The standout cuts on this follow-up to Kathleen Edwards's highly praised debut, Failer, serve notice that the Canadian artist has no intention of remaining a cult favorite in the States. The opening "In State" evokes the anthem-like sweep of Tom Petty's "Refugee," complete with signature organ by the Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench, though its lyric of a prison-bound paramour smacks of déjà vu, Failure having opened with a similar narrative. The propulsive title track, with its irresistible double-entendre hook, deserves to be Edwards's breakthrough hit, while the yearning "Old Time Sake" and the buoyant yet bittersweet "Summerlong" expose a disarming tenderness underlying her tough-chick bravado. Over the course of the album, too much of the midtempo material sounds too much the same, more inspired lyrically than musically, failing to sustain the momentum of the opening tracks. Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.

This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices,the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.

This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!

Well worth buying.

Based on her age--the Massachusetts musician turned 17 in 2006--the casual observer could be forgiven for expecting Sonya Kitchell to sound something like Brit wunderkind Joss Stone. While both women possess instruments considerably older than their years would indicate, Kitchell draws greater inspiration from blues- and jazz-oriented singer-songwriters like Bonnie Raitt and Norah Jones, than soul belters like Aretha Franklin. And while she takes a lower-key approach than the electrified Raitt--Words is a mostly acoustic affair, featuring Kitchell on guitar--she's likely to appeal to a similar audience, which is to say, one that's logged more time on this earth than the artist herself. "Part of me is new and part of me is old," she sings on "Tinted Glass." Although Kitchell performs the occasional cover live (mostly jazz standards), she penned every one of these 12 tracks herself: the average artist twice her age can't claim as much. Better yet, there isn't a bad one in the bunch, though the titles can be pretty pedestrian ("Words," "Think of You," etc.). But it's the wistful songs, the supple voice, and the swinging instrumental passages that count, especially on "Let Me Go," the soulful, scat-bedecked CD opener. A crack backing band--with Miro Sprague on piano and Hammond B-3 organ a particular standout--helps to make Words Came Back to Me one of the year's most noteworthy debuts. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

For me, the CD discovery of the decade.......2007-05-05

Dear Sonya,
"Let me go" grabs the listener who is attuned to pop songs from the radio, which I am not, so the main reason, I realize, why it captivates me is your voice and the way you wrap it around the text. Obviously, the hook is strong enough to pull in even my young children, who sing along to it. My boy especially likes the slow change at 2:06. There he always says, "I like this part".

"Train" was my first favorite song from the album. I thought the mood and the audacity with which you sang such precocious lyrics as "...nor do I know where I'm going, so I won't pretend" were brilliant. I had to think of Alanis's "Ironic" in that context, which I loved at the time. And then the song goes on, the train continues down the tracks, the listener goes with you through wind and weather and is hoping he could sit across from you in the dining car like Ethan Hawk and Julie Delpy (in _Before Sunset_ and _Before Sunrise_) during their first meeting.

"Can't get you out of my mind" takes me back to 1988 and Anita Baker. The local radio station played a song from _Rapture_ every morning. It really got me going and stayed with me all day. Your bass-punctuated song soars through the cloudy organ harmonies, the pianistic blurbs and guitar riffs to reach a point where Anita Baker herself would get goose-bumps. This is the song where the instrumentalists in your band seem to say the most and have the most vital interaction with your voice.

"Words came back to me" is brilliant! My mind and heart go somewhere else when the cello and your mellow voice admit to your saying the wrong things most of the time. The metaphor is wonderful - and then the hook comes and takes the listener up for a while before he is placed down gently with "life can be such a give and take". And then there's yet another hook "There are some words I could never do without" which makes me think of which words I couldn't do without.

Again, I think you show wisdom beyond your experience when you see the give and take of life, but I don't want to jump on the "she's so young" bandwagon because that is not important. Your voice again does things to me - not only exhaling and singing the syllables here, but also on the inhaling at the beginning of a phrase. The deep thumping of the drum at the end is something that I hope you come back to on another album!

