Carole King was famous as a writer of girl-group hits in the '60s. In 1971, she became more famous. That's the year Tapestry became one of the biggest-selling LPs of all time. It's easy to hear why--the music is loose, earthy, L.A. session-pop. King is casual, intimate, and tough; she covers all the emotional ground of the post-liberated woman with ease. She brings adult nuance to "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" and comes up with hits ("It's Too Late," "I Feel the Earth Move") whose white-soul realism and maturity put pop hits to shame. --Steve Tignor --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, Complex, and Brilliant.......2007-07-26

Carole King is more than just the voice of a generation. She is a voice in the wilderness of modern music. She does not draw attention to herself, but attention to every single person who listens to the albulm. This is a personal album in so many ways. Carole King does not have the attitude that most of the artists of her generation have and that is why this collection of songs will be around for many many more years.

5 out of 5 stars Her best.......2007-06-30

I owned this album on vinyl and then on cassette. It is a good quality CD that once again allows me to return to the yesterdays when I first heard of Smack Water Jack and felt the earth move under my feet. I know I'm biased but if these songs came out today, I think they still would climb high on the charts. If you want a sample of one of the greatest songwriters of her generation performing her own hits, you cannot go wrong with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Classics get to be classics...............................2007-06-11

........for a reason. This is generally considered to be one of the very greatest albums ever. It is. Carole King wrote and sang the songs of my generation. She and Carly Simon made the music that pretty much defines the baby-boomer years. There is little point in discussing individual songs...we've all felt the earth move, followed her lead, and been glad that she sings of being our friend. If ever a girl was a natural woman...she is, indeed, a beautiful tapestry.

The sound and the songs remain fresh and new, and the pure joy as great as ever. There are very few albums that everybody really ought to have....this one heads the list.

One of the most underappreciated releases of 1999, Heaven & Earth features some of the most exciting and creative female talent in the Christian music world. Michelle Tumes's worshipful ballad "For the Glory of Your Name" leads off the release, and could be one of her better recording efforts. Producer John Hartley, who wrote and managed this pleasing project, magically segues Tumes's wistful number into Jennifer Knapp's Celtic-oriented "Whisper My Name." It's a device tastefully used throughout as artists Nichole Nordeman, Margaret Becker, and Rebecca St. James blend one into the other. The seamless threading of Tumes's "My Dwelling Place" into St. James's "River of Life" explains why these singers are so well drawn together. Although stylistically different, each woman approaches the music in a spirit of worship. This is so much more than a collection: it's truly a well-woven celebration of talent. --Michael Lyttle

4 out of 5 stars Great Worship Project, But I Have Some Disappointment.......2007-03-12

This project says on the back of the CD, "Some of Christian music's most popular female voices join together in this collection of contemporary worship songs." This project is what I expected "Women of Faith" to be, a combination of known artists.

On the positive side, I will say that this is a nice worship album. There are good songs on the tape, soothing, and well written. My favorites were "For The Glory Of Your Name", "Whisper My Name", "River Of Life", "Heaven & Earth", and "Christ Before Me".

On the negative side, I think the women were under-used. I was hoping, as a new comer to Michelle Tumes and Jennifer Knapp, to get a feel for their music, but I didn't. The above quote is correct that these women are popular for their vocals, but what is ignored is that these women are also gifted songwriters in their own right, which has been passed by. The producer, John Hartley, did the lion's share of the composing. Rebecca St. James was a co-writer on the first song she sang, "River Of Life", and Margaret Becker helped with "In Your Love" (sung by Nichole Nordeman), but this is not a good representation of these ladies' talents.

If you like female vocalists and want a beautiful worship project, then buy this project, don't pass go, don't collect $200. However, if you are considering this as a fan of one of the singers or are wanting to become more familiar with some of their music, this is not the project to get.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Christian Music Collection.......2006-05-05

One of the pitfalls of buying collections of songs like Heaven & Earth is that you always anticipate the CD will have either one or two songs that you like, and will dislike the rest, or will be great except for one or two songs that you realize dislike.

