Editorial Reviews
Culled from a concert/MTV broadcast recorded at Orlando's Hard Rock club, Montreal's Simple Plan ably show here why they've bubbled to the top of a crowded pack of contemporary punk-pop contenders. No hand-wringing, emocore angst or mock street tude for vocalist Pierre Bouvier; he's too busy prodding the crowd into good-natured singalongs of band hits like "Addicted" and "Worst Day Ever" like a hyperactive cheerleader. His bandmates thrash and harmonize away behind him with equal zeal, interjecting an infectious energy to even the band's darker moments though "darker" is a decidedly relative term in the impossibly effervescent Simple Plan universe like "Me Against the World" and "God Must Hate Me." Simple Plan bristles here with enough boundless energy to make Green Day envious, even if they scrupulously avoid the latter's penchant for provocative smarts in the bargain. But then songs like "Crazy" (also featured here in an earnest acoustic version exclusive to this set) underscore that Simple Plan succeeds by tapping into the timeless, innocent hopes and fears of its largely teen audience with music that's both punk anxious and bubblegum sweet. This CD/VDC edition includes a video of the entire show, as well as additional acoustic performances of "Welcome to My Life" and "Perfect," as well as an archive of concert photography and some additional band patch/pin swag. --Jerry McCulley

Dismissed by some as the redneck Led Zeppelin, yet beloved by a faithful and grassroots following for just that reason, Lynyrd Skynyrd sailed above it all--even the dark tragedy that befell them less than a year after this landmark live set was recorded in Atlanta. A triple-platinum perennial in its classic-rock heyday, this 25th anniversary edition has been digitally restored and authentically remixed on vintage '70s equipment to great effect. The band's performances have also been resequenced to their original running order to accurately recreate the Skynyrd '70s live experience.Even Allen Collins's later-overdubbed intro to their ubiquitous epic "Free Bird" has been restored with the original. Cameron Crowe's original notes are also here, long before Almost Famous, and he insightfully puts the album in its proper historical perspective. But the real premium here is the almost full disc of bonus cuts, including previously unreleased versions of "Simple Man," "Gimme Back My Bullets," "Workin' for MCA," "I Ain't the One," "Searching," and other alternate versions recorded during the Atlanta stand ("Gimme Three Steps," "Call Me the Breeze," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Crossroads," "Free Bird"), but until now scattered elsewhere in the Skynyrd catalog. --Jerry McCulley

Allmans apples, Skynyrd oranges.......2007-06-07
I could partake in the Allman v. Skynyrd argument for eternity. I'm a Sourthern musician myself, and I think there's room for both bands and both albums (as well as many of their other works) in any collection.
I find it intriguing that the aforementioned Skynyrd ripper listed later Black Crowes and Widespread Panic albums as better than Skynyrd live; the "Allman wannabe" label is a much better fit for those latter-day jam bands. All the guitar players I've ever known (including Al Kooper, who I don't know but who I respect the hell out of, considering his pedigree) thought the Skynyrd axe men were very progressive for their day.
The Allman-Skynyrd comparison is apt only from 10,000 feet. Yes, they came from the same area, and many of the influences were similar. But Skynyrd followed the more modern English blues-rock paradigm (see: Cream, Free), and they were more of a pop-song-type band (in the gunslinging, Allmans tradition, of course).
I would even venture to say that Skynyrd followed in the Allmans' footsteps. Indeed, Brother Duane is up there with Hendrix, methinks, and I find the Allmans' work during his lifetime unimpeachable and some of the best modern music ever made.
It gets iffy for both bands after their key members passed. Skynyrd was poised to become even bigger and better with the addition of Steve Gaines -- listen to the guitar work on "Street Survivors." And Ronnie Van Zant knew what the hell he was doing. Meanwhile, everyone knows what happened to Greg and Co. after Duane's untimely death. (I think I sense a pattern here.)
I saw both bands in the space of a year in '75-'76 (including all 3 nights at Fox for Skynyrd), and there was no comparison at that point. Allman biographer Scott Freeman considers that '75 Allman tour to be the band's nadir, and the Skynyrd boys were going for the gold about 9 months later.
I don't think any other Southern band has come close since then. . .

This album throws you back in the seat from the moment you drop the needle in the groove. I've worn out vinyl copies, thrown many 8 track copies out the window of my car, more vinyl and cassette and have the original release of this on CD (that sucks) and now this. If you are going to buy only one Skynyrd album, make it this one. They never put on a bad show!! Not even the lineup that is playing today!! They can still smoke any band right off the stage!!

