Jesse McCartney is so pinup-ready, so boy-bandishly appealing in that shaggy-sweet kind of way, that anyone older than 17 will likely be rolling their eyes at him. You know what comes next: they shouldn't. In a classic case of can-that-many-teenage-girls-be-wrong?, McCartney's solo debut sparkles—the danceable tracks call to mind Michael Jackson in his early '80s heydey, the ballads reek of Babyface, and the rest rolls up Hall & Oates, Craig David, and flecks of Usher into a rib-sticking concoction anybody with an ear for pop will want to swallow whole. It's not exactly brain food—the tracks he co-wrote, including standout and opener "She's No You," "What's Your Name," and "That Was Then," are little more than smooth, shiny come-ons telling high school girls what they want to hear. And there's no denying the disc is front-loaded, with the relationshippy stuff starting to wear as track 12 approaches. But despite those things—and despite the name he's made for himself on TV (first on All My Children and more recently on WB's Summerland), which will only add to his early panning among "serious" listeners—Beautiful Soul sets out plenty of reasons to believe that this heartthrob, no matter how long his tousle-haired beauty holds up, has got soul to burn. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great cd!.......2007-07-06

I particularly liked She's No You,Get Your Shine On, Because You Live,& Beautiful Soul. Tips when buying cd's from this artist: #1- he sounds good on this cd, but not live #2-if you are thinking about buying this cd because you like how jesse mccartney looks, but you don't like the music~PLEASE DON'T!!!! I am one of the very few girls who doesn't think he's hot, but I love most of his music. It is very good(most of the time).

5 out of 5 stars I love Jesse!.......2007-05-07

When I listen "Beautiful Soul" for the first time, I loved the song. The CD has a excellent rithms of music. Great great CD!

5 out of 5 stars His soul is beautiful.......2007-03-21

As a 50 year old mother of two girls who are major fans of Jesse's, I found this disc to be full of soft, sweet melodies that are easy to listen to and even easier to appreciate. Jesse has penned tender love songs that are what really melt a girls heart. No foul language, no [...] towards females, no gangsta lingo. I like this cd and listen to it often.

2 out of 5 stars it okay. .......2006-12-09

this cd is okay. nothing special. nothing new. nothing deep. its just ok. i have some favorites in this cd. but its nothing compared to other artists like DRAKE BELL, who actually put effort into their albums. but jesses ok though. well one jesse fan wrote a review saying that jesse sings good in this album but doesnt sound good live. well that tells you something.

jeez some artist these days are getting so boring and stale.

i really reccommend DRAKE BELL. hes a very refreshing and amazing artist. you should check him out.

5 out of 5 stars Jesse, my man.......2006-09-30

I really like this CD. Like, really, a lot, A LOT! Jesse is a good singer, even if his voice is maybe a little nasal-y at times. I like the style of his songs, too. Some are kind of pop mixed with R&B... it makes me think of Get Out (Leave) and Too Little Too Late by JoJo. But the songs on this album that I like the best are the slower ones, like Why Don't You Kiss Her?, and, especially, Take Your Sweet Time, even if the lyrics can be a little cheesy maybe, I LOVE IT TO PIECES! I also really like Because You Live, Why Is Love So Hard To Find?, and I REALLY like Come To Me.... *siiigh* Be warned, there's nothing extaordinarily deep here, it's more directed towards us teens, but it's still AWESOME. This is a really good album and I recommend it... I really do love it, as you can probably see, haha.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

This 1982 sleeper captures Van Morrison banking the fires of his more urgent, R&B-flavored '70s classics to sculpt a quieter, contemplative synthesis laced with Celtic flourishes, minimalist synthesizers, and the skeletal horn charts of saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis and trumpeter-synthesist Mark Isham. Neither as expansive as the pastoral jazz meditations of the underrated Common One nor as limpid as the glossier, sometimes gloomier confessional pop that dominates his later-'80s albums, Beautiful Vision hews to ballads and loping, midtempo songs that allow Morrison gentle foils for his unmistakable vocal melismas. On its best tracks, "Dweller on the Threshold," "Cleaning Windows," "Vanlose Stairway," and "She Gives Me Religion," he alchemizes soul, gospel, and his own Irish roots in a balance he would often pursue from this point forward. --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Soul Brother #1.......2007-07-26

