This is the first attempt to consolidate all of Sir Elton's hit singles, from three labels, in one collection. It once would've required at least four CDs to own the best stuff here. Many think the legendary performer was at his best in the early to mid-'70s, and the incredible string of singles that ran from 1970's "Your Song" through 1977's "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" remains mighty impressive. But in retrospect, as they're presented here, '80s hits like "I'm Still Standing" and "Sad Songs" add much to an already amazing legacy. Three Disney tunes, the lush "The One," and two from Songs from the West Coast, which was hailed as a return to those '70s golden days, represent the later years. Elton John is good. This CD is even better. I was disappointed to learn that he didn't write a lick of his own lyrics (Bernie Taupin did). Elton John just wrote the music. And I guess we need to hear great music before we'll listen to the lyrics of a song.
Amazon is currently selling the CD for $15. The good news is that there is $20 worth of great music on it. This CD is worth ever dollar and them some. The essential Elton John songs are: Disc 1 - Tracks 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,11,12,13,14,15 & 16 (and I guess Candle In The Wind). Disc 2 - Tracks 1,3,4,5 & 6.

Now my man Reg Dwight's been taking a lot of abuse lately, mainly because he's gay (which has got to be the stupidest reason I can think of to criticize a musician). If you're looking to diss the guy just because of that, take it up with him. But I warn you - he's rich. He's probably got ninja bodyguards.
All joking aside, EJ rules. He's capable of writing the perfect pop song, and hey, that piano! He's awesome with piano! Gotta love his voice, too. In other words, very talented man. I'm not a big fan of Bernie Taupin, but hey, Elton's great. This is not the perfect compilation of his work - I'd have liked to see some songs from Madman Across the Water (like the hits Tiny Dancer and Levon), and I don't like Bennie and the Jets. Song just bugs me. Good news is, that's the only bad song here: this has my favorite all-time EJ song (Crocodile Rock, which is the ultimate feel-good tune - come on, how can you NOT like it? It's not possible! I mean, I have heard one person criticize it, but he had the rough intelligence of a cinderblock), as well as several other great ones, mostly ballads like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Your Song (simply the perfect pop song), Candle in the Wind, Daniel, Rocket Man, and Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me. Then there are the cool stylistic experiments like the gospelly Border Song (Holy Moses) (off his self-titled second, which I recommend - it's the one with Your Song on it), and the New Orleans-sounding Honky Cat. And who says EJ can't rock? Throw on Saturday Night's All Right (for Fighting) and see if you still think that way.
A couple of Elton's studio LP's are really good too - I'd go with self-titled, Madman Across the Water and Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player. Those just starting out with him should start her.e

But in high school circa the early 70's, it was all about Elton. He had then (and still does) a stylistic range that other musicians would sell their souls for, be it the influence of country ("Border Song"), soul ("Bennie and the Jets"), old fashion radio tunes ("Crocodile Rock"), love songs ("Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me") and hard rock (the blistering "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting"). Elton's brashness knew no bounds in those days, be it the flamboyant stage gear to the over the top album package that went with "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," which carried into his music. He was willing to try anything, and his hunger for stardom drove his creativity.
The results of that drive are here in this perfect time capsule about how the seventies were most certainly NOT a dark time for music. That Sir Elton is still releasing albums ("The Captain and the Kid") of strong new material and not taking the easy road of recording a sappy album of standards (I'm looking at you, Rod Stewart) speaks to the genius of Elton and Bernie. While he may have slowed down creatively after "Rock of the Westies" and further best ofs have been issued (like his 60th birthday Rocket Man: Number Ones (Eco-Friendly Packaging)"), this single disc consolidates all that was great about Elton while his career was still hot and hungry.

Still, Elton and Bernie Taupin were riding such an incredible creative wave that all the songs here have become EJ standards. Both the one-off singles "Philadelphia Freedom" and "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" were separate from proper Elton albums, as he'd become so prolific that even songs as great as these were left-overs. At this stage of the game, though, there are so many updated best ofs that you can safely choose a better representation of Elton's rich career. (Try "Rocket Man: Number Ones [CD/DVD Package]" or "Elton John - Greatest Hits 1970-2002.") But for someone who owned this on vinyl back in the day, it does evoke a warm nostalgia for the time when a new Elton John song was a musical event.

