You can say one thing about Amy Rigby: Whether cowering in the dreads of despair or rejoicing in newly sprung reverie, she's the same clever, cynical and exceedingly straightforward songwriter we have come to appreciate since her 1996 solo debut, Diary of a Mod Housewife. On record number five, the 40-something New Yorker once again turns life's observations, both humdrum and vital, into tightly wound, three-minute pop diaries. In "Like Rasputin," Rigby staggers to her feet from the evil man just in time to grapple with "The Trouble With Jeanie," her new husband's peach of an ex-wife. As usual, she finds levity in any situation, and this time she fanaticizes about "Dancing With Joey Ramone," calls out the absurdities of "Needy Men" and explains how the woman in "The Year of the Fling" was "running fast from the past (and) hell bent on having a blast." Like any great author, Rigby is content enough in her craft to expose the imperfections as comfortably as the triumphs. And as with any great songwriter, she always manages to pull it off. --Scott Holter

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Album Description

Renowned songwriter Amy Rigby's fifth album finds the singer, who began her solo career as the Mod Housewife, bringing it all back home. Hailed for her keen eye and sharp wit in tracing the vagaries and victories of modern romance, her new release finds Rigby promising "I Don't Want To Talk About Love No More." But, of course, she does - getting to the heart of the matter and the punch line in due course.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Appealing to many ages - thoughtful and fun.......2006-02-23

This CD is a thoughtful reflection on the peculiarities of life and love. The lyrics are witty and easy to relate to, and the melodies are fun. Amy Rigby is my nine year old daughter's new favorite performer - Rigby sings about topics at the center of all of our lives.

5 out of 5 stars In a world of increasingly marginal and crappy music..........2005-11-30

...Amy Rigby just keeps getting better. I thought she had really hit one out of the park, topping her usual already high standards, with "Till the Wheels Fall Off", but this one is, amazingly, even better...You'll laugh, you'll cry. Nobody does this kind of tragicomic poignancy better, with the exception of Loudon Wainwright III.

Also, if you get the chance to see her live, don't pass it up. She puts on an incredibly rockin', generous and rambling show...

And, if all the above isn't enough to sell you, remember: the woman danced with Joey Ramone!

5 out of 5 stars The Original Desperate Housewife.......2005-11-15

Her best writ since marriage, despair and growing up made her debut a masterpiece a decade ago, and her coolest vocal as well, diary number 5 tackles ex-husbands, ex-wives of new husbands, needy men, dreams of Joey Ramone, all while feeling an infinity with Rasputin. If only Oprah understood the complexities of real womanhood. A songwriter nonpareil, with only Lucinda as a peer. Sheryl Crow could learn a few [dozen] lessons. Why isn't this woman a star with 8 Grammy's and 10 million in the bank? Oh, yeah...the better for her lovers, like me. My grade: A

5 out of 5 stars she got back up again.......2005-09-08

I didn't think she could top her last album but she did. INCREDIBLE. "Rasputin" is the kind of song Lou Reed should be writing. And it gets better and better from there...one killer track after another. This is her most powerful album yet. Every song is right in your face. It's fun, yet serious. Hooks galore. Great production. Super-tight band. Complete success.

5 out of 5 stars Rolling Stone Magazine Review.......2005-09-01

For nearly a decade, this divorced, middle aged New York mom has been turning out pop-wise confessionals with the consistancy and charm of a Nashville Pro - most notably on her 1996 debut "Dairy Of A Mod Housewife". On her fifth album she makes pretty, witty out of brutal honesty and some apparently deserved bitterness. Wether comparing herself to Rasputin or dreaming of quality time with Joey Ramone, her biting humor and often bouyant melodies ensure that "Little Fugitive" never gets mopey or precious.