This belongs in the category of Van's great Celtic Soul albums like Astral Weeks, Common One and Veedon Fleece. Van expresses his Northern Irish roots in titles like "Northern Muse" and "Cleaning Windows". The latter song is as down-home and funny as Van has ever allowed himself to get since the out-takes from the Bang sessions. The closing improv where he raps in a broad Belfast accent about finding a "tanner and a three D bit" on the windowsill and having to "go down the dole" are classic stuff. In the same song, Van fills in his early musical and mystical history. "I heard Leadbelly and Blind Lemon on the street where I was born" "I went home and read my Christmas Humphries book on Zen". "Celtic Ray" is a beautiful evocation of life in Ireland, "When the coal brick man comes around, on a cold November day, You'll be on the Celtic ray, are you ready?" Yeah Van, I'm ready. Rock on celtic soul brother #1.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds from somewhere above the clouds.......2007-05-22

think this may be my favourite Morrison album...but I am still not sure. "Poetic Champions", "Moondance" and "Into the Music" are also favourites, how can I narrrow it down to one? Well, either way this one is special - "Beautiful Vision" really does descend into the meditation and etheral zones and delivers some of the most uplifting popular music ever composed. In this way I see connections with other VM albums (Into the Music's "Healing has begun" and "its all in the Game/You know what they are talking about" and Common one's " summertime in England"). But this one is more consistent in its main themes of love, happiness, nature and spiritual nourishment. The listener may suspend the harsh realities of the modern world and just maybe "chill out" with the aspirational views and sounds. "Celtic Ray" celebrates the links between the Celts of the home countries. "Dweller on the Threshold" may be linked to hope and bravery of choice. "She gives me religion" opens us up to many possibilities but it takes joy in the simple but extemely powerful act of love. Then there a number of jewels that convey the joy of vision through music - "Beautiful Vision", "Aryan Mist" "Vanlose Stairways" and "Scandinavia". These songs are "bridged" by one of Van's most joyful, triumphant and hope-inspiring songs "Across the Bridge where Angels dwell". It's a place I definately want to be. The album ends with the oddity "Cleaning windows", a song that is misplaced on this album. Music for a cold winter's night with the lights down low. Beautiful Vision, Beautiful music.

4 out of 5 stars van again........2007-01-12

This one is also gentle jazz, a little celtic rhythm too. And may I also recommend "Into the Music", which I just found recently. All good, middle era Van Morrisoon: mellow, mystic, celtic, lovely.

4 out of 5 stars Great Mellow Atmosphere.......2006-02-20

Van is in a mellow grove on "Beautiful Vision". One of his more celtic-inspired albums, this one will take you on a wonderful and beautiful journey. Van's vocals, as always, are a wonder to behold.

5 out of 5 stars Vanfan.......2005-10-22

This is one of my favorite cd's. I can listen all day and I'm floating!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Another great tune!.......2007-06-19

As resplendent as I think she is and as much as I'm in awe of her talent, I think Beyoncé is becoming slightly overexposed. Her sheer ubiquity is getting a bit tedious, quite frankly and I often find myself feeling that if she would just go away for a while I'd appreciate her all the more upon her return. Shakira, I've never heard of before now and judging her solely on her voice, I don't believe I've missed anything. Together in the video, the two of them look like a pair of... well, let's just say I was totally unimpressed. I was left thinking no wonder my sister won't let her young daughters (aged 5 and 11) watch MTV.

