If a band releases a pair of the most brilliant slabs of Revolver-cum-Fifth Dimension power pop in successive years, and no one is around to hear them, do they make a sound? If the answer were yes, perhaps this record--marketed as Big Star’s "first studio album in 30 years"--would be receiving more fanfare. Unfortunately, both #1 Record (1972) and Radio City (1973)--subsequently reissued together on one disc--went virtually undetectable, save for the hundreds of bands who cite them as influences and the thousands of fans who discovered them long after the Memphis band had disintegrated. Starring two of the four original members (including the unpredictable Alex Chilton) with two members of the Posies in tow, In Space is far from a Big Star record, though it does feature some of Chilton’s most catchy work in 15 years: "February’s Quiet" mimics Matthew Sweet, "Mine Exclusively" comes straight out of Stax, and "Best Chance We’ve Ever Had" is as close to the original band as we’re going to get. If you’ve been waiting patiently for this one, it will fit in your collection. But if you’re starting from scratch, go back three decades and catch up. --Scott Holter

4 out of 5 stars a space in time.......2007-06-10

The best album by Ten years after. It brings back all the memories from late 60's/early 70's.

5 out of 5 stars A Space in Time - Ten Years After.......2007-01-12

This is, in my opinion, one of their best albums. Timeless. After all these years still 100% enjoyable!

5 out of 5 stars Still Growing On Me.......2007-01-04

I was never a huge Ten Years After fan but I did listen to them somewhat regularly "back in the day," as my kids like to say. I had this album and Cricklewood Green in vinyl plus a few cuts on the Woodstock Album.
Now my son is learning to play the guitar so I thought I'd introduce him to some "good guitar" in the form of Alvin Lee. He's not impressed with most of what I listen to but he does like this a bit.
I must say that I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I do. The more I listen to it the more it grows on me. Almost every song on this album has staying power. If you like TYA at all this is a great album overall and worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2006-11-27

What I like about this album is that it covers a wide range of emotions and feelings. Lead guitarist Alvin Lee was widely proclaimed as the fastest guitarist of his era. This album was pretty much mandatory in any early 70's high school rockers collection. I highly recommend this album for anyone wanting a taste of classic early 70's rock and roll. Really good stuff from a really good band.

5 out of 5 stars Once There Was A Time...a space in time.......2006-11-10

A friend and I were recently reminiscing of a space in time before there were music downloads, mp3's, i tunes, and i pods. A time when vinyl was the musical medium . Albums contained liner notes and lyric sheets that were printed large enough to read. Cover Art was captivating and meant to be enjoyed. Songs were heard as being just a smaller segment of a larger collection of work. You dropped the needle, sat down and took it in from start to finish. Like a great movie, you wouldn't dare leave before the end. Every song set up the next one. The music was the event of that moment in time, not a wallpaper back drop. 'A Space In Time' is of that time, yet after 35 years it has stood the test. Timeless.

This commemorative reissue of music from 2001: A Space Odyssey combines the Also sprach Zarathustra theme, various Johann and Richard Strauss segments, and a ballet suite by Aram Khachaturian--all of which prove how much Stanley Kubrick's film attempts to avoid the soundtrack clichés of most science-fiction movies. Instead of the expected sci-fi effects, there is a more ironic application of music that would be otherwise incongruous to the celestial settings. Here, "The Blue Danube" complements scenes involving weightlessness and descending spacecraft, while Gyorgy Ligeti's creepy "monolith" music connotes Armageddon more than interplanetary exploration. The tracks play as they had appeared on the original soundtrack release back in the '60s, but there is also previously unreleased supplemental material and a dialogue montage entitled "HAL 9000." --Joseph Lanza

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great music, great reissue.......2007-04-16

This is a great collection of music and I love the great mastering job that was done with this. The inclusion of the tracks from the original MGM soundtrack release are a great bonus. The liner notes include interpretations of the film and the music that are insightful.

I noticed that the music in the movie is mixed in surround sound, it would be great if they could release this on DVD-Audio or SACD surround. I'd buy it again!

