To mark the 10-year anniversary of the 30 million-selling Jagged Little Pill, Alanis Morissette decided to release an acoustic version of the very same 13 songs. A little more sung than screamed, Jagged Little Pill Acoustic is certainly less edgy than the original, but then again, so is Alanis herself. Now a 30-something Grammy-winner, she has far less to be angst-y about. The disc opens with one of its highlights, a slightly East Indian-tinged "All I Really Want" which includes a more controlled vocal than the original, backed by Arabic-influenced instrumentation. The new take is most charming, as is "Right Through You" which proves to be another case of improving on the original. Morissette's vocals soar through the chorus, now swooping over a host of (once again) Eastern-influenced strings. The vitriolic "You Oughtta Know"--perhaps the most rockin' track on the original CD--is now more contemplative in it's pace and sensibility, as is "You Learn"'s new mellower melody.

So there are moments of beauty, but also some of the same old, same old. Why, then, does one need this disc? For die-hard fans, the curio factor is reason enough. Marginal Alanis fans, those who found the original too screechy, will get the chance to hear the songs toned-down. Those looking for something different, however, should be aware that this is the entire Jagged disc, start to finish. For a woman who once used lyrics to shock listeners, there's nothing terribly shocking about this new CD. Isn't it ironic? --Denise Sheppard

4 out of 5 stars The Lighter side of JLP.......2007-05-03

At first I was surprised she revisited this album. Why? is right! Why fix something that clearly isn't broken. When I look back on the original JLP, it reminds me of my earlier years. It seriously was something I grew up on. The mid 90's were a time when everyone was pissed off, and Alanis just summed it up with her words, and I was right there with her (well behind her. I mean I bought the CD.)

I actually enjoyed this new compilation. It was surprising. It was a new approach towards these songs. Almost a softer, lighter version to them. Which if you are a fan like I am, that statment alone would piss me off! BUT she pulls it off. I think Alanis did this to show that she is in a new place now. And to be frank, I am too since '96. She seems to be more happier in these new verisons, and it feels refreshing to hear. Maybe this new album is a reflection of her personal evolution. To me it was like looking up an old friend, and finding out she was doing a lot better. I know that sounds weird, but whatever. It is worth the time if you are a fan. If you haven't heard the original, do that first, then come back to the acoustic.

5 out of 5 stars Good cd.......2007-02-07

VERY interresting Cd. I might have gotten the wrong one, because my cover looked nothing like that. Non-the-less, it had songs on it that weren't on the Jagged Little Pill cd, but some that were. And Alanis' voice live, in concert, or acoustic, is so different then her cd voice. She changes up the songs a little it's really interresting. I would reccomend this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Worth The Money.......2007-01-05

Some are saying there's no use in buying this album if you already have the studio album. I strongly disagree. This album is worthwhile to have. Not only do the songs sound refreshing after many years of the studio versions, but I think the acoustic is more beautiful and shows Alanis' more mature vocals after all these years.

I know many will hate me for saying this, but I actually prefer the acoustic over the studio album. I just love what she has done with the songs on here, and actually prefer many of the tracks acoustic over the studio ones. Like All I Really Want, Perfect and Mary Jane I much prefer on this album and actually enjoy more than I did on the original. Don't get me wrong, I still have many tracks from the original I love, but to say there is no use in buying this album is insane to me. It's an excellent album any Alanis fan needs.

4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Commemoration.......2006-12-03

I give Alanis kudos just by virtue that she had decided to record the songs that made her famous in an entirely new light. 1995's Jagged Little Pill became the best-selling album of the 90's, not to the mention one of the best recordings in music history. This sort of updated version of the album naturally sounds a little softer, but this softer side showcases how Alanis' voice has matured since ten years ago. An acoustic side suits Alanis just fine, and enjoying the gentle tones of these songs won't take away your love for the original recordings, even with "Ironic," where Alanis changes a line by singing, "It's meeting the man of my dreams and then meeting his beautiful husband," instead of his wife. Other highlights on this release are "Perfect," "Hand in my Pocket," "Right Through You," and the album's two best tracks, "Not the Doctor," and "All I Really Want."

5 out of 5 stars Alanis all grown up..........2006-07-27

Simply one of the best albums EVER...I loved it when I was young adult in my early 20's, still a bit "angry" at my own adolescence, and I love it even more now, if such thing is possible. It's amazing to see just how much this album reflects how our generation has grown. She managed to give these songs a whole new image, but deep inside, it's still the same.

Marking the 10th anniversary of Alanis Morissette¿s critically acclaimed Jagged Little Pill, the GRAMMY®-winning artist has recorded a start-to-finish acoustic version of the album. It¿s striking to hear how Morissette approaches these raging songs from her youth now that¿s she¿s been on the scene for a decade. Suffice to say, these tunes may be unplugged, but they¿re still electric. 1. All I Really Want 2. You Oughta Know 3. Perfect 4. Hand In My Pocket 5. Right Through You 6. Forgiven 7. You Learn 8. 1 out of 5 stars Shows no artistic growth - Jenny One-Note.......2007-04-28

Alanis Morrissette's original "Jagged Little Pill" was one of the biggest-selling debut albums of all time, and paved the way for a generation of self-absorbed and whiney brat rockers (Avril Lavigne comes to mind). "You Oughta' Know" is still one of the greatest exclamations of rage by a scorned woman, but the acoustic version on this album doesn't have the emotional weight of the original. Actually, she should have sung it accapella, as she had done in concert (most famously at the Kennedy Center with President Bill Clinton in the audience). Listening to "Ironic" reminds me that Morrissette misunderstands the meaning of the word. Overall, though, this album is a sad indication that Morrissette has not grown artistically in 10 years, and somehow has to rehash her best-selling debut album to rescuscitate her spiraling career.

4 out of 5 stars nice.......2006-06-22

I simply cannot get over "you oughta know". I heard the non-acustic virsion before this one,(well, duh!) and i fell in love with it.The acoutsic virsion is just as great.Other songs like
"perfect" and "mary jane" where the same way.I really suggest this album, becuse some of these new virsions are a bit more
"glossy" than the origanal.

5 out of 5 stars Alanis is a Musical Picasso.......2006-03-03

This CD is wonderful. Alanis makes music unapologetically and in absolutely her own way, not unlike the status-quo-shattering mavericks of the visual art world. The acoustic renditions of the JLP songs are well done, and the surprise bonus track (Forgive Me Love) appears after a minute of silence following the last song in the graceful manner of an encore to an intimate concert. Its own little opera, that last song never fails to amaze and thrill - I can listen to it over and over again. Want to learn how to appreciate a song, or, better, how to sing one with feeling? Listen to "Forgive Me Love."

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-02-27

I used to work at Starbucks, and I've heard this CD enough. It is definitely a must-buy for anyone who enjoyed the original CD. The lyrics and the music is the same, but the pacing and style is very different, adding to the entire effect. She still does the crazy things with her voice which make her so unique, but the CD is honestly her with more grace and polish.

1 out of 5 stars Make it STOP!!!!!.......2006-02-15

Like a bad recurring nightmare, here she comes again, screeching and howling her way through this set of self-obsessed, navel-gazing songs that attack the ears like a blast of pins. Owch! Forced to do some 'remote officing' at a internet hotspot at the local Starbucks this week, I am beaten into a pulp by this grating CD which is on a non-stop loop. The perfect spot for it actually, a crass, corporate slice of muzak - shows that she has no artistic integrity left - but must hop up and down on the same spot she wore out years ago. Tragic.
