Former pro surfer Donavon Frankenreiter rides a new wave on his sophomore effort. A change in labels from mentor Jack Johnson's Brushfire to Lost Highway finds the bearded, long-haired, doe-eyed singer/songwriter channeling his inner Talking Book-era Steve Wonder on this occasionally funky and consistently engaging keyboard-dominated album. His dreamy, near-falsetto voice floats through these soulful slices of pop perfection. The low-boil funk and nonchalant vocals sometimes recall Curtis Mayfield or Boz Scaggs in their casual, yet distinctive approach. An offhand natural warmth oozes from this recording that finds the singer and his band tapping an earthy groove. Nothing seems rushed or forced, as the musicians lock into the sunshiny, blue-eyed, melodic R&B vibe. A few more upbeat cuts like the irresistible title track and the riff-driven "That's Too Bad" might have added more supple firepower, but even the ballads connect with a rootsy low-key charm. Frankenreiter hasn't entirely forsaken his tropical beach-boy charm, as shown by the closing "Beautiful Day," but Move by Yourself is a refreshing twist that proves the artist is far more than a surf bum who picked up music to occupy his downtime on a rainy day. --Hal Horowitz

This is my first Donavan CD and I am in love with the soft mellow tunes that you could just sit and relax to. This will be the first of several cd's that I will purchase by him.

In my opinion, the most beautiful song is "The way it is" and reminds me Barry White's earlier groovy compositions.

This is a bit of the 70's groovy music beat...but his soothing voice still comes through. I liked this one due to his voice and tone, but prefer his more folkish beats in other of his albums.

Love it!!! Can't speak to the technical side like some of the other reviewers but just listening to the album makes me happy, it's nice and mellow and if you love Jack Johnson (like I do) then you will also love this album! Can't wait for more!!!

Poor Man's Jack Johnson.......2007-03-14

...Donavon Frankenreiter is no Jack Johnson. The album has an enjoyable start and things seem really promising when Jack helps out on the second song 'Free', but by the time it is over the songs start to sound the same. Don't get me wrong, this is a nice album with enjoyable laid back tunes, but there are better albums out there (like all of Jack Johnson's albums). Save yourself the cash and download Free and be done with it.

Ohhhh, its finally over. God help me, if I could only get the last 38 minutes of my life back. They were spent enduring Donovan Frankenreiter's 1st attempt at making an album. Further proof that surfers should stick to what they do best--SURFING--and leave making records to musicians. If anyone can give me a single good reason for this album to exist, I am all ears. It is beyond bad, his songs are what Jack Johnson would've been writing in junior high school, only more boring.

Great Mellow Surf Rock.......2007-01-19

It's no accident that Donavon's music sounds a lot like Jack Johnson. They grew up together, and ths album is on Johnson's Brushfire label. I was introduced to Donavon's music at a concert at 8150 in Vail, CO, and bought his 2 albums immediately afterward. His relaxed yet energetic style in concert translates very well in the studio, apparently. This album is a fun, toe-tapping, finger snapping, dance around the house collection of songs. I can't recommend the album, or seeing Donavon in person, highly enough!

Somehow I hoped for more. I really like the Jack Johnson albumns I own, and had hoped that a live performance with these other two musicians would impress. It did not. Don't waste your money or time.

This CD is a great mix of music. Although a little short, the songs are great to jam to while riding in the car. I especially love the last track-the hidden one is so funny! Gotta check it out!

If you really enjoy Jack and friends for what they are, and the way the music makes you feel...this is a MUST have. If you play(even just a little bit) GREAT CD to jam along with. Nothing fancy, just the roots of all that is good. To call yourself a Jack fan and not enjoy this, I guess you just don't get it .

Jack's Worst.......2007-01-18

Being a fan of Jack Johnson, I thought this one would be as good as the others. I wasn't impressed at all. It sounds like a few guys pickin' around in the basement. The recording quality has very little production value. At best, these are okay live versions of usually great songs. This is an unnecessary piece for your Jack Johnson collection.

Short and sweet.......2007-01-10

Excellent selection of some of the best from these three friends (and a little Zach Gill, too!). Gives you the feeling you're sneaking into a weekend jam session at Jack's house. Fans of these guys will want to add this CD to their library. Seems to me, though, they could have easily added a few more songs and make this a full length effort.

What an excellent dose of musical delight. I loved Donavon's debut album on Brushfire records. This album is a stand out on its own. Every track is played with heart and soul and I would recommend this to any lover of folk, jazzy, and good ole rock and roll!!

I really liked the last album from surfer Donavon Frankenreiter but this one is more groovy. sounds little like jamiroquai now and then. Very relaxed.

If you are tired of listening to music, even new music, that is consistently being put out, and sounds exactly the same, this cd is for you. Finally, someone is discovered with a little talent for a change. This guy, as well as Jack Johnson, are the poets of our generation.
