In the Reins features Sam Beam of Iron & Wine and Calexico aiming to combine the best of each of their musical strengths, a collaboration that was discussed by both bands for years but never came together until now. The CD unfolds with Beam's evocative melodies backed by Calexico's blend of mariachi horns, soaring strident pedal steel, and jangly '60s-era reverb guitars; there's even the contribution of Salvador Duran's operatic Flamenco vocals on the first track, "He Lays in Reins," to really flesh out the Western feel. Given the EP's title, images of being tied or controlled come to mind especially on "Dead Man's Will," a track that features a nice peppering of vibraphones to round things out at the end. "Red Dust" is reminiscent of the roustabout feel on Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's recent collaboration with Matt Sweeny on Superwolf. Here is a song that begins quietly and opens into a ballsy, four-on-the-floor honky tonk. On "Burn That Broken Bed" muted trumpets linger in space and the blended band is cautious with dynamics like a seasoned jazz quartet. As a first EP together (though it seems unlikely their last), Calexico and Iron & Wine seem almost tentative. It would be interesting to see Beam nudge the sweet introverted songs he's mastered from the bedroom into Calexico's full-on cinematic marquee limelight--something there is great potential for with this exciting grouping.--Gabi Knight

4 out of 5 stars Iron & Wine and generic backing band.......2006-04-27

You won't find any calexico here. Sam Beam is in charge from stop to finish with calexico hardly ever creeping through beside the more standardised use of some of their instruments. If anything, calexico's influence is obvious only in the form of appearing to slightly take away from Sam Beam's expressive powers. Having said that it's hard to understand the motivation behind this project, that is until you listen to calexico's following album "garden ruin", which obviously modeled after Sam Beam's style is lacking his essence, making this album not a collaboration of two bands with a healthy appreciation for each other, but a highschooly attempt to get close to one's idol and become alike, with calexico playing the infatuated geeky girl that has to learn to appreciate her self.

Sam Beam is however, as always, excellent, even with calexico's clumsy schoolgirl meddling getting in the way.

5 out of 5 stars Beloveds Gestalt.......2006-04-05

It is just special when two of your beloveds come together. I can't explain it but I really loved these folks powerfully and in parallel for a long time, having no idea of a connection. And so a crossover like this is just so well-met 'round here. I love crossovers!

I focus most on Beam but that might be for personal reasons or because for some psych/social reason I am focusing on the singer more than the instrumentation. I wouldn't base my relationship with either band on this album ... I mean, I wouldn't base my relationship with them individually on this album. And that's fine, that's perfect. This becomes something else. Something equally special, redolent without being representative. A fresh gestalt. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful - A Perfect Blend.......2006-02-05

This album is absolutely beautiful. The full musical sound and talent of Calexico together with the soothing warm vocals of Iron & Wine make the perfect match.

It's almost unheard of that I love EVERY song on an album, but this one makes the cut. Each song wraps you in a warm trance, a coccoon of well-being. It has a really positive emotional effect on me. It creates an ambiance of gentle strength.

Wonderful. I really hope to see a these two bands getting together for more albums.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album of 2005.......2006-01-31

This EP is a very solid outing for both bands. Sam Beam is one of the best songwriters alive, and I always thought he would sound better with strong instrumentation behind him. Calexico makes for a perfect backing band. They are obviously adept at utilizing the right stuff at all the right times- the pedal steel, the accordion, operatic (Mexican, maybe?) vocalists, and not to mention a badass horn section. Although completely different stylistically, these guys (hope Sam stays with them!) and the Avett Brothers from NC are the two best bands alive right now- studio AND live.

5 out of 5 stars Hair Metal At Its Finest.......2006-01-12

If you have anything to do w/ the 80s, early 90s hair metal scene, this is a must own. A highly overrated band. Mike M. can hit notes no one even comes close to. Take the song "Steelheart"...it doesn't get any better than this. Screaming like a maniac. If this song doesn't get you going, give it up. A great cd for any collection of the genre.

4 out of 5 stars Steelhearts 2nd album...Honestly not as good as the 1st.......2005-02-04

Because I love this band so much, I'm doing a review for all 3 of their albums (this is the second one, see Steelheart and/or Wait for my other two reviews.)

Album Name: Tangled In Reins
Running Time: 53:34
Band Members: Mike Matijevic- Lead Vocals and Piano
Chris Risola- Lead Guitar
Frank DiCostanzo- Rhythm Guitar and Talk Box
John Fowler- Drums and Percussion
James Ward- Bass

Now don't be mislead by the title of my review. This album is good but its just not as good as the 1st album was. It was the last CD that the orginal Steelheart recorded and i'm glad they did more then 1 album. I only wish it was the pure magic that was the 1st album.

1. Loaded Mutha -5:42- A decent opening track but doesn't seem fast enough for me. The lyrics and the talk box are pretty cool though. 3/5

2. Sticky Side Up -4:32- Probably my favorite track on the CD. Awesome awesome song. The solo along with Mike's screams is capable of destroying buildings. 5/5!!

3. Electric Love Child -6:26- a decent track over all...its pretty good although slightly annoying..The high point is during the solo listening to Mike screaming along with it 3/5

4. Late For The Party -4:17- Cheesy cheesy song. Not bad though the talk box is pretty awesome. 2.5/5

5. All Your Love -6:53- Some people compare this one to "Angel Eyes" but it doesn't do the same for me. But the lyrics are good and its worth a listen 3.5/5

6. Love'em And I'm Gone -5:38- Nice sleazy sex song. Cool bass line and catchy ass lyrics this is one of the better tracks 4/5

7. Take Me Back Home -4:43- Nice catchy tune that I personally like. 4/5

8. Steelheart -5:44- Ahh the self-titled track that KICKS ASS!!!! God this song is so good its like an orgy of solos and screams. Mike hits his highest (YES his highest) high note ever!! 5/5!!

9. Mama Don't You Cry -5:49- Although this song is very cheesy (piano and children singing) I do like this song alot. The piano although cheesy does sound good and the guitar is very nice. 5/5
10. Dancin' In The Fire -3:49- Cool catchy track. nuff said. 4/5

So yeah although its not as good as the 1st the 2nd album is still a good listen. I dunno if its worth 50$ (current price) but if your a die hard Steelheart fan (like me) its worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Metal For Anybody With An Ear For Anything.......2004-03-15

This album si absolutely amazing. Sans the slight cheezeeness of the piano and the children in "Mama, Don't You Cry," this is one of the few metal albums that can be played from start to finish w/o dissapointment. "Loaded Mutha" starts you out high and keeps you going when you hit "Sticky Side Up," which makes you laugh at Matijevic's sheer cockiness that is so archtypal for metal. "All Your Love" is a ballad comparable to "I'll Never Let You Go." Even though all the high notes aren't there, the harmonies are blended wonderfully. And dude, if you wanna kick (rear) song that just freakin' rocks, the song "Steelheart" (#8) is just awesome, it's fast, hard-hitting, and he totally rocks a G-sharp for like a year. It's awesome. Get this album, you won't be dissapointed. ... Mike Matijevic, you're a god!

5 out of 5 stars Steelheart Strikes Again!.......2004-02-09

This cd is most definatly just as good as there first album! The selection of songs on this cd are great i love them all! Not much more to say bout this cd execpt go get it! You'll most definatly get your moneys worth!
