Any good singer can interpret a song, but it takes a stylist to make it his own. James Taylor is a stylist. This 20-track anthology obviously can't chronicle much more than the hits and high points of Taylor's career, but it nonetheless captures the artistic essence of a performer who's become a virtual synonym for "singer-songwriter" since his emergence in the late '60s. A lot of ink has been spilled ruminating about Taylor's role in soothing a '60s-burned generation, but given his own well-known demons (depression, addiction) his gentle voice often sounds like the physician wisely healing himself. His muse seems fully formed from the opening "Something in the Way She Moves," a track cut for the Beatles' Apple label in late ‘68 (and one that seems to share some symbiotic relationship with George Harrison's own classic "Something" from the period), its tone at once familiar and inviting--if ripe for a few decades of parody--as it wends its way from his seminal early '70s hits through a slate of later originals, R&B ("How Sweet It Is," "Handy Man") and pop ("Up On the Roof") covers. Tellingly, he delivers those chestnuts with an offhand confidence and illumination that makes them his own, a sense that informs even his jazz and Brazilian ("Only a Dream a Rio") flirtations. The set's newly recorded bonus cut, John Sheldon's "Bittersweet," is a pleasant pop confection that showcases Taylor's knack for being laconic and upbeat in the same breath. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Best of James Taylor.......2007-01-16

All the best of James Taylor - just like it says. I'm in love!

5 out of 5 stars Mellow and cheerful holiday songs........2007-01-09

James Taylor's voice is as amazing and as enjoyable as ever. Hard to believe that one can enjoy this album as much as one did 35 years ago in college. This guy is timeless and even my own college kids now enjoy his music.

5 out of 5 stars James Taylor Will Always Be . . . "Sweet Baby James".......2006-12-01

"These songs come from a dozen different albums, recorded over a 35-year stretch. I never thought they'd be collected like this; I never thought much at all beyond one tune at a time `till you've got an album's worth. Then in you go, and out they come, so you can begin again." ~ James Taylor ~

Last night, November 29, 2006, I watched the PBS television special presentation of a concert tribute to an exceptional singer/songwriter/guitarist and one of my all-time favorite musicians, James Taylor, honoring him as the 2006 MusiCares "Person of the Year." My deepest congratulations to Mr. Taylor for a well-deserved recognition.

It was a very enjoyable show and he was honored by some of the renowned contemporary singers of today namely: Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Dixie Chicks, Keith Urban, Sheryl Crow and Carole King, among others. Each of them marvelously rendered a James Taylor song to the enjoyment of the audience and home viewers as well. I especially like the performance of Carole King singing "You've Got A Friend" while playing the piano and JT joined her in the middle of the performance for a much-applauded duet. Another moving moment is the finale "How Sweet It Is to Be Loved by You, which JT described as the song that "summed up his feelings for that night." He was backed by his brother, Livingston, while his cute twin young sons joined them on stage dancing and jumping. JT re-appeared for an encore and he sung one of his hit songs, "Fire And Rain." After watching the show, I was so touched and it prompted me to pull this CD out from my collection and listened to it before turning in to bed. It also moved me to write a review on this CD, which was being offered by PBS together with the DVD of the show as pledge gift with a donation of $150.00.

Flashback: I became a fan of Sweet Baby James when I first heard "You've Got A Friend" and was totally hooked with his music and ever since I've been a faithful fan. Some of my very favorites are compiled in this collectible album such as "Sweet Baby James," "Don't Let Me Be Lonely," "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You," "Fire And Rain," "Long Ago And Far Away," "Up On The Roof," "Shower The People," "Your Smiling Face" and "You've Got A Friend."

This CD is a collector's item and very essential to any Sweet Baby James fan. You'll take pleasure in listening to some of his biggest hits of all-time, which are all self-penned. He is joined by a great line-up of musicians and guest singers, who are all his long-time collaborators during the three decades of his musical career, the likes of Carole King, Joni Mitchell, David Sanborn, Michael Brecker and Ralph McDonald, to mention a few.

"Surprising how casual it all was. Mostly, we were just amusing ourselves, with little concern for how the thing would be received in the great world. It was lucky that some of you liked some of it enough to listen. Enough to allow it to continue. Don't think I'm not grateful." ~ James Taylor ~

Yes, I'm one of the myriad of fans who loved all of his recordings, enough to listen to it and enough to allow the recordings to continue. And I just wish he will continue recording for as long as he can - standards, maybe. Why not? I've truly enjoyed his renditions of "My Romance," "The Way You Look Tonight" and "The Nearness of You." And he delivers so well. An album of standards coming soon? ;)

4 out of 5 stars Get this if you must..........2002-10-16

...but it would be better if you got the original double-CD Live. Having seen JT live a number of times, I can say that the performances they managed to record during the course of this tour are some of the better ones he's done.

