Although reggae's religious overtones are often overshadowed by the music's ties to ganja and the hippie movement, there are some socially active or religious leaning artists out there. One of the newest comes in the unlikely figure of a young Hasidic Jew named Matisyahu. Singing with a slight ghetto patois, in Yiddish, and even displaying considerable beat-box skills, the New Yorker is at his best when he works himself into fits of righteous indignation and Old Testament fervor (the limits of his vocal range are laid bare when he croons on ballads). The lean three-piece band on this live recording, his second album, is aerodynamic and flexible, able to do the slow reggae groove or rock out with ferocity. After 12 tracks of stripped-down reggae, however, the music tends to blend into one long groove. Nonetheless, there is an undeniable urgency in this live recording that comes through loud and clear, making it a live document of note by one of reggae's most interesting new figures. --Tad Hendrickson

4 out of 5 stars This guy is the real deal.......2006-05-01

I bought this disk simply on word of mouth, I am quite satisfied with my purchase.

Matisyahu is a soulful reggae performer with deep meaning behind his songs. While much has been made of his orthodox Jewish background, and his music is spiritual...there is no holding back or conservatism in the music. While his voice is somewhat lacking in depth he has broad range from scat to soliloquy to melody, range he sings with emotion, heart, balls, what ever you want to call it...he puts himself out there and that is what you want from reggae.

The band does not dominate the music but the more you listen the more you realize their unique vitality. They are every bit as good as he and perhaps its the singer and the band together synergistically make a great album, the sum which is better then the two parts.

In review, this is great reggae and I look forward to buying more albums by Matisyahu.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Star Stubb.......2006-04-10

Heard alot about him before i checked out his cds and saw him perform live on Jimmy Kimmel. He performed "King Without a Crown", and i def. dug that song first time i heard it. I also liked Warrior... but i have to say Matisyahu doing a beatbox is awesome!! I'd love to see him go up against Rahzel or Kenny Muhamed for a beatbox battle... listen to the song beatbox on this cd... i know it's gonna be a 30 sec sample... but see if you can get the whole song somewhere... or in a store... Beatbox is def. worth the listen... he can go slow, medium speed, and crazy insane fast doin beatbox...The cd is pretty good. I'm going to check out more stuff by him.

5 out of 5 stars This Ablum Blew My Mind Away.......2006-02-05

I registered just to right this review. I normally am not into reggae but, this album rocked my consciousness. I'm normally into indie rock and indie hip-hop. Yet I connected with this album in a way that is truly unique. The album is a mix of classic reggae, dancehall and hip-hop flow that touched my essence in way I would have never expected.
The backing band is phenomenal. I would have liked the grooves and melodies they dropped with out the outstanding styling of the front man. There is really nothing out right now to compare this album to. The spirituality expressed within is accessible by people of any denomination or lack of one. The album is a must listen and have to anyone who truly requires originality, sincerity, and honesty in the music they listen to.

5 out of 5 stars This album is intense!.......2006-01-20

Every song on this CD is mind blowing. Matisyahu deliveres so much positive energy it makes my spine tingle. Evra ting gwanna be iree. Ya be jammin to da riddim of creation. Love vibration.

5 out of 5 stars Close your eyes and just listen!.......2006-01-10

Matisyahu puts reggae where it was intended to be. Thoughtful lyrics, esoteric short-cut rhymes, and a lot of passion. Music with a message, what a concept! I have not heard an album like this since early Marley or Burning Spear. If you like reggae, spiritualy elevated music while sitting or even dancing, this is your album.
