5 out of 5 stars Queen purists - listen again!.......2007-06-23

Reading some of the reviews on here, I remember my reaction when I first hesard of this collaboration - "WHAT?!" Granted, I am not a Queen fanatic; still, once I purchased and heard this disc, I was blown away! While Freddie had a very powerful and unique voice, so does Paul R. He brings a terrific, soulful & passionate quality to Queen's catalog. It seemed to me at one time that George Michael would be an excellent fit, but I KNOW that he has nowhere near the soul of Rodgers. May & Meadows-Taylor are obviously inspired by Rodgers, as he is by them - everyone's "game" is at their peak. This is worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars They are the Champions in my book!.......2007-03-10

I loved this CD and the DVD. Its a perfect blend of 2 styles that make each others music even better than it was.

I don't think anyone intended to try and replace Freddie during this match up, because they know you couldn't. These are all fine musicians who just want to play music. I think Paul Rodgers is a perfect new mate for this band, and I personally like it better than before. I've always been a fan of a deep, sexy rock-n-roll voice, and Paul is #1 when it comes to that. So I give this a 5 in my book and I have shown my friends the DVD and they all quickly became fans as well. Job WELL done guys! I can't wait for MORE!!!!

5 out of 5 stars An Essential for All Rock Fans-Love This-Get This!!! The "Peanut butter and Chocolate" Combo for True Rock Fans.......2007-03-06

Metaldiva keeps her ear to the road and when I first heard that this project was in the works I could hardly contain my excitement! This is like the "peanut butter and chocolate" combination of rock... both great alone but WOW together. Paul Rodgers (the front man of Free and Bad Company) and Queen (Freddie included)have remained friends and peers since the early seventies (earlier?)and this was a true labour of love. Paul, who has one of the best voices in rock history, joined with Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor for several select performances worldwide. In their appearance on "Hanging Out With" on VH1C they explained that they were not a "new" Queen, but mutually respecting artists with a love of performing. Each track, Bad Company or Queen, has the favorite feel but with a new twist. They make no pretense to try to imitate the classics, but honor them and add a new flavor. There is no confusing this with a "reunion" or "revival" tour. These hits are redone, revamped and loved anew with the original feel. Paul's soulful vocals, which have always had a melancholy celtic flavor combined with a sensual strength, add different color to the Queen hits. Brian and Roger add the Queen drive and signature guitar flavor to the Bad Company hits. All added together, it takes you back and moves you forward at the same time. This is just great music!!!
*Homage to Freddie and Perpetuation of Artistry*
The world loves Freddie Mercury and I wept openly when he died and still do when I see a clip or video of him even today over fifteen years later. It was a glorious era that ended tragically and prematurely. To this day "Who Wants to Live Forever" and "Love of My Life" tear me up.
When I saw Paul, Brian and Roger perform at the VH1 Rock Honors I became emotional because I respect and revere these gentlemen. They are the idols of most of the rockers today. Their combined effort is a tribute to Freddie, their music, and each other.
Metaldiva Sez: This is ESSENTIAL for every classic rock fan, and never disappoints from beginning to end. This is not a swan song, revival or revamp, but a different and totally enjoyable new way to love already revered artists. Get a copy of this CD and the DVD as well..

**PS Rumor has it they are considering a studio offering of all new material in the future..Go for it gentlemen!

3 out of 5 stars The Show Goes On?.......2007-01-17

It has been more than 15 years since the tragic death of Freddie Mercury, and many die hard rock fans have wondered how could Queen keep it up? Although they've conquered so much in the 70's and 80's, many have doubted that Queen's glory days could be turned into gold. No matter what the eras, no one really could replace freddie. Although they've performed heavily without a lead singer in Freddie's place, John Deacon, Roger Taylor and Brian May decided to give it a whirl with Paul Rogers from the group Bad Company. The big question is actually, can their show really go on with a new lead in Paul?

Return Of the Champions: Queen's 2006 live record, is a double album that tries to bring out a new generation of Queen fans all over. The double record includes so many great tracks recorded with Paul, as well the feeling of a grittier voice than Freddie. Although he tries well, the feeling just isn't the same. The album includes a lot of great tracks including Bohemian Rhapsody, The Show Must Go On, and a well-rendered voice on the sports anthem We Are The Champions. Although the record fairs well, I just honestly wish that more classic songs could've been performed like Bicycle Race, Killer Queen, and The Invisible Man to name a few.

All in all, Return Of The Champions isn't actually a definitive Queen record, but it is nice to actually see them out in the open as Rock royalty. If you're new to Queen's music, I really don't suggest you get this record, as much as you being a die hard fan, because so many aren't used to Paul. Hopefully, if they collaborate on something new, than maybe they'll hit the nail on the head.

