From their late ‘70s origins, Echo & the Bunnymen were unfairly lumped in with goth-rockers simply because their music was kind of dark, the boys in the band wore black, and both their name and haircuts were ridiculous. But the group was successful because they wrote awesome, totally distinctive songs that transcended genre trendiness. Now, it's fabulous for their diehard acolytes that Echo & the Bunnymen are still around to make classic post-punk-y Britpop in their signature style, and it would be ridiculous to ask them to write a song like "Going Up" or "The Killing Moon." After all, they already have. But something even approaching that level would be nice, however the band is seeming lackluster and suffers from it. The opening lyrics "And I need it more than love/ And I love it more than life" fail to cut it and seem simply like movement through motions. Longtime fans will find a little comfort amongst their wishes for another vital recording. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Absolute brilliance and beauty..........2007-04-25

To not "date" myself too much, I'll simply say I've been around long enough to have seen Echo and the Bunnymen multiple times, particularly back when Pete was still with us. I remember the day distinctly when the news of his death via motorcycle broke on Mtv news, back when Mtv was actually decent. Prior to his untimely departure, I think one of the finest performances I ever witnessed was Echo, Gene Loves Jezebel and New Order, back when I lived in S.F. So amazing.

At any rate, on to this release....it's wonderful to see the boys still doing what they do so well. Amidst multiple reincarnations, Electrafixions, and even Echo and the Bunnymen with a different lead singer (Noel Burke, if anyone remembers him...that lp was not as bad as many suggest), the boys have returned to form and to greatness.

This release....well, it's beautiful. From start to finish, it simply is gorgeous. Harkens back to days of "Nothing Lasts Forever," "Candleland," "Bomber's Bay," etc., etc. Not quite where they were at "Ocean Rain" time...but, since when have they been? They have matured even more, and developed an even greater beauty than that which they previously held. I cannot recommend this release highly enough. It is simply stellar.

5 out of 5 stars Aging Wonderfully..........2007-02-01

Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant are about my age (48), and I think it's amazing that they're still putting out great albums, and touring. They've never sounded better; they have never phoned in an album. They still seem to enjoy what they're doing, and it shows. Another great album...this one "cold," vaguely suggesting danger (e.g., the photo of a door with VERBOTEN stenciled on it).

One of my resolutions is to see them the next time they play in my area. I saw them in 1987, and that concert was magical. If you think Ian's voice sounds great on the recordings, you should hear him live!

While Echo & The Bunnymen's albums aren't noted for humor (this one's particularly pretty intense - no "Baseball Bill" here), words to make you smile occasionally peek through in Ian's observations about himself and life. Will's humor shows on some of the guitar solos. Sure, he uses guitar effects and studio wizardry aplenty here, but ultimately he decides how to augment a song, and he plays many tasteful solos.

Hey Will, your playing is wonderfully creepy, and full of unexpected turns. For example, on "Scissors in the Sand" where for a few seconds you strum away with ALL effects removed. On the previous album, I really like the doodle (4 notes) you play on "King of Kings" just after Ian sings "Came alive in the dead of night..." That always gets me.

"Glad to be alive, at 45."

Yes, we're a little bit older, but still glad to be alive.

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars - An excellent beginning, sags at the last.......2007-01-18

There's something to be said for the EP format -- five songs, short and sweet, reduced price. There should be no shame in releasing an EP if you can't come up with an album-full of worthy material. Think of the great debut EP from the band Ivy (Lately) or the debut EP from Air (Premiers Symptomes) -- five star efforts with five great tracks each.

The best songs on Siberia can't be praised enough. They represent the best of pop music in this decade. After the fifth or sixth track, though, the music continues on, playing is strong, singing is strong, but the lyrics sound forced, the rhyming too-clever. So, the band ran out of things to say after five songs.

I am mightily impressed with this music, which is my first exposure to Echo and the Bunnymen. It's got melody, a great beat, I love the way the guitar lines counterpoint the vocals, and songs like Parthenon and Stormy Weather touch me with their maturity and self-awareness.

