5 out of 5 stars A great CD for people who think, understand irony, and have a sense of humor.......2007-02-11

Creating a short list of all of Randy Newman's "Best Hits" is next to impossible because like any "Best Hits" album it is so subjective and narrow...especially with musicians, like Newman, who have had long-lasting, impactful careers over several decades. However, I felt this compilation is a great choice of some incredible songs.

"Political Science" (An appropriate song for our modern times), "Rednecks", "Sail Away", and "Little People" are sarcastic, hilarious and ironic. They are sung from a bigotted and racist point of view. He provides the listener an opportunity to see how illogical, irrational and dimwitted warmongers and racists truly are...while being funny.

He expresses some pretty deep, touching feelings in "Marie" which is told from the perspective of a man who can only expess his true feelings to a past love when he is drunk. "Feels Like Home" is an incredibly beautiful song that makes me think of my wife each time I hear it...while "You've Got a Friend in Me" from the movie "Toy Story" has a poignant, tender and sincere message that reminds me of my daughter every time.

"Mama Told Me Not To Come" (Made famous by Three Dog Night), "You Can Leave Your Hat On", "Little Criminals", "It's Money That I Love", and "Happy Ending" all have a bluesy feel and are raunchy and fun.

"I Love L.A." is frequently played at Dodger Stadium and makes me want to see a game in L.A. everytime I hear it.

5 out of 5 stars RANDY NEWMAN.......2006-07-06

I WAS LOOKING FOR THE "MONK" LYRICS, AND DIDN'T REALIZE THAT RANDY NEWMAN WAS THE SAME ARTIST WHO WROTE "SHORT PEOPLE". IT WAS A VERY PLEASANT SURPRISE. I'VE READ OTHER REVIEWS OF THIS ALBUM, AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT PEOPLE NEED TO LIGHTEN UP AND HAVE SOME FUN. MR.NEWMAN WRITES SATIRE. TAKE IT IN THE SPIRIT IN WHICH IT IS WRITTEN AND ENJOY.

A RANDY NEWMAN FAN

P.S. WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAVE TO BE POLITICALLY CORRECT??

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Randy Newman-Poetic Lyricist as Musical Prodigy.......2006-06-08

When I hear that line about "broken windows, empty hallways, pale-dead moon and a sky streaked with grey, I think of Randy Newman as being sometimes underated in the music business but regarded as a unique specimen of the artist whose highly unusual and endearing talents especially are significant to his legions of fans. There are three compositions that Randy performs on this CD that could sell the CD if they were actually by themselves. First is "I Think It's Going To Rain Today" which is soft rock's answer to something like the poetic value of Dylan's Positively 4th Street, and Short People which clearly represents the satirical and highly irreverent qualities that Randy also exhibits in "I Love LA". The latter is accompanied on MTV with what I believe to be one of the most gonzo and in your face videos I have ever seen, alluding to the underbelly and seedier side of a big city that the right coasters have always considered to be Nirvana.Randy Newman is more than just a spectacled and classy middle age singer song writer who sits at a piano in smaller venues and does the best he can to entertain. Specifically, he's a genius who weaves poetry and angst and satire and even sometimes vindictiveness to his music. Ventura Boulevard-We love it! Buy this CD, you definitely will love it too.

5 out of 5 stars It is really a cd.......2005-12-28

This is just a correction to the guy who said this cd could not be played on any cd-rom, or converted to MP3; he must not know how to use his computer. I just recieved this for x-mas, and it plays in my computer, and I saved it as an MP3. As far as the music goes, it's Randy Newman's greatest hits, if you like Randy Newman, you'll like this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Too Bad There Are So Many Used Copies Up For Sale.......2005-10-31

Well, just like Newman,an under-rated songwriter who never got the recognition he deserves so too a fickle buying music public not recognizing the artist Newman.
Cynical, coy, satirical, political, sentimental writing and music at it's best...in this voice of tin pan alley whimsy.
This CD is a great overview and play of the man's music and as all seem to agree the place to start...heartfelt authentic singer songwriters are a rare bird these days especially Newman's type because he is so hard to categorize..what was both his strength and a weakness...I hope he is happy and comfortable..

5 out of 5 stars Sounds GREAT..........2006-11-16

I am going to review many Time-Life items that I have purchased over the years - Sounds of the 70's, Sounds of the 70's (Take Two), Legends of Rock & Roll, numerous 60's CDs & 50's CDs. The recordings are excellent and I know all the tunes - most have at least 18 songs. I would recommend any of Time-Life's compilations to anyone, who is looking for a great CD with alot of songs, we all know. The only complaint I have is that the CDs should have been maximized on the 50's & 60's selections. All in all, a very good purchase...

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A great CD for those who appreciate movie themes.......2000-10-06

I enjoyed this CD because Leonard Martin does a good job in selecting the scores of movies that are special in itself, outside from the context of the movie. His selection is diverse, in the sense that it includes scores of not only the big blockbusters of the 90s (Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart), but also of the movies that have already been forgotten (Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, and The Rainmaker). There is reasoning behind such a selection, according to Martin: "Some scores wear well over time and provide a rewarding experience long after the movie begins to recede in one's memory."

Martin selects the scores from a variety of film genres (drama, dark comedy, suspense, for example) which translates into a well rounded compilation of musical pieces (classical,spanish-inspired, blues, etc). He also includes liner notes reagrding each selection and composer, which serves as a brief, yet interesting, background regarding each selection.

The only qualm that I have with the CD is the abscence of some of my personal favorites, which are certainly memorable both as films and as scores. Reagarding such statements Martin states that "Lists, of course, are highly arbitrary and designed to provoke argument." Moreover, Martin acknowledges that selections are not the only great scores of the past decade; they are, however, among his favorites. I definitely agree with him on this statement.

Purchase the CD for not only your favorites but for the nice variety that Martin put together. You will be surprised that you will love the scores, even of the movies you may not have seen!