The "Cold day" is something that I relate to by thinking of a bad day in a relationship, one of those days where you cannot communicate and where time goes on in spite of what you feel is a frost that threatens to freeze the world and stop it from turning. The use of "he" and "she" makes the song universal and helps the listener think of people who have had rough times in relationships; then "Can I hold you in my arms" changes the perspective and speaks to the listener's emotions.

No matter what starts with the quirky term "intervention" which may be on the tip young people's tongues these days - I don't know - but it captures the listener's attention and makes him listen to the lyrics more closely than he might otherwise. The chorus with "no matter what you do, I'll be there for you" is affirming, something that everyone wants to hear! Who doesn't want to know someone who will be there no matter what? The change into the funk/R&B area shows how talented you are and how much musical potential you've got.

The "Simple Melody" is another one that the kids and I have to sing along to. Your voice on "just a simple melody" reaches a stage of velvet perfection that reminds me of the best moments of the best concert singers' recitals I have ever been to. Your lyrics melt into the music (or vice-versa?) with "lately all I want to do" that allow the listener to believe what you are singing without any second-guessing. Who wouldn't want to be the arms you fall into?

"Think of you" starts with an acoustic guitar riff reminiscent of something Joni Mitchell might have recorded in her best years ("Help me"). The bass really comes into its own here. The organ plays a bit tentatively, but the prods it takes into the musical line give the pulse a shape that seems reminiscent of something and at the same time quite original. The change at and repetition of "I would do anything" make this listener appreciate the vulnerability you are showing at that point in the song; the adoration of the person you are singing about and the upbeat rhythm portray a happy relationship that can hardly allow you to feel down and blue, but then that is also part of relationships.

"Fields of gold" is such a beautiful phrase for a song, as are "buttercups and Queen Anne's lace" and "icy cold stream", but of course it is the drawn out "oh, my darling" and then the twelve-string guitar reminding me of America that really take me in. One of the first things I told people about your CD was that each song had a wonderful pop hook, an "Ohrwurm" as they say in German, something that gets in your ear and stays with you all day. The piano, by the way, is decent and effective and beautiful throughout the whole CD. Simply wonderful. The outro with the cymbals and bongos which give the song a second breath is such a nice surprise from a formal perspective that it is also worth mentioning.

"Tinted Glass", with its bare guitar sounding like a bass ukulele and vocal line that has more syllables than Madredeus has strings is such a pleasant barcarolle, the lead acoustic guitar very reminiscent of the Portuguese group and your voice entering new territory in its low range. I get the feeling that you used a different microphone on this one or a different equalizer setting. With the words "take a deep breath" I have to think of the third movement of Gorecki's Third Symphony. If you don't know it, listen to it (all) and check out the breathing strings in the last movement!

The singing on "I'd love you" puts you in the Hall of Fame of vocalists for the color you put into the melody. The brushes the drummer uses add a nice touch to this song. "You are sweet and kind and your spirit glows" is a nice line. Nice piano solo at 2:30! And then you go to town with your improvising, letting the listener of your studio album guess what might be in store for him at a live concert.

Was it "Jerry" that made me think of Nick Drake? Is it the interesting tuning of your guitar or the cello-like accompaniment coming from the double-bass? In any case, it is a beautiful song with quite a poignant story in it, one that is interesting to listen to again and again. "And years have passed on by now" takes the song into a musical dimension that makes the listener press "repeat" for more, more, more of that gorgeous music. The lucky fan who doesn't do that immediately and waits around for the song about your little brother is rewarded with a spoonful of humor that gives him a glance at another facet of your songwriting (reminding me of Christine Lavin) and personality. I was pleased to see in an interview that you really do have a precocious little brother. Did he love that song? The repetition at the end makes me think this may have been a lullaby you sang to him when he was younger.

I first heard Kitchell on XM Satellite and every time a song came on, it caught my ear and it would be her! I finally bought it and love it more every time I hear it. Fantastic, lyrical, gorgeous. She's great. Do not believe the review that calls her the worst - she is absolutely THE BEST.

