Frontman Dan Marsala has gone on record saying that Story of the Year's near-platinum 2003 debut, Page Avenue--produced by Goldfinger's John Feldmann--didn't properly represent the band or its full throttle live show. The St. Louis screamo group aims to remedy that with this follow-up, co-produced by Steve Evetts, whose past clients include the convincingly heavy Hatebreed and Dillinger Escape Plan. To the casual fan, the difference might sound negligible. The guitars are a little louder and there's more of a chugga-chugga thing going on, but the lyrics still wrestle with oppression and much of the pop sheen of the first album still shines through on tracks like "Take Me Back" and "We Don't Care Anymore." --Aidin Vaziri
Product Description
After a near-platinum debut album and near-constant touring (517 shows, 540 days, 1.5 million fans), Story of the Year returns with the band's studio follow-up to Page Avenue. Heavier and more guitar-driven than Page Avenue, In the Wake of Determination, co-produced by Steve Evetts (Hatebreed, Cure, Saves the Day), delivers headline-grabbing energy and edge that is 2005's Story of the Year.

A near miss.......2006-10-09
The tracks slope up and down between soft interludes and blazing heavy bangers, so within the confines of what's already a stereotypically defined genre of Pop-Rock-meets-Post-Hardcore there is enough variety in this album to satisfy most people.
Personally, my problem with this release is the sequence of tracks. I didn't feel pulled along by the course the album takes, or rather there doesn't really seem to be any course. It opens, predictably, with the first single - and one of the band's most formulaic and uninspired tracks - We Don't Care Anymore, and from there proceeds to bang along with one vaguely themed thrasher after another. The first album wasn't the most introspective of rock albums, but the lyrics seemed more emotionally charged and there was an honesty that isn't present on songs like "Stereo" and "Our Time is Now."
There are a few major strengths on the album, in some subtle but very elegant chords on the smooth hummer, "Sleep," and the climactic finale, " 'Is This My Fate,' He Asked Them."
Again, for fans of the band, the album's a solid buy with a few essential additions to your musical collection, but as a piece it falls short of the premature expectations set by Page Avenue.

They went from suckin' to rockin'........2006-07-16
Overall, this is a major improvement over their last album, which pretty much sucks. Definately buy this...and not Page Avenue!