But on Heaven and Earth, unlike any other Christian music compilation that I have heard or own, has a group of songs that are uniformly entertaining and uplifting. No fluff. No filler to stick between one good song and the next. All of the songs on this CD are solid. A lot of that is because of the great singers that participated, representing some of the best in Christian music - Rebecca St. James, Michelle Tumes, Margaret Becker, Jennifer Knapp, and Nichole Nordeman. Particular standouts include "For The Glory of Your Name" by Tumes, "In Your Love" by Nordeman, "Jesus Hail The Lamb" by Becker, and "River of Life" by St. James, although again, all of the songs on this CD are great. This CD is a must-have for Christian music lovers.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-12-11

Nichole Nordeman and Jennifer Knapp are two of my favourite female Christian artists - and it was their involvement in this album that inspired me to purchase it. From the very first listen I was disappointed at the lack of depth in both the music and the lyrics. The music lacks solidity, the lyrics are somewhat predictable and lack the depth that I would usually associate with Nichole and Jennifer's own music. I look forward to more albums from Nichole and Jennifer, but I will be more careful about compilations such as this in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Spirit Annointed, Delivered by Angelic voices to Us.......2004-06-24

We all have confusion in our lives. It can be hard sometimes. But God is always there. A beloved friend and brother in Christ whom I love told me once, "Seek His Face." He's right. What helps me most in my life is knowing and loving God. I was doing some dishes and the urge to listen to this cd I've had for years hit me so strongly that I could do nothing but comply. "Christ Before Me" was the first song the Spirit led me to, a favorite of my heart and I was lost in adoring praise and joy of Christ being all about me. But oh, "As We Wait" as I listen to yet again is what I want to write the lyrics to share:
"Hear as we call for Your Spirit, Hear as we call upon Your name. Breathe on us, O Lord. Come to us as we wait. (We WILL wait.) Almighty ONE, Our strength and song, our God forever. Our King and Christ, Our hope in life, Our God forever. Come."
The beautiful, uplifting and annointed voices of Michelle Tumes, Jennifer Knapp, Nichole Nordeman, Rebecca St. James, and Margaret Becker--all glorious to listen to over and over [and most if not all, have their own solo recordings,] but here is the best place to start and I whole heartedly recommend you buy this and be uplifted in who you really are in Christ. One more thing, I was listening to Chris Rea before this. And now as I embrace the golden, humble angel, Nichole, (probably my favorite soloist) singing "In Your Love" and I am reminded that no matter how long it takes, if even my whole life, I WILL wait. The answers will all come with time for me, and most certainly for you as well. May the Peace of Christ be with you, my friend. ONE.
Soar in o8E with me...

5 out of 5 stars More like 10 stars!.......2003-12-13

This is an awesome album! I don't know how these women were selected to sing the songs, but whoever picked them knew what they were doing. Not one bad track on the album! The singing, music, arrangments are beautiful and truly inspired. I highly recommend this album.

Playwright Tony Kushner adapted his sprawling meditation on the AIDS epidemic of the 80's into an equally epic, Mike Nichols-directed HBO miniseries. But while Thomas Newman's score spans that dramatic landscape with rich stylistic diversity, the young champion of the daunting Newman family musical tradition (his father was Fox legend Alfred; his brother fellow film scorer David; his cousin songwriter/composer Randy) never lets musical bombast get in the way of compelling emotional introspection. Anchored by a delicate wind and string-driven main theme that's as mature as it is bittersweet, Newman proceeds to explore some of the same adventurous, rhythmically restless soundscapes that characterized his work on Erin Brockovich and American Beauty. But that typically moody experimentalism is leavened elsewhere by moments of neo-baroque choral exultation, smokey 30's jazz (courtesy of George Lewis and his Ragtime Band and Duke Ellington) and even flashes of gospel and orchestral post-modernism, all of it served up with a masterful sense of irony-free restraint that's become one of the composer's most refreshing hallmarks. It's easily one of Newman's -- and 2003's -- most accomplished and satisfying film scores. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Some of his best work.......2007-06-12

Most of us know Thomas Newman for his work on his more famous films like American Beauty, Shawshank Redemption, Scent of a Woman and Meet Joe Black, but this soundtrack to the HBO film is right up there with his best pieces of work. The whole album goes through various feelings, shades and emotions, the best tracks for me being Mauve Antarctica and Tropopause. If you're a Thomas Newman fan then you need this in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-01

There are not enough stars on the selection for me to say how good this CD is! It is so beautiful and like classical music. I listen to it all the time!