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-03-11

I have the old lp release of this music, what an incredible array of classical music, topped off by my personal favorite piece of music in the world, the blue danube waltz. Let yourself be carried away in deep space by this incredible score.

5 out of 5 stars whoa........2006-09-04

"Atmospheres" was enough to make me buy this album. just try to imagine what eternity might sound like. okay, now you know exactly what Atmospheres is. wow. who else could having captured the feelings that are in this score? this is above talented. this is above genius. this is above avand garde. this is too good to be labeled as anything at all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music for Halloween, very creepy.......2006-03-17

I bought this CD to use for a haunted house program, the music will creep you out.

5 out of 5 stars Bleakest of Futures..........2005-10-08

The atonal, unsettling atmosphere of much of the music of Ligeti is fitting to the bleak vision of a human future reigned by nothing but cold technology and of humans drained of emotions except for the deepest animalist fear originating from our inner reptilian brainparts which have not changed for over millions of years. The incongruity of Johann Strauss' lovely 'An der schönen blauen Donau' with the cold technicality of spacefaring as depicted here could not be more complete, but what a perfect find on Stanley Kubrick's part! It makes the uneasiness and confusion even greater. And then, to top it of, the complete and flabbergasting irony of using Richard Strauss' Fanfare for the 'rise of Man' in his 'Also Sprach Zarathustra': what a great destiny for 'Man' indeed, this bleakest of bleak visions of the future!
As a soundtrack for '2001: A Space Odyssey' this music together on one album is just great.
And besides, this soundtrack has indeed, like so many others I guess, made me aware of the genius of Ligeti, which otherwise might have gone unnoticed for me.

5 out of 5 stars Furmanek is a genius!.......2007-06-28

This is among the best sounding of all Ventures CD reissues. Ron Furmanek and Kevin Reeves did a wonderful job of remixing the multi-track master tapes. The new stereo mix is not the original hard right and left with the drums all on one channel. This is a more natural stereo mix with much more punchy bottom and clear highs. Ron Furmanek produced a handfull of great Ventures reissues in the mid '90's. They're all on the EMI label and include "Walk Don't Run, The Very Best Of The Ventures", "Tele-Ventures", "Live in Japan '65" and "The Ventures Christmas Album". Get 'em all.

5 out of 5 stars Classic albums.......2007-06-20

I have had these albums on vinyl for more years than I care to remember and was a little sceptical at first in buying this combination album but I am so pleased that I did. I have only had it a week now and have played it at least five times. I didn't realise how much I missed these classic tunes. The quality of the recording is excellent and the sound is strong and vibrant. Just love it.

5 out of 5 stars The Ventures.......2007-05-07

The ventures sound great on CD, just like the original records.
The cds are hard to find and amazon is great for having this music available. The Ventures bring back many memoriies and now I can listen to the great sounds all over again. Great music, great tracks.

3 out of 5 stars The Ol' Grey Mare.............2007-01-09

"She ain't what she used to be" This music used to feel so vital. The sound was raw and tough. .... Now it seeems tame and lame. Good recording. Fine musicians. It just didn't pull the plough like it used to

4 out of 5 stars La la la..........2006-10-01

These were the first two Ventures albums to be released on CD.

The Ventures Play Telstar, The Lonely Bull was the group's ninth album. It was their best selling album. The original concept for the album was "Hits of the Sixties", but when one of the Ventures heard the instrumental "Telstar" by the Tornados on the radio, he realized that it would be a smash hit. So, the Ventures recorded their own version of the song and added it to the album. The Ventures Telstar album beat the Tornados album into record stores by several weeks, and outsold it. Going along with the original "Hits of the Sixties" concept for the album, there are no original songs on the album. Every song is a cover version of an instrumental hit by somebody else. All very well played, naturally.

Ventures In Space was the group's 14th album. It is a concept album featuring songs with a "science fiction" theme. The "headlining" songs are the cover versions of the surf hits "Out of Limits" and "Penetration", both of which are very well performed. The rest of the songs, including a number of original tunes, are also very good. "War of the Satellites" is a personal favorite of mine.

