You don't have to have a sister to score a hit on the pop charts, but sometimes it sure does help. At a time when the Simpson, Spears, Duff, and Lohan girls are steadily oozing sisterly love across teen magazine spreads and whatever other medium will have them, sending a pair of tight-harmonizing teen queens into the studio to take on the world together makes a certain sort of business sense. Never mind, for a moment, that it's the kind that generally turns the stomach of music snobs, because the girls appointed to the task--Aly & AJ (full names: Alyson and Amanda Joy Michalka)--display genuine vocal talent. Aly, the star of the Disney Channel's Phil of the Future and AJ, a sometime presence on shows such as Six Feet Under and General Hospital, already lit up the soundtrack to Now You See It (a Disney Channel Movie) with their rendition of the '60s chestnut "Do You Believe in Magic," and Into the Rush arrives as solid reinforcement. Leadoff track "Rush" pelts listeners with a feel-good, sweet-sounding salvo on keeping it real, "Speak for Myself" aims itself insouciantly at stifling parents, and "I Am One of Them" takes down the self-importance factor a notch by addressing the issue of missing children. That all these songs save the last two ("Do You Believe In Magic" and another can't-miss '60s fave, "Walking On Sunshine") were written by Aly & AJ bodes well for them--Hilary Duff started writing and singing at Hollywood Records, too. --Tammy La Gorce

Product Description
The energy and spirit the sisters Aly & AJ's bring to their music colors the entire album Into The Rush. Aly and AJ worked with a variety of producers on Into The Rush including some of the music industry's biggest. "We've learned a lot from all of them," says Aly of the producers. "Some things we like...some things we don't like. It's all a part of the process. It's important that we have our own voice and that our emotions are a part of all of our music. This is why we're working with different producers, so that we can experience different ideas."

Their first single may have been the classic cover "Do You Believe In Magic," but the sisters have written all of the songs on this. And though they may be young teens, when it comes to writing songs, they aim high. "We want our songs to be fun, but we also want to write about deeper issues that make people think and issues that we can all relate to in one way or another," says AJ.

Aly and AJ's song "I Am One of Them" tackles the tough subject of child kidnappings. They want to bring awareness by encouraging kids to look out for one another and use precautions and safety measures to empower them. AJ contributed a track called "Protecting Me," a song featured in a "Phil of the Future" episode, which addresses the vulnerable nature of being a kid today. Says Aly: "We want to let kids know they have the power to protect themselves and one another." Aly and AJ have also written songs that address the issues of relationships, heartaches, staying true to yourself and celebrating your own uniqueness.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!.......2007-07-10

I absolutly LOVE this cd!!!!!!!! I listen to it all of the time! Here is how i would rate the songs:

Rush= 9/10, i really like the tune and the words are pretty good.

No One= 10/10, i love this song because it's about being yourself and not caring if others like the real you.

Collapsed= 9/10, i really like the song and i really like the part where they are almost talking, but i usually have to look at the words on that part so i know what they are saying.

Something More= 8/10, i like this song, but it's not my favorite song on the cd.

On the Ride= 10/10, this song is mostly about sisters and i really like it.

Speak For Myself= 9/10, i like this song and it shows how you should speak up and not be afraid to show people what your all about.

Out of The Blue= 9/10, i like this song and it is about when someone doesn't aprove of a boyfriend or a friend.

In a Second= 8/10, this song is good, but once again, not the best on the cd.

I Am One of Them= 10/10, if there was such thing as 1 million out of 10, that's what i would rate this song! i absolutly LOVE it! it is about awarness of kids getting kidnapped, which means it's kinda sad, but the tune and lyrics are great and i almost cry when i listen to it sometimes.

Sticks and Stones= 9/10, the song is about bullying and how you shouldn't let their taunting get to you.

Protecting Me= 9/10, this song is about the people in life that stand by you and help you through anything and everything.

Slow Down= 9/10, i can't quite think of how this one goes, but i know i liked it and it is about not just jumping into things, taking them slow.

Do You Believe in Magic= 7/10, this song gets a little annoying after a while, but it has good lyrics.

Walking on Sunshine= 9/10, i like this song and it has a happy beat to it that makes it uplifting and fun.

I would have to say that i love the overall messages of the songs and i would recomend this cd to anyone. i like to listen to it anytime; when i'm sad, mad, or even happy. This cd is very deserving of all five stars i gave it.

5 out of 5 stars I think it's outstanding.......2007-05-02

Ok, I know that Aly & AJ had some help in the studio with producers and songwriters and so forth. I also know that 80's hair metal is my number one pleasure, however, I have a diverse enough taste to try something new. For example, I like Juliana Hatfield's "Become What You Are" just as much as any Kix or Black N' Blue album. I also enjoy The Veronicas as much as Betty Blowtorch. The Aly & AJ cd has great melodies as far as I'm concerned and it really sounds as though they are believing in what they are singing about. I hear a lot of integrity here and this has become one of my favorite cds.