But none of that can take away from the sheer power of this song. I'm not a huge r&b fan (anymore) but this one is something really special. I can just imagine it doing big things in clubs and at parties world-wide. I can see it crossing culture and language barriers with total ease. I always give credit where I think it's due and I believe Stargate, alongside Ms Knowles, Shakira and Eduardo Cabra, did a great job producing the tune.

I also love the Maurice Joshua Remix of "Irreplaceable". It's a totally funky house mix and reminds me of my wild and carefree clubbing days in NYC, way back when. Glorious stuff.

Amazon.com essential recording

The Isley Brothers were known for their ability to rock the house, but in truth they were an accomplished vocal group before they were anything else. Beautiful Ballads collects some of their sweetest, most soulful slow songs from the '70s and '80s, reaches over into the rock world for Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me," James Taylor's "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," and Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay," and adds originals such as "Don't Say Goodnight" and "Caravan of Love." Beautiful Ballads goes beyond being a mere soundtrack for seduction (though that works, too): this is healing music, good for the heart as well as the soul. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars SERIOUS baby makin' music..........2007-01-17

...And damn am I mad at the Amazon Fishbowl header on this page, 'cause I already had the title in mind! I just pulled this CD out of the racks after many years, for the purpose of uploading it onto my girlfriend's iPod. Man oh man, the memories! I'm not that old, but I remember when I bought this CD back in the early 90's. It was my first Isley Brothers CD. Let me just say that while I've since purchased many more I.B. CDs, there's just nothing like the first time. Don't get me wrong, there are other great compilations out there, 'Funky Family' comes to mind (although, as the title suggests, it covers the funkier dimensions of The Brothers' illustrious career); 'Ultimate Isley Brothers' is good if you're on a budget; you could probably even cop a decently priced copy of 'It's Your Thing: The Story of the Isley Brothers' at this point. But pound for pound, you just can't beat this CD. I think it has something to do with the sequencing - it seems as though whomever decided on the tracks to be included as well as the order in which they should be played spent a lot of time making out to the Isley Brothers! I mean sure, there are some glaring omissions ("Groove With You"? "Between the Sheets"? I could go on and on), but as the music progresses you couldn't care less. Starting its seductive journey with the beautiful testimonies to the early stages of love "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Hello It's Me", you're reeled in. Then you move into Stage 2 with "Let's Fall in Love (Parts 1 & 2 {isn't it amazing how R&B artists were so prolific back in the 70's that their genius needed TWO PARTS to encapsulate one song? Let's see Ne-Yo or Usher do that!}). By track 11 ("Voyage To Atlantis"), you've already gone from sweet courtship to a full declaration of love to a delicate plea for consumation of this union andletnoothermaneverputusasunder, thanks in no small part to this devilishly hypnotic music coming from your speakers in the background.

And this is why I feel the need to post a warning here: in the wrong hands, this music is potentially DANGEROUS. I hate the term "grown folks' music" but I do believe the title may apply here. If you're inexperienced with this sort of thing I'd advise listening alone a few times first before trying to unleash this on your mate (kiddies, stick with your Justin Timberlake records in the meantime). Don't slip this on as mere background music while you're trying to get your groove on if you're not really serious about the person you're with - there are far too many single unwed mothers out there already! But if you're with that special someone (or someone you're hoping might be that special someone), this is the music to 'seal the deal' with.

The only arguement I might make is with Track #7 - what the hell is "Caravan of Love" doing in this booty-call mixtape? It screws up the whole vibe right in the middle of the CD. If anything I'd recommend programming the tracks in advance and leaving that one out, or at least making it the last track. If you use the CD correctly, by then you should laying back smoking a cigarette or eating jellybeans or whatever you call afterplay. ;-)

5 out of 5 stars The Isley Brothers- Beautiful Ballads.......2006-06-29

I really enjoy listening to this cd. Like the Love Songs, most of the songs on the cd are great!