Gov't Mule's arsenal of endless jams that somehow perpetually build in intensity make it natural that this Southern power trio has so quickly returned to the live-record format. The Mule's second concert recording in four years is as virile as the title is impotent. Recorded in Atlanta on New Year's Eve, 1998, this four-disc collector's edition will please fans who weren't satiated by the original 145-minute two-CD set. With a Little Help serves as a road map through their array of influences, as the band wends its way through Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, Free, Elmore James, Traffic, and Neil Young & Crazy Horse before settling in for the night at the John Coltrane Inn for a half-hour of "Afro Blue." Despite all this prime cover material, the highlight may still be Warren Haynes's original "Soulshine" (first recorded while Haynes and bassist Allen Woody were with the Allman Brothers), a gritty and spiritual Muscle Shoals soul number that finds Haynes bouncing guitar licks off young Derek Trucks while the unlikely keyboard tandem of Bernie Worrell and Chuck Leavell dig in behind them. The steady stream of guests--including former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford, former ARU guitarist Jimmy Herring, and reed man Randall Bramblett--keeps things moving along, but in truth, Haynes, Woody, and drummer Matt Abts hardly need any help generating incendiary, densely packed music. This powder keg is a mission statement and a mission accomplished all in one wrapper. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
Dokken achieved global fame in 1983 as one of the most successful bands to emerge from Los Angeles' era-defining metal scene. They'd originally formed in Southern California in the late '70s, and went on to have initial success in Germany, where the group recorded their debut, Breaking The Chains, in 1981. Back in U.S. after finishing the album, Don remembers, "playing clubs in the L.A. music scene alongside groups such as Van Halen and Quiet Riot" while they shopped for a U.S. deal. Elektra signed them in '82, and they went on to multi-platinum success. When Don Dokken was revisiting the original multi-track tapes for a 25th anniversary edition of Breaking The Chains last year, he came across the long-forgotten masters from those seminal pre-Elektra gigs. Previously unissued with three previously unreleased songs, they present one of metal's most iconic bands at the hungry and powerful moment just before their career became legend.Customer Reviews:
WOW! Finally the real Dokken is on display. Shades of what might have been!!.......2007-06-21
So what is so great about this and why didn't Dokken ever deliver like this later in their career? It can't be overlooked that the main difference between this recording and the other Dokken live recordings and tours is the simple fact that Don Dokken PLAYED GUITAR! I love George Lynch...he is incredible...but having that second guitar made all the difference in the world! They sound so much more powerful and full! Listen to the intro to "Young Girls" you can't do that with one guitar!! And "Breaking the Chains" has that classic metal CHUNK CHUNK that the later versions didn't. After the first album and tour Don stopped playing guitar and the sound thinned out and they were never the same again! Also...the vocals are dead on! That also suffered in later tours.
ANY fan of Dokken..but especially the early fans...MUST have this amazing piece of history. I am SOOOO glad it was found and really returns Dokken to the place they should have been all along!

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
The Clash were the only first-generation punk band capable of (or perhaps interested in) tailoring their up-from-the-gutter firepower to suit arena-size audiences. Here, at last--a decade and a half after their demise--is proof of their substantial stage skills. --Steven StolderAmazon.com
Touted for many years as the greatest live band in the world, the only surprise about this live album is that it's taken so long to appear. Recorded between '78 and '82, it captures the London punk torchbearers in all their fury--Strummer spitting out vocals like every breath is his last, the guitars of Jones and Simenon taut and abrasive. Even after all this time, songs like their debut album's scathing "Complete Control" and the dub-fired "Armagideon Time" blister out of the speakers, sending streams of scouring guitars and tight, chunky reggae rhythms into the atmosphere. Two complaints: no "White Riot," and no songs from Give 'Em Enough Rope, the underrated second album. Instead we have material from the sprawling Sandinista and disappointing Combat Rock. These are minor flaws though. Buy Live: From Here to Eternity for the first 12 tracks alone. From the angry, articulate dub of "London Calling" to the full-on force of "I Fought the Law," this is punk at its pinnacle. --Everett TrueCustomer Reviews:

