "Lost You In The Canyon" transforms a cell phone into an effective metaphor for more primal communication problems. --Sam Surtherland

This was recommended based on recent purchases. I didn't care for it.

4 out of 5 stars Marc Cohn - Still a great bet.......2006-08-01

Marc Cohn battles the same demons most singer/songwriters encounter: How to follow up the great first album (Even two albums down the road). He wins - mostly. If you are a fan you know exactly what that means. 'Walking in Memphis' still echoes in all of his work as the benchmark to strive for. But this truly isn't where he should be judged. So many of the cuts on that first, self-titled album are genuinely better songs. True Companion. Saving the best for last. These are Marc Cohn. And these are the ones that you won't hear except on XM late at night.

His first album was pedominately written on piano wherein the succeding efforts were driven by guitar. Different vibe. But that opens another dimension to his music missed by many reviewers. His live album, available only through a link on his web site, is the one you really want to make the effort to own.

The long and short of it is this album (you see, I show my age calling it an album)is a worthwhile addition to any collection. This is one of the discs you put on after a lousy day at work while you sit in traffic. After which you put on Jackson Browne's 'Live Accoustic, Vol. 1.'

4 out of 5 stars IN MANY WAYS, A DIFFERENT SOUNDING ALBUM THAN THE FIRST ONE.......2006-06-12

Compared to his first album ('Marc Cohn'), many of the tracks have a much 'beefier' and, I think, a much richer sound with various instruments (incl. acoustic/electric guitars, horns, percussion) having more prominence (arguably, two or three tracks are slightly over-produced). This sound is, no doubt, due to the greater influence of John Leventhal who co-produced (with MC) the majority of the tracks. Only 3 tracks feature MC playing the piano and, as a consequence, much of the 'atmospheric' quality of the first album is absent. Also, it seems to me that MC sings in a higher key at times.

None of the foregoing necessarily means this is, by comparison, a 'bad' album, but it could mean that 'Burning the Daze' does not live up to the expectations of some fans. The album has plenty of good songs and there is, certainly, a lot of vocal and instrumental variety. Many of the tracks have an up-beat 'radio friendly' feel to them; whilst others (notably 'Healing Hands' and 'Ellis Island') retain that emotional edge which characterised MC's first album..

Here are some brief comments about my favourite tracks (as with the first album, there were no tracks that I disliked)(all songs written by MC, except 'Turn On Your Radio' - written by Harry Nilsson):

GIRL OF MYSTERIOUS SORROW - A fairly up-tempo yet haunting song which features much fluent acoustic and electric guitar playing as accompaniment.

HEALING HANDS - One of the tracks which has MC playing the piano and, therefore, has an overall sound similar to many of the tracks on the first album. The track also features a short acoustic guitar solo and and a fairly subdued string arrangement.

LOST YOU IN THE CANYON - A mid-tempo song with some very crisp, emphatic percussion and some fairly 'heavy' electric guitar playing - so this track 'rocks a bit'.

VALLEY OF THE KINGS - This track starts with a fairly slow and delicate intro (reminded me a bit of the intro to 'Gasoline Alley' by Rod Stewart); the instrument being played is, according to the liner notes, a cittern (which sounds like a mandolin). However this soon switches to the much 'heavier' sound of electric slide guitar together with an increase in tempo. MC's vocals, on this track, are pretty 'gutsy'.

TURN ON YOU RADIO - Very 'laid back' sound. MC's vocals are, at times, a cross between singing and drawling the words (this is is not meant to be a criticism). This track features some great vocal harmonies - particularly during the last minute or so when they build to a rhythmic 'chant' up to the fadeout.

I found little to fault with this album and it is well worth a 4-star rating; but a note of caution - if you are considering buying 'Burning the Daze' based on the strengths of the first album, listen to all tracks first (the amazon samples, although brief, do manage to convey the differences in overall sound and vocal delivery).

4 out of 5 stars Soothing.......2005-09-18

The 4th song and the last song are very healing for me. I don't know the name of the 4th song but it sings to my heart. The last song, Ellis Island, also has a lot of soul. Most of these songs are gutsy and gritty. A great CD.

2 out of 5 stars One strange CD.......2004-01-07

Like many others here, I find Marc's voice to sound very strange on the majority of theses songs. It's hin and lacks his trademark timbre. Most don't even sound like him. Also, the album is way overproduced and lacks the raw, live sound of the first two CDs.