Better Than Others...........2007-03-09

It's true. Now we have a lot of 'pop singing sensations' that tend to sound like weasels being put through a paper shredder. It's true, she does have a very mature voice, but that creates a very classical sound. In addition, Miss Kitchell actually wrote the songs, so you know that when she's singing, there's actually emotion in it; they mean something to her. The songs are very soothing, good to listen to in the car or while falling asleep. This is honestly one of the best CD's I've ever listened too, and I think Sonya Kitchell is well on her way to stardom!

I'm sorry but A. Burke's review is so out of line on this one - calling it bad singing. Are you kidding?!? I don't think so. This girl is so talented and I have a feeling she is going to be very successful. She is an amazing artist. I LOVE her music and I hope she keeps composing as I will definitely be looking for her new albums in the future.

Oh my - where did this young lady learn to sing? It's not music from an "old soul", as another reviewer put it - just bad singing. Ugg. Stay away from this one.

I saw an Austin City Limits live performance of Kathleen that immediately sent me to Amazon to get her album and hear more. Unfortunately, other than a great first two songs the album is fairly forgetable. She can write and sing the hard stuff, yet spends most of the album space in more lala ballad land. These are not bad tunes, just not what make for her best, most compelling work.

Back To Me Has Shown Kathleen Is Only Growing Stronger!.......2006-06-27

Kathleen Edwards has only gotten better in Back To Me, with some brilliant songs. Her lyrics are solid, mature and actually sound genuine coming from her. I feel some singers are pretty fake with what they sing but I do feel Kathleen is honest in her lyrics. Her voice can sometimes make a song feel dull, but at other times she truly draws you in with her singing regardless, yet that would have to be thanks to the strong beats and guitars that back her up on this album. All of her songs though are enjoyable from first to last, and yet a few stick out more than the others:

1) In State- B+- One of the less brilliant songs. I like it, but don't love it.
2) Back To Me- A- It's the song I heard first from her on the radio. I loved it and got me interested in the album.
3) Pink Emerson Radio- B+- Slower, but I like it.
4) Independent Thief- A+- Love it. I love the beat, the way she sings the song, everything. One of her most strongest moments on here to me.
5) Old Tim Sake- A+- Another brilliant moment on this album. This song is very beautiful in how it is done, and the lyrics really hit to your heart. Probably my favorite song here.
6) Summerlong- A- This album is at its best time in the middle of this album, and this is another great song. This song picks up a bit and has a great beat.
7) What Are You Waiting For- A- This song is one of catchiest on here, with some great background music.
8) Away- B+- A very slow, sad song that will pull at your heartstrings.
9) Somewhere Else- B- Meh. Probably, to me, her weakest song on here. It's not bad, but it's nothing remarkable either. All I like is the background music but Kathleen doesn't bring magic to it. It's kind of bland.
10) Copied Keys- A- I love this song because I can really relate to the lyrics. She made the song just right for the lyrics I think.
11) Good Things- B+- Not the best she song she has sung on here, matter of fact this song kind of comes off dull, but actually this song has some of the best lyrics on this album.

This is a pretty strong album. I think Kathleen has made a successful step forward with her music, and I can only see her growing stronger as long as she keeps to an honest road of music, which she is right now. Back To Me will bring her more fans, and I am among that group. Independent Thief, Old Time Sake, Copied Keys and Summerlong truly sealed the deal.

Any artist who lists Tom Petty and Neil Young as her main musical influences has got to be headed in the right direction. While I liked her first CD, This one is much better all around, Great songwriting, The best tracks include "In State", "Independent Thief" and The title track on the more uptempo side. A songwriting style similar to Lucinda Williams. This is one of those CDs that you can listen to and not want to skip over any tracks. One of the best CDs of 2005

In an obvious labor of love, McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including every song, the original orchestrations, and all underscored dialogue. The most significant restoration is the dark choral number "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'," as Show Boat's serious subject matter helped establish its place as the most important turning point in the history of American musical theater. McGlinn also adds an appendix that includes songs cut before opening night and every song subsequently written for the show's many productions, most notably the love duet "I Have the Room Above Her," written for the 1936 film. When PBS showed the 1989 Paper Mill Playhouse production of Showboat, my five year old daughter fell in love with musical theater. To this day we never miss a production of Showboat, West Side Story, Music Man, Oklahoma or the rest of the great American musicals. These 3 discs are the closest you can ever hear to the original in 1927 and the recordings are leaps and bounds above any movie version or revival cast. Listening to Bill or Make Believe you almost want to cry at what Kern and Hammerstein were able to create.

