Tidal is the debut album by Fiona Apple, a New York singer-songwriter-pianist who was 18 years old at the time of its 1996 release. Apple is obviously talented--she has a dark, smoky alto and a knack for an arresting turn of phrase--but she's still several years away from realizing her potential. For every fresh lyric she writes ("Daddy longlegs, I feel that I'm finally growing weary of waiting to be consumed by you"), she provides two examples of embarrassingly precious schoolgirl poetry ("Adagio breezes fill my skin with sudden red," from the same song, "The First Taste"). She also has yet to refine her moody piano chords into actual melodies, though "Shadowboxer" comes close.

A Must Have.......2007-07-05
Fiona Apple is by far one of the most amazing artists of our time. Her 3 CD discography is needed in every music collection.
When it's good, it's violent.......2007-02-09
Lots of missteps here, especially the 'soulful fuzak' approach, and less ear candy than later work, but the key tracks conclusively demonstrate Apple a master of the pissed off / vulnerable dichtomy not seen since Joni Mitchell stopped taking crap from the world. "Sleep To Dream" is as excoriating as it is catchy - no mean feat. Ditto "Criminal." Raw and real - estrogen brutalization. Whatever is happening with the song or the band (yay - trendy chamberlain), Apple's astronomical persona aims unwaiveringly at the bullseye, BANG - bold as Lennox on "Missionary Man." Oh yeh, "Never Is A Promise" is an unqualified art song, complete with string quartet - oblique and visceral. The start of an incredible career.
excelent debut.......2007-01-20
great album... no as complete as her second one "when the pawn" but definitely brought my attention to her awesome singing... "criminal" and "sleep to dream"my favorite songs.. and also the use of a mellotron keyboard stirs up memories of the 70's ... great artist overall...
Excellent.......2006-12-31
Bought this cd site unseen. Heard the voice and the rest is history. Wish there was more material out there - but this is the first and best effort from Fiona. Every song is powerful and soulful that will move you. It is a pitty that there was not a duplicate effort, but this cd is a can't miss!
sultry rock.......2006-11-29
this album is wonderful, it is blues based, with jazzy tunes, yet there is a rock /pop componenet as well. for those of you that love tori amos and the like. This album is a bit mellow and sad though. no real fast songs to groove to.

While Fletcher Henderson made the bulk of his important recordings for Columbia, gathered on A Study in Frustration, he also recorded some significant music for the Decca label, recording as both the Connie's Inn Orchestra and under his own name. There are two sessions from 1931 and three from 1934,and they all show Henderson's group as the prototype of the big swing bands. The eight tracks from 1931 are particularly interesting for their demonstration of the Henderson band's increasing ability to actually "swing," largely through the playing of drummer Walter Johnson and John Kirby's remarkably fluid tuba work. The band includes trumpeter Rex Stewart and tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, whose dominant presence is apparent in the solo on "House of David Blues." There are 12 tracks from 1934 and there's increasing sophistication in the arrangements by Benny Carter, Henderson, and his brother Horace. Horace's aggressive arrangement of Fletcher's "Hotter than Hell" is the highlight, but there's always plenty of spirit from the band, which includes trumpeter Red Allen, clarinetist Buster Bailey, and a young Ben Webster striving to fill Hawkins's absence. --Stuart Broomer

------------------------------------------------------------.......2004-12-13
Fletcher Henderson led one of the hottest bands of the 1931-34 period. While most of his competitors were playing society music or novelty songs, Henderson was putting out hotdance music, with jazz content and the music swung hard. A great cd that features the early 30's sides, and features some fine sidemen such as Coleman Hawkins and Red Allen. Icludes some jazz classics such as Hotter Then 'Ell, Radio Rhythm, and Wrappin it up. Exellent introduction to Henderson's hot brand of early swing, mostly due to Benny Carter's innovating arrnagements.
The "Toscanini" of Big Band jazz in great sound.......2000-02-20
Wow is this an amazing album. First off, the sound is really a revelation. The engineers have allowed all the sound on the 78s to come through, without destroying its clarity through bad noise reduction decisions. The music just jumps right out at you. Second, the music is really a revelation. The instrumental complexity of Fletcher Henderson's band, and its superb musicality and execution, are something I've not heard elsewhere. You never know what novel musical realm is coming next on these tracks---riffs, solos, themes, counter themes, all with sudden and stunning dynamics changes. Henderson is the guy who invented the Big Band in the 1920s. He and King Oliver were the first two jazz "uper groups" These recordings are vintage 1931-1934, and you can hear the transition here from 2-count style '20s jazz to 4-count Swing, from tuba bass to string bass. There are many great tracks for Lindy Hopping on this CD. Don't believe the lore that Lindy Hop music is slow Swing --- these dance tracks, including "he Lindy Glide"and "ug Cutter's Swing" all range from 200 to 300 beats per minute.