    Product Description

from Maverick Magazine / By John Brindle This superior solo debut, from award winning songwriter, hits the spot with intelligent lyrics and gritty, memorable melodies. The opening number, ‘Hard Country’, with it’s pleasant acoustic guitar, surprising organ fills and plaintive vocals is a knockout and lays out the farmers dilemma; love for the land versus the need to make a living: ‘The price of fuel went up, corn went down and I don’t think we’ll be seein’ Bobby again’. ‘Father’s Day’, co-written with friends Craig Bickhardt and Helen Darling also hits the spot. A touching tale about an annual visit to celebrate the ‘finest man I’ve ever known’. He avoids sentimentality but hits the mark: ‘I bought a tie he won’t wear, a silly card to make him laugh’. Other highlights include the Poco styled mandolin driven ‘Taste for Life’, with Rusty Young’s fine dobro (and backup vocals by Young and fellow Poco member Paul Cotton), while ‘Soul Searching’ and ‘Noonday Sun’ reveal the rocking side of Sundrud’s writing. ‘Modern Day Blacksmith’ examines the loss of traditional crafts and harks back to a more innocent time with Jack playing some very tasteful acoustic guitar. The title song, ‘By My Own Hand’, with its contemporary feel suggests this music could appeal to mainstream music buyers besides a more niche country-rock format. Every musician has influences and bands they admire. Jack Sundrud is no different; in his case it is clearly the Beatles. The closing ‘Living My Dream’ is a really moving tribute to the ‘Fab Four’ and how he was inspired to make his life in music: ‘I had a dream the other night, I was out front running lights for the Beatles’. Jack Sundrud is characteristically modest about his music, as he says in the liner notes: ‘This thing is a gift to myself, really, to mark the fact that I’ve somehow managed to stay afloat with music …’ Highly recommended!

    3 out of 5 stars I didnt know Jack.......2007-04-03

I bought this CD without hearing anything on it. Based on the Poco connection and great reviews, I thought I couldnt go wrong. I could not get it out of my mind that I was NOT listening to Don Henley!!! There is not anything really wrong with it, but the voice and style is not my cup of tea. Bottom line, if you like Don Henley, buy it. Otherwise, forget it.

4 out of 5 stars melodic, peaceful album.......2007-02-23

The bassist for Poco, continues the tradition of being a Great Singer,Songwriter. This is a peaceful, melodic cd.."Soul Searchin" does rock out.

    5 out of 5 stars You Can't Go Wrong.......2006-11-08

This to me is one of the most honest recordings I''ve heard yet. Jack has been writing memorable music for as long as I've known him (1969), but this is the best yet. I can listen to him and have my soul soothed and remember the many phases of my own life in Northern Minnesota with family & friends. As stated not every song a gem, but virtually every song does move me and reemind me to look around myself and love life. Thank you Jack Sundrud for a beautiful addition to my music collection.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific Example of Unexpected Brilliance from a Band Bass Player!.......2006-07-09

Ok, Sure that almost everyone has never heard of Jack Sundrud, I knew him prior to Summer '05 as the long time bassist for the great seminal country rock band Poco. Saw Poco live in Summer '05, bought the two solo CD's being sold by the band members after the show (Paul Cotton's CD "When The Coast is Clear" which Sundrud actually produced was the other CD on sale). Met the guys with my wife, they don't get any more down to earth and humble than these guys. Jack thanked me for buying his CD and asked me to listen carefully on the way home to the song "Fathers Day". Was crying by the end of the song, this is an artist with something to say that we all would really benefit from listening to with an open mind. Can't recommend strongly enough the equally beautiful "Forty Again" from another very underated Country artist, John Berry. I find it impossible to listen to these two songs about our Father losing his battle with old age and it's devastating effects without openly crying, because I understand this is how it will end with me as well, except that given a painful 5+ month divorce/seperation proceeding it is possible my 3 children will not be around to say goodbye as I have tried to be there for my father. Is every song perfect? Nope. Is every song unique and great? Nope. Is this a CD with a half dozen gems I will be playing for the next 40 years? Yep! "Hard Country" "Fathers Day" and "Modern Day Blacksmith" are truly exceptional craftmenship from a soulful mind previously limited to playing/singing over and over the hits built by the most famous succession of band Bass Players in rock history - Randy Meisner and Timothy B. Schmidt to be specific, who both were called up the big leagues - The Eagles. Final point listen very carefully to the plaintive counseling offered in "Humility" it is a message we should all heed and benefit from understanding. The Title track "By My Own Hand" will, if you let it, deeply humble you when the song and it's beautiful Piano intro then Hammond B3 organ lead combined with Jack's emotional vocal compels you to reflect upon both key disappointments those you care about have leveled against you and even more powerfully those mistakes you have made which are completely your responsibility, you want so badly to repair/undo/minimize, and come to realize you cannot, Jack speaks to what must be an almost universal truth regarding our wish to "takeback" some key self-imposed mistakes that hurt those we love the most. That is a very powerful impact from a "sleeper" solo album crafted by a replacement bass player in a legendary band long overlooked by critics, music fans and the music industry - Purchase this CD, listen intently and be thankful for the gift you have had the vision to recieve. Regards, Tom