Dream Theater's Best LIve Album.......2007-02-05
Classic Dream Theater, on top of their game, Live in 2000 ..........2006-09-17
For me "Live Scenes from New York" is Dream Theater's equivalent of Rush's "Exit Stage Left" (1981). It is a the band at the most confident with an album ("Scenes") which like Rush ("Moving Pictures") they were just so proud of.
James LaBrie gives a great performance on vocals (have to admit though his best live vocal performance is on "Score" (2006). John Petrucci is stunning on guitar (it's a close call between his performance here an that displayed on the stunning riffamania shown on "Live @ Budokhan" (2004). John Myung is awesome on Bass (as he always is - also check out his work on Score, stunning). Jordan Rudess really shines on this set, he really is in full flite, his solo has to be heard to be believed. (His performance on "Budokhan" is also top notch and on "Score", well let's just say I'd say the Orchestra would have appreciated his keyboard work, it's is almost unearthly - the "Rick Wakeman / Keith Emerson" of current times, unbelievably good. And last but not least, Mike Portnoy who gives a fantastically energetic performance on drums. This is a 3 hour show (has more material on it than the corresponding DVD) and Mike never lets up. Along with Chester Thompson (Genesis) and Neil Peart (Rush) Mike is in my top three drummers and his display here is awesome. (Also check out "The test that stumped them all" on "Budokhan" or "Score" - awesome performance).
The set list is phenomenal. As with Rush's Exit Stage left there is heaps of material to chose from and it's all top notch. We get the whole of "Scenes from a memory" complete with Choir for the "Sprit carries on" section (this section is totally over the top, exceeded all my expectations - fantastic job). "Metropolis I", "Another Day" and "Learning to live" (yes than can play it live!) from "Images and Words" (1992). From Awake (1994) we get "Mirror", and the whole of "A mind besides itself" ("Erotomania / Voices / Silent Man"). Also included is the whole of "Change of Seasons" from 1995.
It's really a great show, one of those that you can just feel the confidence oozing out of every note / beat / riff.
I can't speak highly enough of this set, it's one of my favourite Live albums over the past 20 years (refer list below ***). If you do decide to get this one I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. 10 out of 10.
*** Some of my favourite Live albums over the past 35 years ...

A Stunning Live Album.......2006-07-25
The first disc and a half consists of DT performing their 1999 masterpiece of an album, Scenes From a Memory, in its entirety. And it is simply stunning to hear them pull it off live. Additionally, the live presentation adds to the music, with extended sections, improvs, and guest star Theresa Thomason (who sang on the album) and a gospel choir. Truly fantastic stuff, from the soaring Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu to the solo trade-offs at the end of Fatal Tragedy, the sweeping Beyond This Life, the poignant Through Her Eyes, all the way to the absolutely majestic sing-along The Spirit Carries On. And how can I forget the technical wizardry of the four instrumentalists contained in Home and The Dance of Eternity, one of the most complex instrumentals EVER! Through it all, singer James LaBrie sounds fantastic.
The second set is started off by an excellent rendition of Metropolis Part 1, and they just move from strength to srength with the material....Just Let Me Breathe, Caught in a New Millennium (a mash-up of two of their songs, Caught In a Web and New Millennium), even throwing Liquid Tension Experiment's Acid Rain (the side project of keyboardist Jordan Rudess, drummer Mike Portnoy, and guitarist John Petrucci). The third disc has the only released live rendition of the entire Mind Beside Itself trilogy (Erotomania, Voices, and the Silent Man), which is excellent, especially the full-band Silent Man. After a marathon Learning to Live, the band returns for the encore to top all encores...the ENTIRE 24-minute A Change of Seasons, which is simply stunning. After the 4 hour show, James LaBrie apologizes for the "short set".....quite the joker, he is. This is also the show where Mike Portnoy collapsed afterwards and spent two hours under blankets recuperating from exhaustion and dehydration!
I have all of DT's live albums and while all excellent, this one is the king of them all (Score isn't out yet, it comes out in a month...that one may top this, who knows?). While anyone new to DT should seek out all of their studio albums (starting with Images and Words) before embarking upon listening to the live ones, they are completely worth purchasing. And this one is simply stunning.

Die hard fans who want everything will go out and buy the two, complete concerts from Bright Midnight. If you don't want to spend, then this would be a good pickup. Just keep in mind you're hearing selections, not a complete show.
Of course, when it comes to releasing the same material in various forms as different products, the Doors have few rivals. (The Who come to mind). They release boxsets and then selection discs from boxsets, single and double disc best ofs and greatest hits.
Great music, just decide how much of it you want.