Ventures fans will enjoy this CD.

Dividing her time between waging war on the music industry and writing sublime pop songs, Aimee Mann shows on her fourth solo album that she is equally adept at both. "Let's hear it for guys like me," she sings over the lilting rhythms and stylish guitar work of "Guys Like Me." Her case for toppling the corporate structure is airtight; just check her Web site for the latest bulletin. Her music, meanwhile, keeps getting better. The success of the Magnolia soundtrack may have restored her confidence following the record company strife that followed her first two solo releases--Whatever and I'm With Stupid--but the wounds have not healed. "All the perfect drugs and superheroes wouldn't be enough to bring me up to zero," the former 'Til Tuesday singer imparts over the layered, lush tones of the opening "Humpty Dumpty." Meanwhile, on the emotionally distressed "It's Not," she muses over a forlorn 16-piece string section, "I keep waiting for a change but I don't know for what." It could be the prettiest, most polite battle cry ever. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars TIMELESS.......2007-07-09

Great Lyrics, Great Compositions, Great Performance, Great Packaging. This is my first Aimee Mann album and I'm blown away.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Aimee.......2007-06-27

This in my opinion, is the best of Aimee Mann cds. It's not a cd you listen to when you are in a good mood. It's kind of depressing but it is also very good. If you brought one of her earlier cds and were disappointed you should get this one. It will revive your love for Aimee.

5 out of 5 stars bachelor number what??.......2006-08-12

"lost in space" is almost a perfect album. i don't like how some of the songs were performed on "bachelor no. 2" compared to her superior versions on the magnolia soundtrack, or live. on "lost in space," aimee mann MAKES IT LOOK EASY as a songwriter. she deftly chronicles a crumbling relationship with wonderful lyrics and catchy acoustic hooks, as her backing electric band adds drama.

"humpty dumpty" is a perfect pop-rock song about her ending relationship and how "all the perfect drugs and superheroes" couldn't put her back together again. if an emo band performed this, it would be incredibly annoying, but mann comes across as sincere and understated. absolutely brilliant. like i said, she makes it look easy!!!!

the next 4 songs are great. "pavlov's bell" brings upbeat rock energy to the album. "real bad news" is a grower of a song. at first i thought it was slightly boring, but now it's one of my favorites. it's followed by "invisible ink," another amazing song! though i don't think the opening line makes sense, the rest is so beautiful. mann brilliantly uses ouija boards ("I feel like a ghost who's trying to move your hands over some Ouija board, in the hopes I can spell out my name") and magic tricks ("what some take for magic at first glance, is just sleight of hand, depending on what you believe") as a metaphor for her relationship. "today's the day" is perhaps the climax of the album. she desperately pleads "isn't it good enough for you? isn't it enough to prove today's the day?" (to leave her for good). "and baby isn't this your chance, to make a break with circumstance?"

"the moth" is a catchy acoustic song using moths being drawn to the flame as a metaphor for love. it's really good. but perhaps the best song on the whole album is "it's not," a heartbreaking short acoustic song that sums up all the heartbreak of the album. ("So baby kiss me like a drug, like a respirator. And let me fall into the dream of the astronaut, where I get lost in space floating on forever - and you could call the rest just an afterthought"). wow.

aimee mann has kind of a monotone delivery that makes me disinterested when the song isn't catchy, but there's none of that on "lost in space." she never sings too hard (take note, jessica simpson and christina aguilera) yet she never fails to boldly and plainly tell her story in a touching, emotional way. her voice is perfect and her band totally nails every instrument, including keyboards which i usually don't like. very few females can pull off a rock song in a good way, but this band does.. they add punch and interesting flourishes to the songs without trying too hard to rock (like the people on that lame rock star reality show).

i definitely disagree with those who say this album sucks.. i don't like all or maybe even most of aimee mann's stuff, but she really nailed it on the head with this one. i can't stop listening. it's simply brilliant, and i know what i'm talking about.

