Culled from a concert/MTV broadcast recorded at Orlando's Hard Rock club, Montreal's Simple Plan ably show here why they've bubbled to the top of a crowded pack of contemporary punk-pop contenders. No hand-wringing, emocore angst or mock street ‘tude for vocalist Pierre Bouvier; he's too busy prodding the crowd into good-natured singalongs of band hits like "Addicted" and "Worst Day Ever" like a hyperactive cheerleader. His bandmates thrash and harmonize away behind him with equal zeal, interjecting an infectious energy to even the band's darker moments – though "darker" is a decidedly relative term in the impossibly effervescent Simple Plan universe – like "Me Against the World" and "God Must Hate Me." Simple Plan bristles here with enough boundless energy to make Green Day envious, even if they scrupulously avoid the latter's penchant for provocative smarts in the bargain. But then songs like "Crazy" (also featured here in an earnest acoustic version exclusive to this set) underscore that Simple Plan succeeds by tapping into the timeless, innocent hopes and fears of its largely teen audience with music that's both punk anxious and bubblegum sweet. This CD/VDC edition includes a video of the entire show, as well as additional acoustic performances of "Welcome to My Life" and "Perfect," as well as an archive of concert photography and some additional band patch/pin swag. --Jerry McCulley

Dismissed by some as the redneck Led Zeppelin, yet beloved by a faithful and grassroots following for just that reason, Lynyrd Skynyrd sailed above it all--even the dark tragedy that befell them less than a year after this landmark live set was recorded in Atlanta. A triple-platinum perennial in its classic-rock heyday, this 25th anniversary edition has been digitally restored and authentically remixed on vintage '70s equipment to great effect. The band's performances have also been resequenced to their original running order to accurately recreate the Skynyrd '70s live experience.

Even Allen Collins's later-overdubbed intro to their ubiquitous epic "Free Bird" has been restored with the original. Cameron Crowe's original notes are also here, long before Almost Famous, and he insightfully puts the album in its proper historical perspective. But the real premium here is the almost full disc of bonus cuts, including previously unreleased versions of "Simple Man," "Gimme Back My Bullets," "Workin' for MCA," "I Ain't the One," "Searching," and other alternate versions recorded during the Atlanta stand ("Gimme Three Steps," "Call Me the Breeze," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Crossroads," "Free Bird"), but until now scattered elsewhere in the Skynyrd catalog. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars "one more from the road" ROCKS & ROLLS with the best of the "live's".......2007-07-24

for 3 decades, i listened to the original album on both vinyl & maxell cassette tapes. while reading the booklet enclosed in the c.d., i read how they were able to add additional dialogue by ronnie van zant, additional crowd reaction, additional guitar solo licks, even an additional "Cream" cover, all unavailable on my double album set. also, alternate versions of afew songs were added on disc 2. all that i can say is "WOW" !!!!!!!!!

a job splendidly well done, in this remastered, reissued "WORK OF ART"!!

ANY skynyrd fan MUST HAVE this in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Allmans apples, Skynyrd oranges.......2007-06-07

This is Skynyrd at their peak, I will argue this was the best rock band on the planet at the moment this album was recorded.

I could partake in the Allman v. Skynyrd argument for eternity. I'm a Sourthern musician myself, and I think there's room for both bands and both albums (as well as many of their other works) in any collection.

I find it intriguing that the aforementioned Skynyrd ripper listed later Black Crowes and Widespread Panic albums as better than Skynyrd live; the "Allman wannabe" label is a much better fit for those latter-day jam bands. All the guitar players I've ever known (including Al Kooper, who I don't know but who I respect the hell out of, considering his pedigree) thought the Skynyrd axe men were very progressive for their day.

The Allman-Skynyrd comparison is apt only from 10,000 feet. Yes, they came from the same area, and many of the influences were similar. But Skynyrd followed the more modern English blues-rock paradigm (see: Cream, Free), and they were more of a pop-song-type band (in the gunslinging, Allmans tradition, of course).

I would even venture to say that Skynyrd followed in the Allmans' footsteps. Indeed, Brother Duane is up there with Hendrix, methinks, and I find the Allmans' work during his lifetime unimpeachable and some of the best modern music ever made.

It gets iffy for both bands after their key members passed. Skynyrd was poised to become even bigger and better with the addition of Steve Gaines -- listen to the guitar work on "Street Survivors." And Ronnie Van Zant knew what the hell he was doing. Meanwhile, everyone knows what happened to Greg and Co. after Duane's untimely death. (I think I sense a pattern here.)

I saw both bands in the space of a year in '75-'76 (including all 3 nights at Fox for Skynyrd), and there was no comparison at that point. Allman biographer Scott Freeman considers that '75 Allman tour to be the band's nadir, and the Skynyrd boys were going for the gold about 9 months later.

I don't think any other Southern band has come close since then. . .

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Album!.......2007-03-19

This is one of the best all-time live albums in rock history and it depicts Lynyrd Skynyrd at their peak. These songs never get old and are just as great if you are at a party or listening alone!

4 out of 5 stars Capturing the essence.......2007-03-08

Lynyrd Skynyrd's "One More From the Road" captures the bands innovative sound live during the group's ascendancy. Their following during this time became more than a "cult" following and after having played on the road for years, their sound became tight and smooth. They could replicate the studio sound quite easily with some improvisation to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This CD!.......2007-02-02

Having seen Skynyrd blow the Who right off the stage in 1973 this album audibly shows what they could do. You can feel it. Southern Shmuthern! It's Rock and Roll at it's best. If you didn't know where they were from you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. People get hung up on this southern rock thing. BFD!! These guys worked to get where they got and are anything but mediocre. I've read the same thing about the Beatles.. that they were mediocre at best! Yeah right!!
This album throws you back in the seat from the moment you drop the needle in the groove. I've worn out vinyl copies, thrown many 8 track copies out the window of my car, more vinyl and cassette and have the original release of this on CD (that sucks) and now this. If you are going to buy only one Skynyrd album, make it this one. They never put on a bad show!! Not even the lineup that is playing today!! They can still smoke any band right off the stage!!