Still, if you get this one, you're only getting his biggest hits, and you probably have all those already. Have you heard Millworker? Shed a Little Light? New Hymn?? I thought not. This one's good, but the double-CD Live is better.

4 out of 5 stars Go For The Complete "Live" Double-CD.......2000-06-27

The only reason I don't give this one 5 stars is because it's an edited version of the complete "Live" double-cd, which has more than twice the number of songs. You'll miss out on some great material if you settle for this version.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best performers in his best performance...!!.......1998-09-08

I am a music teacher of 23 years. I have always been fond of James Taylor and his style. After listening to this CD I have an even greater respect for his stylings, He breathes new and fresh life into the old hits. I am continually amazed at his ability to capture the emotional, political and social climate of the times with his music and lyrics. You will experience it all..loneliness, joy, nostalgia, irony...blues, jazz, rock'n'roll, country, and Arnold McCuller. I've watched a lot of collections come and go. This one is definitely a "KEEPER". JT, I thank you. ND

5 out of 5 stars One of the best live albums available.......1998-06-12

As James Taylor does in concert, he re-energizes his hits into new, exciting and still familiar tunes. A must have for any JT fan. The best album in his arsenal.

5 out of 5 stars Hymns in the Anglican Tradition Beautifully Performed.......2007-01-24

This is one more example of hymns in the Anglican Tradition, sung by the always excellent choir of King's College, Cambridge. It is a splendid example of the sonorous sound of men and boys, accompanied by a classic English organ and, for the quieter hymns, the gentle sound of harp. All the familiar hymns and hymn tunes are here. You will not regret adding this CD to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring music.......2005-07-06

I always enjoy listening to this Cd and particularly because of the orchestra and mellifluous choir. I especially enjoy: A Mighty Fortress, Come Down, O Love Divine, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, and Thine Be The Glory. Some of the selections are soft such as "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears." Still, it is a fabulous selection and one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Great English Hymns.......2005-02-10

This was one of my Christmas gifts and I really looked forward to listening to it. I had just visited King's College, Cambridge back in August and really liked it--you should try to make it out there if possible.

Anyway, this CD was great to listen to. Some hymns are scored for orchestral accompaniment, choir and organ, while the majority of tracks are just for choir and organ.

Recorded in the King's College Chapel (the front cover has a great shot of the ceiling's trademark "fan" stone carving), the hymns are pure English sound--boys' treble voices along with men's changed voices singing with a pure, clean, straight tone. It's very sweet-sounding.

The hymns chosen are also great; "Be Thou My Vision," an Irish classic, appears along with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," and "Morning Has Broken" (later recorded by Cat Stevens).

The singing isn't especially elaborate--they're just simple hymns. They're orchestrated very well, however, and they sound great.

Religious people may prefer these recordings more in general--these are Christian hymns after all--but I think it's a great recording and is worth listening too, especially if you enjoy that English sound!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!.......2004-09-20

Having heard Kings College Choir twice, in the flesh, at Kings, this CD is a wonderful example of what you might hear. If you can't make it to Cambridge, buy this CD. It contains many of the old favorites and also some hymns that are not found on other English hymn CD's.

3 out of 5 stars English Choirs.......2002-12-18

Having visited many Cathedrals throughout the UK and listened to the enchanting voices of the boys choirs, I was disappointed with this particular rendering from Kings. Perhaps I am biased in that I enjoy the organ background or no background but the use of a full blown orchestra, in my opinion, tended to overwhelm and was totally unnecessary and somewhat grandoise choice on the part of Stephen Cleobury. Apart from that, much of the music was excellent. In comparison with other CD's from Kings, this was disappointing.

This was mediocre and disappointing as a "very best of" album. It was appealing before buying it in its array of song selections, but it turned out to have some of the otherwise best songs as live versions. If I had known that the sound quality was so low on these tracks, I never would have dreamed of buying this. JTQ is obviously not a good live band sound-wise in my opinion, or at least with the equipment used to record these live tracks. I also kind of forgot how much they overemphasize the organ/keyboard sound, which is too much even on their best songs really. In general they just don't compare to the other albums I bought at the same time, such as authentic original lounge acts, so maybe it wasn't fair to rate them at all. Still this is just not a good selection of songs considering the ultra-lame live tracks and mediocre studio ones.

4 out of 5 stars Hammond Over Dose.......2006-10-21

I am new to the music of James Taylor Quartet however a passionate about the particular keyboard Hammond sounds. Basically I follow all musicians that are still using the Hammond Keyboards.

If you are a Hammond addict like me you will love this album. Great tracks played with the Hammond effect everywhere. Actually all the tracks are filled and sometimes overfilled with the Hammond sound making this album for the hardcore Hammond lovers ONLY.

If you like the Hammond effect yet not with an over dose, I recommend:
"The bigger picture" for the same artist.
          "Second Wind" for Oblivion express.
          "The Collection" for Tony williams.