The only 2 songs I don't like on here is "You're beside me (Parts 1 & 2)," and "I once had your love (And I can't let go)". The great tracks on here are:

-Brown Eyed Girl

-Hello It's Me

-Let's Fall In Love

-Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight

-Make Me Say It Again Girl (Parts 1 & 2)

-Choosey Lover

-Lay Lady Lay

-Don't Say Goodnight (It's Time For Love) (Parts 1 & 2)

According to the sticker on the front cover, it says that this cd has 14 of the most romantic songs ever waxed! Therefore, you should get this cd!

4 out of 5 stars No Regrets.......2005-07-05

These ballads can indeed be considered beautiful. The Isley Brothers definitely have talent as artists in general and musicians in particular. The lyrics of these songs as conveyed by the Isleys tug at the heart. That being said, it is still not to my taste.

This is definitely from the R&B/Soul part of the spectrum. My tastes run more towards artists like Sinatra and Humperdinck. I bought this album because of the title and it was no what I expected. Still, the quality of this album is such that I have no regrets.

5 out of 5 stars Soulful.......2005-06-29

This album is truly an all time classic. Its spiritual, sincere and soulful. This is a must for your oldies collection. You can have fun with this album. I always do.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't like it.......2007-07-12

I didn't like "Beautiful Liar" even though I like both Beyonce and Shakira. I am fans of both artists but this collabortion is just horrible. Beyonce has released great songs like "Crazy In Love", "Baby Boy" ,"Deja Vu" and "Irraplaceable." Shakira has released great songs like "Hips Don't Lie", "Whenever, Wherever" and "Underneath Your Clothes." You'd think a collaboration would be good--it isn't. This song isn't memorable at all. I was expecting a lot with these two talents collaborating. I was really let down. Sorry B And Shakira--thumbs DOWN!

4 out of 5 stars Hypnotic.......2007-05-03

There are times where a duet can be absolutely surprising. Although there haven't been many good ones these past few years, some of them have worked well. Beyonce has shown a surprise or two with duets, adn her latest one is definitely so far her best. Beautiful Liar, her collaboration with Shakira is so far her best song yet. The song is very upbeat, and really brings out a seductive tune that is just electrifying. Although Beyonce is a bit overdone, this is definitely a good song for any die hard fan, or anyone who love the beat. This one does seduce well, but it isn't a liar.

4 out of 5 stars Credible single from two of the most entertaining female artists.......2007-04-19

I only recently started listening to current hit radio singles, and with all of the tinny hip-hop beats infesting the charts, Beyoncé and Shakira's "Beautiful Liar", with its string/horn instrumentation, is definitely a breath of fresh air. While its general theme may be nothing new in terms of lyrics, it works for both of the divas' voices (both Beyonce's sassy belting and Shakira's thinner and softer tones) and brings a sound to the table that incorporates the styles of both women. I'm still in awe about how well it lends itself to both R&B and Latin pop without being cheesily overproduced. It being one song, I can't say much more about it, but it is both worthy of its radio airplay and a musical success all its own.

Excellent! I really enjoyed his debut CD. Viktor has a rich, soulful voice; something that you don't hear too much anymore. He should be getting a whole lot more airplay in the coming months as summer kicks into full swing. And the instrumentals behind his voice! Sweet!

Inspired by the astoundingly popular The Three Tenors series, Broadway director Marion J. Caffey conceived and directed Three Mo' Tenors, bringing greater visibility to the classically trained African American voice. Starring seasoned tenors Roderick Dixon, Thomas Young, and Victor Trent Cook, Three Mo' Tenors is a theatrically staged concert set taped for public television's Great Performances. A companion to the taped show, the disc features just over an hour of live music from it. The phenomenal showmanship of Dixon, Young, and Trent Cook takes shape in the styles of opera, Broadway, blues, jazz, soul, spirituals, and gospel. The three virtuosos hit high C's with clarity and brilliance; scat with grace and grit; belt, bend and hold a note to beat the band. They move the audience to a state of near-ecstasy performing the traditional "Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)" and Puccini's glorious "Nessum Dorma." Other standouts include the jazz classic "Twisted," a rollicking version of "Today I Sing the Blues," and the salty "Minnie the Moocher." Boisterous, bold, and bountiful, Three Mo' Tenors is a modern classic. --Paige LaGrone