Gov't Mule's arsenal of endless jams that somehow perpetually build in intensity make it natural that this Southern power trio has so quickly returned to the live-record format. The Mule's second concert recording in four years is as virile as the title is impotent. Recorded in Atlanta on New Year's Eve, 1998, this four-disc collector's edition will please fans who weren't satiated by the original 145-minute two-CD set. With a Little Help serves as a road map through their array of influences, as the band wends its way through Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, Free, Elmore James, Traffic, and Neil Young & Crazy Horse before settling in for the night at the John Coltrane Inn for a half-hour of "Afro Blue." Despite all this prime cover material, the highlight may still be Warren Haynes's original "Soulshine" (first recorded while Haynes and bassist Allen Woody were with the Allman Brothers), a gritty and spiritual Muscle Shoals soul number that finds Haynes bouncing guitar licks off young Derek Trucks while the unlikely keyboard tandem of Bernie Worrell and Chuck Leavell dig in behind them. The steady stream of guests--including former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford, former ARU guitarist Jimmy Herring, and reed man Randall Bramblett--keeps things moving along, but in truth, Haynes, Woody, and drummer Matt Abts hardly need any help generating incendiary, densely packed music. This powder keg is a mission statement and a mission accomplished all in one wrapper. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Killer.......2007-06-13

I think of Gov't Mule as the world's best covers band, but meant as a compliment if that's possible. Although Warren Haynes has blossomed somewhat as a songwriter since these tracks were recorded, Mule's best moments are mostly outside the studio, playing borrowed material. Perhaps 'world's best jam band' might be more accurate. Haynes has an insatiable - and infectious - appetite for playing live and he draws some extremely talented peers into his circle. (Having said that, the trio doesn't need much of a hand here, and Haynes dominates the set more than he does on 'Deepest End Live', with its stunning line-up of guests). The highlights are Mule's eponymous signature song (with a quote from Van Morrison's 'I've Been Working') and a superb version of Neil Young's 'Cortez the Killer'. While not straying far from the original, it suffers absolutely nothing by comparison. It is a perfect vehicle for Haynes' soulful voice and also features one of his best-ever solos. Hayne's Anglophile tendencies lead to this set's weaker moments - the Free and Black Sabbath covers. 'Afro-Blue' meanders but, otherwise, there's no let-up in the energy of a super-charged show.

5 out of 5 stars I love MULE!!.......2007-05-28

This is a must have collection for anyone! It may seem costly, but it is worth every penny and then some. If you have never heard of Gov't Mule you need to climb out from under your rock and buy this CD immediately! Do not hesitate or think about it, just do it! We have all of the Gov't Mule albums and a lot of concert downloads from their website and every MB (a week plus worth of music) being taken up on our computer by Mule is done so gladly.

This is an awesome album! I agree with one of the reviewer, this is one that I would take will being stranded anywhere! For me this ranks right up there with Physical Grafitti!

The riffs and slides Warren pulls off are mind blowing and the rest of the band are awesome players. This is one band that does not get the playing time on the radio that they deserve! GET THIS ALBUM, NOW!

I BOUGHT THIS BOX SET BASED ON REVIEWS READ ON THIS SITE THAT IT WAS WORTH THE MONEY. WELL, IT'S NOT! THE FIRST DISC IS REALLY GOOD AND I KEPT PLAYING IT TILL I REALIZED THERE WERE MORE. HOWEVER, WITH HIGH EXPECTATIONS OF REPEATING THE FIRST CD, DISCS 2,3, AND 4 FALL SHORT OF BEING WORTHY OF CONTINUED PLAYING. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND BUY SOMETHING CHEAPER. THE PRICE FOR THIS BOX SET IS TOOOO MUCH!I WOULD GLADLY SELL IT TO SOMEONE WHO'S INTERESTED FOR HALF THE PRICE IF THEY WANT IT.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the 4-hour, 4-CD "Collectors Edition".......2007-02-04

This originally came out as a 2-CD set, followed by the 4-CD "Collectors Edition." Spend the extra bucks and get the 4-CD set...it's well worth it. On recent albums Gov't Mule has moved away from cover versions in favor of more original tunes, but the band always chose their covers wisely. A perfect example is Neil Young's masterpiece from the "Zuma" album, "Cortez The Killer." It's moody and nasty and seductive and loud...the Mule does not mess with the legacy of the Horse. The same is true for Free's "Mr. Big" (also covered on the Mule's debut album), Sabbath's "War Pigs," Little Feat's "Spanish Moon," and Frank Zappa's "Pygmy Twylyte." If you have the slightest interest in this kind of music, especially when it comes to Warren Haynes and his many projects (Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule, Phil Lesh & Friends, The Dead, etc) this is as close to a guarantee of a "busting at the seams" collection of excellent tracks, played with power and passion, as you're gonna get.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-01-20

This CD was a gift. It is very inspiring and is a good acoustic version of Government's Mule stuff. If you are a fan, you'll like this one.

Album Description

Dokken achieved global fame in 1983 as one of the most successful bands to emerge from Los Angeles' era-defining metal scene. They'd originally formed in Southern California in the late '70s, and went on to have initial success in Germany, where the group recorded their debut, Breaking The Chains, in 1981. Back in U.S. after finishing the album, Don remembers, "playing clubs in the L.A. music scene alongside groups such as Van Halen and Quiet Riot" while they shopped for a U.S. deal. Elektra signed them in '82, and they went on to multi-platinum success. When Don Dokken was revisiting the original multi-track tapes for a 25th anniversary edition of Breaking The Chains last year, he came across the long-forgotten masters from those seminal pre-Elektra gigs. Previously unissued with three previously unreleased songs, they present one of metal's most iconic bands at the hungry and powerful moment just before their career became legend.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Finally the real Dokken is on display. Shades of what might have been!!.......2007-06-21

Amazing! Powerful! Dirty! Raw! In other words...all the things Dokken SHOULD have been. Recorded during their first album era, this is a real, honest and incredible recording!! The sound is first rate! Thick and nasty! It is a gem and is worth the price of admission!