Elton John Greatest Hits Volume 2 is a reflection of his highpoints from the mid 70's. The collection mainly is comprised of several good tracks like the somber Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Philadelphia Freedom, and the hard rocking Pinball Wizard from The Who's rock opera Tommy. Although the collection has some good tracks, there are just so many great songs that weren't actually highlighted at all like the soulful Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word, Don't Go Breaking My Heart with Kiki Dee, Burn Down The Mission, and many other great gems.
All in all, Elton John Greatest Hits Volume 2 could've been better, if there was more to have been highlighted. Instead, I really suggest you purchase the double album Elton John Greatest Hits 1970-2002. Saying sorry to this collection, isn't the hardest word.

Elton John's Greatest Hits Vol 3.2.......2007-06-23
After the poorly recieved "Leather Jackets," Elton resigned with MCA and re-established his career with the "Live in Australia" album, Geffen issued a third Greatest Hits collection. It seems Elton must have retained the rights to his materail since this set came out within ten years on MCA and covers hits from "Blue Moves" to "Leather Jackets."
What this set does show is that, even in a somewhat shallow period of success, Elton John still could create finally tuned pop gems. From "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" to "Wrap Her Up" ("Heartache All Over The World" is one of the drops from the prior GHv3 set), this best-off really does pack on hits. It also misses a few key tracks ("Act Of War," "In Neon" and "Nobody Wins" would have been nice), yet includes one bona-fide oldie "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." You're still getting several top tens ("I Guess That's Why..." and "Sad Songs Say So Much" are now classics) to offer that proof of Elton's staying power.
The change between the two GHv3 is that this version has 13 songs (from the Geffen's 12), drops two songs ("Heartache All Over The Word" and "Too Low For Zero"), then adds "Sorry Seems...," "Who Wears These Shoes" and "Don't go Breaking My Heart." The cover art on this one is a step down from the Geffen version, but the sound quality is an improvement. And I always get a smile from hearing Elton and George Michael name-check everyone from Samantha Fox to Nancy Reagen (!?!) on "Wrap Her Up."
TIDY CATCH-ALL.......2007-05-14
Culls from a Very Piano-less Period.......2007-01-16
It starts with that great "I Will Survive"-style anthem, "I'm Still Standing" that just oozes energy and optimism. Then there's his foray into Philadelphia Soul with the help of the great producer Thom Bell. Imagine using the Spinners as your backup group! As an African-American who grew up with this music, "Mama Can't Buy You Love" is an EXCELLENT production that some people like to make fun of for some reason. This is a GREAT production, and I'm always a sucker for a French horn! Besides, Elton John wasn't the first white performer featured on Soul Train for nothing!
"Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" was reincarnated recently on the late Ray Charles' Genius Loves Company album. If Brother Ray loved this enough to record it with Sir Elton, that's good enough for me. But you sure have to be in the proper mood to listen to it. And that's OK; you can't dance ALL the time, can you? "Blue Eyes", even with it's fake string section and electronic Charlie Rich piano, has great production value.
Bernie Taupin is the master of metaphor, and his poignant tribute to fallen friend John Lennon is truly masterful. I'm glad I now have a copy of this recording. The Elton John band put their signature on it as well. Gorgeous.
By the late 70s I had stopped buying Elton John albums, so I discovered a couple of songs here that are really fun to listen to, that I don't remember on Oklahoma radio. ('Nuff said, there.) One is the rockin' "Kiss the Bride" with a Phil Collins-style drum beat and a bass line to beat the band (Dee Murray was an unofficial "funk brother" in my opinion), and the toe-tappin' head noddin' "Who Wears These Shoes" is sheer delight!
"Little Jeannie" is sweet, would have never envisioned a sax solo in an Elton song in the 70s, or electric piano for that matter! This song, for me, epitomizes the newer, softer Elton that made the transition from album rock to Top40 radio in the 80s. Stevie Wonder's harmonica on "I Guess That's Why You Call It Blues" is fabulous.
There's one boner in the bunch! What in the world was Elton into when he made "Wrap Her Up" with Wham's George Michael?! This one is pure garbage, and I hate to even say that about anything with Elton's name on it. If they needed a dance number, I would have rather they put "Bite Your Lip (Get Up and Dance)" from 1976's "Blue Moves" album. But "Wrap Her Up" is one that should have stayed on the album it came from and certainly not included on a hits package; unless it was, heaven forbid, actually a hit..
A common denominator of a lot of the songs from this collection is the glaring absence of Elton's signature piano work! Elton is first and foremost a piano man par excellence, and it seems his piano skills were purposely either de-emphasized or completely eliminated during this period. You barely hear the electric substitute in "Blue Eyes". It could be the Top40 radio influence of what 20-year-olds back then were buying and listening to. I don't know, I was in my twenties in the 80s, and I wasn't even listening to Elton John anymore.
Still, it was a sign of the times in the 80s when electronica ruled and "real" instruments where shunted in favor of Casios. Luckily for me and others who enjoy the master piano player's work, those days are over, and by the mid-nineties, he had re-discovered his old friend and brought it back to the forefront, once he got past all the Disney stuff. I think he needs to re-record "Who Wears These Shoes" at least and put that piano back in there! I would rate this collection, a good snapshot of the times, and other than one I would have definitely left off, a very listenable collection.