5 out of 5 stars OMG! Breathtaking album.......2007-04-02

wow. for two teenage sisters who just made it into show biz, these girls are pretty talented. I brought this CD for my daughter in January, and they loved it...and guess what? I did too! All of the songs are age-appropriate for children, adults, and teens alike, and they compare to real life situations. If you are someone who loves these types of songs, get this CD! You will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars aly and aj rule!!!.......2007-02-13

Adore it! Aly\Aj aren't like Spears; they sing for their worries, like kids getting killed, and being bullied. favorites are collaspsed, rush, i am one of them, and speak for myself. They are a nice duet. Buy this cd and hurry. Love ya, girls!

5 out of 5 stars Aly & AJ: Into the Rush.......2007-01-27

I heard lots of Aly & AJ on Disney Channel, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to buy their album. When I got it, I thought they were just going to be like any other pop/rock band. But, they were very talented!

There is a newer version out, INTO THE RUSH: DELUXE EDITION, that has more songs than on the original INTO THE RUSH. I don't have it, but it looks cool.

"Rush" is the first song on the album. It's about following your dreams, no matter what anyone else thinks. This song was also in the movie TWITCHES. The next song,"No One", was used in the movie ICE PRINCESS. The lyrics are so powerful in this balled and the message is about being yourself. After those two songs is a romance song. "Collapsed" is about a girl that misses her boyfriend, but knows she can't get hime back. It's kind of sad in a way. But, on the next song, "Something More" is where the girls' talent is really discoverd. AJ dedicated this beautiful track to her boyfriend. I always find myself singing along to it. "On the Ride" comes next. To me, it sound like the two sisters' anthem. You can tell by this song that the sisters have a strong relationship. Next comes "Speak for Myself". Parents should hear this song. It really shows what kids are made of. Then comes "Out of the Blue". This is sort of like "Collapse", except the two characters are told not to be together. The girls sound sound so good in it. Next is "In a Second". This is where the girls' talent really shines. The vocals and piano are breathtaking. "In a Second", to me, is the best song on this album. "I am One of Them" is frightening. It talks about (or rather sings about) the kids that are kidnapped and how the girls want to bring them back safely. "Sticks and Stones" comes next. I think all kids with bullies at school should hear this. The beginning part of the chorus goes like this "Sticks and Stones won't break my soul, Get out of the way I'm invincible", I think that can really make kids feel stronger. The next song is "Protecting Me". Aly & AJ dedicated this to their parents. Kids may know that Aly sang it in the TV seris PHIL OF THE FUTURE, but it sounds better when the two girls sing it together. "Slow Down" is really up-beat and fun. The song goes like this "Slow down, I'm not goin' anywhere, Slow down, If you care, I need a little time for air, if you just let me breath, Mabye I'll stick around, If you slow down." The last two songs are oldies, two darn good oldies that is. Aly & AJ sing "Do You Believe in Magic?" and "Walking on Sunshine". Aly & AJ sound like they were meant to sing these songs. Their version of "Walking on Sunshine" is the best version!

The two girls do some acting, too. You can see Aly in PHIL OF THE FUTURE and, I think, AJ as a supporting role in SIX FEET UNDER.

These girls have lots of talent. If you don't have INTO THE RUSH you've got to get it!

5 out of 5 stars A FUN BALLET WITH QUITE A HISTORY!.......2000-01-30

It can be said that La Sylphide (Sylfiden as the Danes call it, was premiered by the Royal Danish Ballet in 1836), composed by Herman Severin Lovenskiold and choreographed by Bournonville, is the earliest piece of ballet music from the Romantic period that has been recorded. However, an ealier version of the same ballet by a different composer (Schneitzhoeffer)--no recordings--and choreographer has been revived by the Paris Ballet (Who knows how faithful it is to the original!). La Sylphide is a story about a female spirit, called the Sylphide, who falls in love with a young man; he too falls in love with her. But the little courtship is to be cut short by a witch. The fairy tale ends with the death of the Sylphide. The star ballerina of the first version of La Sylphide was Marie Taglioni, who was forever associated with the beginning of the Romantic ballet. Now we come to the version recorded on this CD. First, a little history. After the Danish choreographer, August Bournonville, saw Marie Taglioni dance in the role of the Sylphide at the Paris Opera, he wanted to stage his own production of the ballet. But first, he had to purchase the rights for using the score (by Schneitzhoeffer), but to his disappointment, it was too expensive. Consequently, he decided to have entirely new music written. And the man to accomplish this was Lovenskiold. So successful was this second version that the complete Bournonville choreography along with Lovenskiold's score are still used today by the Royal Danish Ballet. This is a superb "complete" performance by the Danish Radio Sinfoniette. The sound is clear and rich! Damgaard who has been the chief conductor at the Royal Danish Theatre since 1990 conducts beautifully. Under his baton, the orchestra makes the music sound alive and poignant. For those who are interested in ballets or just a great fairy tale, I highly recommend they get this CD. The only alternative recording is the one on Chandos, performed by the Royal Danish Orchestra (conducted by Garforth). It is also excellently performed (Read my review for that recording!). That CD contains an extra number (a pas de deux, which is not ever played as part of the complete ballet), which is a delight to hear! The CPO version, however, contains James' Act 1 solo, which is not in the Chandos recording. If you're a completist, get both!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording of Lovenskiold 's Ballet.......1999-10-26