So what is so great about this and why didn't Dokken ever deliver like this later in their career? It can't be overlooked that the main difference between this recording and the other Dokken live recordings and tours is the simple fact that Don Dokken PLAYED GUITAR! I love George Lynch...he is incredible...but having that second guitar made all the difference in the world! They sound so much more powerful and full! Listen to the intro to "Young Girls" you can't do that with one guitar!! And "Breaking the Chains" has that classic metal CHUNK CHUNK that the later versions didn't. After the first album and tour Don stopped playing guitar and the sound thinned out and they were never the same again! Also...the vocals are dead on! That also suffered in later tours.

ANY fan of Dokken..but especially the early fans...MUST have this amazing piece of history. I am SOOOO glad it was found and really returns Dokken to the place they should have been all along!

GREAT GREAT GREAT STUFF!!

5 out of 5 stars What a great quality CD!.......2007-05-26

Don Dokken is a class act....when he puts something out it's certain to be of good quality. He treats his fans great. This is one of the best SOUNDING CONCERTS I have ever heard. The QUALITY is A++++. It makes you feel like you are standing at some European gig in 1981 - I love all the in between 'pep-talking' that Don does. The George guitar solo's are outstanding. Mick's drums sound amazing. It's such a nice jewel of a concert - with so many great old Dokken songs (like NIGHT RIDER!), and other unknown's as well. This is a MUST HAVE for any 80's hard rock fan!!!
Thank you DON for putting out such a fine quality CD!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-29

This is a great CD for Dokken fans. They sound great and you get to hear all of the golden oldies from back in the day. It was a very pleasant surprise.

5 out of 5 stars Shows Early Promise.......2007-04-10

From Conception:Live 1981 is all that Don stated and more. He said it was a "raw"and "powerful". He's not kidding! The music is full of energy and showed the promise of things that were yet to come. Easily, this CD stands up to the music on "Tooth and Nail" and "Back for the Attack". If you liked either of these 2 albums, you will definitly love the music here.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2007-04-01

What makes this recording impressive is that it was during the time Randy Rhoades was emerging as the next big thing. George Lynch was equally impressive by these samples. I will definitely get this cd.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

The Clash were the only first-generation punk band capable of (or perhaps interested in) tailoring their up-from-the-gutter firepower to suit arena-size audiences. Here, at last--a decade and a half after their demise--is proof of their substantial stage skills. --Steven Stolder

Amazon.com

Touted for many years as the greatest live band in the world, the only surprise about this live album is that it's taken so long to appear. Recorded between '78 and '82, it captures the London punk torchbearers in all their fury--Strummer spitting out vocals like every breath is his last, the guitars of Jones and Simenon taut and abrasive. Even after all this time, songs like their debut album's scathing "Complete Control" and the dub-fired "Armagideon Time" blister out of the speakers, sending streams of scouring guitars and tight, chunky reggae rhythms into the atmosphere. Two complaints: no "White Riot," and no songs from Give 'Em Enough Rope, the underrated second album. Instead we have material from the sprawling Sandinista and disappointing Combat Rock. These are minor flaws though. Buy Live: From Here to Eternity for the first 12 tracks alone. From the angry, articulate dub of "London Calling" to the full-on force of "I Fought the Law," this is punk at its pinnacle. --Everett True

Always cool to hear songs you like live. Especially if you've never seen the band live. Lots of energy, more so than studio stuff. This has Magnificent Seven, Guns of Brixton, London Calling.

if you are a clash fan this is one of the greatest albums you could own. so do your self a favor and buy it. start to finish, outstanding!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Live Album........2006-12-26

For those of us who are too young to experience The Clash in concert, this is a must have. "From Here To Eternity" is a brilliant representation of how great they truly were, both live and in general. Every performance on this cd is bursting with an insane amount of energy, from "Complete Control" to "I Fought The Law" to "Should I Stay Or Should I Go", not to mention a scorching "The Magnificent Seven". The sound quality and liner notes are excellent, and overall this cd is most definitely a must have for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-05-21

This is an awesome album! Best songs: London Calling, I Fought The Law, Career Opportunities, Train In Vain, and Rudy Won't Fail. Still, only bad part is the lead singer's voice cracks a couple times and sometimes you can't hear the guitars very good. Still awesome.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Important Albums Ever Produced.......2006-04-26

This disc will always serve as proof when people like myself that grew up during the 1980s make the statement that the Clash was the greatest rock band ever. This disc has several of their many great songs recorded live and larger than life. The versions of "Capital Radio" and "Whiteman in Hammersmith Palais" are not to be believed. However, what is so incredible about this album is that all of the songs are so incredible. The sound quality is excellent and the playlist is first rate. I say the Clash is the greatest band ever, if you disagree, listen to this album and get back to me.