Elton John's Greatest Hits Vol 3.2.......2007-06-23
After the poorly recieved "Leather Jackets," Elton resigned with MCA and re-established his career with the "Live in Australia" album, Geffen issued a third Greatest Hits collection. It seems Elton must have retained the rights to his materail since this set came out within ten years on MCA and covers hits from "Blue Moves" to "Leather Jackets."
What this set does show is that, even in a somewhat shallow period of success, Elton John still could create finally tuned pop gems. From "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" to "Wrap Her Up" ("Heartache All Over The World" is one of the drops from the prior GHv3 set), this best-off really does pack on hits. It also misses a few key tracks ("Act Of War," "In Neon" and "Nobody Wins" would have been nice), yet includes one bona-fide oldie "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." You're still getting several top tens ("I Guess That's Why..." and "Sad Songs Say So Much" are now classics) to offer that proof of Elton's staying power.
The change between the two GHv3 is that this version has 13 songs (from the Geffen's 12), drops two songs ("Heartache All Over The Word" and "Too Low For Zer"), then adds "Sorry Seems...," "Who Wears These Shoes" and Don't go Breaking My Heart." The cover art on this one is a step down from the Geffen version, but the sound quality is an improvement. And I always get a smile from hearing Elton and George Michael name-check everyone from Samantha Fox to Nancy Reagen (!?!) on "Wrap Her Up."
Sorry Isn't The Hardest Word.......2003-09-08
The Greatest Hits 1976-1986, is a concept of 13 of Elton biggest tunes within the 10 year span this collection has. There are just so many good tunes to the collection, it almost seems like a guilty pleasure. The music blends quite nicely from Rock and Pop to the mix, including Don't Go Breaking My Heart with Kiki Dee, I'm Still Standing, and Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word. Although the record was remastered in 2001, it really seems like a joke when it comes to remastering records. They just aren't always remade just like they say. The music still seems to be shown in great fashion. Also added on to the mix are great songs like Empty Garden, Sad Songs (Say So Much), and Kiss The Bride.
Still, I was a little bit dissapointed that the record wasn't remastered nicely, but the music is just great. I also was upset that a couple of other songs didn't get on this record including That's What Friends Are For, Elton's collaboration with Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder, and even Tonight and In Neon. Still, for those die hard Elton John fans, this collection might be for you.