5 out of 5 stars The Celestial Xpression of Thomas Newman.......2005-08-31

...well, to only write a review is not enough to describe the impressive sound in this record. it is necessary to listen to it. Thomas do not scrimp in efforts to assemble this wonderful musical work. in fact, each one of the melodys, agreed, and instruments (mainly those of wind and strings) even are perfectly connected and performed in litle some more of 70 minutes of music. Transitions from the quietness of a melody to the loudest human chorus, may be hear is this soundtrack (tipically from the original Serie, that I have too in DVD). But everything is not perfect. Must be had included the Henry Mancini song: "Moon River" contained in one of the most sentimental scenes in the film/serie (that i think at least). In a plus, if you are an lover of this kind of productions, it does not have to lack in its collection the "Angels in America Soundtrack". Buy and enjoy it..!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing work.......2004-11-28

After working in film scoring for the past decade, Thomas Newman has finally achieved his masterwork with the soundtrack to "Angels in America." It is a culmination of the different techniques and themes he has worked on in the past, along with a completely new orchestral sound that perfectly underlies the depth and scope of the film. It is a very rare score in that it conveys all the happiness, pain, pessimism and hope that Kushner's work is all about, simply through the nuanced way Newman has written and arranged it. It is an incredibly entertaining score that stands well on its own. A must for any fans of Newman or the film.

Amazon.com

If anyone could corner the millennium, Disney could. In presenting the theme music to its millennium celebration at Epcot Center in Florida, the megacorporation attempts a grand, musical year-2000 salute. Naturally, World Millennium Celebration weaves plenty of fiery brass, warm sting passages, stirring voices, and a mix of space romance and Earth adventure into the fabric of this fantasy work. Executive Music Producer Steve Skorija's task seems to be providing a backdrop for live performance, a scrim to unfurl behind the spectacle. And in doing so, the themes "Reflections of Earth," "We Go On," "Tapestry of Nations," "Promise," and "Celebrate the Future Hand in Hand" (complete as a gospel version as well) have an "Up with People" undercurrent that is ambiguous even as it is mildly diverting. On those merits, Millennium Celebration succeeds as a score. But for sheer entertainment value, the CD needs to give us more of the legendary mouse's magic and less of its roar. --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Disneys EPCOT album.......2007-06-09

While at WDW I purchased this album, best soundtrack from a parade ever. Just about wore it out so I purchsed another from Amazon, best price around. The memories remembered while listening to this CD are priceless and now with the retiring of this parade in WDW, this CD keeps the magic alive.

5 out of 5 stars Among Disney's Elite.......2007-05-19

A fantasmic album! Disney is at the top of its game with this wonderful musical piece. Not only is 'Reflections of Earth' reason alone to buy this CD, The 'Tapestry of Nations' is one of the best songs I've ever heard. When it ends after 23 minutes, you can't believe that it's already over. I had the opportunity to see this live when I visited Epcot in 2000 and it was a fantastic show! As soon as I heard it, I had to buy the CD, and I'm glad I did. I highly recommend this to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Magic.......2007-02-21

Gavin Greenaway has done a magnificent job with this arrangement and it feels like my heart skips a beat each time I listen to "Reflections of Earth." My high school marching band performed a version of Millenium Celebration, so I have a special connection with this music. I was thriled when I was finally able to get my hands on the audio portion of this. After listening to the album, I only wish I could have been able to experience this at Epcot in 2000. I highly recommend this album to anyone who has a taste for classical music!

5 out of 5 stars memorable.......2007-01-28

After having blown off the carribean isle of Nevus by hurricaine Lenny late 1999, my family and I had ventured to Disney world. What a fortunate experience was to be had...the millenium was rapidly approaching and Disney/ EPCOT had this show, "Millenium Celebration". My kids were younger back then and we all witnessed it. The music, the parade, and the atmosphere were electrifying. It was almost a religious experience without sounding corny. "Reflections of Earth", "We Go On" and "Tapestry of Nations" gave hope, inspiration, and wonder. If the whole world had seen this show, the world would be a much better place...