5 out of 5 stars Could be the best rock live CD OF ALL TIME!!!.......2007-07-25

After having listened to this triple CD masterpiece all the way through for about the 6th time, I am starting to believe that this could be the best rock live CD of all time. For starters, Scenes from a Memory is a sensational album - and of course DT does the entire album to open up their set. The last couple of songs from SFAM spill on to the 2nd disc, and then they continue with the almost four hour show by going right into their classic "Metropolis" track from Images and Words. The rest of the second disc is very good (highlighted by another great I&W track, "Another Day", and the unbelievable Jordan Rudless keyboard solo track). Then comes the epic 3rd CD, opening with a trio of songs from Awake (called "A Mind Beside Itself" as a group) - the kickin' instrumental "Erotomania", "Voices" and one of my top 10 DT songs, "The Silent Man". But wait ... they still have more to offer us!!! They "appear" to close the show with my personal # 1 DT song, "Learning to Live" (another classic from their groundbreaking Images & Words CD) ... but, of course, they are called out for an encore. Does DT give us a good encore - no, they give us a GREAT 25 MINUTE ENCORE - my personal # 2 DT song, the never before released live uncut version of "A Change of Seasons". BTW, I am a HUGE Yes fan, and in my opinion "A Change of Seasons" more than holds its own with the great 15 minute plus masterpieces that Yes has given their fans (e.g., "Close to the Edge", "The Gates of Delirium", "The Revealing Science of God" and "Ritual" from TFTO, "Awaken", and the very underrated but excellent "Endless Dream" from Talk). There are certainly other great live rock albums that have a claim to being "best of all time" (Led Zeppelin's recently released "How the West Was Won", Kiss's "Alive", The Who's "Live at Leeds", of course "Yessongs", Deep Purple's "Made in Japan", The Rolling Stones "Get Your Ya Ya's Out", and Rush's "Live in Rio" are some examples), but the more I listen to Live Scenes from NY, the more I become convinced that this is the cream of the crop. BTW, the triple live "Score" DT CD released in 2006 is also very good (I especially love the 2nd CD with the full uncut version of "The Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" and "Sacrificed Sons").

5 out of 5 stars Dream Theater's Best LIve Album.......2007-02-05

Wow, a 3 disc live album taken from a single performance in New York City near the end of the "Scenes From A Memory" tour. This is, simply put, Dream Theater's best live album and a portrait of a band at the absolute top of their game. This marathon concert was captured in it's entirety giving the band room to fit in many of their longer pieces that shine in all their glory. The entire "Scenes From A Memory" concept album is played from beginning to end including "Metropolis Part 1" from "Images And Words" which was part of the original story. The almost 25 minute "A Change Of Seasons" is here, as is the complete "Mind Beside Itself" trilogy of ""Erotomania", "Voices" and "The Silent Man". Some of these live versions are arguable better than the original studio versions. Each member of the band gets the chance to solo with Jordan Rudess pulling off a mind blowing keyboard spot at the end of disc two. The band is augmented by a gospel choir during "scenes" and additional female vocals are provided by Theresa T who shines on several numbers on the disc. I think that the biggest highlight of this album is James Labrie. Back when I first discovered Dream Theater I always thought that he was the weak link in the band, but the guy just keeps improving and getting better and his performance on this disc is nothing short of magnificent. The soul wrenching "Spirit Carries On" complete with Theresa and gospel choir in full voice still sends chills up my spine. Labrie is simply incredible on this song as it stands out as one of the high points on this album. His vocal work on "Through Her Eyes" is incredible and he even belts out the rockers with more ferocity than I have heard from him before. The bottom line......if you are looking to pick up a Dream Theater live disc, skip over "Once In A Livetime" and "Live At The Marquee" and go for this one. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dream Theater, on top of their game, Live in 2000 ..........2006-09-17

I remember buying this album late in 2001. It seemed to take forever which was all to do with the unfortunate events of September 11 and the one in a million chance of a band releasing an album on the same day with a cover showing fire streaming out of the World Trade Centre and the New York sky line! A desperate attempt to retract the already shipped copies so they could be replaced with a more "sensitive" cover. The wait was all worth it though for Dream Theater deliver a live album in support of their masterpiece "Scenes from a memory". For me bands typically have up to 3 great live albums in them. 1. When they are new / fresh / energetic / confident. 2. Normally when they are at their creative peak, fully confident and feel on top of the world normally touring on the back of a great album. 3. The last is normally an anniversary type event (eg 20 years, a farewell concert etc). Example of these would be Rush (1. All the worlds a stage, 2. Exit Stage Left and 3. R30) and Dream Theater (1. Live at the Marquee, 2. Live Scenes from New York and 3. Score.

For me "Live Scenes from New York" is Dream Theater's equivalent of Rush's "Exit Stage Left" (1981). It is a the band at the most confident with an album ("Scenes") which like Rush ("Moving Pictures") they were just so proud of.

James LaBrie gives a great performance on vocals (have to admit though his best live vocal performance is on "Score" (2006). John Petrucci is stunning on guitar (it's a close call between his performance here an that displayed on the stunning riffamania shown on "Live @ Budokhan" (2004). John Myung is awesome on Bass (as he always is - also check out his work on Score, stunning). Jordan Rudess really shines on this set, he really is in full flite, his solo has to be heard to be believed. (His performance on "Budokhan" is also top notch and on "Score", well let's just say I'd say the Orchestra would have appreciated his keyboard work, it's is almost unearthly - the "Rick Wakeman / Keith Emerson" of current times, unbelievably good. And last but not least, Mike Portnoy who gives a fantastically energetic performance on drums. This is a 3 hour show (has more material on it than the corresponding DVD) and Mike never lets up. Along with Chester Thompson (Genesis) and Neil Peart (Rush) Mike is in my top three drummers and his display here is awesome. (Also check out "The test that stumped them all" on "Budokhan" or "Score" - awesome performance).

The set list is phenomenal. As with Rush's Exit Stage left there is heaps of material to chose from and it's all top notch. We get the whole of "Scenes from a memory" complete with Choir for the "Sprit carries on" section (this section is totally over the top, exceeded all my expectations - fantastic job). "Metropolis I", "Another Day" and "Learning to live" (yes than can play it live!) from "Images and Words" (1992). From Awake (1994) we get "Mirror", and the whole of "A mind besides itself" ("Erotomania / Voices / Silent Man"). Also included is the whole of "Change of Seasons" from 1995.