It is a beatiful recording of the first romantic ballet, who has a precursor on Taglioni's Sylphide (which can be appreciate on video recording by Ghislene Thesmar interpretation with the corps of Opera Paris Ballet, music by Scheneihoffer, available at amazon.com). The perfomance of Lovenskiold partiture by the Danish Radio Simfonieta conducted by Daamgaardt is perfect, without affectation and it reach the maximum climax on second act. I bought this record because I listen on the radio the overture and the introduction of the first act, which inmediately decided me to find out and bought this version. There is only a criticism to the booknote which is included on the CD. Taglioni 's Sylphide has been succesfull performed in our century, on the seventies by a reconstruction taken on by Pierre Lacotte and interpreted by Ghislaine Thesmar. Teatro Colon of Buenos Aires offer this version on 1974 on stage and it was suscefull received at Argentine and many great Argentine Ballerinas interpreted the beautiful role of the light Sylphide.

Album Description

Outlander's self titled release is a powerful progressive/hard rock masterpiece combining the skill and complexity of bands like Rush and Yes with the raw power of bands like Soundgarden and Black Sabbath. The songs are catchy but moving and original, and never cliche. Lyrically the songs are poetic, sometimes profound, but always leave the listener thinking. The depth of the songs in terms of emotion, orchestration, message, and raw energy will leave all listeners, whether connoisseurs or just music lover, coming back for more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well...hello, Outlander!.......2006-06-10

I don't say this lightly; this self-titled effort is one of the best rock albums of the decade! As Neil Peart might say ... what a diamond in the waste! I'll let the other reviewers tell you who these guys sound like. Take the best of those artists, stir them up with some syncopation, and you get Outlander! Best $12 I've spent on an album in a **long** time.

Hurry up, guys, and give us a new album or two!

5 out of 5 stars They love RUSH.......2006-04-18

This band is incredible. These guys did it all themseleves and deserve all the praise. If you like rock, like RUSH from back in the day, BUY this album. DO it. It's not cover tunes and it's not a RUSH rip off band. Their sound is heavily influenced by them and thats a good thing. [...]

5 out of 5 stars Far beyond amazing.......2004-11-26

I don't know how to give this band the credit they deserve, but I will say this: if my life were a movie and I had to put a soundtrack to it, this band would have the opening theme. They're that good. Enough can't be said about the overall appeal of this album. As a fan of classic rock and real music (non-packaged 4 chord garbage) I am telling you, buy this album. Seriously. OK so maybe my review is a little overblown, but go get the cd anyways, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Just buy it........2004-06-26

If you like Rush, if you like Tool, if you like hard rock, classic rock, or anything in between- If you like music that is complex, true musicianship, EXCELLENT performance, excellent sound quality. This band is fantastic, the music is ageless.

5 out of 5 stars Not the typical cookie cutter rock band.......2002-03-22

As the older I get the more apparent on how much cookie cutter rock band are out there. Who cares if they know how to play their own instruments? Gone are the days when artist had original ideas about music and lyrics.

So I thought, this CD is one of the best CD's released within the past 5 years. The songs contain visual lyrics, catchy tempo changes, very different, and tight.

Buy the CD and Spread the word about this new band.