will this album be remastered ?.......2006-04-28
A little bit of Pat Benatar live goes a fair distance.......2006-01-14
I find it interesting that given that Benatar almost always begins her albums with a power house number, two of which are on this album ("Promises in the Dark" and "Heartbreaker"), that she chooses instead to start the night with "Fire and Ice" and leaves the aforementioned songs for a strong finish. The most impressive part of the album is when Benatar and her band start stringing songs together with "I Want Out," ""We Live for Love," and "Hell is For Children." A few of the songs are a little bit different, and "Lookin' for a Stranger" and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" have a little more punch than the originals.
The 1983 album ends with a couple of studio tracks, her hit single "Love Is a Battlefield," which made it to #5, and "Lipstick Lies," which is not exactly a bad filler. Even though eight live tracks is pretty paltry and adding the studio tracks violates the whole point of the album, I end up rounding up because of the latter. It is a close call, and being a big Benatar fan probably has something to do with it because only one of those is going to be interested in this album in the first place.
Not Her Best Shot.......2001-12-28
Good solid live album for the Benatar fan.......1999-05-22
Also the sound is quite muddy with very unclear 'wedges' of sound from Geraldo's guitar - too many effects on his instrument in my opinion.
The two last tracks are not live at all but tacked on studio efforts. `Love is a Battlefield' was a so-so single and not really very good. `Lipstick Lies', though I have to admit I rather like and it has an incredibly catchy tune - her words are better than usual too.
In short, if you like Benatar, you will probably like this album, but I doubt she will make any converts if this is all you hear.

"Wanna buy a monkey?" It'd be more exciting than this safe collection of musical performances from the Late Show. Although some of the duet pairings are intriguing (including Lyle Lovett with Al Green and Elvis Costello with Burt Bacharach), most of the musicians sound like they're well aware they're playing in front of a national TV audience of millions. While performances from Paula Cole and Dave Matthews predate their explosion onto the charts, yesterday's top acts (Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow) sound like musical footnotes here. In truth, old timers Lou Reed and Patti Smith show their forebears how it's done. In the album's defense, it's an eclectic mix--but ultimately an uninspired one. --Greg EmmanuelCustomer Reviews:

Sheila Rogers Produced This CD?.......2006-04-29
Regardless, this CD's a good self-promotional tool for one of the Letterman's show music producers, Sheila Rogers which is its real purpose. It's her very first! Seeing how she hasn't produced any other records in her career, one can only guess the recording industry didn't think too highly of Ms. Roger's CD producing stunt.
I did some research on this CD's producer and Sheila Rogers is a former Rolling Stone Random Notes gossip columnist who jumped over to Letterman's show as a talent scout, later promoted to being one of the shows music producer's.
Ms. Rogers' manipulation of Letterman, who she personally suggested this CD project to, is a testiment to herself. Let me take this opportunity to worship thee, with 1 well deserved star.

Gov't Mule's arsenal of endless jams that somehow perpetually build in intensity make it natural that this Southern power trio has so quickly returned to the live-record format. The Mule's second concert recording in four years is as virile as the title is impotent. Recorded in Atlanta on New Year's Eve, 1998, the 145-minute, two-CD set serves as a road map through their array of influences, wending its way through Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, Free, Elmore James, Traffic, and Neil Young & Crazy Horse before settling in for the night at the John Coltrane Inn for a half hour of "Afro Blue." Despite all this prime cover material, the highlight might still be Warren Haynes's original "Soulshine" (first recorded while Haynes and bassist Allen Woody were with the Allman Brothers), a gritty and spiritual Muscle Shoals soul-style number that finds Haynes bouncing guitar licks off young Derek Trucks while the unlikely keyboard tandem of Bernie Worrell and Chuck Leavell dig in behind them. The steady stream of guests--also including former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford, former ARU guitarist Jimmy Herring, and reed man Randall Bramblett--keeps things moving along, but in truth, Haynes, Woody, and drummer Matt Abts hardly need any help generating incendiary, densely packed music. This powder keg is a mission statement and mission accomplished all in one wrapper. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:
a cd that may grow on you.......2006-10-19
When I first listened to this, it did nothing for me. The interesting cover songs of "30 days in a hole", "war pigs" and "Cortez the Killer" were pretty lame versions, far worse then the originals.
Befroe I gave up on the cd, I decided to just play the cd from start to finish rather then aiming for particular songs. That is hwne the cd came alive and I saw the light!
The best sonsg are the extended jams, songs with organ, horns and a groove. THis stuff can definitely grow on you in a hypnotic way.
I now enjoy this cd for what it is, great musicians interplaying with each other. The music is far better than the songs. This is like mood music rather than focusing on one songs.
The best song is "Mule" which starts out rocking but then goes into a tight groove. "Soulshine" is good (but the shorter studio version is better). "Afro Blue" and "Mr. Big" are also jamming standouts.
I am sure seeing them live, with the extended jams, will add to my appreciate for the band. This is the stereotypical jam band.