There is one other flaw with Siberia. The sound quality is very poor. The CD barely sounds any better than the MP3s of some of the tracks that I had before I bought the CD. Usually I expect the CD's higher inherent resolution to clarify the individual instruments and reveal more of the recording space. This just sounds like mud -- everything is compressed to the same volume level, the bass doesn't go very low, the highs don't go very high, and all the instruments and vocals mush together into one great mash of hash. In spite of this poor recording and/or mixing, the music itself shines through. I'm sure it would shine through more if greater care had been taken to preserve the original acoustic waveforms present in the studio at the time the record was made. Maybe the producer and the engineers need to be taken out and have their ears cleaned.

4 out of 5 stars are you the same as you were 25 years ago?.......2007-01-18

i jumped onto the bunnymen bandwagon quite late in life (2002), even though i was a teen during their glory days - crystal days? don't know why i never picked up a copy of "songs to learn and sing" at some trip to the record store during high school.

after gradually buying all of their studio albums (including "reverberation"), i can honestly say that "siberia" ranks among my favorites. in fact, i'm listening to it as i write. (actually, i could now deduct a half star if i could because "what if we are?" just started - utter crap.) coming from my perspective, this album seems much less self-important sounding than their early 80's stuff which, frankly, sort of sounds dated these days. "siberia" is more nuanced and subtle musically and lyrically. "crocodiles" and "porcupine" seem to just bash the listener over the head. i chalk it up to the brashness of youth. but don't get me wrong; i really do like those, too, but for different reasons and during different moods.

if you are one of those folks who seem to think that the first five years of an artist's career are all that matters, i can't pretend that you'll like this. if you enjoy listening to how artists change and develop over time, i think you'll really enjoy this.

and ignore the amazon.com official review. they got it all wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Purgatory up here.......2007-01-17

This, the fourth studio LP("What Are You Going to Do.." "Evergreen" "Flowers") in a series of their "comeback," sounds a lot like you'd expect: mature, brilliant, moody, but by no means a masterpiece like "Porcupine" or "Heaven Up Here" (or the incomparable "Ocean Rain.") Like other reviewers have noted, the uphill climb in age has taken some of the edge from these post-punk, bluesy rockers. Best track is the opener, "Stormy Weather," which, unfortunately, sets one up for disappointment considering some of the lack luster follow-up tracks. Still, like all Echo LPs, there's not a "bad" track on the LP, per se. Ian's voice just won't allow it--(just wish his lyrics would match the sweeping hook-ridden guitar riff atmosphere). Can't exactly put my finger on it--but something is missing. You get the feeling they were a bit uninspired, and you just know they can do better (e.g. "Evergreen"). Let's keep our fingers crossed for a tour. They are phenomenal live.

Not a complete album, but an excelent start for a band that knew nothing of almost a year ago.

This EP shows promise from an Aussie band that is a little bit of everything I like. They are a little bit Bowie, a little bit Daft Punk, a little bit New Order, and a lot of goodness for the ears and the feet.

When the Gypsies arrived in Russia in the late 1700s, their wild, extravagantly emotional music created an immediate sensation in the royal court, and from then on Gypsy music has been an integral part of Russian cultural life. The two-CD set, Russian Gypsy Soul, features the wide variety of musical styles played by Russian Gypsies, including the fiddling of Sergei Erdenko of Loyko, the choral singing of the Siberian Gypsies, and the guitar playing of Kolpakov, who uses a traditional Russian seven-string guitar. The Gypsies have a reputation for being a passionate people, and the emotional fire in selections like "Shuryaki," a rousing drinking song by Jelem, or "Yegorushka," a moving farewell lament from Ilo, shows that their reputation is well deserved. Many of the artists here have never been heard outside of Russia, but all of the musicians deliver performances of the highest caliber, and many of the instrumentalists play at the virtuoso level. Russian Gypsy Soul is an excellent introduction to a body of music that has been unheard outside of Russia for too long. --Michael Simmons