5 out of 5 stars Superb work by Galvin and Disney.......2006-11-30

Having been to Epcot, and seen the Tapestry of Nations live, with this Soundtrack, is a memory never to be forgotten. I was recently married this past October, and my soon to be wife and I picked the song "We go on" as her entrance theme. After the ceremony, the song "Promise" was played. I can not tell you the compliments we received over those two songs. we still have people ask us where that music came from... Our thanks to Gavin Greenaway. I fully expect to hear those songs at weddings for years to come.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly predictable, but worth an occasional spin........2006-11-12

I've got it on now, and I've been listening to the original "Tapestry" re-release recently (fantastic!), so here's my streaming thoughts.

(Some explanation of my grading. I believe that if you're going to do a cover, you have to bring something to the party to make it an interesting version and in some way better than the original. Note for note copies are worthless. Did you ever hear Poison's cover of Loggins and Messina's "Your Mama Don't Dance"? This to me is the worst cover of all time. They do nothing new, except smooth over any actual articulation of the lyrics, and they don't even bring the high heat. Frankly, if you can't rock harder than Kenny Loggins, then for God's sake, DO NOT COVER HIS SONGS! Please. This is not a high bar. Bottom line... three stars on my scale means "worth listening to" and five means "You just have to hear this.")

I Feel the Earth Move - OK. At least stylistically different than the original. Finishes strong with a gospel rave up. Three stars.

So Far Away - Exactly what you'd expect from Rod Stewart at this point. I don't mean that as good or bad... just setting your expectations. Nothing special added, I guess that's my point. Two stars for my taste.

It's Too Late - I don't mind Amy Grant's basic voice. But I think of it as plain vanilla and conspicuous phrasing choices. The little baby growl on soft lines is Britney Spears' only trick. The way she sings "It's Too Late Baby" is so very Amy. Another predictable rendition. Ahh, just two stars.

Home Again - OK, clearly my familiarity with the artists colors my opinions of "worth hearing" on this album. I don't know who Curtis Stigers is, and so I think this version is three stars. But if I was unimpressed over time, I'd think the sax and guitar lines are fairly cliche'.

Beautiful - Well then again, I'm no Richard Marx fan, but the slow opening before the power schmaltz isn't so bad. Since the original is sounding a little dated stylistically at this point, I'll give this one three stars. Band and production are solid. Feels uplifting as it should.

Way Over Yonder - Familiarity thing. If this sounds like every one of Blessid Union of Souls' records, then it's nothing special. But I like the singing, and the harmonica. And the pacing helps the soulfulness. Three stars.

You've Got a Friend - Boy, it's nice to have some beautiful big black voices doing this song. Aretha's "thing" doesn't get old or shlocky, it's something to be treasured. Style of this song has changed substantially. Very tasteful instrumentation with the keys and some light percussion. Harmonies worth replaying on the bridge. Ooh, now they're doing it on the next verse! Me likey. Four stars.

Where You Lead - Nice band, Faith. Guitar leads in nice, and the bass drives the band. Nothing too over the top, just right on the money. Faith's got a nice voice. Three stars. Maybe a three plus, if I gave those.

Will You Love Me Tomorrow - Heavily-produced Bee Gees, but that's OK. It works for them. This is what covers are for... focusing on the cover band's strengths and getting away from the trademarks of the original. It's only weak when the band doesn't have much in the way of strength to lean on. Three stars.

Smackwater Jack - Nice! Soulful groove added... nice harmonies, fine driving bass. You believe the line "shut down the congregation" with this band a little more than Carole herself. Well remember this was the breakout album of a woman who had previously written for others. When did the Manhattan Transfer get so much less white? Love the "Shotgun" outro. Four stars.

Tapestry - Boy, I'm liking the bass on this one too. I think this must be a commentary on how often I've been listening to Harmon Kardon PC speakers instead of my big Polk Audio 10's recently. But I think this is a tasty, full version too. CK's version had a certain melancholy imbued in the melody, and it's not lost here, just maybe a little different. Four stars.