5 out of 5 stars Gets better with every listen.......2006-06-05

I've been listening to this album in fairly heavy rotation for over a year. It not only holds up to repeated listenings, it just gets better, which is really extraordinary. The quality of the singing, the melancholy songwriting, the lushness of the sound ... it's just a brilliant album all-around.

5 out of 5 stars loneliness and isolation make great company................2006-03-05

listening to this cd is like trying to find your way home in the dark.
great lyrics, tremendous songwriting structure.
nobody can be able to create a song better than aimee.

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

The debut release by this superstar-Goth outfit shined (and still does) in all its glorious misery and despair. Just how can it be so beautiful? the listener wonders. For one thing, when the project is conceptualized by 4AD Records brain-man Ivo Watts-Russell and includes artists from groundbreaking U.K. bands such as Cocteau Twins, Magazine, and Dead Can Dance, and when a chunk of the material is from musical heavyweights such as Tim Buckley (the haunting "Song to the Siren"), Alex Chilton of Big Star (the devastating "Holocaust" and the heartbreakingly lovely "Kangaroo"), and Colin Newman of Wire (the rockin' "Not Me"), you're bound to come up with something that will be remembered and revered by old-school Goths everywhere. This is lush, hypnotic, astonishingly beautiful. --Lorry Fleming

4 out of 5 stars Jon Stone should grow up.......2006-11-11

He obviously hasn't listened to enough music to know what is good and what is bad. I listened to this album (now cd) recently and it still holds up. Timn Buckley's "Song to the Siren" is one of the most beautiful songs that I have ever heard; Elizabeth Fraser's cover hits it so hard if you don't get it then you cannot feel much. I could go on. See Kelly Garret's accurate review. I just had to chime in b/c somehow this Jon Stone's parent's left the computer on and the Playskool keyboard connected so their very little son typed out garbage that required a response. I listen to everything - classical, jazz, soul, funk, reggae, dub, punk, bluegrass, and on and on - this cd still kicks.

5 out of 5 stars Jon Stone is an idiot........2006-05-15

quite possibly on of the most influential "wave" albums of all time. jon stone is an idiot.

4 out of 5 stars Ground Breaking.......2006-02-15

In 1984 when this record came out, the 4AD label was releasing music that no one had ever heard before. Gothic bands such as Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, and Wolfgang Press were breaking ground in the underground music culture. Coulorbox was just taking English pop to new realms. These bands got together with a few of their friends and made an album together. It was really cool. A bunch of our favorite bands doing an album together, we loved it. It was played at parties and at the clubs. It was not the best things the bands had ever done but it was different. We loved the bands so of course we loved what they did together. It is kinda like if the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and The Who all did a record of songs from the 40s together. If you didn't like all three of those bands then you are not going to like that record, but wouldn't that have been something.something.
If you are not a fan of eighties gothic then you may not like this record (Stone). It is quiet in some parts and rocking in others. It depends on who is playing on that song. If you have a wide taste in music that includes Big Star and The Cocteau Twins, then you will probably like this record and the ones that came after.

5 out of 5 stars Stone is his own 16 year old.......2006-01-23

Stone's review is so wrong and he obviously has no idea about what he's talking about. This album is incredible and not intended to be DCD-centered, but a cumulative production by master 4AD producer Ivo Watts. Stone's lack of appreciation for the broad spectrum of the label's artists and Watts' central role only proves his own lack of ability to learn more than what he thinks he knows, like an ADD-diagnosed teenager decorating his room with plastic skulls.

Five years before the group's Urban Hymns broke the band into the mainstream, The Verve's first full-length effort, A Storm in Heaven, gave incredible insight into the band's ability to mesmerize it's audience. Hypnotic vocals courtesy of vocalist Richard Ashcroft and layered musical textures from the band make for an incredible, memorable album. This is not the stuff of background music but instead best suited to provide the soundtrack for a candlelit, incense-filled Saturday night. Perhaps the band's best effort to date. --Denise Sheppard

4 out of 5 stars Great music for a band with a stellar ending.......2007-05-27

I've been a Richard Ashcroft fan since I first heard "Bitter Sweet Symphony" but never ventured backward into the less known (in the United States) first two albums by The Verve. Since I picked up ''This Is Music: The Singles 92-98'' I've wanted to go back and listen to this album and ''A Northern Soul''. After hearing this album I could not stop listening or replaying it. The other reviewers say that this album is one of the most played in their collection and I can see why.