Great Live Album from Great Live Band.......2001-10-31
And as for when Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks (who is actually Butch's nephew, not son) play together, I also saw the Allman Brothers this summer, with these two and w/out the kicked out Dickey Betts, and it was probably the best I've ever seen. I don't think its unfair to say that Derek Trucks could be a next Duane Allman, and he and Warren dualing to old Allman Brothers blues classics helped me to truly glimpse what it might've been like in the heyday of TABB. If you are a fan of this type of live musical intensity, this album is a can't miss.
Like a kicking mule..........2001-02-01
I personally have no problem with the sound, because that`s not what is important here. The soulfulness and the love of each musician here for the music is what makes this unique. The way the players are able to blend their own sound into the songs of the Mule, and the great cover versions here, that`s what is important. If you listen to a song, or a whole CD, and when it`s done you sit there in the quiet and you can`t believe what you heard, and so you listen again, and the feeling is still the same, then you know you`ve heard greatness. I can pretend to be qualified enough to critique a musicians work and act like I know more about what they did or did not play, or that their sound isn`t up to par. I can only relay the experience that I felt and heard, and try to express it. This a wonderful collection of songs from a great concert, as I feel are the majority of Warren Haynes and the Mule shows are. They bring together incredible musicians, play great covers, and they sound awesome. By the way, I give this an unofficial 6 stars.

I was at this show.. It was soooo fun........2007-01-23
The only song missing on this CD (which was missing from the simulcast) is Cry if Want (they put commercials in the middle).
The sound wuality of this disc is great although the bass is very muddy. It would be great to have cleaner up.
Great purchase for those of you unfamilar with The Who live. This is The Who at the top of their post Moon days.

Finally, a classic Who show gets a release on CD.......2006-11-02
The album was previously released on VHS as "The Who Rocks America 1982" and was recorded at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in December of 1982 and was initially their farewell concert (they eventually came back).
This performance was the last performance of The Who's 1982 lineup which consisted of original members lead singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend and bass player John Entwistle (R.I.P. Ox) plus former Small Faces and Rod Stewart's Faces drummer Kenney Jones (who replaced the late Keith Moon in 1979) and keyboardist Tim Gorman (who only appeared with The Who for the It's Hard album and tour).
We begin with a spirited version of My Generation which was a great version. I Can't Explain is next and is a stellar version. Next is The Ox penned Dangerous (which also appears on the 1997 remastered It's Hard CD). Next is an awesome version of Sister Disco which is a killer version of this rocker from Who Are You. Next, The Ox (Entwistle) sings his great rocker The Quiet One. Next is a spirited version of the title cut to It's Hard (which also appears on the 1997 remastered It's Hard CD). We follow it with an excellent live version of Eminence Front (which also appears on the 1997 remastered It's Hard CD). Next is Baba O' Riley and what a version. Next is Entwistle's classic Boris The Spider which is a stellar version and has Townshend's demolition of Boris at the end. Next is a long version of the Quadrophenia track Drowned and has Pete on lead vocals and some extra verses at the end and stellar lead work from Pete and harmonica work from Daltrey. We end the first CD with a nice version of Love Ain't For Keeping.
Disc two begins with a spirited Pinball Wizard and we then segue into an excellent version of See Me Feel Me. Next is an excellent version of Who Are You. We follow it with an excellent version of 5:15. Next is possibly the best version of Love Reign O'er Me and gives me goosebumps each time I hear it. Long Live Rock follows and is a nice rocked up version of the classic. Next is the best version of Won't Get Fooled Again from the Jones era. We follow with the best version of Naked Eye I ever heard as it is slowed somewhat and just amazing. We follow with Squeeze Box and is a great version. We follow with a stellar Young Man Blues which was an awesome version though it's hard to rival the Isle of Wight or Kids Are Alright versions. We then end with a version of Twist and Shout which mirrored The Beatles' version before ending majestically.
There were three songs performed not on this album which were Behind Blue Eyes, Dr Jimmy and Cry If You Want (which also appears on the 1997 remastered It's Hard CD).
There is a three disc version of this available (which I found at Wal-Mart) and packaged in a digi-pack. The DVD is slipped in between the booklet and a cardboard slot, so pull out the DVD and put it safely in a DVD or CD jewel case for protection. The DVD is a transfer of "The Who Rocks America 1982" VHS video.
Excellent show and this is recommended!