Natural Woman - All Celine, right down to that French Canadian prounounciation of "you." Oh joy, here comes the screaming. Protect the dogs. Would you rather have Aretha or Celine singing this to you? No contest. Sit down Celine, and tap into those chill pills. Two stars.

Overall, the album is fine if you don't want much more than these people doing what they do on these songs. There isn't much "can't miss" on it, and only a handful of fours I would bother to burn to the iPod.

4 out of 5 stars It’s pretty darn hard to improve on a classic.......2006-03-05

One of the best albums of the ‘70s, redone by some of the best talents in the business. It’s pretty darn hard to improve on a classic, but Rod Stewart, Aretha Franklin, Amy Grant, Richard Marx, Celine Dion, the Bee Gees and Bebe and Cece Winans, among others certainly give it their best shot.

Rod Stewart singing “So Far Away” is a classic by itself, but also look for Richard Marx’ version of “Beautiful”; Bebe and Cece Winans (with Aretha Franklin) putting a world of soul into “You've Got A Friend”; Faith Hill’s “Where You Lead” and the Bee Gees’ “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?”. The Manhattan Transfer also perform a great “Smackwater Jack”.

Not quite the original, but a very reasonable facsimile thereof

1 out of 5 stars This album would have been better titled "Travesty"..........2005-05-31

This is a horrible tribute to arguably the best singer/songwriter album ever created, Carole King's Tapestry. Opening with a hip-hop version of "I Feel the Earth Move" and finishing with Celine Dion butchering "Natural Woman", this album would have been better titled "Travesty".

Other mediocre artists destroying otherwise great songs include Amy Grant, Richard Marx, Curtis Stigers, Faith Hill, The Bee Gees, Manhattan Transfer, etc. etc. Even Aretha Franklin ruins "You've Got a Friend", over-singing in a Patti Labelle kind of way. The only song here that I can bear to listen to is Rod Stewart's passable version of "So Far Away". Absolutely horrendous!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent covers!.......2005-04-05

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the release of Carole King's most popular album to date,TAPESTRY,various artists such as the Bee Gees,Rod Stewart,Amy Grant and Celine Dion put out their own recordings of the TAPESTRY tracks. Gloria Estefan recorded IT'S TOO LATE for her 1994 album HOLD ME THRILL ME KISS ME,which is an all-cover album also. Grant took the liberty of covering ITL for this album. The Bee Gees, who are legendary songwriters themselves, cover WILL YOU LOVE ME TOMORROW?. The hit song, written by King and her former husband Gerry Goffin, was a hit for the Shirelles in 1960,eleven years before the release of TAPESTRY. Even the late Laura Branigan covered the song for her 1984 album SELF CONTROL. Stewart's cover of SO FAR AWAY later appeared on his 1996 album IF WE FALL IN LOVE TONIGHT. Dion covers (YOU MAKE ME FEEL)LIKE A NATURAL WOMAN which was first a hit for Aretha Franklin in 1967. The song even was heard in one or two brassiere commercials! The other covers are excellent.

2 out of 5 stars Overblown and overproduced.......2004-04-09

I'm a huge fan of the original. One of the key reasons is the simplicity, approachability and humanity of the album and King as a performer.

The "tributes" are a mess, for the most part. I liked the second half of the CD best, but if I had to buy one of the two, I'd spend the money on a fresh copy of the original.

4 out of 5 stars Acoustic Highway reissue is Original Version.......2006-07-12

The EMI/UA reissue (E2-53928)of Tapestry with the Acoustic Highway theme and cover art (the original album cover is a small inset) has the original 2:50 recording of Castles In The Air, and I assume the rest of the album.

3 out of 5 stars Has its moments, but is essentially a folk album.......2005-10-25

Some editions of this album (which is his first album) have had the song "Castles in the air" replaced with the 1981 remix. MY copy has the original 2.50 minute version which is completely different to the 1981 version ... but that doesnt mean it is a better version. McLean has admitted his dislike for the original version and that is why it is difficult to locate. The remix was released as a sucessful single in 1981 and is brilliant. It is the version you are likely to find on any of his countless compilations.