True to the excesses of The Verve at the time, the album has a very mellow and relaxing feel to it. It will calm you and let your mind think, but not in a negative manner. The songs are soft which allows the lyrics and melody to flow together. Some listeners won't be able to get past what seems to be similar sounds from each song or what they perceive as no real separations between songs, but those thoughts are misguided.

If you like "Bitter Sweet Symphony" because it was popular, stay away from this album. But if you would like to explore more of The Verve beyond that song and ''Urban Hymns'', check out this fantastic beginning for a band that never received the credits they deserved.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful .......2007-02-18

a storm in heaven is one of the most gorgeous albums i've ever heard. it is not like the verve's other albums. this is in a genre of it's own. imagine layers upon layers of soothing, swirling creamy guitar melodies and vocals drenched in reverb dreaminess that wrap around your head until you feel as though you're being gently lifted up into the clouds. listening to this album is like being in that place in between sleep and awake. you know, that state of mind when you wake up in your bed and hear the birds chirping outside, but you are still in your dream? that's what this album is like. is it musical paradise.

5 out of 5 stars Unlike anything I've ever heard........2007-02-09

This album is hard to describe but hell, I'm going to try. First off, if your looking to buy this album and the only thing you know about The Vere is "Bittersweet symphony" then this album may not be for you. This is unlike anything The Verve has ever done. With "A Storm in Heaven" the Verve take a very unothadox Jazzy, psychedelic Post rock aproach to their music that is simply awe inspiring. "A Storm in Heaven" has sonic sound scapes and sound walls that would make My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth blush. I don't know if it is or not but I like to think "A storm in Heaven" as the spearhead album that paved the way for Post Rock acts like Sigur Ros and Godspeed. It's the first album that I really heard the true essence for what post rock would later build apon. If you're a post rock fan or just like beautiful Psychedelic mood music then this album is a must have. Your music collection will thank you.

4 out of 5 stars Alot like Pink Floyd's More.......2006-10-07

VERY GOOD SPACE GUITAR ROCK.

Released in 1993, this is Verve's first full length CD (47 minutes long). Some people have complained about the sound quality, but my CD does not sound that bad. The sound and mix are all part of the ambience of the space music.

This is kind of guitar driven space, ambient music. It is a lot like Pink Floyd's album More, only the spacier parts are drawn out to a full, feature length CD.

This is very good and interesting space music. It doesn't get boring or tedious. Later in the CD, saxophones are added to give the music some variety. You can listen to the whole thing in one sitting. But, at the same time, it could make very interesting background music.

The only problem is that it all sounds alike. I listened to this CD and then another Verve CD and I though I accidently played the same CD twice. But, then I checked....yes these were different CD's with different songs.

The Verve (not to be confused with Verve Pipe) lasted about 6 years. They put out 3 full length CD's and a ton of EP's. I have a compilation CD where they tried accoustic music and actually singing songs! It wasn't very good.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK OUT FRANCIS MONKMAN, JAM. IT IS SIMILAR MUSIC, ONLY A LITTLE HARDER (AND I THINK A LITTLE BETTER).