It's really a great show, one of those that you can just feel the confidence oozing out of every note / beat / riff.
I can't speak highly enough of this set, it's one of my favourite Live albums over the past 20 years (refer list below ***). If you do decide to get this one I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. 10 out of 10.

5 out of 5 stars A Stunning Live Album.......2006-07-25

Live Scenes From New York (LSFNY)is Dream Theater's third live release (following 1993's Live at the Marquee and 1998's Once in a LIVETime) and is 3CDs and 4 hours of prog greatness, captured on one of those rare nights when legendary bands are at the height of their powers (sort of like The Who's Live at Leeds, Rush's Exit...Stage Left, and Hendrix's Band of Gypsys). LSFNY was recorded on the last date of DT's Metropolis 2000 Tour at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City. The original pressings of the CD (of which I have one) had a flaming apple (based on their flaming heart logo) with the New York skyline (and the Twin Towers) visible...and was released on September 11, 2001 (being a tuesday, when all new CDs are released in America). The CD was recalled and reissued with new artwork, so the burning apple covers are rather rare. That being said, enough of this boring stuff...ON TO THE MUSIC!!!

The first disc and a half consists of DT performing their 1999 masterpiece of an album, Scenes From a Memory, in its entirety. And it is simply stunning to hear them pull it off live. Additionally, the live presentation adds to the music, with extended sections, improvs, and guest star Theresa Thomason (who sang on the album) and a gospel choir. Truly fantastic stuff, from the soaring Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu to the solo trade-offs at the end of Fatal Tragedy, the sweeping Beyond This Life, the poignant Through Her Eyes, all the way to the absolutely majestic sing-along The Spirit Carries On. And how can I forget the technical wizardry of the four instrumentalists contained in Home and The Dance of Eternity, one of the most complex instrumentals EVER! Through it all, singer James LaBrie sounds fantastic.

The second set is started off by an excellent rendition of Metropolis Part 1, and they just move from strength to srength with the material....Just Let Me Breathe, Caught in a New Millennium (a mash-up of two of their songs, Caught In a Web and New Millennium), even throwing Liquid Tension Experiment's Acid Rain (the side project of keyboardist Jordan Rudess, drummer Mike Portnoy, and guitarist John Petrucci). The third disc has the only released live rendition of the entire Mind Beside Itself trilogy (Erotomania, Voices, and the Silent Man), which is excellent, especially the full-band Silent Man. After a marathon Learning to Live, the band returns for the encore to top all encores...the ENTIRE 24-minute A Change of Seasons, which is simply stunning. After the 4 hour show, James LaBrie apologizes for the "short set".....quite the joker, he is. This is also the show where Mike Portnoy collapsed afterwards and spent two hours under blankets recuperating from exhaustion and dehydration!

I have all of DT's live albums and while all excellent, this one is the king of them all (Score isn't out yet, it comes out in a month...that one may top this, who knows?). While anyone new to DT should seek out all of their studio albums (starting with Images and Words) before embarking upon listening to the live ones, they are completely worth purchasing. And this one is simply stunning.

4 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-11-07

What a concert CD! The guys hit every musical note, and there is an increased intensity. The choir and Theresa Thomason's vocals are really great. And James Labrie's vocals are not as bad as some other reviewers have said. JLB tends to go flat on really high parts, but it is not that bad here, and certainly not as bad at Once in a Livetime, where he is so horrible I can't even stand it.

5 out of 5 stars The Doors Break on Through.......2005-04-04

"Live in Hollywood" features the absolute best of The Doors' Aquarius Theatre concerts from July 1969. The performances of "Back Door Man," "Break On Through," "When the Music's Over" and "Light My Fire" are superb. A few tracks were previously released on "Absolutely Live," but this CD compilation remains far superior. The professional sound quality surpasses the plethora of Doors bootlegs on the market.

3 out of 5 stars Good for casual fan, otherwise don't bother.......2003-06-22

This single disc takes highlights from the two separate double disc Aquarius sets released by Bright Midnight Records (through the Doors' website) in the past few years.

Die hard fans who want everything will go out and buy the two, complete concerts from Bright Midnight. If you don't want to spend, then this would be a good pickup. Just keep in mind you're hearing selections, not a complete show.

Of course, when it comes to releasing the same material in various forms as different products, the Doors have few rivals. (The Who come to mind). They release boxsets and then selection discs from boxsets, single and double disc best ofs and greatest hits.

Great music, just decide how much of it you want.

3 out of 5 stars hard-core or moderate fan?.......2002-12-07

I'm a hard-core fan so i didn't spent my money on this cd, i bought the two complete concerts and the rehearsal. 3 double cds that contains all that's on this one and much more. Of course, if you're just a moderate fan, this is a great deal but for a hard-core fans who wants everything and more, buy the complete concerts direct from bright midnight records, otherwise, you would be greatly disppointed to find out that there are complete concerts available and that you just buy some excerpts of the concerts. A hard-core fans buys anything, to be one of them, you must have at least 10 bootlegs like i do.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely live.......2002-08-30

Originally recorded but not used for the album that became "Absolutely Live", this is a fine complete-concert record of the Doors as a legendary live band. The recording is excellent, the performances - for the most part - first-rate, the set list admirably broad, covering most of the albums through that date. As with any Doors concert recording there are some stretches of tedium where the visual element is missed, and a few tracks that run a bit too long. A welcome addition to any Doors collection, though.