Tapestry is generally a folk album and can be a bit hard to take at first. It is not traditional McLean, if you want that, go for the "American Pie" album. Nevertheless, there are some treasures on here to please the fans, including the classic "And I LOve You So" and "If we Try". Both of these songs have been covered by artists such as Bobby Goldsboro and Olivia Newton-John.

Overall, "Tapestry" is a snapshot of a young Don McLean starting out. The liner notes include an interesting perception on the young songwriter.

4 out of 5 stars this version of tapestry not "original".......2003-09-05

Great album in its original form, but this is not the original
version. For example, the original, released by Mediarts in
1970 has the best version of "Castles In The Air " which was
faster ( running time 2:50 )and featured great finger-picking
and singing. Don Mclean did not like the version, and the
slower version, complete with awful strings and drums has taken
it's place on many of his " best of " recordings. I believe
the wonderful song " No Reason For Your Dreams " has been
tampered with also. I know you can get the original version
on vinyl, and EMI Records boasts you can find it in their
"legendary artists series ", but I have not seen it.
Bottom line : wonderful album if you can get the actual
original version. Let the buyer beware : I just paid $20
for the 'ORIGINAL RECORDING FROM MASTER COPY 'and it is
not the original album. These record companies need to stop
remastering these gems unless they can stick to the ORIGINAL
      format.

      3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2003-08-28

General Store is a top song the rest are average.
Nowhere near as good as American Pie album.

5 out of 5 stars Bang on target... A must have record!.......2001-08-19

Do you like folk?... if you do, you gonna love this record... if you don't, i'm sure you gonna love it anyway (but you may give it a little more time).

Listen to his warm and clear voice, the way he play his guitar, and the way he build the language that he used in his songs, like a poet.

Thank you Don McLean, for this little, but important part of my life. I play guitar myself, and some times when it sounds bad and i lost my feelin for playing, I use this record to feel right again.

Bye it! a piece of harmony, a piece of america, a piece of my life.

      Album Description

"Tapestry", the explosive debut release from the L.A.-based band MOJO is sure to excite fans of intense, melodic instrumental rock fusion! This trailblazing power trio features Kofi Baker (son of drumming legend, Ginger Baker), guitarist Brett Garsed (Nelson, John Farnham and Garsed & Helmerich) and bassist Ricc Fierabracci (Frank Gambale, Steve Smith, Andy Summers and Yanni). Tapestry combines well crafted original songs with spirited improvisation and interplay captured in a "live in the studio" context.

Kofi Baker establishes a solid presence throughout the record with his use of polyrhythmic textures and incredible technique. Baker anchors the rhythm section while making strong individual percussive statements in each tune. He is a drumming force to be reckoned with and continues the journey to creativity in the spirit of his father's work with Cream. The phenomenal Brett Garsed shines on every track. His fluid style is distinct and recognizable. Comfortable and assured, Garsed knows when to lay back and when to assault, demonstrating his maturity and position as a first-rate guitarist. Ricc Fierabracci's compelling bass playing stands out in this musical showcase built to display his unique approach and melodic technique. He ties it all together while making the bass sing.

All three musicians combine to create a rich musical landscape while redefining the word "virtuoso." Prepare to be fully engaged and captivated.

5 out of 5 stars One Very Tight Power Trio.......2006-03-26

I totally agree with Mark V. As you listen to this record you will think your ears are playing tricks on you. This is a very tight power trio into rock/jazz fusion and the production values are excellent. Brett Garsted is one mean guitar player and extremely versatile. On this record he reminds me of the famous jazz guitarist Larry Coryell while on "Big Sky" he takes a more rock approach, ala Joe Satriani. Buy this CD, you will have no regrets.

5 out of 5 stars Cream of the Crop.......2005-06-15

When I first played this CD I almost pulled my car over to the side of the road because I completely lost my concentation. I actually started laughing because I could not believe what I was hearing. Absolutely flawless solos and improvisations from some ot the best musicians I have ever heard. These guys are absolutely at the top of their game. If you're into hard rock/jazz/prog/fusion you will be absolutely floored by this CD. Baker does his daddy proud on this one...