5 out of 5 stars A Soundtrack For Sunsets And Starry Skies.......2006-05-06

Sheer bliss, a record full of wonder with Nick McCabe's hypnotic, soothing guitars as it's focal point. Richard Ashcroft's vocals accompany rather than lead through this ten track psychedelic voyage.
A different beast altogether from the worldwide smash 'Urban Hymns' but if you liked that album's dreamier songs such as 'Catching The Butterfly' or 'Neon Wilderness' then 'A Storm In Heaven' is definitely worth checking out.
There are five songs that make this album essential and in my opinion they are 'Star Sail', 'Slide Away', 'Beautiful Mind', 'Make It 'Til Monday' and 'See You In The Next One (Have A Good Time)'. They are all spellbinding, goose-bump inducing jams that (to use a Richard Ashcroft song title!) break the night with colour. Listen to any of these tracks on headphones while on a late evening stroll by the riverside or through a forest or across a wide open field and they capture your imagination.
'Beautiful Mind' is the best of the bunch and is a contender for my all time favourite song! It's a majestic masterpiece that I adore wholeheartedly, every note is perfect and every second is awe-inspiring to me. Listen to it at an ideal time in an ideal setting and hopefully it will grab you in the same way.
'A Storm In Heaven' is a much-treasured album in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!.......2007-05-13

Love this kind of music - can't get enough - have most all of the CDs. Excellent New Jersey-based company with excellent foresight and retro-understanding for the best party and jazz combos. Excellent choice for any kind of day or evening, party or relaxation time.

5 out of 5 stars Vital Organs..........2007-03-28

While some entries in the wonderful "Ultra-Lounge" series seem to get away from their 'theme', "Organs In Orbit" stays true to it's organ-mad sound from start to finish. Even the bonus track by "The Continental" has a strong Hammond sound to it. In some ways, that makes this one of the stranger entries in the series, because it sticks *so* closely to the format.

I think every cut on this disc has some merit (except "Flying Fiddles" where Shay Torrent (?) proves that an organ can sound like a fiddle...and not much else.) One of my absolute favorites would have to be the aptly named "Movin' At Midnight" (by the also aptly-named Sir Julian)...it's the coolest and swings like nobody's business.

There's also The Joe Bucci Trio's smooth-as-the-formica-top-of-a-wurlitzer "Lil' Darlin'", Milt Buckner's ultra-cool "The Late Late Show" (you might remember his "The Beast" from Volume Four) which definitely lives up to the late night feel of it's title, and the Immortal Martin Denny's Eerie, yet cheesy "Song Of the Bayou". Not to mention the cool wind sound effects (made on an organ, of course) on "Ill Wind."

I saved a new paragraph to try and describe the best cut of all: The John Buzon Trio and "Mr. Ghost Comes To Town." These are the same geniuses who brought us "Squatty Roo" on Volume Eighteen and two more great ones on "Mambo Fever." And "Ill Wind" (see above). "Mr. Ghost" is as sax-heavy as it is organ-infested, and it is a real attention grabber with it's infectious latin rhythms...one I come back to enjoy over and over again.

Another treat is 'The Forbidden Five' and their "Enchanted Farm" a take-off on Martin Denny, who often used bird calls, etc. in his songs to give them that 'Exotica' feel. The Five take this concept much further out, where instead of tropical bird calls, we have horses whinnying and cows mooing, etc. It even has bombs exploding and a Theremin, too..although actually there's a beautiful melody going on behind all the parody. Definitely one-of-a kind!

I forgot to mention organ hero Denny McLain, well represented here with four cuts, but I feel I've said enough. If you're searching for excellent examples of that cheesy lounge organ sound...look no futher. ;oD

5 out of 5 stars I love the Ultra-Lounge series........2006-12-10

The sound quality of the Ultra-Lounge series is excellent, even though the songs were recorded mostly in the 50's and 60's. Capitol Records packs each CD with carefully chosen tracks consistent with the theme of the particular volume in the series. Many of the selections that appear here aren't available elsewhere, either because the original album on which the song appeared is out of print, or because the song was issued as a single and never collected in an album. A few 'previously unreleased' tracks also appear here. This series is a wonderful introduction to the music of a by-gone era, and each album includes detailed notes on each track (artist, writers, date recorded, how released, etc.). I heartily recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this type of music.