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Russian Soul Food.......2001-03-04

These two CDs present a sparkling selection of the kind of Gypsy music which has made such a profound impact on Russia's popular music for several centuries. There are eloquent examples here of the four major regional styles of Russian gypsy music, from the Far East though the Siberian nomads to the southern peoples of the Russian Empire. There are also occasional echoes from other countries, principally from Eastern Europe but ranging as far west as Ireland. Most striking to American jazz fans will be the clear genesis of Djanko Reinhardt's Hot Club of France with its characteristic virtuousic guitar and violin solos against a backgroud of insistent guitar rhythm, such as with the Loyko ensemble. Reinhardt, who has been called the first great European jazz musician, was a Belgian but intensely proud of his gypsy heritage. Larger groups of frentic singers and instrumentalists leave the listener with the feeling of taking part in one of the orgiastic scenes of revelry in the Brothers Karamazov. Some listeners may find the irrational exuberence of a few of the singers too much a a good thing but even such soloists convey an authentic oral picture of an enduring aspect of Mother Russia.

4 out of 5 stars Surfin' Eastern Europe - Party Style.......2004-12-08

I'm just not sure where the reality ends and the satire begins. The 1996 "Surfing in Siberia" may be a misnomer because after the title tune, which is actually an unaccredited "Miserlou", the surf dies and the Eastern European sentimentality begins with the exception of the surf rocker, "Love Pipe".

The band is talented and the music is quirky, tongue-in-cheek. From "Here I Am in Hollywood (want to be a star)" to the next tune, a paean to Siberia ("land of broken dreams") there is a maudlin aura that continues with "Don't Stop the Dance (You're dancing for me, I'm getting drunk)".

The recognizable tunes are Brahms' "Hungarian Dance #5", Chuck Berry's "Rock and Roll Music" (done better-much better- without the Eastern European riffs, by the Beach Boys 15 years previously) and the traditional Ukrainian Dance #13... a real Cossack number that will make you want to "get down" and do those Cossack moves.

"Jerry's Got the Squeeze Box" should include an apology to The Who on the title but it dissipates into a real old-fashioned polka. In the same vein, "Three Alley Cats" should give some attribution to the Stray Cats, at least for the inspiration. To be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about the album. It will bring a smile to your face and the band is more than competent. As I indicated, a lot of it is ironic if not pure caricature. It is, above all, good fun. "I want to rock and roll all night; I want to rock and roll so bad".

    5 out of 5 stars Great live.......1999-09-08

I heard Red Elvis for the first time yesterday at a live concert. They performed songs from many different albums, and I couldn't decide which one to write my review on. But this one has love pipe, and that one was my fave. I just ordered "Better than Sex". They have lots of fun performing, jumping around the stage and asking the audience to scream "love pipe" or whatever song it is that they're singing. Their guitar skills are unbelievable to watch. If listening to Red Elvises' recorded music is only half the fun of seeing it live, five feet away from the performers, I'm content.

5 out of 5 stars The best CD I've purchased in the last year........1998-11-24

I saw the Red Elvises live at The Swiss in Tacoma on November 17th and was hooked. Hard to tell who was having more fun, the band or the audience. I bet I've played this CD ten times in the last week. It's a mix of swing, rockabilly, Russian folk music and as they like to say, "kick @$$ Rock'n'roll.

    5 out of 5 stars Kick-a** Rock-n-Roll from Siberia!.......1998-10-09

I first heard the Red Elvises in the film "Six-String Samurai," and became instantly addicted. This album is the only one of theirs I own (so far), and as such has an almost permanent place in my stereo.