1 out of 5 stars How was this allowed to happen?.......2006-12-19

When I first heard of this collaboration I could not help but wonder what these guys were thinking. How, how, how could these two separate styles of music be melded together to give the public something that it wanted to hear? After listening to this, I am still asking the same question. I am a big fan of these two entities (Queen and Bad Company) so I am not trying to bash either quality band, however, listening to this eclectic mix of blues and operetic styles is like drinking lemonade after brushing your teeth...uuuggh!
I still can not figure out why this abomination was deemed a good idea. It is obvious why John Deacon was not involved.
If Queen had really wanted to regroup with a new singer perhaps they could have persuaded George Michael to perform vocals. (I know, not a macho pick, but his style was perfect for Queen.) I will pretend this CD was never released and continue to listen to these artists as separate, distinguishable bands.
What next - The Cars regrouping with Todd Rundgren on vocals?

    Return of the Champions (2005.)

    INTRODUCTION:
One of the most crushing blows to the rock and roll world was the death of Queen's Freddie Mercury. When Mercury died, Queen disbanded, not wishing to go on without the man that made the group so successful. Over the years, though, the former members of the group had thought about touring again. None of these plans, though, ever truly came to be. That is, until, they considered a collaboration with Paul Rodgers, the legendary classic rock singer, best known for his work as lead vocalist of Bad Company. John Deacon apparently wasn't interested in this project, but despite that, Paul Rodgers, Brian May, and Roger Taylor joined forces and began touring. Read on for my review of the appropriately-titled live album, Return of the Champions.

    OVERVIEW:
-Return of the Champions was recorded May 9, 2005 at the Hallam FM Arena in Sheffield, England.
-The album, consisting of two CDs, was released on September 13, 2005.
-The group for this album consists of Paul Rodgers on vocals, Brian May on guitar, and Roger Taylor on drums.
-The backing musicians are Spike Edney on keyboards, Jamie Moses on guitar, and Danny Miranda on bass.

    REVIEW:
When I had heard that Queen had reunited with Paul Rodgers as their new vocalist, I was ecstatic. Queen was one of my favorite bands of all time, and Paul Rodgers was one of my favorite vocalists of all time. Having these musical powerhouses joining forces seemed like a sure-fire win-win situation. For months I waited for the live album the group would be releasing. I was counting down the days, eagerly anticipating its release. And then, it arrived. I popped the discs in my CD player, and quickly discovered that my predictions were true - this was a rock and roll MASTERPIECE. Paul Rodgers and the former Queen members had kind of faded into obscurity in the nineties, and it's great to see these musical geniuses finally get a much needed revival in their popularity. The first thing you'll notice on this recording is that their music-making abilities have NOT diminished - not in the least. Paul Rodgers sounds every bit as good as he did in the seventies. Brian May's guitar skills sure as hell are as good as ever, and Roger Taylor still plays percussion like no other. The backing musicians must also be given some credit - despite being unknown in the music industry, Spike Edney, Jamie Moses, and Danny Miranda all do their jobs excellently. The tracklist itself is also solid. Obviously, the vast majority of the album is devoted to the band performing Queen classics from the band's seventies and eighties heyday, but Paul Rodgers brings some of the songs from various phases of his career into the picture as well. The performance itself is AMAZING. Every song sounds great, and it's nice to hear a new spin on these classic tunes with Rodgers doing the vocals. Many of these songs sound better with Rodgers singing than the old Freddie Mercury versions did (I know I might take kind of a backlash from Mercury loyalists for that remark, but I don't care!) I do have a few minor complaints with the album, but they are such small complaints that they aren't even worth mentioning here. This is, hands down, the top album of 2005. Why can't people make music like this anymore?

    EDITION NOTES:
This album was released not long ago (at the time I write this review), so availability should be no issue if you want to purchase it. I was dissatisfied with the packaging, though - rather than a jewel case, the band did one of those cardboard packaging jobs. Because of the way it is constructed, the liner notes can fall out rather easily. Take my advice - get the album at Best Buy, because you get an exclusive DVD if you buy the album there.

    OVERALL:
Everything I can say about this album has been said. If you want a rock and roll masterpiece the world hasn't seen the likes of in many years, Return of the Champions is just what you need. Whether you're a fan of Paul Rodgers, Queen, classic-style rock in general, or any or all of the aforementioned factions, BUY THIS ALBUM. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. I give the album both my highest recommendation, as well as my pick for 2005's album of the year. Five stars all the way. Well, what are you waiting for? Buy it NOW!

You get some really impressive British and American TV themes here. Who ever thought you would get Ron Grainer's theme for MAN IN A SUITCASE or Edwin Astley's THE BARON on a CD? Astonishingly they are here with such classic TV themes as John Barry's THE PERSUADERS, Dimitri Tiomkin's RAWHIDE, Edwin Astley's THE SAINT and Laurie Johnson's THE AVENGERS. You also get some very good obscurities as Edwin Astley's DEPARTMENT S and Brian Dee's RETURN OF THE SAINT. There are many more.