I defy anyone to come up with another Broadway production that has three songs in a row better than Make Believe, Ol' Man River and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (West Side Story's Maria, America and Tonight are the best three in a row of a movie musical) and it's a shame that no movie version of Showboat can compare to this version. The first act is full of songs that are as good as any ever sung on a stage and I can't think of another production with a first act that compete against the big 3 plus Cotton Blossom, Where's The Mate For Me, Life On The Wicked Stage, Till Good Luck Comes My Way, Misry's Comin' Aroun', You are Love, Act One finale and Why Do I Love You?. You just don't want to have the music stop.

If you don't like opera you won't like this version. Sung the way Kern and Hammerstein wrote them, you can't help but feel the operatic nature of these songs. Tough noogies because Showboat is above all an opera disguised as a Broadway play and no sweetening should be allowed.

The four leads are all superb, Frederica von Stade as Nola especially. The booklet contains the complete libretto and allows a different way to appreciate the music.

If you buy just one version of Showboat you need this one. If you have other versions of Showboat you need this one. As a matter of fact, anyone with ears to hear needs this version. A true American treasure.

DON'T DESPAIR. IT'S BEEN REISSUED!!!!!.......2006-11-16

One of the great recordings of musical theatre ever. Although it's no longer available on EMI Angel, it was reissued in October, 2006, as an EMI Classic's "Great Recordings of the Century." It's been "Digitially Remastered at Abbey Road Studios from the Original Masters" and "noise-shaped via the Prism SNS system for optimum sound quality." If ART remastering does for this recording what it has done for other EMI Classics in my library, then it should sound superb. However, I understand the booklet is not as detailed as the one in the original 3-disc release.

I would hope other labels would follow suit and remaster and reissue other examples of classic American musical theater. It would be a pity if our children, grandchildren, and future generations were unable to savor "110 in the Shade" or "Little Mary Sunshine" or . . . . . . . . . (fill in the blanks.)

An American tragedy...........2006-02-06

This is the first of the great American musical plays, and probably remained unchallenged until the mid-1950s when West Side Story appeared. The term "musical comedy" does not apply. The few laugh lines are subsumed by the terrible sense of loss and disaster that work throughout the story. At its core is homelessness, the destruction wrought by racism, bad choices, human weakness, and reconciliation. The cast?--this was one of the few crossover recordings I've ever heard that actually worked. The trio of Jerry Hadley, Frederica von Stade, and Teresa Stratas is a marvel; Stratas in particular seems to have had a patented Dark Cloud that shadowed her. It's perfect for Julie Dozier Laverne. And the late Bruce Hubbard brings a magnificent dignity and voice to Joe--his singing of "Ol' Man River" amy not efface Paul Robeson, but can stand beside it.

I received this item on July 27, 2005. I played it on my portable CD player and found out that Disc 2 of the set was defective. It kept on skipping on my CD player. So, I returned it for a refund.

I own 2 other Bob Wills box sets - Anthology 1935 - 1973, which is a 2 CD set with a lot of good music on it, mostly old. I also have the box set "Encore" that has all Bob's newer stuff from the early 60's (when Tommy Duncan came back) to his recordings in the early 70's before his death (at this time in his career his band cosisted of a lot less members and no horns)both these sets are "pretty" good. But this set from Proper Records "Take me back to Tulsa" is one of the Best deals on the internet today. I paid about 18 bucks for this set "Brand New" and it has four CD's that are loaded with tons of great music going all the way back to when Bob was still playing with Milton Brown (Proper's box set "Milton Brown and his Brownies" is also pretty darn good,but it doesn't have that Wills Western Flair). Bottom line if you are a fan of Western Swing and can't afford at this time to put out about $700.00 for the two Outstanding Bear Family box sets then go for this one, over 100 Great songs you won't be disappointed....the price is right too! "Come in, Tommy...".......2006-01-06