4 out of 5 stars will this album be remastered ?.......2006-04-28

Does anyone know if there are plans to remaster this album - as far as I am concerned, Pat Benatar's album discography ends with this album. I just purchased In the Heat of the Night, Crimes of Passion, and Precious Time (finally as individually remastered albums) but I am still waiting on Get Nervous and Live from Earth. You may note that the listing here on Amazon for Get Nervous says remastered but the album specs still put a release date of October 25, 1990 so I am not going to purchase it until that is cleared up. I realize that there are those "pairs" of Benatar remastered albums but I am a purist. I had all of these Pat Benatar albums on vinyl as a kid (first LP my Dad ever bought for me was Crimes of Passion) and want the individual equivalents on CD (but with the remastered sound quality). I'd appreciate anyone with knowledge on these remastering issues.

4 out of 5 stars A little bit of Pat Benatar live goes a fair distance.......2006-01-14

"Live From Earth" provides eight tracks from Pat Benatar's 1982-83 tour, at which point the tiny dynamo had put out four albums, with the last three having made it to the top four ("Precious Time" went all the way to #1). The album made it to #13 on the Billboard album charts, which is not bad in comparison. For me the chief attraction is hearing Benatar sing without all the dubbing that happens in the studio. So the net effect is listening to raw Benatar (as distinct from unplugged, which I can tell you is pretty good after having heard her at Lillith Fair).

I find it interesting that given that Benatar almost always begins her albums with a power house number, two of which are on this album ("Promises in the Dark" and "Heartbreaker"), that she chooses instead to start the night with "Fire and Ice" and leaves the aforementioned songs for a strong finish. The most impressive part of the album is when Benatar and her band start stringing songs together with "I Want Out," ""We Live for Love," and "Hell is For Children." A few of the songs are a little bit different, and "Lookin' for a Stranger" and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" have a little more punch than the originals.

The 1983 album ends with a couple of studio tracks, her hit single "Love Is a Battlefield," which made it to #5, and "Lipstick Lies," which is not exactly a bad filler. Even though eight live tracks is pretty paltry and adding the studio tracks violates the whole point of the album, I end up rounding up because of the latter. It is a close call, and being a big Benatar fan probably has something to do with it because only one of those is going to be interested in this album in the first place.

3 out of 5 stars Not Her Best Shot.......2001-12-28

Now revered for her live vocal dexterity & passionate showcases, this album does not reflect the true electricity of Benatar's stage presence - for that catch her new DVT or indeed the 1983 DVD release Live! From New Haven. The audibility of this album is not the best & sound mixing brings instruments to the fore too much, hence sometimes over-shadowing Benatar's raucous voice. What the cd is worthy for however is the inclusion of Promises In The Dark (not on the live! DVD) & 2 new offerings - the instantaneous classik Love Is A Battlefield & a saccharine pop-type song called Lipstick Lies - even as a die-hard fan I find this one quite hard to stomach. It would have been nice if this album had been the entire show on cd as a momento of the tour - rather, snippets here & there do not give the oomph which reflects a real night on the town with her royalness, Pat Benatar

3 out of 5 stars Good solid live album for the Benatar fan.......1999-05-22

The first thing that strikes you about this album is what a powerful performer Benatar was and is. Her voice belies her small stature and she can really belt it out. The whole live portion of this album is very dynamic and exciting. The stand out tracks are `Heartbreaker' and `We Live for Love': much more powerful and confident performances compared to her first album on which she sounded decidedly nervous and unclear of what persona to project. `Fire and Ice', 'Promises in the Dark' and `Looking for a Stranger' also are exciting performances. `Hell is for Children' unfortunately had become a bit of an anthem and somehow is not all that satisfying and `Hit Me with Your Best Shot' is very disappointing - not a patch on the Crimes of Passion original.

Also the sound is quite muddy with very unclear 'wedges' of sound from Geraldo's guitar - too many effects on his instrument in my opinion.

The two last tracks are not live at all but tacked on studio efforts. `Love is a Battlefield' was a so-so single and not really very good. `Lipstick Lies', though I have to admit I rather like and it has an incredibly catchy tune - her words are better than usual too.

In short, if you like Benatar, you will probably like this album, but I doubt she will make any converts if this is all you hear.

"Wanna buy a monkey?" It'd be more exciting than this safe collection of musical performances from the Late Show. Although some of the duet pairings are intriguing (including Lyle Lovett with Al Green and Elvis Costello with Burt Bacharach), most of the musicians sound like they're well aware they're playing in front of a national TV audience of millions. While performances from Paula Cole and Dave Matthews predate their explosion onto the charts, yesterday's top acts (Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow) sound like musical footnotes here. In truth, old timers Lou Reed and Patti Smith show their forebears how it's done. In the album's defense, it's an eclectic mix--but ultimately an uninspired one. --Greg Emmanuel

I lost this CD in Hurricane Katrina and I had to replace it. Fantastic collection of music.

1 out of 5 stars Sheila Rogers Produced This CD?.......2006-04-29

Let's face it, this compilation is so outdated, no wonder it comes in at a whopping 87,000 on Amazon in sales! The singers on this CD are dinosaurs and some are extinct!

Regardless, this CD's a good self-promotional tool for one of the Letterman's show music producers, Sheila Rogers which is its real purpose. It's her very first! Seeing how she hasn't produced any other records in her career, one can only guess the recording industry didn't think too highly of Ms. Roger's CD producing stunt.

I did some research on this CD's producer and Sheila Rogers is a former Rolling Stone Random Notes gossip columnist who jumped over to Letterman's show as a talent scout, later promoted to being one of the shows music producer's.

Ms. Rogers' manipulation of Letterman, who she personally suggested this CD project to, is a testiment to herself. Let me take this opportunity to worship thee, with 1 well deserved star.