          REVIEW FROM MARK HENSCH WWW.ANTIMUSIC.COM

After reviewing the Luv Machine's Blizzard in Chicago in an earlier review for this column, I was expecting Big Maracas (released in June of this year, or 2005 for those of you who have been living under a gigantic rock) to be more of the same. Now, I truly do not mean any insult by that, and if you don't believe me, I'll prove it. Think of it like this; why would a retro blues rock band, who have mastered one of the more technical schools of rock and built a decent career out of it, with several releases and years of playing shows together, and all sorts of accolades usually befitting a much larger band, need to change anything at all? It's the whole principle of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," and really, there wasn't much broke on Blizzard if anything at all. I guess that's why Big Maracas surprised me so much; tiny traces of Latin have been added to the mix along with oodles of lush, psychedelic vibes. In fact, the band has (and this is apparent to me after only about four songs or so) added so much extra depth to their mellow rock that it almost sounds like a different band. The songs have taken on a deeper complexity, often sounding a little bit more rocking or smoking than the predecessors of Blizzard. To add even more change, keyboards seem to pop up a lot on this CD, allowing for more variety in the sonics department. It all makes for a swell time, as well as a CD that excludes new levels of jamming cool.

The title track isn't wasted for a second, and as such, "Big Maracas" kicks things off right away. The song sways in on a cool Caribbean breeze of textured, clean, electric guitars, and clangy drums. The song slowly builds into a rocking climax, and I can say that this song already eclipses some of the best material on Blizzard. "Goin' for Tha Rush" has a spacey, tripped out vibe that almost harkens to Pink Floyd rather vaguely at times. An odd song out of left-field, and a great swerve from the band as well. "Show Me Tha Money" has a killer keyboard tone backing a jamming bass line and some good old fashioned funk. "Into the Mist" is a meandering folk ballad that is one of the album's best highlights; I can already picture three or four movies playing this song at that pivotal "protagonist driving a cool car into the sunset" scene. The groove heaven that is "James Brown" is so freaking retro, yet fresh at the same time, you could party to it for a generation or two. "Ain't Stopping My Train" is a fantastic ballad of rustic guitar picking, and the polar opposite that is "Don't Get Hustled" follows it up with blistering guitar licks and random insanity. I'd probably pick "Hustled" is the best track here, so fun is it to listen to the awesome guitar pieces. "The Emasculator" is a quiet ballad about witchy women, and the gospel-themed keyboards of "Where Did The Time Go?" mesh perfectly with the blazing Southern guitar splendor. "Go to Mississippi" is a throwback worthy of Blizzard meanwhile; the tune has a swampy boogie to it the band explored on a few of its earlier tracks. I can say without a doubt that final track "This is What You Get" is the heaviest Luv Machine track I've heard, the band entering stoner rock bliss with a low groove and flat out rock 'n roll.

Wow...Big Maracas heralds big change. The amount of new directions present here is staggering, and it seems the Luv Machine has been upgraded many times over. Cool, confident, collected, and even a tad eclectic, Big Maracas is like that big Pinata at your 8th birthday party; no matter which angle you decided to whack it at, some kind of candy everyone likes is bound to spill out. The adage holds true here; give this puppy a whirl and most likely a song or two will please any fan of music. In closing, if you're looking for something fun try shaking these Maracas next. I'm willing to bet good money no one who does will feel hustled in the slightest.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful orchestration and the Genius of Charlie Chaplin.......2000-01-22

A sort of "Greatest Hits" from some of Chaplin's most famous films -- and that's saying something. For those who only know Chaplin as a brilliant actor and director, it may come as a surprise that he was also one heck of a tunesmith (his most famous being the lovely and hummable tune "Smile" from his film MODERN TIMES.) And these new recordings -- using Chaplin's original scores -- preserve the charm of Chaplin's genius while still giving us clean, crisp sound.

This is more than just the incidental music that sometimes lurks around on scores. The "Garrent Waltz" and "Blue Eyes" from THE KID are fully-realized songs that set a definite mood. "Kidnap," also from THE KID, frames one of film's most memorable and heartwrenching scenes, when the Kid is taken from The Tramp -- and the music swoops and swells with all the same agony and heartache, climaxing with soft violins and flutes crying through a theme that eventually became one of Chaplin's signature tunes. Good stuff.

On a lighter note, the CD also contains the famous "Dance of the Rolls" from THE GOLDRUSH and "The Circus March" from THE CIRCUS, one of Chaplin's most laugh-out-loud films.

It is in his music for CITY LIGHTS and MODERN TIMES, though, where Chaplin the musician really shines. The drunken vignettes of the four "Nightclub" tracks make for great listening, but it's the "Boxing Ring" music that you'll end up cranking through the stereo speakers, with its blaring trumpets and up-and-down brass line (and in these new recordings, you can even hear the frantic timpani swooshing juuuuust behind it all).

The music of MODERN TIMES bring the album to an appropriate close, with the refrain from "Smile" fading out as the final fanfare swells -- fittingly enough, it was this music that played as The Tramp (with the girl finally on his arm) walked off into the sunset (or sunrise, in this case) in the final scene of what would be his last truly "silent" film.

As an import, it costs a little more. But if you're a Chaplin aficianado -- or even just a collector of film scores -- this belongs in your collection.