This boxed set is amazing for the sheer volume of wonderful music it proffers at a fraction of what one would expect to pay for it. Concentrating on the early years, it presents Bob Wills at the dawn of his recording career and continues through the height of his creativity. This is the cream of early Bob Wills, and contains about 60% of his very best material (I am long of the opinion that Bob Wills never made a bad record in his life, and he continued to be productive through his so-called "lean years" of the 1950's, 1960's and beyond). But these tracks are the classics that most fans cherish above all.

Tommy Duncan, Wills' favorite featured vocalist, appears here on many sides, including Time Changes Everything (my personal Bob Wills favorite) and many others. Besides the early Columbia sides, there are examples of his Decca years and other smaller labels. A few of my own favorites include My Little Cherokee Maiden (close runner-up to Time Changes Everything as my favorite Bob Wills record) Sunbonnet Sue (recorded with Milton Brown and His Brownies before Bob formed the Playboys) Maiden's Prayer, Steel Guitar Rag, Basin Street Blues, San Antonio Rose, Silver Bells, Lone Star Rag (an overlooked masterpiece, and one of the catchiest instrumental tunes you've ever heard), Take Me Back To Tulsa, Miss Molly, My Confession, Roly Poly, Hawaiian War Chant, Sugar Moon, Bubbles In My Beer, Deep Water, Faded Love (which Bob wrote and Patsy Cline had a monster hit with) and I Laugh When I Think How I Cried Over You (what a great title!).

For anyone who doesn't know, Bob Wills was a fiddle player who played his first professional gig as a young boy, substituting for his father at a barn dance. Although he grew up around Western music, the Wills family lived in a poor area where there were many black families, and very early he was exposed to and grew to love the Blues and other forms of traditional African-American music. Legend has it that he once rode fifty miles on horseback to attend a Bessie Smith recital, and was the only white person in the audience. He was one of the founding members of Milton Brown and His Brownies, the band credited with creating the style of music now known as Western Swing. When he started his own band, the Texas Playboys, he took a cue from Count Basie and included Brass, Horns and rhythm instruments, and if he couldn't claim to actually invent Western Swing, he certainly perfected it. In the 1940's he was one of the highest paid bandleaders in the US.

Bob was most famous for his "calls" or "hollers". When the band got hot, he would frequently holler "Ahhhhh-hahhhh" or prod them along with such exclamations as "Take it away, Leon" or "Here's that old piano pounder". Or, if the band was playing below his expectations, he would shout, "Johnny in key, please" or virtually anything else that came into his mind.

For many years during the height of his popularity, Bob and his music were rejected by the orthodox country music establishment for being too "jazzy" and ignored by the jazz world for being too "hillbilly". Western Swing is a blend of jazz and western music - it is primarily dance music, with a strong emphasis on vocals (like country), but it also includes jazz instruments like saxophone and trumpets. What makes it most unique are instruments that are traditionally associated with country music (like fiddles and steel guitars), being employed in a "swing" or jazz fashion. Any performance by Bob Wills Texas Playboys incorporates spotlight solos, improvisation and other musical trademarks generally associated with jazz. In other words, his band and his music are totally unique.

Fortunately, there was a revival of interest in Bob Wills and his music which started in the 1960's and continues to this day. After his death in 1974, there was an explosion of new Western Swing bands, with young admirers anxious to copy the Bob Wills sound and keep Western Swing alive. Even country music has finally paid him his due, for today Bob Wills is proudly embraced and revered in country circles as a pioneer and a true original. He is now acknowledged as one of the first to incorporate African American rhythm and Jazz into country music, and his influence has been acknowledged by such diverse artists as Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and even Elvis Costello.

If you are not familiar with Bob Wills, you can't go wrong with this set as an introduction, especially at this price.