I am 56 yrs old,and I think I am gonna die before finding out who
plays the song "the Twist" just like the style as "Ernie Freeman" on ORGAN and other songs on the LP in 1950/60s
(Patricia,Save the last dance for me, Hokey pokey, Hava Nagila,
etc..). Maybe E.Freeman himself played,I am not sure. Please help to find it.
Thanks and regards in advance

Remember when you'd sit in front of the t.v. at your grandparent's place on Saturday night and Lawrence Welk would come on? You know... just after Hee-Haw? Like around 6 pm or so. Man those were the days! That's what this c.d. reminds me of. This is the soundtrack to life in the 70's at my grandparents house when they weren't listening to gospel music or watching Oral Roberts on Sunday morning. What can I say... I had a surrealistic childhood.

Two things come to mind:
1) listening to this may bring back nostalgic memories or at least give one an appreciation of organ dominated hip-swingin' tunes of the 50's-60's.
2) this may be useful as an interrogation tool for law enforcement officers, military intelligence personnel or the like. Caution should be exercised when using said c.d. for interrogative purposes as repetitive use may result in permanent brain dis-function for both the confessor and the interrogator. God be with you my friend, God be with you.

5 out of 5 stars Never let this album go.......2007-02-09

When I first listened to this CD I thought it was a little long and somewhat boring. It was my first exposure to Spiritualized and from what everyone was telling me I was a little disappointed. However, I did not let my first run around make up my mind. I kept on listening and everytime I did something new came up in the music. Eventually, listening to the CD became more than just music playing it became an experience of life. The music eveloped me and I felt the connection. There are a lot of CDs I have that I will listen to when I just want a sing along or to rock out. However when I want to be part of the musical experience I feel there are really only two. "Marquee Moon" by Television and this album. There are others that come close to the experience but only those two really achieve the mark. This is an amazing CD.

5 out of 5 stars mr. wilson and mr. spector will be pleased.......2006-09-28

i was first introduced to spiritualized at a jesus and mary chain show in 1992. the lights went down, all you could hear is organ and someone in the crowd jokingly asks,"what, are we in church?"
they've been one of my favorite bands ever since. and when this album came out, well it has been one of my favorites ever since. this album shows that music is still going somewhere. listen to this cd in headphones over and over and you will find yourself amazed at the new things you hear with every listen. it's been almost 10 years that i've played this cd over and over and i still hear new sounds in it's infinite layers. there are only a few albums that i could listen to as much as i've listened to this one.
if you like great production, if you like soul, if you like gospel, if you like psychedelic, if you like rock and roll, if you like "pet sounds", if you like "seargent pepper's," if you like phil spector, daniel lanois or brian eno, do yourself a favor and give this a shot.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-08-02

I was introduced to Spiritualized through a free music site and bought "Let It Come Down" as my first album. I immediately went out and purchased "Ladies and Gentlemen...", and I was not disappointed. While "Let It Come Down" may have more layers and perhaps more accessible music, "Ladies and Gentlemen..." is certainly more consistent, with subtle touches that repeated listens uncover, such as the use of Pachabel's Canon in D on the title track. There is a wide variety of styles in use on this album, including classical, jazz, rock, and progressive influences.

For all fans of Spiritualized, Radiohead, and all who want to escape into someone else's dreamscape.

4 and a half stars.

4 out of 5 stars Words cannot describe this..........2006-03-12

I first heard the song "Ladies and Gentlemen we are floating in space" in the movie Vanilla Sky (an awesome movie) and I just had to find out who the Artist was! This song got me hooked on Spiritualized! Their sound is like no other, it just blew me away. I have to buy this cd!! :)

5 out of 5 stars This is great!.......2005-05-22

I cant tell you how long I have been searching for this cd. I first heard the first track during the movie "Vanilla Sky". It plays as Sophie is walking in to David's Memorial. They neglected to include it on the soundtrack, so I didnt know the name of the band or the song, and it took a bit of detective work on my part. I finally found it, and the first track "ladies and gentlemen...." alone is worth it for me. Anyway, music for me is all about how it makes me feel, and I love how this makes me feel. I love music that has the abstract feel of a dream, so this does it for me. For those of you who are interested in another great song that the aforementioned movie also forgot to include, you must also try "Njosnavlin" by sigur ros (it plays as david jumps) You can find it in the cd entitled "()" and it is track #4.