4 out of 5 stars Worth a Reprise.......2005-06-26

"Live On Letterman" is a great collection that stands up 8 years later. Sheila Rogers has done an excellent job producing this for Reprise Records. The sound quality is crisp. The audience applause flows seamlessly between tracks giving the sense to the listener that you're listening to one long concert. There are some delightful tracks on the disc. Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" blazes out with his edgy vocals and slashing lead guitar. Aretha Franklin may have sung "Think" 3,000 times, but she belts it out with an energetic band that'd have James Brown looking up their phone numbers, "I ain't no psychiatrist or doctor with degree, but it don't take much high IQ to see what you're doing to me." Lenny Kravitz also blasts out with "Are You Gonna Go My Way" with a thunderous guitar storm. Other tracks on the set are also strong including R.E.M.'s "Crush With Eyeliner" & the softest track on the set, Elivis Costello & Burt Bacharach on "God Give Me Strength." This little walk down memory lane from the small screen is worth a reprise on your changer. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Live On Letterman : Music From The Late Show [LIVE].......2003-09-17

I've read the other reviews for this incredible CD; and have to admit...many of you are missing the big picture here. This collection of artists and titles are a must for any music buff. I play it regularly and find it endlessly entertaining. I just wish there were others produced and available...with Dave's fame and continued run on late night TV...I'm certain there'd be a dozen by now.

3 out of 5 stars Dead on Letterman.......2002-10-13

Good sound quality from Letterman's vaults, but many of the performers on this CD have been around too long. Quite frankly, this collection resembles the status quo of unchanging music including "dead" I mean REAL deadheads. They had their day in the sun -- time to move on!

Gov't Mule's arsenal of endless jams that somehow perpetually build in intensity make it natural that this Southern power trio has so quickly returned to the live-record format. The Mule's second concert recording in four years is as virile as the title is impotent. Recorded in Atlanta on New Year's Eve, 1998, the 145-minute, two-CD set serves as a road map through their array of influences, wending its way through Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, Free, Elmore James, Traffic, and Neil Young & Crazy Horse before settling in for the night at the John Coltrane Inn for a half hour of "Afro Blue." Despite all this prime cover material, the highlight might still be Warren Haynes's original "Soulshine" (first recorded while Haynes and bassist Allen Woody were with the Allman Brothers), a gritty and spiritual Muscle Shoals soul-style number that finds Haynes bouncing guitar licks off young Derek Trucks while the unlikely keyboard tandem of Bernie Worrell and Chuck Leavell dig in behind them. The steady stream of guests--also including former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford, former ARU guitarist Jimmy Herring, and reed man Randall Bramblett--keeps things moving along, but in truth, Haynes, Woody, and drummer Matt Abts hardly need any help generating incendiary, densely packed music. This powder keg is a mission statement and mission accomplished all in one wrapper. --Marc Greilsamer

3 out of 5 stars a cd that may grow on you.......2006-10-19

I am not a big Gov't Mule fan. The endless guitar solo can get boring. I bought this becasue it is suppsoed to have a reputation as a superb live cd.

When I first listened to this, it did nothing for me. The interesting cover songs of "30 days in a hole", "war pigs" and "Cortez the Killer" were pretty lame versions, far worse then the originals.

Befroe I gave up on the cd, I decided to just play the cd from start to finish rather then aiming for particular songs. That is hwne the cd came alive and I saw the light!

The best sonsg are the extended jams, songs with organ, horns and a groove. THis stuff can definitely grow on you in a hypnotic way.

I now enjoy this cd for what it is, great musicians interplaying with each other. The music is far better than the songs. This is like mood music rather than focusing on one songs.

The best song is "Mule" which starts out rocking but then goes into a tight groove. "Soulshine" is good (but the shorter studio version is better). "Afro Blue" and "Mr. Big" are also jamming standouts.

I am sure seeing them live, with the extended jams, will add to my appreciate for the band. This is the stereotypical jam band.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Live Album You Should Never Buy.......2006-05-25

I know my title is a bit confusing, but it's still a true statement. While this album is excellent, this two cd set doesn't even begin to showcase the awesome show Gov't Mule put on that night. Luckily there is a 4 disc box set of the entire concert that was released some time after this initial release. The box set is double the price of this album, but the content is way more than double in size on the box set.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!.......2003-03-05

I got turned on to Gov't Mule late in the act, but thank God I did. They are a great group of muscians who obviously enjoy playing together. It is too bad that they lost their great bass player shortly after this CD. This CD repressents a taste of how this band performs live. If you want to hear more pick up the 4 CD set of this same concert. However, the set list on this 2 CD set is excellent. It has a number of great covers including: Black Sabbaths "War Pigs" ( can't help but think of Rumsfield and the situation in N. Korea/Iraq these days), Humble Pie's "30 Days in the Hole" with a tease of "I don't need no doctor" at the end, and a Great version of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer". That being said the two tunes that impressed me the most were Dave Mason's "Sad and Deep as You" and Coltranes "Afro-Blue". Just stellar playing throughout. If you like instrumental interplay and long laid out jams this CD is a must. Also some of the other reviewers mentioned the talking in-between songs on the 4 CD set, you won't find that on this set.If you can't afford the 4 CD set this is a excellent way to ease the pain untill that time.

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Album from Great Live Band.......2001-10-31

I recently saw a Gov't Mule show and it was fantastic. They closed off the encores with Rockin' in the Free World, and it was an unreal ending to a concert which kept me through the roof the whole way through. This album actually does a very effective job, in my opinion, of capturing the live power of the band. Though no live album has or will ever come close to The Brothers at Fillmore East, this may come as close as any.

And as for when Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks (who is actually Butch's nephew, not son) play together, I also saw the Allman Brothers this summer, with these two and w/out the kicked out Dickey Betts, and it was probably the best I've ever seen. I don't think its unfair to say that Derek Trucks could be a next Duane Allman, and he and Warren dualing to old Allman Brothers blues classics helped me to truly glimpse what it might've been like in the heyday of TABB. If you are a fan of this type of live musical intensity, this album is a can't miss.