Billboard Magazine Review

On the first track of singer/songwriter Amy Rigby's fifth album, the one-time "mod housewife" wittily compares herself to czarist Russia's most infamous and rakish character. Odd entrance? Seemingly so, but the sly humor and infectious melody of "Like Rasputin" demands repeat spins. The rest of the 12-song package is equally rewarding, whether Rigby is questioning why her new husband's ex-wife has become a friend ("The Trouble With Jeanie"), dreaming of punk dancing with Joey Ramone or brilliantly tapping into the psychedelic sonics of "Revolver"-era Beatles ("So You Know Now"). Rigby's raw-rockin' delivery and fed-up-with-cheap-crap themes are most prominent, yet she also plays it jaunty on "Needy Men," Roche-like folky with the harmony-rich "Girls Got It Bad" and nostalgic on "Always With Me." Recorded in two days in New York with guitarist Jon Graboff as co-producer, "Little Fugitive" is one of the best pop/rock albums of the year. -Dan Ouellette

Album Description

Music's dramatic master of surreal color and subtle nuance throughout the 1960's and 70's was undoubtedly George Crumb. Works such as Crumb's Lorca cycle (Ancient Voices of Children, Night of the Four Moons, etc.) And his Vietnam War-era scores (Black Angels, Lux Aeterna) immediately won an international reputation, and were quickly taken into the standard repertoire of our century. Now, this musical legend has met his equal- and it's George Crumb himself, with another landmark composition- Quest. Quest is Crumb's first completed work since 1991, with its compositions occupying the composer for more than five years- 1989-1994. Conceived as a guitar concerto, Quest uses the guitar as a leading voice amidst an ensemble of soprano saxophone, harp, contrabass and an exotic array of percussion. Bridge's premiere recording features the work's dedicatee, guitarist David Starobin alongside a stellar Speculum Musicae ensemble that included legendary saxophonist, Donald Sinta. Also given premiere recordings are the last of Crumb's Lorca pieces- Federico's Little Songs for Children, (1986); as well as the 1976 revised version of Night Music I. In both works, Speculum Musicae accompanies the superb American soprano, Susan Narucki.

I am a Crumb fan, although a fan of the music (sound) not necessarily knowledgeable of his compositional methods, the technical aspects to his music, etc. For those who arent into
studying Crumbs music, just listening to it, I recommend ANY other of the Crumb cds on Bridge Records, all of which are fascinating and well recorded. Of the Bridge series on Crumb, this particular cd is a conspicuous disappointment.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A very mixed musical bag . . ........2004-05-14

This recording is a primarily a collection of themes, and music from British television programs, from the 60's and early 70's. These are not the original recordings, but updated versions recorded presumably just for this compilation. Most of the music is performed by various orchestras, including those led by Laurie Johnson, Barry Gray and Tony Hatch. Being from TV, the pieces are mostly short, and are taken from various kinds of programs including comedies, dramas, and adventure/action type shows. There is great variety in the sounds you hear, and there really isn't an overall "theme" to this collection of themes. The rather detailed CD notes provide informative background and some vintage photos.

Music from programs that made it to America, like The Avengers, The Saint, or Danger Man/Secret Agent Man, may be familiar to American listeners, but unless you have been exposed to British television, much of this music will be unfamiliar. There are also some themes from American TV, like Perry Mason, The Fugitive, Peyton Place and Ben Casey, which may be recognizable.

Taken for what they are, some pieces are well done. For those who favor upbeat, action type themes, there is High Wire from Danger Man, the twangy Maigret's theme, and the themes from Riviera Police and Department S. The version of the theme from the Avengers, performed by original composer Laurie Main's orchestra, is stirring, as you would expect. The same cannot be said for the disappointing version of the theme from The Saint. There are a few vocal tracks as well, such as the rousing Stingray, sung by Gary Miller. Many pleasant and easy to listen to tunes such as Roy Budd's Mr. Rose, and the themes from M. Somerset Maughham and Dr. Findlay's Casebook can be found.

Though there will probably be something here for everyone, such a mixed musical bag makes a general recommendation most difficult. For most, the purchase of this set is very much a roll of the dice. If the track list does not look familiar, you might want to look elsewhere.