5 out of 5 stars A must HAVE JAZZ FUNK Anthem album.......2004-04-15

Starsky & Hutch Theme, Theme from Dirty Harry, Mission Impossible. The Album has from the outset got " Cool " "funky " and buy me I am cool & funky written all over it!! The feel of the first of the 2 CD's is spies; sports cars; gadgets & retro soundtracks !

This band have been doing their own thing around the world for well over 15years and this album is as the title suggests a bite size feast of their best moments. This album is worth getting just for the one track you may have heard of. This double CD covers myriad of music genres -Rock; Funk; Jazz ; Soul and then mashes them through a Hammond organ to produce a unique flavor of music that is live, raw & funkified. I think the music press probably came up with the term Acid Jazz AFTER listening to JTQ.

The big hits are all here, ones that are instantly recognisable even to a non JTQ fan, believe me. Track 1 - "Blow Up" a reworked version of Herbie Hancock's , " Bring down the birds " or to you & me the 90's hit " Groove is in the heart " has that " oh that's where I heard it " feel to it. Blow Up was the band's first released track back in 1987! Be prepared the pace is fast and furious especially CD 1.

The Big anthems for me that also bring out some of UK's finest musicians like saxophonist Steve Williamson on the track " Grooving Home ", Noel Mckoy on "Love the Life "and Alison Limerick on " Love will keep us together " .
Certainly CD 2 holds the maturity of the tracks with the more commercially successful tracks. These include the corker of a cover of Led Zeppelin's , "Whole Lotta Love"

The clever thing about this album is the choice of having the B sides of the Hits included, like the swinging "Down by the River" . All in all a great album that is packed to the teeth with music ( 35 tracks ) to impress your friends an ideal Cd for the Lounge bar and Jazz dancefloor alike. What are you waiting for! You are buying into History!!

Signed to Apple Records, James Taylor had already made a name for himself as a songwriter, placing two songs on Tom Rush's classic album The Circle Game ("Sunshine, Sunshine," "Something in the Way She Moves"). Both appear here on his debut album alongside "Carolina on My Mind" (which features Paul McCartney on bass). Taylor's thin, reedy voice complements the wispy, often overly sensitive songs and the production by Peter Asher is understated throughout--even if it does at times include a string quartet. Only "Knocking at the Zoo" attempts to upset the gentle balance. As a poster boy for mellow, he succeeds. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars The Debut Album: A Star Is Born.......2007-07-07

This first album by Mr. Taylor clearly demonstrates why so many people love both the music and the man. "Carolina On My Mind" is a song I could not give up when making a list of my all time favorite songs. The version on this album is a bit different from the later version most people will recognize; however, it is very enjoyable. I once read somewhere that Paul McCartney predicted it would be a very big hit, and he was correct. I love "Knocking Around the Zoo," too.

Mr. Taylor followed up his debut album with "Mudslide Slim and the Blue Horizon," a really terriffic album. I often listen to both of these albums, and I would recommend them to anyone who only knows, but likes, Mr. Taylor's most recognizable songs from the radio.

          5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2007-06-20

Its funny about JT. His voice just keeps getting better and better but the content never is what it was in the earlier days.
I have to second "Circle Round the Sun" being my favorite JT song ever and one of my top ten favorite songs period. I wish he would do it again, it is so lush and wondrous.

I am thrilled this CD is finally out as the apple album was the one you could never get and my tape of an aquaintances' has worn out.

I think his first is his best and that generally he went down from a very high mountain with each successive album. And the irony is his voice has gotten better. Guess now he has all the answers and I miss the young man who had all the questions.

3 out of 5 stars Il primo disco (forse) di JT - per l'etichetta APPLE.......2007-03-08

Un disco molto interessante sopratutto in relazione alla data di pubblicazione.
Contiene alcuni pezzi che verrano ripresi più avanti.
          I Beatles avevano visto bene.

4 out of 5 stars Still Worth Listening To.......2007-01-30

James Taylor was the first musician other than the Beatles to release an album on Apple records. It's easy to see why the Beatles saw talent in this guy. The songs on this album, while darker than the usual James Taylor, have depth and substance, and an emotional undercurrent running beneath them. Standards such as "Gone to Carolina" and "Something in the Way She Moves" are performed here with more passion and authenticity than when they were re-recorded for the "Greatest Hits" album. Occasionally the arrangements sound a little crude and outdated, but that is more than compensated by the sheer power of the music. All true James Taylor fans should have this album in their collection.

          5 out of 5 stars James Taylor's Sgt. Pepper.......2006-01-22

You can hear the direct influence from the Beatles here... the bizarre orchestral arrangements are nonetheless spectacular... it's a great album... sit back and enjoy as another reviewer has suggested, a great folk album!,