Customer Reviews:
No words can describe..........2006-02-15
I'm only a high school band student, so my knowledge of composers is somewhat limited. However, whenever my band director introduced Chaos Theory for our Marching performace my sophomore year, and my Senior year [this year] Equus by Whitacre [which sadly is not on this recording], I was AMAZED by these composers. The creativity, the personality, the EVERYTHING about the music of these writers is amazing - I don't know what you would like, but I liked this kind of random creativity, it's a good change.
Band Music of the 21st century.......2004-05-11
Do you like the classic band sound? Do you play Sousa marches on your CD player 24 hours a day? Can't get enough of those arrangements of movie music and orchestral standards? If this is the case then this is NOT the album for you. These 4 composers make it a point not to do anything of that sort. Their stated goal is "to create music for the wind ensemble medium not bound by traditional thought or idiomatic cliché" and, if this is truly the case, then I think they (and the superb UNLV Wind Orchestra) have suceeded in creating something that every kind of music fan will find appealing.
If you know Eric Whitacre's choral works, then you will be pleasantly surprised and deeply moved by his wind arrangement of 'Cloudburst.' You'll also laugh until you cry during 'Godzilla Eats Las Vegas' in proof positive that Whitacre (and the rest of BCM) have a wicked sense of humor.
Jonathan Newman's 'Uncle Sid' and 'OK Feel Good' are 2 other standouts for humor. The first is a twisted version of 'Hava Nagila' and if the second one doesn't bring a smile to your face at a certain point towards the end, then you have no soul.
Steven Bryant gets a bit more contemplative during his beautiful 'the logic of all my dreams.' He gets so much "lushness" (if that's a word) into the orchestration that you'll swear you hear strings.
At first glance, James Bonney doesn't strike one as a stereotypical composer in the classical sense. But he proves it nonetheless with his innovative 'Chaos Theory.' Who would ever think of putting a solo electric guitar with an ensemble known for 'Stars and Stripes Forever'? A member of BCM International...that's who!

Album Description
A CD of songs that kids AND their parents love! Written by songwriter Paul Reisler with 600 elementary school kids in rural Virginia, and recorded by over 30 professional artists (some internationally-known), all proceeds will fund music programs in the county. The songs are enchantingly diverse, musically superlative, and possess that elusive quality that all artists and producers hope for but rarely achieve: magic. Funny, fresh, and wacky.
Customer Reviews:
Sperryville's hottest talents!.......2003-05-02
This album is wonderful and so much fun at any age. It is also a really great example of community coming together and utilizing its many creative talents. Buy it!
Great tunes that my kids & I all love!.......2002-07-01
My 2-year-old son, my neighbor's 6-year-old daughter and my 9-year-old stepson all LOVE this CD! The older kids play some of the songs over and over, and my 2-year-old just loves to bounce up and down on his bed listening to the CD. I can't believe kids wrote these songs, but on the other hand that may be why they're so fun for kids to listen to. The production is just stellar.
(POSSIBLY BIASED)An excellent piece of community work........2002-05-25
I am Brian "BJ" Ross. I am really pleased with how well this CD turned out. One cool thing about this CD is that I am on it. I love it. The music is of a huge variety of genres. My particular favorite song on the CD is "We Lost the Fight Song" It has catchy words, and the High-School band did a beyond-excellent job on the instruments. Virtually everything about this CD blew me away.I know most of the musicians, and I (as I mentioned earlier) sing various parts of this CD. I hope (1) everybody loves this CD, and (2) more communities collaborate, in great projects like that. WARNING: 4/19 of the songs are bluegrass. I think that should be known by any potential buyers who don't like bluegrass.
great album for parents and kids.......2001-12-15
I have found in this Tidal Wave of Song a cd of songs that are my songs, too. Kids and adults - we are all singing together. I wish more music - all music will be like this - full of spirit that knows no limits of age or imagination.
Wow! What a blast!!.......2001-12-12
This amazing kids'CD covers so many great styles of music, from electronica to folk to jazz. The songs are so creative and catchy, you'll find yourself singing things like "I like to eat purple pickled peppers" in no time at all. I know its supposed to be for kids, but I'm 33 and its a hit with me too!

Album Description
For the first time ever, this classic Zeitlin recording is now available on CD, remastered in 24 bit from the original analog tapes. This album features an outstanding complement of sidemen turning in stellar performances. A must have for any fan of Zeitlin, Abercrombie, or Haden.
Customer Reviews:
Great music!.......2006-06-28
In Denmark, where this reviewer is from, most people are familiar with names like John Abercrombie and Charlie Haden, considered of course that they are interested in jazz and related music, but not many have heard of Denny Zeitlin, and that's a real pity. Because this guy can really play and is what I would term a real pianist with a capital "P". Astonishing technique and control combined with great imagination, chord voicings and musicianship. This particular album is recorded in Chick Corea's Mad Hatter Studio and nicely produced by Lee Townsend. The music here really gels and Abercrombie plays his best greatly backed by Haden and drummer Peter Donald. The Style on the album varies a bit and where as the first and fourth track has a genuine fusion quality to it (I'm not scared of the word fusion) the remaining tunes are more in a jazz vein. But tunes are really melodic with a good atmosphere and never trivial. All compositions are by Zeitlin except for two tracks and moods vary from powerful to poetic and all the way through this album you'll find a wonderful interaction among the players. Music lovers should check this out - you wouldn't get disappointed.