Some of these songs aren't on any of the other CD's and if they are, they're different versions. A couple you will want to hear if you haven't already are "Fan It" and "Pray for the Lights To Go Out"- MAN, ARE THOSE OLD BUT GOOD!! "Cowboy Stomp" is another one I hadn't heard before that's in this collection. Anybody who loves Bob Wills should have this, it is worth every penny.

Red Hot Jazz Cowboy blues band!.......2005-01-13

Mix two parts twenties jazz, one part blues, one part swing, two parts honky tonk, and one part crooning music and what do you have? Bob Wills and His Texas Playboy Band! I was turned on to this band by their recording of "Too Busy," which sounds like a cross between early fifties rock and roll and dixieland jazz. These guys were hot! Bob Wills and his band were a perfect example of a group of musicians who played live several hours a day, perfecting their craft - not the talentless celebrities of today who rely on tape loops and beat machines. This set is an unbelievable value. You get four cds for 22$! And this isn't filler. Each cd has songs that you will want to download into your ipod. Excellent!

Great music.......2007-04-05

The pipes, like a few other things, are something you either love or hate. If you are not a Scot, they may sound like someone is scalding cats. If you are Scot, or even partly so, they will make your blood boil. This album certanily does that. It has a mix of traditional and more upbeat music. The traditional "Amazing Grace" is fantastic and the last selection is an upbeat Caribbean rendition that is great.

Not just pipes.......2007-02-12

I purchased this CD looking for bagpipe tracks to listen to. The recording of Amazing Grace is flawless, and inspiring. However - much of this CD is the entire band playing more modern music (of course this album was recorded in the 70's). The pipe playing is excellent, but this is not really a bagpipe CD.

Finally Found It!!.......2005-08-03

I have been searching for a CD of this recording for ages! In 1971, when it was originally released, I was 10 years old and couldn't appreciate the album that my brother played endlessly. As I got older I started to miss it. I found a cassette copy several years ago, but am afraid to use it anymore for fear of it breaking. My brother told me he had found a copy of the CD at his local Borders, and since I don't have one in my neighborhood I checked good old Amazon!! I have just ordered and I am looking forward to receiving it. I'm not a music critic, but after hearing many pipe and drum recordings, this has got to be the best I've ever heard.

A thousand horse cavalry charge!.......2005-06-11

I judge bagpipes by Scotland the Brave. This is magnificant; like a thousand horse cavalry charge. The only problem is that, at 45 seconds, it is too short.

It would have been far better if it had been played once on pipes alone and then again with the brass dropped in behind the pipes. A thousand highlanders screaming across the battlefield, followed by the thousand horse cavalry charge. Just thinking about it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand and my blood pressure go through the roof.

This album is magnificent, but it could have been awesome.

Updated Amazing Grace.......2003-05-09

Having reviewed the original "Amazing Grace" recording by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from 1971 it seems that Amazon.com now offers a series of recordings that the bands released in the late 70 and 1980s under the same title. The first half of this CD contains tracks from a 1976 release of the bands entitled "The Lengendary Amazing Grace" In addition to a fine updated version of the now famous tune four years after its original world wide hit, this part of the CD contains some interesting selections for band and pipes. "Una Palma Blanca" is a true example of how the RSDG bands went to great lengths to explore the full combined sound. The regimental band supports the pipes with a variety of modern sounds including an electronic bass guitar which many military bands in fact use for concert purposes today providing as it does a useful Continuo bass line for a military band. "Theme in Glory" and "Turn on the Sun" are additional examples of just how good the RSDG bands had mastered the concept of combing their resources. These are truly exciting pieces to listen too. The regimental band shows its stuff with "Rockout" an arrangement of classic old rock music themes. The pipes and drums provide three medleys and are simply surperb. One can hear that a distinctive change had taken place in the ensemble sound of the pipe band since 1971. The RSDG drummers have incorporated the use of their tenor drums to creat an amazing drummers' accompaniment to the pipes. This innovation would become standard in the piping world, but it owes its origins largely to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards pipes and drums. Listen to how magificent the pipe band sounds when they first enter to the 6/8 medley starting with "Macneils of Ugdale". You won't find a better sound even today. The Retreat medley starting with "Lochanside" is also amazing. Its worth getting the CD just for those tracks as well as the others. Perhaps the most haunting combined tune is an arrangment of Handel's "Largo" with the solo pipes doubling for the voice parts. Truly beautiful and moving.