The Red Elvises blend the best elements of Surf rock, 50s Rock-n-roll, and Russian folk music to create a wonderfully twisted and toe-tapping sound! Their rendition of "Rock n' Roll Music" (by Chuck Berry) must be heard to be believed! Ditto their rearrangement of Brahms' "Hungarian Dance #5" -- a wonderful rock piece, now that they've gotten their hands on it. Zhenya Kolykhanov is a brilliant guitarist, Igor Yuzov has an amazing talent for writing wonderfully tongue-in-cheek lyrics, Avi Sills is a great rock drummer, and Oleg Bernov's base (the CD liner calls it a Base Guitar, but it looks like a giant balalika to me!) is the glue that holds it all together. Awesome!!!

5 out of 5 stars The first modern Diva.......2004-03-31

Maria Caniglia is often not given credit for the artists she inspired who would later record and perform her repertoire. Upon studying her recordings, I compared them to find out that not only Tebaldi, Mancini, and other Italian divas on record followed her lead, but even Milanov emulated her approach to dramatic declamation. The one soprano who emulated her in the extreme is Leontyne Price whose recording of La mamma morta is a carbon copy of La Caniglia's 1941 recording, and so is her first complete recording of La Forza. You only need listen to first 30 minutes to fully comprehend the depth of influence from Caniglia's version. Not surprisingly, La Price's approach to the high notes is exactly in the manner of Caniglia: light, high, and spinning.

Caniglia's influence is enormous and I find her dramatic approach absolutely supreme. The voice is interesting though; there are unsure pitches to be found throughout her range, but the voice is rich and creamy and at its best, quite beautiful. The velvet or corona of her voice never deserted and that is something quite special. Here was a unique woman, a soulful singer, and a daring prima donna.

    I recommend La Caniglia highly!

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing.......2003-08-21

Perhaps a few more words may be added to those of Madame Caniglia's distant cousin.

Maria Caniglia was the real thing, an honest-to-gosh, red-blooded, thrilling, Verdi-Puccini soprano who flourished in the 1930s and 40s. Her great contemporary was Zinka Milanov, who firmly reigned at the Met in New York while Madame Caniglia appears to have taken the famous line from Verdi's Attila to heart: "Take all the world but leave Italy to me."

She was the chosen partner with the tenor, Benjiamino Gigli, in magnificent complete recordings--Puccini's Tosca, Verdi's Requiem, Ballo in maschera, Aida and the non-Gigli Forza del destino, all available on CD--that easily hold their own against subsequent contenders. Though her partnership with Gigli was long and successful, both in the recording studio and on stage, there was one peculiarity in it, or so the story goes: Gigli would never speak a word to her. And Madame Caniglia never knew why.

La Caniglia was characterized by burning intensity as a singing actor in the let-it-all-hang-out school of the first half of the Twentieth Century. At her best, her voice had an exciting, full, lush sound, not to be found in our piping times. At her worst, her higher warblings were dramatic, if not overly beautiful or accurate. In the style of her time, she tended to be less caring about a composer's written notes than is common among the present generation of singers.

Unfortunately, I cannot carry a note. I'm sorry that my family never got to see her. You see, Maria and my grandmother were cousins. Maria could really hit the High C. Excellent, CD.

Especialmente notable es el poema sinfonico The Wind of Siberia.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage recordings revealing the art of a musical genius. An album well worth having........2005-11-03

The very beginning of Boris Tchaikovsky's Sevastopol Symphony (sometimes spelled Sebastopol) of 1980 cries in anguish: the feeling portrayed by the high octaved woodwinds. But, soon thereafter, the mood becomes reflective (as though one's watching the leaves falling gently from the trees though not at all dismissing the beauty left in the world). And it is the harp that paints that beauty and tranquillity. Yet, it is short-lived, and the troubled aspects of the work are laid out mingled with the some affirmation of hope. It is not a typical `from darkness to light' composition and to pinpoint the emotionalism and the message behind the work is up to the listener. But, analyzing this astonishing yet a complex work goes deeper than calling it ambiguous. It goes through several episodes and structural changes and as the composer states (in reading Pyotr Klimov's well informative booklet essay) the symphony has no chronology. The first ten minutes of the score goes through stages as though Tchaikovky is crystallizing what he's trying the say. But at 10'55", matters become clearer when the brightness of the mood becomes darker. The material becomes conflictive and something in dies irae in proportion at the climax @14'26". Yet, there is hope and that beauty and at 19'01" the flute and the supporting muted strings paint them well. It is a deep passage, the one where introversion sets in with senses of nostalgia and longing. But the work fights on and the mood again brightens, only more reverberantly and once that's threatened by the cries of the woodwinds and high tremolo strings, the reflective yet subtle looking-forwardness of the symphony ends it. It is no doubt a monumental composition as far as substance is concerned.