    Album Description

Shane Fontayne's first solo CD "What Nature Intended" has been compared to World Party and Crowded House. A sophisticated collection of guitar driven material, that is at once melodic and romantic, lush with vocal harmony and then lyrically sardonic and forceful, with hard hitting Sixties style pop sensibilities. Los Angeles radio station KCRW has been playing four cuts from "What Nature Intended" and so far ten cuts have been played around the world. Swedish DJ Kalle Oldby describes the CD as:"Soaring, muscular and Beatles inspired. As good as it is unexpected. It's springtime for real musicians indeed"

    5 out of 5 stars Musical Opium...........2005-08-25

I tend to be a real jazz girl and the first couple time I listened to the sound clips on [...]I just thought "ugh.. this isn't my kind of music" but then for some reason I kept going back to listen to it more and more!

There's so much nuance to it, the sounds just draw you down this lush eclectic path where there's always something new to find. There's a very groovy Lennon-esqe vibe to many of the songs. Chris Botti called it "Musical Opium" and I have to agree because once you start listening you just want to hear more and more. I'll happily wander into that poppy field because there's always something different to pick up on in this colorful dreamstate that is "What Nature Intended".

This album is NOT a snooze! "Bubble and Squeek" provides a fabulous momentum to get you moving and is a great way to start your work out!

If you have this album and want to hear it with a rawer edge be sure to pick up "Voodoo at The Mint" from Shane's website. It's a Live recording of the "What Nature Intended" release party and it's brilliant! Voodoo is also a MUST HAVE for any Chris Botti collector!

5 out of 5 stars *The Great Shane Fontayne*.......2005-08-03

This album is fabulous!!! Many people haven't heard the name Shane Fontayne, but he has been playing great music for many years. He toured with Sting earlier this year on the Broken Music tour, and has performed with musicians like Chris Botti, Bruce Springsteen, Marc Cohn, U2, Richard Marx and a myriad of others.

"What Nature Intended" is Shane's first solo album and it is *fantastic*. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but it's really a mixture of upbeat songs and slower, ballad types. One of the things I noticed is each song is unique unto itself... I don't think there are two songs on this album that sound anything alike. His lyrics are really thought out.. they are quite incredible and provocative. Shane is a master guitar player - and you hear that on this album, whether he's playing an electric guitar or an acoustic, or any of the other instruments he plays. Shane also has a beautiful voice - it's very smooth. Chris Botti plays trumpet on a few of the tracks and he is superb, as usual.

If you enjoy this cd, there's a live cd that was recorded at The Mint, with many of the same songs. It's available at Shane's website. Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Shane Fontayne ROCKS!.......2003-10-14

If you haven't had the chance to pick up What Nature Intended, Shane Fontayne's first solo CD, waste no more time and order it today! Newly released, this CD is an amazing journey. You've probably heard Shane's incredible guitar work in the studio or gracing the stage of a number of world reknowned musicians including Springsteen, U2 and a host of others. Currently playing with and opening for phenom Marc Cohn, make it a point to catch this musical great in concert if you're lucky enough to have them stop by a city near you!!!

    2 out of 5 stars zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..........2003-09-15

What a disappointment. I appreciate Shane's attention to vocals, but he could have made a truly singular CD w/his signature guitar sound & style. Instead, he played it safe by strumming his acoustic just like a thousand singer/songwriters before him. And for someone w/supposedly rockabilly roots, he sure forgot the "rocka" part. This could have been called "A Cure for the Sleep-Deprived". The only song that approaches what I expected is "Voodoo in the House" & even there he lets the trumpet drown him out. And, personally, I don't need to hear any 1920s-style songs like the next-to last cut. "When I'm 64" was fine. Now let's move on. I thought I was in for a letdown when I saw Jay Bellerose was the drummer. Sorry, Paula & Shane, but I could play drums as well as him & I don't play anything. Maybe it will grow on me, but I expected the original ideas & sounds I love from Lone Justice & Merchants & I just don't hear 'em.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Music From The Talented Mr. Fontayne.......2003-03-21

After hearing Shane play live, I bought two copies a month ago, one for the car & one for the house. His music is constantly playing in both. Hauntingly beautiful, rocking songs from the heart. Definite Beatles influence .... but with a fresh new sound. Major labels & radio stations take note!! This is GREAT STUFF!!

    4 out of 5 stars Meaningful Lullaby.......2006-06-13

This was a gift to me and actually took a few listens (especially giving attention to the lyrics) before I just fell in love with it. The parenting theme is poignant, with lots of mention of letting go... the saddest part we all dread facing someday. But if you are a folk music lover, it's worth playing at least a few times. Some songs are always better than others, but my sons now request that album for bedtime, and I hear them singing along with the words.