The second part of the CD contains recordings of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from the later 1970s. The listener will note that there is a subtle, but different recorded sound to the bands. They don't come across quite as clear as in the first 12 tracks on the CD. Again, there is the same rich selection of music with imaginative arrangements and unusual sounds. The regimental band gets highlighted more in these remaining tracks and the same versatility is still there. The "Slave Chorus" from Verdi's "Nabucco Opera" gets an interesting modern treatment. "Moonliner Rock March" is another great arrangement of rock tunes that gets the special Royal Scots Dragoon Guards touch. The pipes and drums are back with several combined medley's as well as two solo displays. The drummers show their stuff in "Drummer's Salute" displaying their modern percussion techniques that are still inspiring today for the pipe band world. All in all a worthy continuation of the "Amazing Grace" tradition that was started in 1971 and carred on since then. It's good to see that some of the many recordings the bands made through the years are now on CD. Enjoy the unique sound of the bands of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards who did a lot to popularize Scottish and military band music in general around the world. Truly a legend of "Amazing Grace"

For this movie about 1930s boxer Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe), director Ron Howard interrupted his longtime collaboration with composer James Horner and teamed up with Thomas Newman. It's a wise decision: Newman has a lighter touch and his somber palette emphasizes the fact that Cinderella Man is more thoughtful drama than mere brawling flick (even a track titled "Pugilism" eschews obvious punchiness in favor of ominous, rolling tribal-like percussion. Elsewhere, "Weehawken Ferry" illustrates Newman's ability to write swelling, majestic music that's not bombastic. Typical of the subdued approach is Paul Giamatti's version of "Londonderry Air," which he delicately whistles. The score is interspersed with a few lovely Depression-era tunes such as Chicago tenor saxist Bud Freeman's "Tillie¹s Downtown Now," Roane's Pennsylvanians' "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky," and especially Eddie Cantor's wonderfully biting "Cheer Up, Smile, Nertz" ("Our judges are queer/Our banks disappear/And all the while they tell us to smiiiiile"). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

The Soundtrack to Cinderella Man is great.......2007-01-11

Cinderella Man is one of my favorite movies of all time. And the soundtrack does not disappoint. They have all of the powerful songs heard on the DVD. It even has the songs that you could barely hear in the movie because they were simply background music to the scenes. For instance, when Mike Wilson and Jim Braddock sit down together after work and have a drink and discuss the troubled times their nation was facing during the depression, you can faintly hear a song called, "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky" by Roane's Pennsylvanians. That song is on here in its entirety.

The other example is found in the scene where Joe Gould is seen driving off after just speaking with Jim about his hopes of getting him another fight after Jim had defeated Corn Griffin. Joe is trying to leave before Mae can see him because he knows she would not approve of his talking with Jim and the potential of another fight for her husband. Anyway, just as he gets in the car, and as he drives off, you can here Bud Freeman's "Tillie's Downtown Now" being played--another great song from that era.

Every sound of Cinderella Man is found on this soundtrack. The lone downside to this CD is that the songs are not found in the order they appear in the movie. The first four songs are in order and the last five or so are in order, and the rest is thrown in the middle. They are all there, but as is typical for most soundtracks, they don't all coincide with the order presented in the picture.

This soundtrack is a terrific purchase for any fan of this movie. You will not be disappointed.

Another good score from Thomas Newman........2006-11-07

Thomas Newman is becoming quite the composer. He has such a unique style, but is able to use it to compliment the movies he scores without the music sounding out of place or out of period. The tracks "Turtle" and "Pugilism" are fun to listen to. The first track is short and yet somehow moving. There are enough songs from the period to lend the right flavor to the soundtrack (including a track of Paul Giamatti whistling "Londonderry Air"). This one's definitely worth having if you're a fan of Thomas Newman.