5 out of 5 stars Like a kicking mule..........2001-02-01

The music contained on this 2 CD set and the 4 CD Collector`s Edition it is culled from is intended to be a document of a special night of music. The ability of the musicians to lay out their very soul on these cuts and the way that they continue to amaze and excite on every song far out weighs any quibble about the sound isn`t studio quality. if that`s what you want listen to any number of glossy crap on the AM radio. If what you want is astonishing musicians improvising and creating jams that make you smile and wonder at the talent that can come from an individual, then buy this.

I personally have no problem with the sound, because that`s not what is important here. The soulfulness and the love of each musician here for the music is what makes this unique. The way the players are able to blend their own sound into the songs of the Mule, and the great cover versions here, that`s what is important. If you listen to a song, or a whole CD, and when it`s done you sit there in the quiet and you can`t believe what you heard, and so you listen again, and the feeling is still the same, then you know you`ve heard greatness. I can pretend to be qualified enough to critique a musicians work and act like I know more about what they did or did not play, or that their sound isn`t up to par. I can only relay the experience that I felt and heard, and try to express it. This a wonderful collection of songs from a great concert, as I feel are the majority of Warren Haynes and the Mule shows are. They bring together incredible musicians, play great covers, and they sound awesome. By the way, I give this an unofficial 6 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The Who- Live from Toronto- '82.......2007-05-07

Fantastic CD for any Who devotee. The additions of Kenney Jones on the drums (although short-lived) & John "Rabbit" Bundrick from Texas (kind of replaced the explosive drum work of Keith Moon), proved to make this one of the best Who concerts I've ever heard. I highly recommend you purchase the DVD as well, so you can see Roger & Pete at their best.

2 out of 5 stars This one's for completists only.......2007-04-15

Contrary to some other opinions, the Who is so not at their best here. They sound incredibly ordinary, and it's easy to see why they'd want to close up shop after this one if it's the best they could do. Their best live record, of course, is Live at Leeds, and I'd recommend finding an original release without the bonus material. The extra tracks are often extraordinary, but the original is a perfect disc. The Isle of Wight live disc was recorded just months later, and has a stronger set list but inferior sound. The best live disc without Moon is Live at the Royal Albert Hall. Some of it tops Leeds. Completists and Entwistle fetishists will enjoy Toronto for the Ox songs, Sister Disco, Drowned (full band version, Pete singing) and Eminence Front. REO Speedwagon fans will enjoy all the rest.

4 out of 5 stars I was at this show.. It was soooo fun........2007-01-23

I was 13 years old and I was at this show in December 17, 1982. It was in Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens and it was strangely warm that day. (I remember only wearing a jean jacket). What a day! This is the show that was simulcast across North America, in the US it was called Schlitz Rocks America.

The only song missing on this CD (which was missing from the simulcast) is Cry if Want (they put commercials in the middle).

The sound wuality of this disc is great although the bass is very muddy. It would be great to have cleaner up.

Great purchase for those of you unfamilar with The Who live. This is The Who at the top of their post Moon days.

4 out of 5 stars the who live from toronto.......2007-01-12

if you are a fan of the who, then you will enjoy this concert.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a classic Who show gets a release on CD.......2006-11-02

The Who's 2-CD set Live from Toronto is a must for all Who fans.
The album was previously released on VHS as "The Who Rocks America 1982" and was recorded at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in December of 1982 and was initially their farewell concert (they eventually came back).
This performance was the last performance of The Who's 1982 lineup which consisted of original members lead singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend and bass player John Entwistle (R.I.P. Ox) plus former Small Faces and Rod Stewart's Faces drummer Kenney Jones (who replaced the late Keith Moon in 1979) and keyboardist Tim Gorman (who only appeared with The Who for the It's Hard album and tour).
We begin with a spirited version of My Generation which was a great version. I Can't Explain is next and is a stellar version. Next is The Ox penned Dangerous (which also appears on the 1997 remastered It's Hard CD). Next is an awesome version of Sister Disco which is a killer version of this rocker from Who Are You. Next, The Ox (Entwistle) sings his great rocker The Quiet One. Next is a spirited version of the title cut to It's Hard (which also appears on the 1997 remastered It's Hard CD). We follow it with an excellent live version of Eminence Front (which also appears on the 1997 remastered It's Hard CD). Next is Baba O' Riley and what a version. Next is Entwistle's classic Boris The Spider which is a stellar version and has Townshend's demolition of Boris at the end. Next is a long version of the Quadrophenia track Drowned and has Pete on lead vocals and some extra verses at the end and stellar lead work from Pete and harmonica work from Daltrey. We end the first CD with a nice version of Love Ain't For Keeping.
Disc two begins with a spirited Pinball Wizard and we then segue into an excellent version of See Me Feel Me. Next is an excellent version of Who Are You. We follow it with an excellent version of 5:15. Next is possibly the best version of Love Reign O'er Me and gives me goosebumps each time I hear it. Long Live Rock follows and is a nice rocked up version of the classic. Next is the best version of Won't Get Fooled Again from the Jones era. We follow with the best version of Naked Eye I ever heard as it is slowed somewhat and just amazing. We follow with Squeeze Box and is a great version. We follow with a stellar Young Man Blues which was an awesome version though it's hard to rival the Isle of Wight or Kids Are Alright versions. We then end with a version of Twist and Shout which mirrored The Beatles' version before ending majestically.
There were three songs performed not on this album which were Behind Blue Eyes, Dr Jimmy and Cry If You Want (which also appears on the 1997 remastered It's Hard CD).
There is a three disc version of this available (which I found at Wal-Mart) and packaged in a digi-pack. The DVD is slipped in between the booklet and a cardboard slot, so pull out the DVD and put it safely in a DVD or CD jewel case for protection. The DVD is a transfer of "The Who Rocks America 1982" VHS video.
Excellent show and this is recommended!