Misses too many songs to be a true "greatest" collection.......2006-12-18
Nearly every song on this CD is musically good to excellent. Most of these songs were hits. As a sampler of Elton's music, this collection is a very good start. However, this CD does have a few flaws. The principal flaw is that while the CD purports to be Elton John's greatest hits, it does miss quite a few hits. The missing songs that stood out most noticeably to me are "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "Pinball Wizard". However, there are other songs that were top 10 that were missed as well. It is impossible to represent Elton's greatest hits with only two CDs, and that is the main flaw of this collection.
The difficulty with most "greatest hits" collections is choosing the songs. Regardless of how good a job you do, there will be a fan who thinks a song was neglected. Conversely, there will be other fans that think a song on the collection should have been excluded. Rather than complain about what was or wasn't on this collection, the focus should be on this collection alone. At this time, this collection is the best single representation of Elton over the bulk of his career. For the songs that were missed from this collection, you can add "Rare Masters" and "Love Songs", which pick up a lot more of Elton's early career and fills in more of Elton's best.
Note that there are several versions of this collection. The U.S. version has "Levon" and "Blessed." This version replaces those songs with "Blue Eyes" and "Made in England." I like all four songs, but choices have to be made to keep this collection to two CD's.
With more than 40 albums, comprising hundreds of songs, choosing the 34 best is an absolutely terrible job. Similar to those people who would have added other songs, or subtracted some of those included, I too would have done something similar. However, we would never have agreed on the best. So take this CD as the best collection available to sample Elton's career. From that viewpoint, this CD rates 5 stars. Then you can add the other CDs I mentioned, and in the case of the classic albums and a few others, add original albums as well. We live in an imperfect world, thus a less than perfect collection of Elton's career is better than not having this collection at all.

While this particular disc is out of print, is has been pretty much replaced by "Elton John - Greatest Hits 1976-86" once MCA resigned him. If you're looking for these tunes, you can find most of them there.
THE ELTON JOHN LEGACY CONTINUES ON FURTHER WITH HIS GREATEST HITS VOLUME III. PART 3 OF 3........2007-05-03
ELTON JOHN has successfully and consistantly continued in releasing great albums and performing before sell-out audiences the world over up to this very day. I recently reviewed the previous two volume albums of "ELTON JOHN'S GREATEST HITS" highlighting the many great hit songs that the legendary singer sang from his first two 1969-1976 phase period's. "ELTON JOHN'S GREATEST HITS VOLUME III 1979-1987" picks up right where volume II left off and continues on with the brilliant hit songs that the legendary singer recorded and would forever be known and renowned for during his third 1979-1987 phase period. In my opinion, "ELTON JOHN'S GREATEST HITS VOLUME III 1979-1987" is another true testament of the pure genius and musical creativity of an extremely talented individual. "ELTON JOHN'S GREATEST HITS VOLUME III 1979-1987" is also a fine fitting tribute to a masterminded artist that was truly indeed, far ahead of his time. These three volume albums stand as ELTON JOHN'S finest ultimate masterpieces, contributions, accomplishments and achievements in Rock n' Roll history.
It is now time to let the music of ELTON JOHN to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking. The legendary "ELTON JOHN'S GREATEST HITS VOLUME III 1979-1987" begins with the fantastic mild anthem "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues," the powerful heartfelt mellow Rocker "Mama Can't Buy You Love," the beautifully slow acoustic Rocker "Little Jeannie," the incredible sounding acoustic Rocker "Sad Songs (Say So much)," the amazing inspiring anthem "I'm Still Standing," the beautifully slow heartfelt song "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)," the fast paced synthesized Rocker "Heartache All Over The World," the beautifully well arranged synthesized Rocker "Too Low For Zero," the breathtaking synthesized mild hard Rocker "Kiss The Bride," the beautifully slow and well sung song "Blue Eyes," the groundbreaking synthesized Rocker "Nikita" and the soulful synthesized mild Rocker "Wrap Her Up." Like Elton's previous two volume albums, may I also add that Elton was definitely sizzlin' and burning hot when he laid down the tracks for all of his legendary hit songs. Elton just can't seem to do any wrong.
Overall, this is another great compilation album that is worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard ELTON JOHN fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of ELTON JOHN, I would highly suggest that you purchase the first two volumes of "ELTON JOHN'S GREATEST HITS" before you purchase this third volume. All of Elton's songs tell a story by their sequence and the year they were recorded. However, you might want to reconsider researching further into some the many other greatest hits compilation albums that are available on Amazon com. Doing this, you will find the right compilation album(s) that is right for your musical needs and tastes. Either way you choose, you will have taking a giant step into owning and starting your very own ELTON JOHN music collection. You can do all of your researching and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. When you get a chance, buy this album. You'll be happy and satisfied that you did.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary treasure album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. With this in mind, I still figure that ELTON JOHN still has many more great albums left in him that are filled with many great hit songs to release in the many years to come. I guess it is safe to say that ELTON JOHN is here to stay and isn't going anywhere soon. ELTON JOHN has forever left his place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten even if he tried. So here's to you Elton.