I suppose this would have been better, like another reviewer said, if some of the tracks had been more than minute-long cuts of the music from Cinderella Man. Still, it's a fantastic soundtrack!--I don't know what "conventional" meant when someone called it that, but if you like sad and somber music, you'll certainly like this. Try it. It's almost better than the movie itself, and the movie was great. After this, I have to hear Thomas Newman's other work.

Why..........2006-07-11

I dearly loved the movie, "Cinderella Man," and the music in it. However, why on earth, on the CD, did they play only a minute, or less, of some of the best music? Like, "Hope of the Irish," I liked that so much, but 52 seconds dosn't do it. In the film it was at least 3 minutes or more. I have decided not to buy the soundtrack simply because of this.

A fairly conventional score for Thomas Newman, but enjoyable nonetheless.......2006-03-25

Cinderella Man is, in a way, a return to conventional scoring for Thomas Newman. For a long while we've heard world instruments and percussion banging it out before stopping to allow beautiful themes to grasp our souls, but in Cinderella Man the effort is more restrained. It is largely a score for piano and strings, and fans of Thomas Newman will have heard the sound before. But, all the same, it is an enjoyable score for Newman fans of both kinds, and while it does take a while to get into a full expression of the story, it is definitely worth the wait.

The piano is used a lot in the score, making appearances across most of the tracks, including the gentle "The Inside Out" or in "Mae", appear with the delicate strings that we have come to expect from Newman. "Pugilism" makes use of pizzicato movements, whereas the two Irish influenced tracks, "Hope of the Irish" and "Turtle", bring back some more unconventional instruments as one would expect. But largely, the score meanders in the background, establishing a delicate tone and texture, but never really taking a forefront. Of course, I must make mention of the wonderful "Weehawken Ferry", which presents a crisp walking movement of strings, similar to what was heard in Shawshank Redemption. However, it is not until the final few tracks that the music finally free's itself from it's subdued nature and reaches out. "Big Right" explodes with blaring french horns and sharp strings, until it finally fades off and allows the highlight track, "Cinderella Man", to come in. This track is Newman at his best, with his typical soaring string arrangement of the main theme introduced in "The Inside Out", before finally reverting back to quiet woodwinds and piano near the end.

Cinderella Man is by no means an innovative or groundbreaking score - it's a fairly conventional drama score. The same adjectives could be applied to the movie as well. Is it worth the pick-up? Definitely, if you are looking for more Newman goodness. However, if you're looking to get into the world of Newman with a more colorful score - try "Angels in America" or "Road to Perdition".

A MUST for any Jeanette fan!.......2006-04-25

This CD is a gem! The songs included on it are beautiful and show off MacDonald's incredible voice. The best part of this CD, however, is the sound quality. Unlike many of her other recordings, and those featuring her with frequent costar Nelson Eddy, the sound on this CD is pristine, and you can barely tell the recordings are 50+ years old!

Jeanette MacDonald Was Unique.......2001-03-12

It really doesn't matter whether or not she could sing; Jeanette MacDonald was unique. On these old recordings, her voice sounds thin and watery, and contemporary tastes do not respond so readily to the sentimentality and predictability of her movies. But she was a gracious lady and glittering presence on the silver screen. These film songs do suggest the excitement she generated when her movies first appeared. And how many truly major singers she inspired! Joan Sutherland recalled meeting MacDonald a few years before her death. Said Sutherland: "I still had stars in my eyes."

An excellent demonstration of Jeanette MacDonald's artistry.......1998-12-18

The highlights of this Jeanette MacDonald CD include her excellent singing of Delibes' "Les Filles de Cadiz," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and the "Jewel Song" from "Faust." A much-underrated artist, MacDonald proves here that she can handle a wide range of music, from concert songs and opera arias to familiar tunes from her operetta films. Particularly fine are her renditions of "Only a Rose," and Herbert's "Romany Life" (in spite of an amateurish male chorus). Highly recommended not only as a tribute to filmdom's first lady of song, but also to listeners who enjoy both opera and musical comedy.