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bravo! Mo' Mo' Mo'.......2006-05-13

The word "Mo'" in the title got my attention. I bought the CD to compare it to the already popular "Three Tenors" (Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras). Wow! Was I surprised. I had expected an all opera, classical and possibly spiritual repetoire. But, the music varies from "Nessun Dorma" to "Love Train" was truly, truly delightful. I enjoyed the wonderful voices of Thomas Young, Roderick Dixon, and Victor Trent Cook and the variety of musical selections so much that I purchased several other copies for my family and friends. Then, several months later, I saw their performance on PBS. I immediately ordered the VHS offered by the TV station, paying way, way over the retail price. But, I had to have it. It was, and is, the most exciting musical performance that I have seen. Later, when I put the tape into the player at my son's house, my 5-year-old granddaughter Ciara stood next to the sofa to watch. I expected her to move away soon, but, she stood there, during the entire playback of the performance, and I do mean from beginning to end. I left the tape there so that son could see it later. The following day, and for most days during the next several weeks, Ciara asked to have the tape played, until she later was taught to handle it herself. The family has since replaced my VHS with the DVD so that now, when Ciara visits me, we can watch the show again (and again). "Three Mo' Tenors" was so surprisingly wonderful- with great voices, charismatic personalities, terrific orchestral arrangements, lively and precisely choreographed routines, and just an overall feeling of mutual admiration and respect among the three gentlemen. The beautiful cinematics, with frequently interspersed shots of the enthusiatic audience, contributes to the feeling that I am actually there at the concert. Every time I watch it, I see and hear something new. When I first heard the CD, I was not fascinated by the countertenor voice. After seeing Victor Trent Cook's heartwarming performance on the DVD, and hearing his comment about his mother's definition of a countertenor, I have been granted a new appreciation for his voice. Here it is, years later, and I'm still enamored, remembering Roderick Dixon's "Make Them Hear You" elicits tears, Thomas Young's "Twisted" makes me laugh, and the duet with Victor and Thomas (see, I'm now on first-name basis with them) is so beautiful. I could to on and on. In fact, it's time for another listen.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must have for any music lover!.......2006-01-07

I would rate this CD more than five stars if I could! I picked up this CD not knowing anything about these guys, but, knowing that I liked some of the songs contained on it. I was absolutely blown away by this collection! These guys have it all. Voices, talent, showmanship, style, technique, etc. Everytime I listen to it, I feel like I'm sitting right there in the theatre. I am a huge fan of opera, jazz and gospel. This CD covers it all! Although my favorite tracks are La Donna e Mobile, Make Them Hear You, and Nessun Dorma, they are all so good! I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again. You have to hear them to believe them!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful collection of music.......2005-08-23

A good album is one that can't be categorized neatly. Three Mo' Tenors tackles classic opera, Broadway tunes and other genres with ease. They have beautiful voices, and the music they choose to interpret is so universal that even my toddler girl loves listening to it! Their technical expertise combined with their stage presence and charisma makes for an enjoyable cd. Highly recommended - especially if you are looking to introduce yourself or your children to different musical genres.

5 out of 5 stars awesome music selection.......2005-08-02

These are amazing musical selections and amazing vocalists; a must-have for any well-rounded music collection. This trio can really sing!

4 out of 5 stars They Left Out The Best Song.......2004-11-11

One of my most favorite performance DVD's, but how, or why, on earth did they leave off the most stiring single number on the CD - "A Song For You," by Rodrick Dixon?

Put it in, and it's a "five."