Tchaikovsky's Music for Orchestra (1987) is a continuous seven-movement piece and, like the Sebastopol Symphony, consists of contrasting episodes (the work is more like a suite in that regard). The Motive is curious because of its independence: it really does not paint the scope and the nature of the work as its title might suggest. But I really like the next movement `Far Road' with its inner-most cogitating self (reminds me of his symphonic poem Juvenile). There's something mockingly picturesque in `The Wires Sing' while the remaining four movements are appealingly characteristique in their own ways (especially the `Epilogue').

But turn to Tchaikovsky's "The Wind of Siberia" (1984) and you'll discover a masterpiece. The tone painting and orchestra are so stupendous that they would do Sir Arnold Bax proud (the author of among other great works, "Winter Legends"). I truly admire how he sets the stage of the symphonic poem, with the chilling tremolo of the strings that paints the region north and yet so distant and far removed from `civilization.' The composition is tripartite in structure with ensuing yet a very elaborate development section that paints the region to compelling results (and yet with some underlying warmth that makes the music not at all unfeeling). The tone painting and originality, however, remain awesome especially with the use of six kettledrums (@6'46"-ff). But the highlight of the work is how the coda culminates to an awesome climax beginning @13'19" before the piece ends with such a transcendental, almost angelic note. The piece (as do the others on this album) shows Boris Tchaikovsky at his most unrelentness in his creative spirits.

And there's nothing short of admiration of how Vladimir Fedoseyev and his orchestra proceed in conveying the musical art of an underrated yet recently re-discovered genius. Fedoseyev, who've worked with Boris Tchaikovsky for many years, performed the works with upmost conviction and flair and the relishment of his Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra (now named after Piotr Illych Tchaikovsky) is consistently excellent throughout their journey in bringing his music to the fore. Not only does Chandos deserves praise and gratitude for such an enterprising re-issue, but so does the Boris Tchaikovsky Society as well - the organization with a tireless mission to expose the music of an amazing creative mind to a wider audience. Admittedly, its work is far from over, but the efforts are paying off, as was the case of Eduard Tubin during the 1980s and beyond. The otherwise successful recording transfers of Chandos sound somewhat more distant and less impacting than the Melodiya originals. But the sounding is very good and clear nevertheless while the overall presentation is excellent and exemplary (and companies that re-issue recordings particularly of operas could and should learn from this example).

It's an album that ought not to be missed, for what's about to be uncovered is likely to force you to ask yourself, what have I've been missing. Fans of Sir Arnold Bax could relate to that as can I.

This is a fantastic CD! I wish I knew more about the details of these recordings, because I suspect that some of them have been gathered from unusual sources. Because of the sound quality, I wouldn't be surprised to find that Cole Porter's own rendition of Cest Magnifique was recorded at a party or other informal occasion. It has that kind of intimate feeling.

At any rate, don't be put off by the fact that some of the recordings don't have the polished, studio sound of modern recordings. It is absolutely incredible hearing these Cole Porter hits being done by such varied artists as Mel Torme, Bobby Short, Rosemary Clooney, Jo Stafford, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Marian McPartland (the wonderful jazz pianist).

You can't help but feel that you are experiencing history when you listen to this CD. I only wish that I had realized that all three volumes were available as a boxed set. Must buy that next! (ASIN: B00001T3IP).
